    Sharing experiences from recessions

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 05:31 AM PST

As a younger investor I would be very interested to hear stories from anyone who was investing during the last recession. Did you buy more? Did you sell? If you sold, did you have any problems unloading shares? If you didn't sell, how long did it take you to recoup?

    I really appreciate it.

    Investing $150 every paycheck

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:20 AM PST

A couple months ago I started getting into stocks and am setting aside $150 (what i can afford right now) every paycheck (2 weeks) to buy.

So far I've just been buying BOTZ and DIS. I currently have 24 shares of BOTZ and 4 shares of DIS.

They both seem like good (semi)long term investments, is this strategy a good idea?

    What to do with $1000?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 02:02 PM PST

So recently it was my 21st birthday and my grandma was generous enough to gift me $1000. I have always been interested in stocks but never put my cash in myself and traded myself. How would you guys suggest going about this? The $1000 is not like my whole bank account, I already have an account strictly for post-college days, so really the main goal would be to do some trades here and there. Thank you, guys.

My theory on why the stock market just doesn't crash anymore and why it will just keep going up..

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 12:42 PM PST

I know, famous last words "the market will keep going up" but hear me out.. In the last 19 years we have had three HUGE black swan events: Dot com bubble in 99, in 2001 9/11 and 08/09 the great recession..

Still, despite all of this, if you would have bought in 99, even at the height of the dot com crash, you would still have come out very vert wealthy today, even in the face of these three HUGE black swan events.

My theory is investors have finally woken up to the fact that no matter the black swan event, stocks ALWAYS rebound and just keep going up and as a result, investors have the "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me" mentality.

Think about it, the fact the stock market has gone up by a huge amount over the last 19 years despite these three big events, why would anyone sell and not buy into this market?!

It's why we just don't see major crashes anymore, it's why when a shock event happens like Brexit, Trump winning or North Korea, the market just shrugs it off and goes higher.

The bottom line is this market has just become shock resistant and it's why I will ALWAYS be bullish.

    Next Big Tech Wave?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:29 AM PST

What company do you think will pave the way for the next big technology pop. You could argue that since Apple released the iPhone there has not been any main stream technology adoption.

Oculus' VR headset is the closest thing I can think of but its not quite there. Maybe Amazon's echo, but that's essentially Siri with a big speaker strapped onto it.

What company do you think will change the world like Apple did with the Iphone?

How much do retail investors influence stock price?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 11:00 AM PST

Do retail investors have an affect on the stock price of a mid-cap company, or does it depend almost entirely on institutional activity?

Do share prices balance out with the dropping US Dollar?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:46 AM PST

Living in Canada so I need to convert CAD to USD before purchasing US stocks, I'm wondering if I am taking a huge loss on the dropping US Dollar if I sell off my stocks and convert back to CAD or do share prices already take this into consideration?

    Anybody else reaping profits today?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 09:40 AM PST

I have been planning on re-balancing my portfolio from being all in a Vanguard s&p 500 following EFT into ones that are more heavy into tech, mining, and manufacturing. Pulled out at 11:20 ET. So far looks like it was a good time...

Any suggestions for good ETFs on etrade?

    Question about wash sale

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 01:25 PM PST

If I buy a stock and then sell it for a loss. Let's say 1000$ . Then repurchase within 30 days and sell it shortly after for a profit of 500$. At the end of the year do I claim 500$ Profits or would I claim 500$ in losses?
What if I lost 500$ on the second trade, would I be able to claim a loss of 1500$

How do I know whether a stock's trade volume is high or low relative that that stocks normal performance.

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 12:53 PM PST

    For example:

$KO currently has a trade volume of 6,736,640 how do I know whether that is normal or if they usually have a trade volume of 15B?

Edit: Cringing hard at my error in the title. Sorry.

Learning Moving Averages and Chart Patterns

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 06:24 AM PST

I'm new to stock trading. How could I learn more about moving averages patterns to look for and other chart patterns (such as cup-and-handle).

Are there other patterns or tools available for me to learn these patterns?

AET- price potential w CVS buyout?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:59 AM PST

Health insurance stocks seem very bullish, and esp w tax reform I think could have big run ups. AET currently @185.6, if CVS acquisition goes through (July 2018ish), buyout is reported @ 207/ AET share. Is there a possibility AET stock goes above 207 before then, or will that be a ceiling?

Invested in a company's stocks in 2001, can't find the company on any stock exchange?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 05:32 AM PST

    Hi there,

My parents invested in two different companies in 2001.

One was called 'Skynet Telematics Inc' (based out of Nevada)

and the other was called 'World Wide Video Inc' (based out of Colarado)

I am not sure if they got scammed or not because I can't find these company listings on Bloomberg to check what the current stock price is. Are these real companies? If so where can I find the current stock prices? When they purchased the stocks were valued at 0.001 each.

    ETF browsing

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 07:32 AM PST

Does anyone know a good website where you can browse for ETFs that include multiple companies of your choice? For example if I want to buy an ETF that includes Amazon, Apple and Alphabet. Is there a website where you can select all three of them and then that website would show all ETFs with those three stocks? Because now I'm just browsing on Google all the time to find ETFs including only one company of my choice.

What are your guys thoughts on ALIGN Stock? Up almost 10 points today and their quarterly earnings report comes out Jan. 20th (approx)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 10:53 AM PST

Invested them a while back when my dentist gave me the aligners, I bought more when it fell back to 225, I feel like this company is going to be a huge money maker based on what I've been reading about it. Thoughts? They are the largest 3d printing company in the world right now which I think is cool. I remember when 3d printing was first getting started and thinking it would be great to have a way to invest in a company that uses it. I think Align might be that company...

What stock would you buy if you had a spare $3000 and lots of patience?

    Posted: 05 Jan 2018 10:21 AM PST

Just curious.....I have $3000 in my 401K in cash from a sale of something, I know that's not much, but I'd re-invest it and am looking at stocks. It's kind of fun to have a few to watch once in awhile and I only have one in my portfolio right now.....any hot ideas? thanks!

    Which would you pick?
