If everyone is 'expecting' an earnings beat, why is it still "unexpected"? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 09:18 AM PST seems like a contradiction to me. Isnt it possible that all the analysts are just purposely under-estimating earnings, thus making it more likely that companies beat expectations and go up, meaning everybody wins? I just dont understand when theres predictions like "84% chance of a beat". Like if its that high how is it still "beating expectations" when the expectation was that theyd beat? [link] [comments] |
$NPSNY and TenCent - discount opportunity? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 12:11 PM PST Often lost in all the news about TenCent is that a South African media conglomerate, Naspers Ltd, owns just under a third of the Chinese holding company. Their 2001 ~30M investment in TenCent is now worth just shy of $200B. Herein lies my question: Naspers has a market cap of around $110B, or about half of the value of their stake in TenCent. How is that possible (aside from the simple answer of it being the product of stock price x shares outstanding)? If I take out a position in Naspers (available as an OTC), am I essentially buying TenCent at a 40-50% discount? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:34 PM PST As I'm writing this FB is down about $10 in the after market. Bidding 177.8 x 177.9 compared to a closing price of 186.89. Volume is pretty significant as well. However, I'm also sitting here on FB's investor relations page, hitting F5 for a Q4 earnings update and... nothing. How can there possibly be this much trading going on? Is there a source that reports faster than the company's own investor relations page? [link] [comments] |

Why would a major company go public ? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:10 AM PST Just curious on redditor's thoughts on major companies transferring to private to being publicly traded? Is this a sign of weakness or them wanting to grow ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2018 09:02 AM PST Only trading at $9.50 a share through its OTC. P/E ratio is pretty low for a consumer retailer as big as it is at only 20x. Extremely good top management that has a heavy stake in the company 25% roughly and they just merged with Wal-Mart to go up against Amazon more. Thoughts on Rakuten (RKUNF)? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:05 AM PST What % of your account do you keep cash? I keep a lot in case of a buying opportunity but it's lost me what could have been huge gains in the last 6 months :( [link] [comments] |
Question not sure if it has been posted before. Posted: 31 Jan 2018 02:20 PM PST Why do some companies post great earnings yet the stock plummets significantly afterwards. For example FB had great earnings report today and the stock is now down almost 4% after hours [link] [comments] |
EA Earnings Report Q3 2018 | Talk About PUBG, Star Wars Controversy and eSports Posted: 30 Jan 2018 04:33 PM PST A very insightful and interesting Earnings report from EA, not shying away from the controversy of Star Wars (that sent Reddit into a melt-down) and talking about popular title's like PUBG. Portfolio + Investment advice w/ 10k extra to invest Posted: 31 Jan 2018 01:51 PM PST Started this Nov 2017. Current portfolio: Max 2018 ROTH IRA already. POSSIBLE investment with my 10k Am thinking to invest 500$ into a broker account each month and start moving any stocks with dividend into my ROTH IRA. How would I proceed? Might cost me some money but might be worth in the long run. THanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jan 2018 03:36 AM PST I've seen people who purchase and sell stocks the same day, how do they do that? How do they gather information at such a limited time and still manage to gain profit? [link] [comments] |
Is this good new or bad news for shareholders? (Patriot One Technologies) Posted: 31 Jan 2018 12:32 PM PST Hey guys, I have a big position (relative to my portoflio) on Patriot One, for those who don't know about $PTOTF, they are making concealed bio-scanners which scan for concealed weapons to prevent mass shootings. They recently got a ton of exposure after the Las Vegas shooting, and for a panel they did in LV where the support was unanimously positive. Today, some news was announced that to me, at face value seemed very positive, but is slightly over my head so I was hoping the geniuses and trolls of /r/stocks could help me out. So here is a summary of the news:
Mind you, the company has a market cap of only 157M and the current price is $1.77 so this is a huge deal for the company. Shortly after this was announced, The Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) put a halt on exchanging $PTOTF shares. It was subsequently resumed after they announced an "Increase to the Previously Announced Bought Deal Financing". It is stated that the original deal of 8.7M is now going to be worth 22M. NOW. This is where it gets confusing as f*** for me. "Each Unit will consist of one common share of the Company (a "Common Share") and one half of one Common Share purchase warrant (each whole Common Share purchase warrant, a "Warrant"). Each Warrant will be exercisable to acquire one Common Share (a "Warrant Share") for a period of 36 months following the closing of the Offering (the "Closing") at an exercise price of $2.40 per Warrant Share." So is this saying that they are also being given an call option of $2.40??? Okay, they are anticipating the share which is currently trading at $1.77 to go up to $2.40. That's good, right?? And then there is this: The Company has agreed to grant the Underwriters an over-allotment option to purchase up to an additional 1,650,000 Units at the Offering Price or up to 825,000 Warrants at a price of $0.30 per Warrant, exercisable in whole or in part, at any time on or prior to the date that is 30 days following the Closing. So this means that if they want, they can buy an additional 825,000 call options for $.30 per option. Correct? So all is fine and dandy in the world of PTOTF you would think. They just got a massive investment, they have a bunch of units on back order, their product is now saleable in 66 countries, and they've also said they have 13 huge contracts in the works, and a bunch of smaller ones. Okay. So, why did PTOTF poop the bed and drop by 8% percent today? I actually doubled down on my position during the dip. But I'm getting a little worried here that there is something I'm missing in these announcements that has everyone else pulling out. Could the price drop simple be due to the fact that the IIROC put a halt on exchanging PTOTF? Thank you all for your thoughts and efforts. Enter now for AAPL longterm or wait till earnings ? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 12:00 PM PST I want to invest long term in Apple and thought I could use this small dip to enter. There is no doubt they are going to beat the earnings but will the shares go even down if they reduce their next quarter's forecast by more than estimated amounts? [link] [comments] |
Banks raise oil price forecast to $70 Posted: 31 Jan 2018 11:21 AM PST JP Morgan raises oil price forecast to $70. All other banks agree to this estimate. It's funny all those forecasted oil price below $20 when oil price hit $20. Nobody found any fundament for oil price rise. The abundance of supply and less demand should have pressed oil prices down Some even forecasted oil price to be $5. Many including CNN thought Saudi Arabia would be bankrupt. Where is oil price heading now? Would it hit $100 again? [link] [comments] |
Is Tencent really at a $700B dollar market cap? Posted: 30 Jan 2018 02:22 PM PST Google shows its market cap at 4.39 Trillion Yaun which is equal to $694 billion dollars in market cap. Is this really it's market cap or is google wrong? This would make it the 4th largest company in the world while growing at an absurd rate. If this keeps up it beat apple to the $1 Trillion dollar mark. Unreal [link] [comments] |
Should I enter stock market again? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:40 AM PST I used to be a stock trader and want to trade again. let me describe my background briefly. I started trading in 2007. I was just an amateur trader but made good money in the beginning. I am Danish national and financial contract with a Danish company called Saxo Trader. Then things went very wrong during the financial crisis in 2008-2009. I lost all my money in my account. I thoughts that stocks would bounce back. I used all my savings and all liquidity in stock trading. It was a bad gambling and I lost my last penny. In last eight years, I have not touched any stock. I have worked hard and one extra university degree. I have again considerable savings. I don't want to be a day trader. I want to be a short time trader. I am hesitating to enter trading again. What are your general suggestions? Should I step in? Is it the right time to enter the market? If yes, which trading platform.I am just looking for a general idea. [link] [comments] |
ONCY Oncolytics Biotech - SELL or HOLD? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:36 AM PST Anybody have this stock? i'm down on this, I would need it to go to 90 cents to break even. what should I do, sell now or hold [link] [comments] |
Is Chesapeake Energy (CHK) a "buy" right now? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 10:23 AM PST I posted earlier asking what people thought about the recent layoff at the firm, and whether that was a good or bad sign. Just wanted to see if you guys thought that this dip in share price is a good indication to buy, or whether it should be dumped. [link] [comments] |
What to listen for during earnings calls? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 09:02 AM PST Anyone have tips or resources on what to listen for during earnings calls? Obviously want to hear "good news" but what exactly is good news? I'm thinking people listen for: 1) earnings growth. Not just quarterly or yearly growth, but did it beat expectations? How do you guys figure out what the investor's "expectations" are? I've seen positive earnings growth and stock plummets since expectations were too high. 2) any news of expansion/future growth opportunities/acquisitions. [link] [comments] |
Is it a bad idea to hold individual stocks in a tax advantaged account(IRA)? Posted: 31 Jan 2018 08:43 AM PST I was thinking of buying some AMZN with money in my IRA. Other than the fee to purchase and more volatility is there any major downside? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2018 05:27 PM PST So this biotech has been doing well and I am long in it but I'm not sure what is going on. They released 11.6M shares today which should drive the price per share down normally, right? However it closed out with over a 6% gain in an otherwise poor market day. Should I be nervous? Be gentle, I'm less than a year investing. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/cymabay-announces-pricing-public-offering-130000208.html [link] [comments] |
