    Just curious.

I bought some $V on Friday right as it was sinking for ~$122/each.

Debating whether to grab some more at ~$118 or some $MSFT for sub ~$90.

Or even diversify a bit and pick up a new stock, which is the reason for this thread. Just to get a feel of what people are looking at.

    GE

Any engineers or software guys that can comment on the value of GE Predix or their additives manufacturing? To a non engineer this stuff seems impressive and looks like it could have a long runway for the company.

[My Take] Rising interest rates, bonds, treasury notes, and its effect on equities

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 09:48 AM PST

Going through the DOW, and basing it off Finviz numbers, most all companies are trading between a forward P/E ratio of 20 and 25. 1 year, 5 year, and 30 year treasury notes are now yielding 1.88%, 2.58%, and 3.08% respectively. The Federal Reserve has set the precedent to raise interest rates 0.25% every quarter, with the last hike on December 13, whose interest rates rose to a benchmark range of 1.25% and 1.50%.

A bond that yields 4% is equivalent to stock with a P/E ratio of 25.

A bond that yields 3% is equivalent to a stock with a P/E ratio of 33.3.

A bond that yields 2% is equivalent to a stock with a P/E ratio of 50.

Equities will ALWAYS trade below the yields of bonds or treasury notes because they are essentially risk free. If the yields are close to the forward expectations of companies, who wouldn't want the risk free alternative? Until yields equal about 3.5% though, which is equivalent to a P/E ratio of 28.5, I would not expect this bull market to end. 30 year treasury notes are getting close, but who in the world is wanting to buy a 30 year bond when we're living in this insane bull market??? Yet based on the forward P/E ratios of the DOW, and the rising expectations of interest rates, we really need to watch these treasury yields much more closely

Amazon - A few other thoughts about future revenue streams and growth

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 07:34 AM PST

I know Amazon is has a ridiculously high p/e ratio and while they do dominate in several industries, many people worry that they won't be able to keep the growth in future years.

We know in the recent earnings report, Bezos was extremely pleased with the sales of the echo and how customers were using them. He said that they were very optimistic about the growth and the growth exceeded that optimism.

I recently purchased and echo and I believe we are just starting to scratch the service in this industry which will become huge. I also believe that Amazon has a sizeable headstart on Apple (which is just releasing its homepod) and is staying ahead of google by just the # of sold units.

Where I see huge growth is in the field of video/music subscription, home automation, advertising, and revenue from a cut of skills apps (similar to how the app store is run).

I am long on AMZN, I still believe their are huge untapped revenue streams that they are in a key position to claim.

    Quick question regarding $TVIX

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 07:23 AM PST

In 2011 $TVIX reached a price of $22'000. Today it is at $7.50. Let's say the market would crash, could $TVIX reach $22'000 again? Because „risking" $7.50 to potentially make $22'000 sounds like a no-brainer to me.

    Inverse ETF's

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 12:45 PM PST

If the market continues to trend down in the near term, and it looks like it will, would it be a good idea to put your money in an inverse ETF (like SPXS)? Seems like a good way to make some money from the volatility.

What to do with potentially useless stocks (CityView)?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 12:20 PM PST

Was organizing my paperwork and I found 1000 shares of what I believe is probably a defunct company now. The name is CityView Energy Corporation Limited or CityView Corporation Limited out of Western Australia. I tried Googling it, but I have no idea what I am looking at beyond my guess that it doesn't exist anymore.

Can anyone confirm if it is defunct, and if so, what do I do with the paperwork - shredder, fire kindling, toilet paper, etc.?

    $MTN (Vail) Thoughts?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 10:44 AM PST

MTN has a great dividend that they've been increasing for a few years now and they seem to be doing really well with growing the company through acquisitions and increased season pass ticket sales. Plus they've been improving earnings during non-peak seasons.

However, it appears there have been some concerns with warmer weather. Is this a long term concern or do you think this is just a blip that comes and goes through the years?

Do you or anyone you know make a living trading stocks?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:07 PM PST

I always hear people stating that you can make a living off the stock market. But I've never read or seen a story of anyone who is actually doing that today.

I'm talking about an indivual who just invests on their own time, making a living doing it.

I know it's possible, I just want to hear your story .

    Trupanion TRUP: Pet Insurance

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 08:48 PM PST

Pets are being treated like family members; this trend's led to bull rushes in IDEXX and PETS.

I'm looking into Trupanion but info is scarce. The year-to-year revenue increases look solid and pet owners have a good impression of the company. Any additional thoughts or insights would be welcome.

How do you know if a stock/bond is overvalued/undervalued?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 02:17 PM PST

    Hey,

I am a new investor and was wondering how one person determines whether a stock is overvalued and undervalued. Does anyone have any resources that explain it?

    Any help is appreciated.
