Stocks - 5 Stocks to watch this week [Jan8-12]

5 Stocks to watch this week [Jan8-12]

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:16 PM PST

Last week was absolutely amazing. I hope everyone here had good gains and took profits as well! My picks from last week did exceptionally well:

    • GOOGL - 5.4%

    • BABA - 10.6%

    • V - 4.24%

    • PYPL - 6.9%

    • QQQ - 3.95%

Looking into this week, we are due for some consolidation or pullback, but there are a still plays that could work out this week. As always, I have this in video format which you can watch here if you don't want to read this block of text.

    1. Apple (AAPL) - So although tech had a big week, Apple kind of lagged behind. It's a slow mover, BUT, once it gets moving, it makes big moves. The technicals show it's at a critical point for a breakout, so keep a close eye on this. If we see any news leak about positive iPhone 10 sales over the holiday season, expect this to go to ATH. Also ER is scheduled for Feb 1, so we will most likely see a run up soon enough.

    2. Nvidia (NVDA) - Solid company, and it had a rough couple of months after breaking the $200 level. Now we're back, and with CES around the corner, I suspect this will have a good move as well. Earnings again I believe is in Feb. If you look @ the technicals, you can see that it broke a key uptrend resistance level on STRONG volume - this is a very good sign for the stock as buyers have come back in and believe it should move higher. When Nvidia gets moving, we see it move A LOT, so this is a good one to watch this week.

    3. Square (SQ) - Recovering from ATH of $50 from couple months ago, Square is starting to make a comeback. We saw it bottom out around $34 or so (I personally wanted it to $30, but that's fine...) and now we see some movement upwards. Once again, we broke resistance on good volume, and now we bounced off support (and the 50 day) with STRONG volume. This is good confirmation that we are ready to start heading back to the ATH of $50 in this stock, but it may take a few weeks to get there. Friday had amazing movement, and overall I think we have a lot more room to move here. I personally picked up some LEAPs (Jan 2019 expiry, 50C) and they were fairly cheap. I don't think we'll have any problems seeing Square back at $50 before Jan 2019...

    4. Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) - They got a nice rally thanks to the news that came out from EA last week. Typically gaming stocks like to follow each others movement (EA, ATVI, TTWO), but I think technically, TTWO has the best charts and the best potential for a swing trade. If you look @ the charts, you can see that it broke through a key resistance level, on good volume, so we should be watching it closely next week to see if volume continues on with this. The stock has been beaten down since making new ATH a few months ago, although nothing fundamentally changed, so I think we'll see a good move up in the upcoming weeks as long as the market keeps moving up.

    5. Walmart (WMT) - This is a new stock I've never covered on my 5 stocks weekly videos, but the consolidation on this caught my attention. I have a position in them, longer dated calls, because I do believe we are just waiting for a Catalyst to gap up and move higher. This is the first time the stock closed above $100, which is typically a big resistance point for a stock to get past. It has consolidated around here since its last ER, and this move up was expected. Now as long as volume comes in, we could see this at $105-$110 before the next ER. If we see news come out that they had a record holiday season or something like this, I expect it to gap up and start a good rally. Walmart is a slow mover though, so it may take a few weeks to see movement here, but keep an eye on it!

So that covers the 5 stocks for this week. As always, please comment below to share what stocks you're watching this week, what you think about these 5 stocks that I covered, and how you did with your picks from the previous week.

    Happy investing!

    How to handle growth?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 10:55 PM PST

So, I've got a small collection stocks and somehow I wound up doing okay. I've got around 2k in one app (currently +24%) and 3k in another popular app (presently +46%).

Being new to stocks, I basically assume that holding for the long term is best, but I realize I'm new to this, so maybe that is not wise.

How do you handle growth in your portfolio? Do you withdraw to enjoy/realize gains, or leave it wherever it was originally placed, redistribute to diversify, or is there some other logic to consider?

I am not savvy with lingo, so if there is something that has buzzwords, help me out by explaining like I'm 5.

Am I asking the right question(s) in the right place?

    Thanks in advance.

Moved to NY and want to trade professionally. Need advice.

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:31 AM PST

I'm needing some advice on breaking into an equity trading role. I recently left my job, moved to NY and have been day trading equities fulltime. I thoroughly enjoy trading and would like to hone my skills and expand my breadth of knowledge by working with other traders. Is my best bet to join a prop firm? The two popular ones seem to be T3 Trading and SMB Capital. I'm ambivalent about putting up my own capital to trade for a firm, but I also understand that they wouldn't want to risk their capital on a random person. I'm someone who comes from a background that has nothing to do with the financial industry.

Does anyone have first hand experience with this? Is my best bet the prop firm route or are there other options I'm not aware of?

    Thanks in advance.

Help Wrapping My Brain Around The Discount Dividend Model (DDM) + Gordon's Equation

As in the the title - I'm listening to chapter 2 of "Four Pillars of Investing" and the author's explanation of these two concepts, plus how their applied/examples of how they are useful aren't sticking in my brain. Any videos or supplementary material someone could point me to would be very much appreciated.

    $GDOT, $PYPL, $SQ, or $V

    Posted: 07 Jan 2018 08:29 AM PST

Anyone else invested in $GDOT? I am in 40 shares @ $38.77 and I don't see this slowing down anytime soon. With that being said tho, I'd love to diversify as much as possible and I have been keeping an eye on Visa, Square, and PayPal also. (Recently cashed out on square and thinking about jumping back in). I have $3,400 in cash and I am leaning more towards $SQ at the moment........ Thoughts?

Big Companies Using Blockchain in 2018

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:05 PM PST

These stocks, in my opinion, are solid companies that are delving into the blockchain for 2018 and beyond. These are NOT penny stocks whose entire company is based on blockchain. If you are a visual learner, you can watch the video here

    1. Broadridge Financial Solutions (BR)

    • Broadridge provides investor communications and other solutions to the financial sector. They are one of the pioneers in this industry.
    • Broadridge is a standing out in the blockchain trend bc they've already completing a successful pilot test of a blockchain-based technology in collaboration with two large European banks in October.
    • The company partnered with JPMorgan in 2016 to successfully test its technology with shareholder proxy voting to make it easier and more transparent. Considering BR was already the largest U.S. provider of proxy voting services, it made sense for it to step in here.

    2. MasterCard (MA)

    • Mastercard announced that it is now opening up its blockchain to certain banks and merchants as an alternative and potentially more efficient method of paying for goods and services.
    • They are targeting cross-border payments between businesses as the primary purpose for its blockchain, which can only be used by invitation.
    • Mastercard's blockchain operates independently and instead accepts payments in traditional local money which is seen by some as a positive.

    3. Microsoft (MSFT)

    • Microsoft is committed to bringing blockchain to the enterprise and they are working with customers, partners, and the blockchain community to continue advancing its enterprise readiness through it's COCO Framework
    • Coco will be compatible, by design, with any ledger protocol and can operate in the cloud and on premises
    • By design, Coco is open and compatible with any blockchain protocol. Microsoft has already begun integrating E
    • Microsoft's intent is to contribute the source code to the dev community in early 2018

    4. Visa (V)

    • Visa has rolled out the first, pilot phase of its blockchain-based business-to-business payments service, B2B Connect.
    • Similar to MasterCard, Visa plans to use the platform to ease cross-border payments by facilitating direct payments between institutions, cutting out the middleman the industry currently relies on.
    • Visa's global head of solutions, Kevin Phalen, said that the banks are trialing live bank-to-bank transactions over the platform. Following this first phase of the project, phase two will see the project move to a commercial launch, slated to occur in the middle of 2018

    5. Cisco Systems (CSCO)

    • Cisco is one of the 200 organizations that are a part of the Enterprise E Alliance. These are governments and companies from all over the world, and multiple industries, testing out a version of E's blockchain
    • Cisco is also working to craft its own blockchain systems. In October, the company filed for the trademark of a blockchain platform that can identify different connected devices, monitor the activity of those devices, and evaluate how trustworthy those devices are when connected to a network.
    • It would also continually and automatically assess new devices when added to the network. In other words, Cisco believes it has a game-changing blockchain to track the Internet of Things.

    LTEA becomes LBCC. Down 20%?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 08:57 PM PST

So I might just be an idiot but I see nothing significant that happened to Long Blockchain Corp (previously Long Island Iced Tea Corp) on friday other than the symbol change from LTEA to LBCC, yet the stock went down 21.13%.

Is this just because people get nervous and bail with a name change, is it because people are realizing blockchain stocks are overpriced or did I miss something.

Thoughts on investing in Indian stocks?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:53 PM PST

I've been hearing some buzz around India being the next country to see massive economic growth. I've been hearing some form of this for a decade and half, adjacent to similar talk about China, which unlike India, has actually walked the walk. Having worked across Asia, I know that India is arguably the most corrupt large nation in which to do business, so I have generally had even less faith in Indian companies to actually do anything above board. However, if there is a buck to be made via the equity market, I might change my tune. I started investing heavily in Chinese companies last year and have made a killing. Now wondering if maybe India is a new opportunity.

Has anyone on this subreddit had any experience investing via ADRs, ETF's or funds in Indian businesses/sectors? If so, which ones? Are they as erratic in their stability as some Chinese stocks?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
