Stock market continues plunge, loses 300 points

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 10:23 AM PST

    • The bad start Monday extended the 666-point drop that happened Friday, a drop of about 2.5 percent. It was its worst finish since June 2016, when British voters chose to leave the European Union.
    • The drop on Friday was the sixth-largest point drop in history.
    • The Dow is still up more than 30 percent since the 2016 presidential election

Could be the start of a bear market. My retirement account trailing stops actually triggered (phew). We should all be watching the market closely.

Trump's crackdown on AT&T-Time Warner is infuriating big media — to the benefit of Amazon, Netflix and others

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 09:43 AM PST

main point (read or highlight) :

    • One of the main reasons Rupert Murdoch decided to sell Fox was his fear that large technology companies would outspend Fox on sports rights and other valuable content.

    • Unclear regulatory rules have thrown media companies into a state of confusion about their futures.

    • If AT&T is allowed to buy Time Warner, Comcast may try to top Disney's bid for Fox, according to people familiar with the matter.

How much of a role did algorithmic high frequency trading (bots) factor in today’s developments?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 06:38 PM PST

I know most people are rightly saying this was an overdue correction of the market. However, as mentioned on PBS Newshour tonight, many sell offs are apparently triggered by artificially intelligent processes - namely algorithmic high frequency trading. I learned a bit about it here. Is this system well controlled by human handlers? Could this technology pose systemic risk to the economy due to poorly understood emergent properties of the algorithms involved? Sorry if this question appears painfully naive to experts, just wondering because of what PBS reported. Can't seem to find any recent discussions about this subject.

    Correction or Volatility?

I hear many people say that the drop is just a correction in the market. Is there room for an argument that instead the market is becoming more volatile?

Cloverfield Paradox and the future of NFLX

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 07:46 AM PST

First thing first, I am a pretty big Cloverfield fan and ever since 10 Cloverfield Lane, I've been following the ARG aspect of the franchise, the smaller marketing campaign that fans and audiences engage in to unravel the lore of the franchise.

Given how major of an acquisition Netflix got with Cloverfield Paradox, and how they dropped the trailer almost out of nowhere during the Super Bowl, it is definitely amazing observing the innovative aspect of how major productions like this is utilizing Netflix and guerrilla marketing campaigns to get the audience all in, and it is really effective.

That being said, any opinions on how an unorthodox franchise like Cloverfield could influence things in the long run? As for me, I'm gonna try watch it real soon.

With Mute and Altered Carbon, Netflix is really stepping up on their sci-fis.

As a total newb to stocks, who has been playing with Acorns for fun... what should I do here?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 01:34 PM PST

    First, please no trolling...

I started "investing" (ik... acorns is probably a shitty way to do it) about two months ago, and acorns picks the stocks for me. Idk if its picking well, but it follows the trends..

Anywho, my previous idea was "Hey, as long as I'm making money, I'll stick around" but currently to -$20 from the $50 I was a week ago with about $1000 in the fund.

I feel like I've got a couple options, but have no real knowledge of the market or when to make moves.. so

    1. Cancel my roundups, but let it ride.. just see what happens, maybe pull out if I get to like -$50 or something..

    2. Pull out... decide I don't wanna run with the big dogs and dip...

    3. Drop another $1000 in while everything is super low. Big dog, big nuts. How should I do this to minimize loss though? Wait until the first turn up, then buy?

Whats the formula for determining a stocks price?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 04:58 PM PST

Hey everyone, I was wanting to beat the market by a factor of 2 and all I need to know is the formula to decide the market price of a stock. I need to know all the factors and also who takes these prices and then declares them the actual selling price (or is it all left up to a spreadsheet)? Anyways, thanks everybody. Also, im going to donate all of my profits (over a million so far) from the stock market to charity because i do it just for fun and other people need the money more than myself and i have everything i need. So what are good charities to donate to?

Is Home Depot on your shopping list?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 03:42 PM PST

On a day like today, when the market fell 5% (about time!), I thought it would be wise to get a shopping list ready. After stumbling upon this page I saw the State of Capital Checklist and fished around.

They put out a Home Depot Checklist and I thought that stock would be more stable. It fell like a rock today, but I want everyone else's opinions on it as I think millennials will start buying houses once there are more on the market.

I personally like the business over Lowe's from a customer perspective, but it seems to have some serious drawbacks.

Anyways it got over 5% cheaper today so I thought I'd ask for some help.

Anyone else got anything juicy on their list?
