Value Investing Question about Berkshire's book value, float, and holdings

Question about Berkshire's book value, float, and holdings

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 04:31 PM PST

The recent annual filing indicates that BRK has ~$115 billion in insurance float, AND:

"Our aggregate investments in U.S. Treasury Bills at December 31, 2017 were $90.1 billion, which consisted of $5.7 billion included in cash and cash equivalents and $84.4 billion included in short-term investments in U.S. Treasury Bills in our Consolidated Balance Sheet." p. K-67 paragraph (c)

    1) Does this quotation regarding the balance sheet refer only to the holdings of retained earnings, i.e., actual book value cash, or is this part of the float?

    2) If it only refers to the actual retained earnings, is BRK actually able hold closer to $200 billion in treasury bills at the present time, if the float is also parked in short term bills? Is it ever disclosed what precisely the float is held in?

    3) And finally, I know that the float is deducted as a liability, but is it actually recorded as a net negative $-115 billion from the book value, or is it simultaneously balanced as a positive asset?

    Much appreciated

    How useful is a 13-F?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:37 PM PST

    Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could provide insight into how you use 13-Fs from well known shops in your research. I have also heard they can be misleading at times and was wondering why.

In general, I tend to use 13-Fs as a method of sourcing/validating ideas before diving deeper (especially if there are multiple successful value funds loading up on a single business, and the share price hasn't appreciated yet). It would be great to hear your thoughts on their value!

Help me understand terminology in Security Analysis

    Posted: 26 Feb 2018 03:18 AM PST

I've been skimming through "Security Analysis" by Ben Graham and David Dodd and I don't really understand his terminology when referring to bonds, and can't seem to find a resource anywhere explaining it.

For example, what does it mean when the book says "The Fisk Rubber Company sold $10,000,000 of five year 5 1/2s. Bonus points it someone can also help me wrap my head around YTM
