Run off the road, no contact. Have video, do I make a claim?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 05:45 PM PST

This afternoon in Maryland, I was run off the road (see https://i.imgur.com/r2L58Lr.gifv). The car cutting across traffic is pretty clearly at fault, but they didn't stop. I immediately called the police. The responding officer only saw the video on my dashcam, so we weren't able to make out the tags at that moment. With that info, he said the other driver isn't technically criminally responsible, but I should give the video to my insurance company (Allstate). Now that I've been able to see it on my computer, I can make out the other driver's plates. My right rear tire is blown out, my right front tire is dangerously damaged (big chunk missing), and both hubcaps are scraped up. I'm looking at a minimum of $1000 to replace the tires, possibly more if my suspension or wheels were damaged. My deductible is $1000.

Those should be all the relevant facts, now here are my questions (in order of what I think is most important):

    • Given no contact was made, should I put in a claim with Allstate?

    • Is it worth the risk that the other driver might be uninsured, or that Allstate might place some fault on me and raise my rates?

    • Should I run to a Mr. Tire or something tomorrow to get a quote before deciding?

    • Should I call the police with the other driver's plates to see if that changes anything? They'd at least add that info to the report, right?

Edit: While I was searching, I found these other cases that seemed similar but didn't quite answer my questions.

    Direct replacement or payout?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 11:04 PM PST

We live in Washington state and have Safeco auto and renters insurance. My brother was using my husband's car ('94 Accord) when it was stolen with a bunch of electronics in it. The car was recovered 6 days later, but all of our stuff was gone. We don't usually leave things in there, but my brother had just finished filming a video that he had borrowed some of my equipment for.

My question is two fold; with a $500 deductible, would it make more sense to let them replace everything with new items, or take the settlement and re-purchase what we want? Also, will they deduct the $500, and replace what they can with the remainder of what they have deemed our items to be worth?

Should I make an insurance claim on a small windshield crack?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 08:15 PM PST

Okay, so I am a shift worker and I currently work nights(soon going back to mornings =]). I was driving home Friday morning after it snowed like 1-2 inches. There is the road where there is only 2 lanes, and the salt trucks were going really slow pouring out salt on the right lane.

Basically, the salt made a small crack on my windshield. I thought it was just a scratch, so I didn't pay it any attention. Now it appears that it got a little bit bigger, and I am kind of annoyed. I made a post on a car subreddit, and people told me that I should replace the entire windshield over a small crack...

The crack still is really insignificant and small, it obviously doesn't effect my vision. However, I am not sure if this will pass my annual inspection and I am not sure if I can mitigate this issue.

I'd like to ask the insurance to pay for it(since that's what they're supposed to do!). My parents are immigrants, and they're completely irrational when it comes to certain things. They never make an insurance claim because they believe that it'll raise the insurance rates 10 fold. They never use their credit cards online because they think their identity will be stolen. I definitely don't want to pay $300-$600 for a new windshield over a small crack.

Current situation - want to get real opinions. I just want fairness with the building insurance and my apartment that got denied replacement(so far)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 12:57 AM PST

Live in a co-op on east coast. Management runs the building are pretty shitty on everything. Old building - lots of leaks n problems - etc. No renters insurance. Building has there insurance. Steam leak from within the floor started in my kitchen and leaked for 2 days and destroyed lots of places with moisture. Ceiling actually collapsed. They came and demolished numerous walls and all the ceilings with moisture. Now they're telling me there unsure they going to replace all the ceilings n walls. Also the floors are all damaged. They're telling me since it's not original - they can't be replaced. I never touched the floors since ownership - only in the kitchen - where they actually ripped the floor out. They're dragging there feet and pretty seems like not doing anything. I've retained a lawyer. I assume My building got the shittiest insurance possible knowing what scumbags they are. Any ideas of my options?

Minor car accident and in need of advice/suggestions

    Posted: 04 Feb 2018 12:36 AM PST

I was in a minor accident and I'm not really sure who is at fault. I was stopped in a lane when there was a red light and needed to change to the lane left of me to make a left so I looked in the side mirror to check if it was clear and it was so I signaled and slowly started to turn my car to the left while continuing to look in the mirror. I suddenly see a car coming really fast so I stop immediately and they end up sort of sliding against the front right of my car. It turns out that on my car there wasn't any real dents and it just looked like scratches and it really didn't look like there was a dent or anything on her car. We got out and talked and she kept insisting it was my fault even though I feel as if she wasn't paying attention because she did not stop or hesitate at all when she should have seen my signal or at least see my car slowly start going into the other lane. She kept saying that I shouldn't have been trying to switch lanes last second. Anyways, I did tnot have my insurance with me because it is a new car (I don't even have a license plate for it yet) so we didn't exchange insurance but we got each other's phone numbers and she took a picture of my drivers license. We went our separate ways and now I'm not sure what to do. She is asking for my insurance info and is saying that she will take her car to a shop to get an estimate to see if I want to pay out of pocket or if I want to go through insurance. I haven't replied yet but I feel as if it is not completely my fault and I shouldn't have to pay for the damages to her car. Any advice on what I should do?

Help!! Just got a bunch of mail with claims totaling over $17,000 in bills

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 04:28 PM PST

Full disclosure, I'm on UHC Platinum Select Plus and have $0 deductible, $100 copay on emergency room visits, etc. There's also a bunch of charges for pharmacy medication. If you google "United Healthcare AKRV 403" you should come up with a comprehensive list of the coverage.

I have no idea why so many of the claims in my UHC portal are for hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for single visits, and why my insurance doesn't cover any of the specialists that my plan says it covers. Any information about how to talk to the health insurance company to get to the bottom of this would be super helpful. Happy to discuss details, just feeling so overwhelmed and stressed at this news.

Does a transgender girl get lower car insurance premiums or stay the same? (Under 25)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 09:06 PM PST

So to start off I am not a transgender girl I am just curious if someone was to tell their insurance company that they were a transgender girl and it even said on their ID they're technically a girl would that not be something along the lines of fraud? I am asking about this because couldn't they get lower car insurance rates because they're considered a female even though they were born a male.

    Car Insurance Questions (post accident)

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:20 PM PST

Pre car accident So my previous car insurance was expiring and believing I wasn't the type to get into accidents, I decided apply for the California Low Cost Program. I recieved a mail saying it was pending under All-State.

Post car accident Scared out of my mind, I totally forgot to get the other guys information. All I have are his make, model, license plate, and that he has insurance with Mercury. Got a police report too.

Tried calling All-State. Said info isn't on file, probably because application is still pending. My old insurance policy ran out last week.

So what do I do? Call my previous insurance company (Access)? Do I reinstate it and then file a claim? No idea what to do. My car needs some repairs too, but I need insurance money to cover it.

Car sometime used by grandchild that doesn't live at my address.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:20 PM PST

I'm the only licensed driver that lives at the address my vehicles are registered and insured at. Teenager wants to borrow my car. Does this impact my insurance in any way. Doesn't seem a question asked by my insurance provider.

2 people, 2 cars, would cross insuring cost more?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:15 PM PST

So basically, me and my girlfriend both have separate insurance for ourselves and our respective cars, but often swap cars, so if anything happened we would be screwed as far as insurance is concerned. My question is if we got one policy to cover both of us with both cars, would it (generally speaking) cost more than the sum of our current policies, or would it be about the same?

I feel obligated to say that it is a very serious relationship, we live together, all but have one bank account, I can safely say that as far as the relationship goes there's no issue with doing this.

    VERY low mileage insurance

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 12:14 PM PST

My wife and I own a 2015 Subaru Outback and 2017 Subaru STi. We recently found out we'll be moving to San Francisco and will only be needing one car (the Outback). My parents live close by, so I would like to find someone who does very low mileage insurance for the STi. Right now, we pay around $1900/year for full coverage. Any recommendations?

EDIT: MetroMile quoted $55 + $.091/mile. Any better suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Claim question

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 10:37 AM PST

I am working with the insurance company of the car that hit me from behind, go auto insurance, and they are stating my car was basically totaled before they hit me. The accident was a multi-car accident involving 5 cars. I was the 4th. Second from the last. The offer is $600. The Car is a 08' Hyundai elantra 100,000 miles. If i sold today i could maybe get like 3500-4000 in condition before accident. Accident was in Atlanta Georgia. I don't know what to say? Can I even challenge or do I just accept what they offer. I'm not looking to go to court for this and ready to just move on.

    Canceling home insurance?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:30 AM PST

To the homeowners in this subreddit:

    • First-time homebuyer, bought a house in West Philly, closed Nov 17th.
    • Received a letter 01/04/2018 that Allstate is canceling my insurance as of 02/14/18 for
    • Dry rot on the siding/frame exterior & windows
    • A basement window w/ a board that's not painted white
    • Chimney Pointing

Have you ever heard of a home insurance policy being canceled?

The work they're asking to get fixed is $5600. My agent never heard of this, my cousin with the same exact house layout 10 blocks away never heard of this...the list goes on.

    Advice?

A Dent that costs as much as the car.

    Posted: 03 Feb 2018 07:37 AM PST

I have two housemates. One ran into the others car and caused a small dent/crease and scuffing. The owner of the damaged car got a repair estimate of 700$. The car is a 95 civic hatchback probably worth 1-2.5k$. I offered that we fix it ourselves with a well thought out bondo job (it's a small 1/8in deep dent/crease) and rubbing compound. The owner refused saying "I want this to last, this car has lasted 22 years" . It has rust on it's roof...the owner is being stupid/stubborn imho.

I don't think the guy who ran into the car should allow a claim at that ridiculous cost to his insurance. What do you think?

    Annual income, residency and Medi-Cal

    Posted: 02 Feb 2018 09:15 PM PST

I signed up for Medi-cal in December 2016 when I was just graduated and unemployed. I didn't do any research before applying, and didn't read the packets / information they sent me when I got accepted. I was just excited to save my mom money by getting off her health care plan. I spent 2017 traveling and working random stints, a couple months at a ski resort in New Mexico, part of the summer caretaking / guiding in Alaska, and the last few weeks of the year at a restaurant in Utah. Now I'm realizing that my year's income is all from out of state (no taxed income in CA) and my income is slightly higher than the CA required level for Medi-cal. My total income according to taxes is $17,000 and the Medi-cal limit is $16,395. However, the income earned in AK was split with my partner, (the company paid me the caretaker money and him the guiding money, but we split both jobs and split the earnings) so my actual total income for the year is only $14,300.

Also! In October 2017, I got a notice that I needed to send proof of residency to keep coverage. I sent a couple pieces of mail and a rent receipt from my moms bf for a few hundred bucks for the month. I didn't get a response after that so I called my case worker to check in. She said not to worry about the residency and that if I sent it, it'll be filed before the new year. Then she told me that when I had applied (almost a whole year before this conversation) that I had $0 income, and she asked if this was still the case. I told her that I'd worked a few jobs during the year, and that I was currently working and making ~$200 a week. She told me not to worry, that it was still under the requirements, and to send a paystub to verify. I sent a paystub, and got a notice that I'm all set for insurance for 2018.

Do I need to worry about my coverage? Do I need to report anything about the tax year to Medi-cal? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
