Does anyone regret quitting big 4 early?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 01:41 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Anyone regret leaving the big 4 early on in their career?

Just curious, first year associate who absolutely hates his job lol. Seeing if it's worth sticking it out 3-5 years.

What kind of jobs can I get with a Quickbooks Certification?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 07:44 AM PST

Going into college for accounting next year and I am in the process of earning my Quickbooks Certification. Currently I'm doing some basic accounting for free for a friend out of Google Sheets which is the most painful process I can imagin. I plan on working through college and I figure Quickbooks is somthing I can make use of in a city of near endless startups. Is that enough to keep get basic bookkeeping jobs as a freshman/sophomore in college?

    Reaching out to Recuiters

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 05:49 PM PST

What are some good ways to reach out to recruiters of firms you have no previous relationship with? Need to transition to a bigger city and want to make a move to a bigger firm as well. Problem is I don't know anyone from the offices I want to work in. Is it bad form to send a message to a recruiter on LinkedIn?

Has anyone gotten an interview with one of the big 4 with a 3.2 gpa?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 08:25 PM PST

Campus interviews are coming up soon. I applied for a couple of internships on my campus website. I'm wondering if there is an actual chance I'd be selected.

Is anyone else sick of sticking out accounting just to strengthen their resume?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 09:47 PM PST

I am just an intern, and cannot imagine being a full time auditor. It sounds miserable. The work is not appealing but the job security that accounting provides is. Should I move on with grad school, CPA, and the career or leave and do something more interesting to me right now?

Big 4, might get fired within hours, how should I react or prepare?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 09:45 PM PST

Today is the final deadline, the financial statements are supposed to be signed and emitted TODAY. I haven't finished auditing yet and it is 1 AM (also have to take into account it is +6 or 7 hours in the Primary Team's country). I won't be able to finish, I am ghost ticking a fuckton of stuff. This is a big global important company known everywhere by everyone. I was in charge of auditing 3 of their most important companies.

We are a component team. The primary team will kill our partner, our partner will kill me. I already suffer from anxiety and panic and other shit. I was already a special case for other fuck ups, there is no one to blame but me.

Not trying to say I am a victim. Work had to be done, I failed, now there are consequences that I have to assume. I just don't know what to do or say in the next couple hours I'll be scolded/fired.

The truth is the high stress from work made me relapse back to substance abuse and a strong episode of anxiety and depression (I've been in psych wards already). Substance abuse led me to being disoriented at work, plus the lack of sleep, client not giving information in time, everyone from the team workin 12-20 hours everyday for more than a month.

I was planning in jumping ship within the next 12-24 months and sort my shit, wasn't expecting to fail miserably hard and get humiliatingly fired and scolded by everyone.

    Difficulty taking PTO time...

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 06:52 AM PST

Just looking for some other perspectives and thoughts on my experience; hopefully doesn't sound like am complaining too much...I am in industry and only work 40hrs/week but am struggling with the fact that I can't even take a day off without being overflowed with work upon returning to try and keep up...(I also rarely take breaks during normal weeks. Feeling burnt out).

We get plenty of PTO but most of us cap out because in order to take time off we need to burden 2-4 other co-workers just to cover our day-to-day work and we still come back with tons of crap to deal with that they couldn't because they are all at full workloads already too.

Are other industry jobs like this? I put a high value on travel/PTO and would much prefer a job where I can feel comfortable taking 1-2 days off at a time without returning to a shit storm of catch-up work. Is this unrealistic and do people just deal with it?

Anyway, thanks for reading the rant. Interested to see what others experiences are.

Should I restart my career by going into Big4?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:47 AM PST

I'm 27, maybe going through a quarter-life crisis. I have my CPA and have never worked in public. I've been doing a lot of research of different roles on my own and from this sub there are 2 jobs that stick out to me as interesting. SEC/External Reporting and FP&A/Financial Analysis. I feel like since I never worked in public, my changes for both these roles are really low since both job postings usually have asked for public experience. Should I go into public (sort of a career reset) or should I apply anyway? Realistically what are my chances? Also does Big4 offer FP&A related roles?

    • I have 2 jobs out of college, one is working with tax compliance focused on FATCA at a bank. My current job is as a staff accountant working with 1099/1042 reporting, month-end journal entries, and reviewing reports of our India team and reporting that to upper management.

    • There's no internal career growth at my current company so I can't move internally to those groups

    • I work in a F100 company, so I sort of want to stay at a bigger company/industry

    • What type of clients (Sports teams, family-owned business etc)?

Do you see a lot of resumes with 0.5 inch margins?

Starting my accounting degree this summer. Advice?

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 11:42 AM PST

    Hello there

I am switching majors from engineering to accounting and I just got accepted into the university I applied for (taking it at a state school) and will be starting to take classes this summer. I know its the time of year where most of you guys are working heavy hours, but I wanted to ask what was undergrad like for you guys? And do you have any recommendations for a prospective accountant?

I currently have a couple years experience and should be able to finish CPA sometime this year. How long did it take you to achieve a decent salary as in at least 80-85k?

How to get the interview? (Intern)

    Posted: 25 Feb 2018 12:41 PM PST

I'm having a hard time getting properly recruited. I live in Houston and go to the University of Houston, which is a great school with great resources. My GPA is competitive (over 3.5), with a Vice President title in one of the largest student organizations on campus (business and non-business), and I am in an accelerated 5 years MS ACCY program. I transferred to the University last spring and joined the student org, made my way into the leadership team in the fall and failed to get a summer internship that semester. I knew I needed more exposure so I did the 5 year accelerated program, went to every career fair/mixer/info session, and moved up into a VP spot in my org. Yet, I'm still having trouble getting the interview. I've met and followed up with recruiters, but I feel like others are way ahead of me (being in the firms leadership programs and such).

What more can I do? (serious question. Legitimately, what else should I do to get the interview?) Ultimately, I want to get my CPA. I want to land in the Big 4, and when I talk to past recruiters they tell me they see big 4 in me. Im set to graduate with my BBA in Spring 2019 and MS ACCY Spring 2020 so I feel like I'm running out of time.
