Why does every car insurance company want to change me over $300+/month, when Geico is only charging around $150?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 05:47 PM PST

When I got off my parents insurance a few years ago the only company that was less than $200 was Geico. Everyone else was $300 or more. I just did a quote with Allstate and they wanted $564/month. My last at fault accident was in 2009. I have no problem with Geico, but people have been telling me that they'll drop you for no reason sometimes.

Clean driving record, quoted insurance is $10,000 a year

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:34 PM PST

How is this even possible? I'm 21 right now and I have ZERO offenses. I have no tickets, nothing, I even paid a fee just to receive my driving record to prove to my insurance. I talked to them and they can't explain tell me why I have to pay so much despite having a clean driving record other than "I'm a young driver so I'm a high risk driver." What? How? I'm currently being quoted for $825 for Progressive, $885 for Geico, and $900 for Plymouth Rock. This is with high deductible collision and comprehensive. Everything else is around minimal coverage. I've had my insurance paid for by my grandma but I thought it was time to take financial responsibility for my car and living. But at these prices, I could probably live in my car at best. I currently drive an Acura RSX but I had enough to save up for a new car, but I've looked up quotes for a new car and it's even MORE expensive. These prices are absurd, is there any way to reduce them other than growing older? Is there a reason why my quoted prices are so high? I honestly can't think of much... Here is an example of one of my quotes

Multiple travel insurances for different periods of a stay abroad

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 02:37 AM PST

    Hi people,

I'm from Denmark, and about to go on an exchange to Finland for 4 months. I have an insurance package which includes a 60 days travel insurance.

It is possible to prolong the travel insurance, but it is quite expensive.

Hence I've been looking elsewhere, and found an international student travel insurance specially tailored for exchange students, which is much cheaper.

My question is, is it possible/acceptable/legal to apply for this student travel insurance, with coverage for my time abroad minus the first 60 days? I'm thinking, this way I would be insured by my Danish provider for the first 60 days, and afterwards I would be covered by the student travel insurance.

As it is no option for me to cancel my current insurance, my only other options would be to either pay the high price of prolonging my current travel insurance, or applying for a coverage from the student travel insurance for the full period. In the second case, I'm guessing that I would be covered twice for the first 60 days?

I wrote the student travel insurance company, but unfortunately they were unable to give me a clear answer, and I fear that it was simply an attempt to make me apply for their most expensive insurance.

Hope that someone in here can help me in this regard, and I hope the question isn't too silly, but the whole insurance-business looks like a jungle to me.

    Thanks a lot in advance!

My office was wrecked this morning by a burst pipe. The pipe goes to the Condo building’s garden spigot. The condo board has already acknowledged liability. Should I also file a claim for personal property with my homeowner’s insurance?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 02:43 PM PST

My current estimated personal property damage (not including carpet, drywall, etc) is somewhere between 5k and 10k, mostly in computers, furniture, electronics, and merchandise, but also a good amount of collected original artwork.

I've been getting conflicting advice on how to proceed. This is a first for me, and I'm still a bit shell shocked.

    Thanks in advance!

Will a 3 year old lie to car insurance come back to haunt me?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:23 AM PST

My friend was driving my car (both of us insured, both around age 19) when he was involved in a minor fender bender. We sorted things out with the other party, told the police officer the truth, and moved on. Long story short, we stupidly told insurance that it was myself who was driving as to avoid conflict with my friend and my parents (extremely stupid, I know).

Everything has seemed to be fine since then regarding the issue. My only worry is A) Can I still be charged for this, and to what degree and B) Will I have to deal with legal issues down the line when looking for new insurance?

Posted this in legaladvice as well, though figured it may also be relevant here. Thank you!

Unsure about switching to (relatively lesser known) auto insurance companies.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:52 PM PST

I'm currently insured with Progressive auto insurance, and my 6 month rate is $900 for a 1 year old compact sedan. I have no at fault or not-at-fault accidents in the past 5 years. I'm currently shopping around for alternate/better options, and here's what I've been quoted:

    • Geico will cost $750 for 6 months for similar coverage and deductibles.

    • Erie will cost $1150 for 12 months for five times the coverage and similar deductibles with auto plus (totaled car will be replaced with a car two years newer and 20k miles lesser).

    • The Cincinnati insurance company will cost $78 a month for roughly four times the coverage and similar deductibles.

Here are my questions: 1. Are Erie and Cincinnati insurance companies dependable? 2. The Erie insurance agent says that Erie is extremely selective when it comes to adding new clients and that it only provides insurance to low risk (no or very few accidents on record) clients, hence the premiums are kept low for all. While the argument makes sense, is this true? 3. I haven't seen any ads for Erie or the Cincinnati insurance. Does it mean there's something fishy? 4. The Auto plus plan ( if the car is totaled, you'll be paid the cash value of a car that is two model years newer and 20000 miles lesser) sounds too good to be true. Am I missing something? 5. If your answer to question 1 is yes, based on the information I gave above, can you please suggest which one to go for (Erie vs Cincinnati)? Thanks!

Location is Central Indiana. Thanks again for your time!

Rear Ended, NAF, in Colorado. Feeling headache (like brain tossed), sore. Will rates go up with Progressive if I file an insurance report?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:44 PM PST

I was stopped at a red light and rear ended this evening in Boulder. I'm filing the police report now. I seriously don't want my rates to go up. I have one prior very minor accident (hit a parked car while parking) in 2015.

[Car Insurance] What is an ideal bodily injury limits to get? I think I might be overpaying for $50,000/$100,000?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 11:05 AM PST

My insurance is about to renew, and I'm planning to save some bucks because am poor.

Background: I drive a typical 2009 Honda Civic that has low mileage (60K) and fully paid, and am also a safe guy driver in his early 30's and single. Location is SoCal (close to Los Angeles area). I drive anywhere from 300-600 miles a month.

Currently, the Bodily Injury Limits is set to 50K/100K (ie., $50K per person and $100K per accident).

Thinking of selling my agency, am I crazy?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:45 PM PST

I just entered my third year. Things are going well about could be better. The thing is, I enjoy insurance and find it interesting but HATE running a business. I've been kicking around the idea of selling my book and trying to get into underwriting or something similar in the industry. Aside from UW what are other insurance related jobs that will offer similar compensation?

    Or am I just nuts?

    Root insurance YouTube ads.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 02:17 PM PST

I get an ad for "Root" car insurance several times a day, and each time I am left a little dumbfounded.

They claim regular insurance is "unfair" because drivers that don't get into accidents' premiums pay for those that do. They then go further and say they refuse to insure "bad drivers" to avoid this.

What they are advertising seems to imply that the idea of a class of people who are uninsurable is good, which seems wrong to me.

With confusion about insurance already, especially health insurance, I really feel like these commercials are misinformed and harmful.

I have always felt insurance is the pooling of money to help those who need it, even when a for-profit company is involved. I do not work in insurance however, and wondered what insurance professionals thought of all this.

I did not link to the ads, but they are easy enough to find if you want to see for yourself.

My medical bill is higher with insurance than without - insurance fraud?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:06 AM PST

I had an outpatient procedure done at the end of November, and when I got my bill from a 3rd party billing service I noticed that it didn't look like my insurance was billed at all. So I called the company that billed me and they confirmed that they had no insurance on file. I told them I had insurance, so they told me to disregard the bill as they would reprocess it with my insurance.

Yesterday I got a new bill in the mail (this time is was from the hospital in which the procedure was done, not the 3rd party company like the last bill, not sure why...) and it now says I owe $50 more than I did before! I have not received an EOB (yet) but the bill does state that my insurance has been billed and it even shows an adjustment from the "orignal" total (which is $211 more than what I was being charged without insurance). Who should I contact? Should I wait for my EOB?

This is really discouraging. I have had another procedure since this one and more pending in the future, and I feel that my bills will all be higher than they would be if I didn't have insurance at all!

My car was just destroyed by falling ice

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:39 PM PST

My $4000 car was just totalled by falling ice. I was parked beside a school in a "no parking" zone due to the danger of falling ice. Obviously I will not include in the insurance report that it was a no parking zone. Will the insurance company likely call the school as part of their investigation? Should I be concerned?

Mortgage policy went up %22 when time for renewal.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:32 PM PST

My question is do insurance companies have to tell you why your policy changes so drastically? They told me I had an "adverse credit condition" with LexisNexis meaning my Insurance score dropped. After speaking with LexisNexis they said this is the first request and number they've supplied to the insurance company and can't tell me any record of what the insurance score and that they have no idea what the "adverse credit condition" is on my account and to ask my insurer. Well when I ask them they ask "did you talk to LexisNexis?"

I'm stuck in a do-loop with this and don't know what to do.

I've wanted to switch insurances for a while now but I've always been scared to. Having a rate hike of %22 with 11 years of no claims, no payments missed, and >750 credit score I'm dumbfounded as to why my rate keeps jumping up. Not the first time it's done this but the biggest for sure.

Any advice on finding out what the "adverse condition is" and if it's ok to swap insurers?

    Thanks!

Man backs into me and I have to pay deductable?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:20 PM PST

    My husband was driving.

We were pulling around the side of the bank to the window and a parked truck backs out and hits our driver side back door. He is at fault.

Our insurance company says they are reaching out to his insurance, but to file the claim with ours just to get the repairs taken care of and then get reimbursed by his insurance later.

We have a $1000 deductable that we would have to pay before our insurance pays. What's the point in him having insurance if I have to pay?? I don't really have $1000 to throw around.

I've never been in an accident before. Is this standard? Will I get my deductable refunded to me when his insurance repays?

Do I need insurance for car-sharing services or ride-sharing services?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 06:55 PM PST

I am going to get rid of my car because it requires expensive maintenance, and so will now be relying on ride-sharing services like Lyft and car-sharing services like car2go to get around my city. Should I take out a non-owners insurance policy, or do the companies doing car-sharing provide insurance that would cover things in the event of an accident (whether or not I caused it)? Thanks!

Or how else can I insure the roughly $3500 added value?

How do I handle being hit by an at-fault driver who provided an insurance policy that covers neither him nor his vehicle?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 12:03 PM PST

Hello all! I was hit by a man driving extremely carelessly in the snow on Christmas eve. He stopped, providing me with his license, registration, and insurance information, but fled the scene before the police could respond. The police report indicates the other driver being at 100% fault for the collision. Skipping some interim drama, I received a call from his insurance company today stating that he was not covered by the policy, and that they had no record of any insurance policy tied to the vehicle. As a first question, does his providing me a policy that does not cover him and may not even be legitimate constitute fraud?

The total damage to my vehicle is less than my deductible, so my insurance company is useless as well, including subrogation efforts.

To the experienced members of this subreddit, what is my best option to get my deductible back from this shitlord? If I can't get my money back, how can I cause him the most pain? Thank you all!

Edit: the weasel holds a chauffeur license in Indiana. The chauffeur license is listed as a type of CDL by the state. Can this be used as leverage? If so, how?

    Multiple Dog Attacks

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 06:00 PM PST

I have a pet Akita that doesn't like most little dogs. She has attacked a small dog in front of our house before while we were unloading groceries from the car and she was off leash. The other dog was on a leash and walking in front of our house. The bill ended up being about $500 and we reported it to our insurance company who promptly paid the victim with little questioning. Now fast forward a year or so to present day, and we took her to a friends house. She ended up attacking our friends little dog and it had to be taken to the vet. The overall bill was $600. At this point, should we just pony up the bill? How would the insurance agency act with a second reporting of an incident like this? Will they even pay it? If so, I assume this will effect rates and possible drop us...

Any advice would be much appreciated

Negotiating maximum amount from home insurance. California

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:14 AM PST

A few months back my house burned down due to a wildwire. 100% loss. The insurance company is still in the process of putting together a rebuild estimate. The dwelling was covered for ~800k + 200% of incurred costs. I have gotten a couple proposals from two architects and it is probably going to cost more than 800k to rebuild the home.

I do not want to rebuild the house. I don't want to spend the next 2 - 4 years in a crappy rental nor do I want to live in a place that is at risk of burning down again.

If the insurance estimate is over 800k, say 1 million for the sake of argument, is it worth negotiating to get paid out a portion of the 200k over? That is instead of rebuilding and receiving the remaining 200k as that cost is incurred, would the insurance company ever agree to a one time payout of 900k and we both move on with our lives?

Is there anything else I should focus on after I receive their estimate? Should I not bother with pushing it if the estimate is over 800k since that is the most they would pay out regardless unless the house is rebuilt?

    This is in California.

Question for Claims Adjusters that handle Rental Vehicles

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:09 AM PST

I work for a smaller insurance company. I don't handle auto, but all day I hear those that do argue with customers about the number of rental days.

For example, if the repair shop estimates 5 Repair Days, and it ends up taking them 8, we will often tell the customer we will not cover the additional 3 days, since it's the repair shops fault that they took their time and it ended up taking 3 extra days.

My question is - do other insurance companies do that? I feel like if I have rental coverage on my vehicle, something I pay extra for, I'd want the full amount available to me in the policy, since it really shouldn't be my responsibility to be hounding the repair shop to make sure it's done in the amount of days they said it would be done.

On a work trip, Locked Rental Car Broken into and ~$7000 worth of work and personal equipment stolen.

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 04:23 PM PST

Hi, I travel for work and carry a work laptop plus my 15 inch MacBook Pro on every trip. Today my rental was broken into and all my electronics were stolen along with my work laptop. My coworker that was traveling with me experienced the same loss. I know we have a travel insurance policy of some sort; but in this situation, would a good company replace everything that was stolen? Should I expect to get any help for my personal items that were stolen? I don't have info on our travel insurance policy, but am looking into it now. This break in happened in downtown SFO
