We encourage all our visitors to ask those investing related questions they were always too afraid to ask.

The members of /r/investing are here to answer and educate!

NOTE If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

    PSA: Earnings

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:32 PM PST

It seems like every quarter, this sub has a number of posts about how stocks behave in a strange manner around earnings reports. It is unfortunately a lot more nuanced than just "XYZ Company blew away EPS expectations by 200%, so why is it down 10% post-market?"

If you see a stock with a seemingly unexpected response to positive (or even negative) earnings, there are a few key factors to check:

Are earnings priced in beforehand? What has happened over the trading sessions prior to earnings releases? It is very possible that investors have positioned themselves into companies reporting earnings, so you might see a small pop, no pop at all, or even some downward movement as those investors go into profit-taking mode.

Are you looking at key metrics other than EPS? EPS is great and all, but what else has the company done, and is it a sign of strength or weakness? A key metric that I point out a lot is subscribers for Netflix, but you can find this pretty easily by thinking about the industry or sector that the company fits into. Did Ford increase deliveries of F-150s (its bread and butter/high margin vehicle) YoY/QoQ? Did Boeing land and fulfill that snazzy new contract to deliver planes to Delta? How are Teva's generic prescription sales? Make sure to also look at competitors for their relative performance, and to see how market share has shifted or been redistributed.

Liquidity fade affecting institutional investors I used to work at a fund that ran a pre/post-market strategy to take advantage of earnings reports and other news releases. We did get burned on a couple of occasions where we were able to build sizable positions pretty quickly, only to see the opposite side of the book fade away when it was time to exit. We would then have to choose whether to take a bath and close out, or hedge up and maintain exposure overnight. We often flattened our positions to avoid holding overnight risk, but we would be fighting other traders who were also exiting, amplifying the pullback/reversal. What was originally a big pop was later reduced to a small blip, because the liquidity thinned out.

I'll edit this post if any other major factors come to mind, but just know that there are rational explanations behind movements that, on first glance, appear irrational.

For those who own hay fields, what’s your annual return selling hay?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 06:59 PM PST

Also, do you just own the land or also harvest it? If you only own the land, how do you split the crop with the farmer? Where do you list it for sale? How is hay priced?

The roll out of 5G, the IOT and rapid international growth is driving American Tower’s stock price higher

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:53 PM PST

American Tower (AMT), the real estate investment trust that leases space on communications sites and towers is now the biggest REIT in the world with 150,000 sites in its portfolio.

Its stock price has risen 43% over the past year and now has a yield of just 1.9% - but with the rapid growth in the number of connected devices it doesn't look like either the business growth or stock price and going to end any time soon. Orbis Research forecast demand for data will increase by 21% CAGR until 2021.

    The demand will be driven primarily by;

    • tower companies look set to benefit as networks compete to be first to deliver a 5G network

    • the collapse of the Sprint/T-Mobile merger means Sprint will need to invest in its network. Sprint, which was already being placed last in network quality rankings, has said it will will up its network capex in a big way with reports that it will triple its spend to $5 billion

    • this month AT&T announced that all 50 U.S. states had decided to opt into FirstNet, a Federal government-backed communications network that will be built and operated by AT&T to provide connectivity for first responders across the country

    • Internationally, American Towers revenues are growing by double digits in every region. Don't be fooled by the name, over 70% of AMTs towers and 45% of revenues are generated internationally with a strong focus on India and Brazil.

The stock has seen some great gains recently but with huge prospects, domestic and international, and with AMT's clever targeting of growth markets and fast growing multinational wireless companies -- the outlook for long term growth and for AMT's stock price look bright.

This post is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security or derivative. Stocks are not suitable for all investors. Please do your own research.

    Meeting Warren Buffett

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 09:01 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I am a senior at University and I need some help. I am currently enrolled in a class that takes a trip to meet Warren Buffett every year. I was super excited until I learned that there are a lot of students enrolled in this class and only a few people actually get to go. The selection process is based solely on the strength of the question they want to ask Warren. I've been brainstorming all day but was curious what you all think!

So my question for you all is: if you got to ask Mr. Buffett one question, face to face, what would it be and why?

    Whatever happened to 3-D printing?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:25 PM PST

A few years ago, stocks related to 3-D printing were soaring, and a lot of the discussion about the technology seemed similar to what is being said about blockchain today: It will decentralize manufacturing, change the structure of business, etc. Today, charts for the major 3-D printing companies at near all-time lows. What happened? Is there any chance for a turnaround?

Why is Boeing Crushing the Market?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 12:42 PM PST

Boeing has not been growing sales for the past 3 years, and net income is not growing but it remains consistent? If investors are this optimistic, does it make sense to have a value investing approach like Buffet or Graham?

Robinhood to offer crypto trading !/?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 03:16 AM PST

How am I just hearing about this? With all of the crypto-chatter and RH talk I'm amazed.

Here's a link to the announcement

I haven't been caught up in the whole crypto thing other than being long NVDA. The first time I looked into it the ridiculous fees turned me away from it.

Then I came back a couple months later with a new determination. This time I even signed up but when it came to funding the account they wanted me to use my credit card with a 4% fee or they wanted MY BANK USERNAME AND PASSWORD. So out a sit.

I'm also not a big RH guy but at least I know who they are. This move (even if the fees remain) may offer a curmudgeon like me access to this market.

How can I convince my 50yo father to add bonds in his portfolio?

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 06:29 PM PST

I'm trying to make him understand that stocks might not outperform bonds in the next 10-15 years and that he probably won't lose much return compared to the volatility lost (better Sharpe ratio). Are there any articles regarding this matter or comparaisons of 100% stocks vs 80/20 portfolios? I told him that in the past 10 years canadian bonds outperformed canadian stocks. I'm pretty sure his FA is gonna say something like "STOCKS OUTPERFORM IN THE LONG RUN" or that he shouldn't change his asset allocation because stocks have high valuations (even though that's not why he should have bonds). So I would like to have pretty convincing arguments if possible!

    Thank you

Edit: he wants to have a safer portfolio, he's just not sure bonds are the best way to diversify and he thinks they don't have a good return.

No one on here is discussing the flattening of the yield curve and with it the likelihood of a recession in 18months.

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 05:01 PM PST

    [1]http://www.businessinsider.com/treasury-yield-curve-may-be-set-to-steepen-some-market-experts-say-2018-1

    [1b]https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-01-16/inverted-yield-curve-is-in-the-air-as-flattening-takes-the-reins

I read all the permabull posts everyday. But no one here is discussing about some of the factual road blocks ahead of which there are two:

    1) Inversion of the yield curve.

    2) Demographic shift of baby boomers moving out of equities and into fixed income as interest rates move higher will accelerate it. 3% on the 10 year treasury seems to be the magic number.

Which is why the equities seem like they will moon but if the yield curve gets closer to inverting, they'll be a huge market correction.

    Your favorite bond ETFs?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2018 01:37 AM PST

I'm looking at bonds for the first time in my investing/trading career, because it seems yields will slowly begin to go up in the foreseeable future, which I gather is a sign for many investors to start shifting some of their investments. Of course I can (and have) Googled this, but there are a lot to choose from. What bond ETF might be a good mid-range to long-range hold, in your opinion? Also, do they offer dividends and DRIP like some other ETFs?

    Withdrawing from IRA

    Posted: 31 Jan 2018 09:45 PM PST

Pretty new and a while back I spent some money on stocks, but purchased them inside a Roth IRA account by accident. I sold all my shares and transferred the money to a regular brokerage account, which was an early deduction. I withheld 10% federal and 10% state from a total amount of $699; is this alright? Please ignore my ignorance.

ROIC and Stock Returns: It’s All About the Incrementals
