Partner Came In To Work Huge & Freaky

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 05:09 PM PST

The managing partner of my firm came in with that Big Lenny look, 350lbs RIPPED. He high profilin, strofilin past my desk to the breakroom, grabbed a donut, looked at me and said "it's just a little treat huehuehuehue".

Big 4 Staff quit, blaming me, what should I do?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 12:18 PM PST

I am an audit senior. I was discussing some procedures with a staff and she told me to stop being rude, packed her things and blocked me without explaining anything. I worked with her for MONTHS with jokes and giggles and today this happens.

I don't understand how I was rude. I am always very polite, I always speak in a passive language ("you could do X", instead of "you must do X") and say please and thank you.

Apparently already half office knows staff X quit because of my fault, but I never had problems with anyone before. I even asked a manager if he has heard any staff complaints about me and said no.

What should I do? I am already somewhat conditional because of my personal fuckups unrelated to work. There is a negative bias towards me because people don't like me by default (weird friendless shy guy with nerd hobbies). I am sorry for having a shitty upbringing and adolescence, the depression, upbringing abuse and getting paranoid on social situations is clearly my fault.

This is stressing me so much. A manager told me she will discuss this with partners and lots of people. This staff even asked me for a formal review and I gave her an above average review and good comments in the past

Does pwc and the other big 4 do their own tax returns?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 04:46 PM PST

Like do they assign staff to prepare pwc's tax return or do they have a different b4 firm do it for them?

Accounting Student curious what goes on in day to day operations. Be as brief or as specific as you'd like, mentioning things like whether you're in private/industrial, job title could be useful information as well. Thank you

Going to first audit as an intern. Advice?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 06:48 AM PST

I'm an intern at a CPA firm and my manager just emailed me and said we were leaving for my first audit in 2 hours.

What do I do?? Should I stay out of the way? Should I ask questions? Should I try and communicate with the client? Should I jump on the table and bogart my own meeting Michael Scott style? What constitutes as professional decorum? I want to prove I'm ready and eager to learn but I don't want to get in the way of the job.

    Professor horror stories

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 03:11 PM PST

Everyone in my intermediate 2 class is having an awful time. Assignment instructions are given after grading, no covering assigned homework, lectured about Diluted EPS for literally 1 minute, gets defensive when concepts aren't understood and approached during office hours. I'm fortunate enough to be able to teach myself out of the book, but I know many people in there are lost beyond belief. By nature this class is definitely tough, but this teacher is taking it to another level.

Does anyone have any stories about bad accounting professors worth sharing?

Leaving BIG 4 after first busy season - need advice?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 05:13 AM PST

I know this is a common topic. I started B4 Audit last summer. I am in my first busy season. And I hate it.

I'm not cut out for this life. My commute to the office is 1 hr and 30 mins. And my commute to the client is a 15 min drive to the train-station, a 1 hr 15 min train ride, and a 20 min subway ride. I can't move to the city, as I am working super hard to pay off my loans and my car. I am almost finished with a year end I had started in January but I still need to do a bunch of work for it. I have 2 other clients I am scheduled to right now as well, and it's getting really ridiculous how they are trying to use me as much as possible. I've heard stories but this is ridiculous.

I'm so overwhelmed. My boyfriend is upset at me because I have no time to text/call/meet with him during the day and the only time we see each other is when I get back at home at around 9-10pm and FaceTime, or even later if I need to work.

I don't know what to do anymore. Please give me some advice. Should I start looking for a job now? Or after busy season? Im going to try to suck it up until after busy season to not leave my team in a shit hole - partially reason why I want to leave also is because my senior in this engagement is absolute garbage at managing and coaching me.

Any advice...? I didn't think I'd burn out this soon in the game...

Audit, Tax, Consulting, Or something else?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 10:08 PM PST

I am applying to big 4 internships for 2019 and I am not sure which accounting service to specialize in. If someone could elaborate what day to day tasks each of the main big 4 accounting services provide (Audit, tax, etc) and convince me of choosing one over the other, I would be very appreciative.

I was thinking of doing audit but i heard it is hard to get into audit internships. And I didn't get any callbacks last year when I applied to audit internships. So maybe if I apply to tax it will be easier to get my foot in the door?

    Any help is appreciative.

    An Audit & Technology question

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 09:59 PM PST

Started about 6 months ago at PwC. I'm passionate about the automation of auditing procedures and how it will change the profession for the better.

Are there people to reach out to where you can talk to them about being part of the audit teams where those emerging technologies get tested in the field?

Got a promotion! ...but the raise sucks. How to handle?

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 07:12 AM PST

Hey all, I'm seeking some advice on salary. I work at a F500 company and do general ledger accounting/supervising.

I was recently promoted from Senior Accountant (team lead of three Staffs) to Accounting Supervisor. I'm pumped about the promotion, but the raise is only 9%. I'm also no longer eligible for our annual merit increase, which would have been ~3%. So effectively my raise is just 6%. I was happy with my old salary at Sr Acct, but underwhelmed by my Acct Supervisor salary.

I haven't signed the offer letter, and I'm wondering if I should try to negotiate a new salary. Does anyone have any advice or experience they're willing to share?

Looking for Pro Bono Tax Accountant in New York City for Non-profit Corporation

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 02:38 PM PST

Hi Reddit, I recently adopted a puppy from a newly formed nonprofit animal rescue service. They asked me if I knew of any firms that would do pro bono tax filing for them since they're so new and don't have adequate funds yet.

Does anyone know where I could begin looking for such a firm?

    Thanks in advance.

Opinions on CPA possibilities with a criminal record

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 12:49 PM PST

I'm an anxious sophomore in college and I'm planning on doing a double major in Accounting and MIS. However, I want to obtain my CPA afterwords. I have some major blemishes on my record unfortunately (Felony Aggravated Robbery, Misdemeanor Burglary of Vehicle). I was 19 when it happened, and I know I made extremely poor choices. Texas offers a "deferred adjudication" program and once completed the cases are dismissed, and a non-disclosure can be filed. I realize the licensing board will still see these and I will be expected to address them. I am just looking for some honest opinions. Am I wasting my time even bothering to go into accounting? I realize it'll be a major issue trying to get licensed, but has anyone ever had personal experience or know of this ever happening? Will the fact they are not convictions help my case in any way?

    Getting licensed in IL

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 08:16 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

Quick question. I am currently taking the cpa exams and expect/hope to be finished this summer. I already have the work experience met.

Does anyone know if IL does a credit check as a requirement for licensing? I have a Chapter 7 on my report from about 6 years ago that is dragging down my score. No late or missed payments since then, and all the negative information leading up to the Chapter 7 has since been removed. No criminal history whatsoever.

I haven't been able to find anything that leads me to believe this would prevent me from being licensed, but I thought I would check on here.

    Thanks!

How did you study for accounting

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 02:11 PM PST

Hey guys just looking for some general advice or what you found works for you

My Intro to accounting class years ago I studied for like any theory course, taking excellent notes and memorizing them only to realize the problems on the exam were 90% mechanical. Needless to say I did poorly

Since then I've done better in intermediate and tax by essentially ignoring the theory and doing countless problems.

What are some effective ways you studied?

Starting Becker CPA Course... Have Some Questions

    Posted: 08 Feb 2018 08:02 PM PST

Hi, guys. Just started studying for CPA using Becker(finished first chapter today). Couple of questions

    1) I see people mention "homework" alot... is this the MCQs? 2) Is there a way to get more mcq... it seems there is about 20-25 per module but I would like to be able to get more of a review. 3) Deeper in do they give a "test" featuring mcq from different chapters, as a way to review? 4) Did the SIMS, and it seems like the explanations are sort of lacking. They do show you the answer, but it isnt a great explanation of it...any advice on this?

    Thank you in advance.
