Resources to learn more about GAAP?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 05:19 PM PST

I'm (21/M) a stat major and I recently accepted an internship to work for a large bank who asked me to have a basic understanding of GAAP. Basically, I'm just not sure where to begin and would love some advice. Online textbooks? Good articles?

    Thanks in advance

My parents close friend is a CPA but has his own business or something, he told my parents last year he made $200,000 after taxes. He has a super nice 5,000 square footish house and 2 new bimmers and a c7 corvette. How can you start your own business in accounting? He does my parents taxes for them

When it is your Last Day in Public Accounting...

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 04:58 PM PST

I'm College Senior who has been incorrectly filing taxes, how much will this be an issue when trying to get the CPA license (in California).

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 10:23 AM PST

Basically, my grants/scholarships is thousands of dollars over annual tuition. As a freshman, my family's tax preparer stated that we had to record the grants/scholarships as income. To us this didn't make any sense because I didn't "work to get the money" so how could it be income? The tax preparer agreed to omit the grants/scholarship.

Fast forward to senior year, decided to finally take a tax class (doing audit instead of tax for a career so I postponed taking tax). Learned that you do in fact have to report grants/scholarships if its greater than tuition+books+supplies.

How screwed am I? Tax preparer (small CPA firm) says shes not sure what to do or how it would affect my chances of getting CPA licensed. I asked her if we should just report it on this year and fix the prior years but she says she's not sure.

If I am seeking a Risk Advisory Internship, will they heavily weigh my grades?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 08:45 PM PST

I'm really interested in getting an accounting internship or a risk advisory internship. I am studying Business but haven't declared my specialization yet and would like to explore/experience what Accounting is like before declaring. I am also minoring in Maths because I enjoy it. My issue is my first year grades were bad, and have been weighing my GPA down. Hence, I don't think I seem like a good candidate to accounting firms (big or small) because of this. Does anyone who has had specific experience with a risk advisory co-op or staff accounting co-op have some advice on how to outweigh the grades if possible?

Need Advice. New business didn't keep records, what to expect the first time filing taxes.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 10:18 PM PST

Hi I know this sub is mainly meant for people who are accountants, but I was hoping I could get some advice about a messed up situation I put myself in.

Last year I started a house cleaning business in AZ and incorporated as a single member LLC. In our first 12 months we did 65k in revenue. I kept 0 receipts or records for miles. I did 0 quarterly tax payments. I paid independent contractors ~14k, but only reported about 9k because I only received W9 forms from 2 of the contractors. I also used the same checking account for business transactions and every day life.

What should I do about filing my taxes this year? How much could I realistically expect to pay to the IRS? Would a CPA help me? How does the process of working with a CPA work? I am nervous to even meet with one because of my ugly situation.

I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. I wasn't sure where else to turn. I probably shouldn't be running a business with how negligent I have been the past year.

14 years old and wants to be CPA when I grow up

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 08:55 PM PST

Ok, I'm 14 in the 9th grade. I get pretty good grades that puts me over 4.0 gpa. My dad is a assurance Partner. I want to be a CPA when I grow up.

Is there anything I should start doing now at this young age?

Is it bad I want to go in same career path as my father?

I know it is not easy to become a CPA (graduate high school, get into college, 5 yr. degree with internship and CPA test)

    Sophomore Accounting Major

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 05:06 PM PST

Hey guys, I go to school and I'm looking to become an accountant. I love numbers and all the things I've learned so far are amazing to me and they're really making this seem like it's the right choice. However, I'm now in intermediate 2 and things are getting tougher. I know a good amount for the most part, but sometimes I forget what to name journal entries (Warranty expense, etc.) I fill in the numbers but have no clue what to label the entries. This is somewhat disheartening and scares me for the future. I've tried my best and have had decent grades but I fear that I won't make it once I graduate.

I love accounting and am not scared by it, but the stuff I'm learning and how I have to specifically know so much is scaring me. Is the work outside of work similar? What should I do make this a little bit easier on myself and worrying so much?

am I an idiot for considering leaving?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 04:07 PM PST

I'm a transfer pricing staff (B4) and have been working for about a year. Well — I recently got an offer that pays around 40% more for an ecommerce sales position, but it is in a higher COL area. I like my job or team for the most part, and I find TP work pretty interesting. I guess I just am kind of annoyed by the pay. What should I be considering here to make a decision I won't regret? Any guidance here is much appreciated.

I want to be a Financial Analyst, where do I start? What job in B4?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 09:27 AM PST

My longterm goal is to be some sort of financial analyst running financials for a corporation (budget, projections, cash flow, project management, etc.)

What role in one of the big 4s should I aim for? I'm studying accounting (but I believe the transition from accounting to finance even with an accounting degree wouldn't be a big issue as most places care about experience and not the specific major).

I guess I'm trying to get with Apple or Microsoft, like a big corporation, and I think B4 experience would make my resume more enticing, but looking at the jobs at B4, it's like audit/tax which isn't really financial analyst-ish. What roles should I be looking for? Or should I try to look for roles in industry/government as a financial analyst, would that be more helpful in my case?
