(Michigan) Letting somebody use your address for mail

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 06:10 PM PST

My sister in law is currently homeless and has asked that she use her dad's address to pick up her mail. When I mentioned this to my dad he said "Oh no no I've been through that mess before!" He told me that he let his girlfriend's son use their address to pick up mail because he was between jobs and got evicted. Some time later he got a bill in the mail from his car insurance stating they'd added this kid to his policy because he didn't have insurance of his own.

Is this an actual thing my father in law needs to worry about? I know my sister in law does not have car insurance and don't want to end up with him getting a big bill in the mail.

How Actual Cash Value works in collision claim when already have hail damage claim not repaired?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:29 AM PST

I own a 7 year old car in very good condition and after the hail storm damage in May in Colorado we got hail repair estimate and then I received a check from our insurance company (low in my opinion) but the car is not fixed yet (selected shops still too busy and I decided to wait). About a week ago my 25yo daughter was driving this car with my permission and got hit on a highway into the passenger side back door (most damage) and front door area by a 19yo uninsured female driver. I have $1000 collision deductible full coverage on Actual Cash Value (still struggling to understand the meaning of ACV). Three different estimates came out about $4K (may be more since the back door is stuck and has not been opened yet). Should I expect $4K less $1K deductible for the collision claim or will I get even less because of ACV and not yet repaired hail damage? While getting the estimate on the door repair at a shop of our insurance network (asking for an estimate as cash customers without a claim yet) we were told that with our hail damage the car should be totaled and the final assessment could be done only when we bring the car for hail damage repair or both repairs.

(California) Minor car accident, guy wants to pay out of pocket?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 05:21 PM PST

Hi all, I got into a minor car accident this morning. I was stopped on the on ramp due to a lot of traffic when I was suddenly rear ended. We pulled over to the side to assess damages when the guy at fault asked me not to contact my insurance and that he would pay out of pocket after I got an estimate for the damages. We parted ways after I insisted I still get his insurance information just in case. After a few hours, I noticed stiffness and light pain in my neck area going down to my right shoulder. It's been about 8+ hours since the accident and the pain is traveling down to the right side of my arm.

I texted (his preference) the guy the estimate (around $1000 for anybody curious) and let him know that I was feeling stiff and sore and that I may need chiropractic services which according to my chiropractor BIL will be anywhere from $1500 to $2000. He has yet to respond.

Is it better for me to go through insurance now that I might have an injury? Also, do I have to let the other guy know that I may/will file a claim?

Edit: Just out of curiosity, what could go wrong if I didn't file a claim and went the out of pocket route?

(WV/VA) How do I get a loss of coverage letter?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 02:22 AM PST

I recently decided not to continue with college and lost my health insurance through the school (Aetna, WV). To be put back on my mothers health insurance(Kaiser Permanente, VA), they said I need to get a loss of coverage letter from my other provider.

I can't login to Aetna online anymore since I'm not a member and I haven't found anything online to help. If anyone could let me know how to go about this I would be very grateful.

Speeding ticket - worth hiring an attorney?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 05:32 PM PST

Located in Norcross, GA, if that matters.

I was ticketed for driving 63 in a 45. Is it worth it, insurance rate wise, to try to get the ticket reduced to under 15 MPH over the speed limit? I spoke with a few attorneys about getting it reduced to -15 (non moving violation) and got conflicting information.

Will both types up my monthly cost at the same rate? Or will the increase be the same regardless of whether it is under 15 over the limit or 15+ over the limit?

Edit; My insurance is with State Farm.

How can I fix a possible fraud from my father with the same name?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:19 AM PST

To try can keep this short, my father and I have the same First and Last name, but different middle names. He never puts his middle name, I ALWAYS put my middle name to avoid confusion.

This being said, I went to get renters insurance for my apartment while we are looking for a house and my policy provider told me there is a loss of $350,000 from Liberty Mutual in my name from a house fire that belonged to my father. I called to verify and the social, DOB, and name (Missing the middle name) were all mine. Several checks were issued in my name, but they couldnt give me which bank the check were cashed and I guessing my father put it in his bank account.

Now Im at a total loss what to do. Like I stated before, we are looking to buy a house within the next year, and my insurance rates will be sky high with a claim like this under MY social and DOB.

So, Liberty has given me a letter to give to whoever I look into for a policy, but I feel like Ive been done wrong by only given this letter. This is not my claim, why is it going to remain under my name?

Point of the post: 1) Does this stuff affect the home buying process with mortgages and loans? 2) Is it possible for a parent to open an insurance policy in a childs name without permission for a house they didn't live in? 3) Any tips on getting any policy information from Liberty Mutual to help my case? 4) Is it possible to sue Liberty Mutual for allowing this policy to be taken in my name? 5) Any advice. Im literally shaking in anxiety at the moment and I cant think straight.

    Thanks, MB

Car insurance: Wife on my insurance AND her parents?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:19 PM PST

Hey, I just got married and I'm trying to figure out how my car insurance should be handled and, more specifically, if the current configuration is going to cause problems.

We have one vehicle which is insured through my Geico policy. My wife has been listed as an inactive driver on my policy because we didn't live together and she was on her parents policy; however, now that we're married, Geico said she must me added as an active driver, giving her full coverage on my plan. I'm fine with that and have made that change. However, her parents don't want to remove her from their plan because it will cause their rate to go up (they called their insurance company to see if that was a mistake and it wasn't. Removing her will increase the cost). They would like to keep her listed as an active driver on their policy as well.

Obviously we can't submit a claim to both companies if there is an accident, but are there any problems with being listed on two policies at the same time (different companies)?

[CA] Car insurance company of driver who hit me is jerking me around

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:47 PM PST

Crossposted at legal advice, but a search led me to this subreddit. I thought maybe someone on here might have some answers for me.

Somebody rear ended me just before Christmas. I've been dealing with their insurance directly and they've been extremely difficult to deal with. Firstly, no one returned my calls between Christmas and New Year's. I'm not sure if everyone was on vacation or what, but the car rental company called me on the first of the year saying that the insurance company had only approved it until the first.

So, I called them and when I finally got in touch with someone, they told me that they wouldn't approve an extension on the rental until I took my garage to a shop. The only correspondence I received from them up to that point said the incident was still under investigation. I didn't want to just assume the investigation would come out in my favor (even though it was pretty cut and dry their driver's fault) and be on the hook for the repairs. So, I took the car into a shop that day to get the rental car extension.

During this call, the person I spoke to made several unprofessional remarks. Something to the effect of "oh, don't expect us to cut you a check for the car, we're going to repair it." It struck me as them accusing me of trying to gouge them, but I honestly just wanted it resolved at this point. I also figured I'd ask about the car seat in my vehicle and whether I needed to leave it in the car while it was in the shop.

The person I spoke to immediately got super defensive about the car seat, stating it only needed to be replaced if the child was in the car during the accident. That wasn't what I asked... and I'd been planning to replace it anyway since it had been in an accident. But just the way the company had been acting up until this point made me suspect that maybe the company needed to reimburse me for the car seat.

I have a relative who is an insurance agent for a different company to ask her about the car seat. She informed me that the car seat having been in an accident voids the manufacturer's warranty and safety road standards whether or not the child was in the car seat. And that it was the company's responsibility to replace it because it's their duty to get me back to where I was before the accident.

So, at that point, it established to me that the company was being less than honest with me about things in general. Now, the newest issue is that after the car was evaluated by the car shop, it was determined to be a total loss. So, they're going to cut me a check (yeah, just like they said they weren't going to). But, like everything else, they took so long deciding what they were going to do, the shop I took the car too is charging a $1200 storage fee.

The insurance company is telling me I need to pay that fee and that they'll reimburse me because I chose the shop. I mean, yeah, I took it to a shop because they weren't going to pay for my rental unless it was in a shop. Apparently if I had taken it to their approved shop (which I never received any information about), they would have paid the storage fee directly.

Because this company hasn't been on the up and up with me about anything, I'm concerned that if I go down there and pay this fee, they're going to attempt to reimburse me the rate it would've been at their shop and expect me to cover the difference (~$130/day) or some other weird thing. My game plan for tomorrow is to request in writing that they will give me a full refund for this fee and to bring up the car seat issue and see where that goes.

At this point, I'm considering seeking representation or just getting this information verified by someone familiar with the law. My relative who works for another company suggest I have my company handle it, but apparently since I already starting dealing with the other driver's company directly, my company can't do that because of their policy. So, I'm not sure where to look. When I do a search, I'm referred to car accident attorneys and I'm not certain that it's the same thing. I'm not trying to sue the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident or anything like that. Or do insurance agents do this type of thing? Any advice would be helpful.

    Accident due to weather conditions

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:26 PM PST

I had an accident last night due to sliding on black ice. I was on the on-ramp speeding up for getting on the highway. I hit the black ice, and lost control of my truck. As I was trying to regain the control, I slid even more and jumped over a snow bank onto the highway sideways. I got t-boned by a vehicle on the rear side. I also hit the barriers.

The state trooper said he was going easy on me due to weather conditions. Otherwise this would have been counted as reckless driving. He gave me a citation for unsafe lane change, but have me at fault %100. So my insurance is responsible for both my and the other party's vehicle as well as other costs involved.

Should contest this ticket? Should I be considered at fault? Will my insurance go up drastically because I am considered at fault? What are my options since this was caused by ice?

Denied life insurance due to elevated liver function

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 10:28 PM PST

I had my paramedical exam a few weeks ago and today I received a letter denying my coverage through my employer's supplemental life insurance plan.

I am making an appointment with my doctor to get things checked out, so, depending on the outcome of these tests, I may be able to appeal the decision... any ideas as to how best to proceed in that process?

Otherwise, assuming the doctor's tests confirm the elevated liver function, what are my next steps? I know that I can look at other providers as they all have different underwriting procedures. But, if the elevated function is due to lifestyle factors, will I be able to reapply after getting my health back into line? I'd like to qualify through my employer to take advantage of the subsidized premiums if at all possible.

I'm being billed for a medical visit that insurance won't cover. I feel that I'm not responsible for it. What can I do?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 09:49 PM PST

I originally posted this to /r/legaladvice and they recommended this sub. For reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/7ploey/im_being_billed_for_a_medical_visit_that/

TLDR: New Hampshire, USA. I went to an Urgent Care which is legally considered an outpatient hospital. Because of the billing mix up, my insurance won't cover the charges. What can I do to get out of a $900 bill?

The details: I live in New Hampshire, USA. In October 2016, I got a tick bite and noticed a pretty quick reaction. I decided that I wanted treatment for it just to be safe. I didn't think an ER visit was necessary so I opted for a local Urgent Care facility instead. I was there for 20 minutes, got a blood test and prescription, and left without a problem.

Several weeks later, I got a bill for about $250. I thought it was pretty high for a simple tick bite that was covered by insurance but I paid it anyway without really looking into the details. Clearly a mistake on my part but I just wanted to move past it. A few weeks after that I got another bill. This one for nearly $900! I didn't have a clue what it could be for so I immediately started looking into the details. After several phone calls, I learned that the first bill was the doctor's charge and the second bill was the facility charge. More importantly, my insurance wasn't covering any of it. I paid the first bill entirely out of pocket.

After many months of occasional calls with the Urgent Care and my insurance company, I learned several things. Firstly, my insurance company refused to pay the bill because my PCP refused to sign the referral. Secondly, I verified that my insurance doesn't require referrals for Urgent Care visits but does require them for Specialist visits. So if a referral isn't required, then why was my insurance company not paying the bill? Thirdly, I eventually learned that the Urgent Care can't legally bill as an Urgent Care. It's technically considered an outpatient hospital and must bill insurance companies as if they are a specialist. I finally had an explanation. Because the Urgent Care has to bill as a specialist, my insurance company required a referral which my PCP refused to authorize. Therefore, I'm stuck with the bill.

A side note: Why did my PCP refuse to give me a referral? I chose my current PCP several years ago and never actually saw her. Basically, I moved out of the area and never selected a new one. Yes, I'm fully aware of how dumb, etc. this is and I plan to fix it. The important thing is that my PCP has a perfectly valid reason to not give me a referral. Ultimately, I was aware of this problem and chose to use medical services that don't require referrals.

As far as I'm concerned, I was lied to by the Urgent Care about the services they offer. Because of that lie, the same business is demanding that I pay a total of $1200. I stupidly paid a portion of that already but refuse to pay another dime. I've explained the situation to the Urgent Care but they won't budge. The bill has gone to collections but I'm still not paying. Lastly, I'd like to point out that the business advertises themselves as being an Urgent Care. They advertise locally as such and have it listed on the building. Their website also very clearly says Urgent Care in many places.

How do I get out of this situation? How do I stop them from sending me bills? If I do nothing, what should I expect to happen?

[CA] I was encouraged to use permissible driver option?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 02:59 PM PST

I don't fully understand what this option does. I know some of the pros but it feels like it would have a huge down side as well. I would appreciate some insights. Thank you.

    edit for clarity:

I'm trying to get my parents, me, and my younger brother insured (we all live together). My younger brother has bad record, which obviously raises the overall premium. The insurance agent then recommended and gave me an option to put him as a permissible driver.

My parked car was hit. Somewhat severe bumper damage. Lady who hit it was driving a U-Haul and she didn't opt in for the insurance. She wants me to agree to say she was driving her personal car.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 08:44 PM PST

Not sure if any of that matters anyway. U-HAUL insurance just covers damage to the truck anyway right?

Would her personal auto insurance normally cover damage CAUSED by he r driving the U-Haul?

Should I go along with the lie? I mean for all i could have known is that I had a note on my car with her insurance info and I didn't see who was driving what.

But I did see, and she was driving a U-Haul.

Or is all this moot and I just give my insurance company her info and let them take care of it?

    Thanks!!!

Advice about dealing with someone leaving a note after hitting my motorcycle

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 11:11 AM PST

    Hi,

I came home last night to find that someone had backed into my parked motorcycle, causing it to tip over. The guy left a note with his phone number, and I called him. On the phone he refused to give me his email address, and insisted I let him know when I've compiled a list of the damages, and that he'd cover the cost (he didn't want to go through insurance). He wants me to meet him in person to give him the paper list. I don't feel like I have much leverage here, since there are no witnesses to the accident..

I've had this happen before, and the person covered the cost of new parts, so I'm not bothered by this method, however..

I've done a quick lookover, and based on that alone, replacing the parts will cost more than $1,300 ($850 because they dented my fuel tank). Additionally, I can tell that the front alignment of the bike is off, which could require anything from a quick adjustment, to serious work...I'll be visiting my mechanic tomorrow to see about this.

I highly doubt the guy who hit it is expecting such a high cost, and I am worried about him refusing to pay. But I don't really have and evidence of his being at fault (aside from his note). I don't want to piss him off by being pushy, and have him just disappear either...

    I have a couple questions.

    1. I have comprehensive progressive motorcycle insurance (they covered everything when my bike was stolen and recovered). If the guy refuses to pay to replace all damaged parts, is my best bet to file a hit-and-run claim? Will this be covered? Will I have to pay more than the deductible? Will my rates go up?

    2. If he refuses to pay, are his note and evidence of our phone call of any use to me (in terms of putting him at fault)? I plan on texting him when I've compiled my list of damages, so there will be that too..

    3. Should I just ask him to pay my insurance deductible (If Question 1 gives me good news)?

I realize there are a lot of 'if he refuses,' but I want to be prepared in case this happens.

New Car totaled, which insurance do I go through?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:48 PM PST

Accident occurred in NY, car is registered in Ohio

I was driving my parent's car, 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander that was bought brand new 7 month ago (May 2017). The other party was driving on the opposite direction and did a illegal turn across a solid road line to pull into a gas station. It is his fault. My car is pretty much totaled, 2 air bags went off and the front is pretty smashed.

I have Geico for my insurance, the other guy has A. National which I have never heard of.

Which insurance should I go through? I know going through my insurance is faster and easier but I am not sure if I am going to get the most money back. Any tips will be helpful. Thanks

Can I cancel a fraudulent claim and start a new truthful one?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:47 PM PST

So New Year's Eve we got Snow and car rolled down our driveway and into our mailbox. The front bumper and the headlight was messed up but nothing extremely serious. I had this wonderful idea to change our deductible to 250 instead of 1000 and wait a week and file a claim. I've felt bad about it since but can't take it back now. On top of this since I had changed the policy we were marked for fraud and the siu guy I spoke to believed me and said he would meet with me and check things out. I ended up cancelling the claim. I don't want to deal with fraud. The question is can I go and file a new one and say the true date the accident happened?

This is a car I purchased so the title is in my name so insurance companies are asking for 6-7x what i was charged for being on my parents insurance. Anyone know why this is or somewhere to look for a cheaper quote? no accidents/tickets/points/violations etc. In Michigan if that matters

Is there anything I can do?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 06:10 PM PST

Uncle recently passed due to surgery complications. We all thought he was covered by life insurance but it turns out it was only accidental life insurance the whole time.

Now, my uncle had severe problems mentally as he could not remember what medications he had to take, when were his doctor appointments, or when to take his medications.

My mother and I actually went to his house to set up his weekly pill organizer for him to use.

Sometimes when we checked on him midweek it was messed up and we had to organize it all over again.

His wife too was handicapped in a wheel chair and and has mental problems too, and so she was incapable of the responsibility to organize his pills.

The sons did not care and are drug addicts and so that's why we stepped in to help.

I feel like the person that sold the insurance took advantage of his situation and incapabilities to comprehend to successfully sell him it.

Is there any legal action I can take? They are already in debt and this loss just makes things worse for them.

All my family is now putting money in to cover the funeral expenses.

Thank you all! I'm in NY btw.

TL;DR Now deceased handicapped uncle had accidental life insurance the whole time. Any legal actions I can take?

What do I do if I totaled my car?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 05:13 PM PST

So, last night I totaled my car. Or, it appears that I totaled my car. I called my insurance and they said that they would send an insurance adjuster to the impound lot my car was towed to to evaluate the damage on my vehicle. I know absolutely nothing about how this works as it is the first vehicle that I have totaled. Or that I think has been totaled. Are there any tips or tricks that I need to know when approaching my insurance company that I need to know of? I have already set up a scheduled meeting to pick up a rental in the meantime. Thank you for any help you can give me!

Borrowed vehicle was crashed and not sure how to proceed

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 04:29 PM PST

So my dad isn't in great financial shape and today things just got worse. He has a truck he bought a couple of years ago. It's a 2003 and nothing fancy and would estimate the value to be around $5,000. His brother had to have his own truck worked on so my dad let him borrow his truck to get to work. This morning at 3:00 am, as my uncle was going through an intersection, someone else ran a red light and my uncle T-Boned her in my dad's truck. My dad only had PLPD insurance on the truck. Since this happened at 3:00 am, there was no one else on the road so there are no witnesses to this crash and I don't know how either party can prove the fault of this accident. The other driver went to the hospital so I don't believe my uncle had much if any conversation with her. What is going to happen now? Is there anything I or my dad needs to do to try and get the other driver's insurance to cover this? He isn't in a position to buy another truck. Any help is much appreciated.

Need advice on how to keep my prescriptions and appointments private from my parents’ insurance?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 12:39 PM PST

Hello, this is my first time posting on this sub (hopefully this is the best place for this type of post) and I'm in need of some advice. I'm currently 23 years old and I am lucky enough to still be on my parent's insurance at the time. To spare everyone the boring details, I have an appointment soon at a facility that I would rather my parents remain unaware about due to conflicting points of view on certain practices and medications - this will most likely also lead to me getting some prescriptions that I am equally uncomfortable with them knowing about.

I'm unsure of what the best course of action is regarding situations like this. On one hand, I'm extremely grateful that I'm able to be on my parents insurance plan, but on the other I would greatly like to avoid the conversations and possible repercussions that would result from me going to the sort of appointment that I plan to. So my question is - is there anyway to withhold the information from my visits and prescriptions from my parents? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I really don't have any experience with this sort of situation. I'm almost tempted to pay for the whole thing out of pocket, but doing so would basically deplete my savings so I'd prefer if I could get insurance to cover it.

    Thanks in advance!

Question for lawyers/adjusters - my car was lost because another caught fire, options?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 07:37 AM PST

So last spring in my apartment parking garage, I was awoken by a call from the country fire marshall notifying me that my car suffered fire damage. When i went to check it out, the car I was parked beside, a Toyota Rav4, caught fire and took mine with it. When I filed the claim with USAA, My insurance provider, they stuck me with the costs and refused to pursue the other car owner because he was a diplomat and had diplomat plates...

Basically my questions are: - How can I get the diplomat's insurance to reimburse me? I filed a FOIA and have the info on the Rav4 owner. - Can i file a lawsuit with Toyota? The cause of the file according to the fire marshall's report was "manufacturer defect" - Can I go after the apartment complex? They claim they have nothing to do with it even though it happened in their facility, which did NOT have any fire suppression systems. They didn't bother to let residents know a fire happened, to include me who was a victim of it. - is any of this even worth pursuing legally? I don't want to end up paying a lawyer more them I'm gonna be getting out of this

Any advise or guidance is welcome. Thanks!

*edit - In regards to being"stuck with the costs," I probably could have worded that better - I did have coverage on my vehicle, so it would be more accurate to say the pay off to my lein holder was covered by MY policy as opposed to the other car owner's policy. I didn't mean to imply it was out of pocket for me.

Questions regarding simplified issue policies, guaranteed universal life.

Hey everyone, I was approached a few months ago about becoming a life insurance agent. The money sounded good so I've been looking into it, got my license, and have been contracted to sell through several carriers.

Since I jumped in quickly, I wasn't fully aware of what I was doing, but now that I have a decent grasp of what's going on, I'd like to address some concerns. Firstly, the company I work for is focusing on selling simplified issue whole life insurance policies. The original strategy I was told was to focus on seniors with health problems who think that they either don't qualify or think they have limited options. I'm coming to realize that this may not always be the case and to not be aware of the general purchasing strategies of other types of customers could be doing people a huge disservice.

Question 1: I'm getting conflicting messages about the underwriting standards for simplified issue term life and simplified issue whole life. The claim from my manager is that simplified issue term life has stricter underwriting so it is easier to place someone in simplified issue whole life. I've heard from other sources that the underwriting for term and whole is generally the same. Does anyone on here actually have the qualifications to clearly claim if underwriting for simplified term versus simplified whole is a real concern(not guaranteed issue, I understand what is happening with guaranteed issue)? It seems as though when I ask this question I generally get biased answers (term agents have their pitches, whole agents have their pitches).

Question 2: As a general rule of thumb, wouldn't it be better service to approach each new client with the mindset that they might qualify for fully underwritten insurance and to make them fully aware that even though they may have some health problems, certain carriers could qualify them with a fully underwritten policy, leading to a better price and coverage? It seems as though to me that if you only focus on simplified coverage you would be tempted to not mention that other fully underwritten policies are available.

Question 3: For the average customer, I could see them wanting the price of term insurance but the peace of mind that permanent policies provide. In my research I came across guaranteed universal policies. They are products that can be set to certain ages (85, 90, 95, 100, 121), which could essentially function like a permanent policy, but without the cash value (I believe the cash value is available but you just don't fund it, keeping it at zero, so all your premium can go towards coverage). Is there any difference in the underwriting for these policies and would it be possible to get a simplified issue guaranteed universal policy?

Question 4: If there are any significant differences among underwritings of simplified issue term life, simplified issue whole life, and guaranteed universal (simplified or not), how would I know as an agent where to make the cutoff decisions for putting them in one or the other?

    Thanks!
