Questions about events that were big news and now have receded into the background. Example: Is the Greek debt crisis mostly resolved or did we just brush it off?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 01:21 PM PST

As the title states, I'm curious as to the state of some major items from the past years prior to Trump seem to have faded from the radar. I'm wondering if anyone has any information on the state of things such as:

    • Chinese shadow banking

    • The PIIGS debt crises

    • Oil Supply Glut

Looking forward to the discussion! Cheers.

Canadian housing market starts to fall. another bubble bursting coming?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:00 AM PST

While everyone is being blinded by cryptocurrency. something is happening now in housing market. according to UBS Global Real Estate Bubble Index canada has been said as most risky country for current housing bubble cycle. and now it started to fall from Sep. it's first quarterly decline after the subprime crisis. their price level is at skyhigh and their debt level have soared up unlike US. it's more than the GDP now. seems their construction share to GDP isn't sustainable level. even more their central bank rate is still 0.5% lower than US which might lead to currency weakening. i've gathered some facts. so any thoughts on it?

GBTC just announced a 91 for 1 stock split

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:29 PM PST

GBTC will split shares so that for every one held, 90 will be received, for holders on the record date of January 22nd. Rather than a single share being worth ~$1700-$2500, it would now be closer to the $18-$27 range.

I have had only a small handful of my stocks split before, but usually it is on a scale of 2 for 1. Any observations on what tends to happen when a stock splits? Is a stock split generally regarded as a good or a bad thing, or just an regular adjustment when the price of something is beyond what most are willing to pay?

Any predictions on what this will do to the premium? Turnover of shares? Overall price point once the dust has settled?

    Advice for a begginer?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 07:19 PM PST

So I'm sure this has been covered here at some point. I'm a 28 y.o. male, A.D. military and don't have too much to invest with at the moment, about 2k I'm comfortable with. I feel as if I've done a decent amount of begginers research over the past few weeks, but still am nervous about how to start. I'm looking to build over the long term but still feel a little clueless on where to start and how to get that initial toe in the water. Any ones time and advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

How would the US pulling out of NAFTA affect stocks?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 03:23 PM PST

    https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/10/canada-is-increasingly-convinced-that-trump-will-pull-the-us-out-of-nafta-reuters-citing-sources.html

This article is saying that it is likely the US will pull out of NAFTA. Regardless of the validity of the article, what would be the effect (and magnitude of said effect) to the stock market for this? Have we had a similar event in history occur before?

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 04:05 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

Is the stock market rise a sign of inflation?

Do companies that sell products/services that tend to have inelastic demand curves tend to beat the market on average?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:30 PM PST

How do we even figure out if the demand for a company's product or service is inelastic? We know cigarettes ($MO, $PM) are, but is coffee ($SBUX, $DNKN), for example? What about Apple products/services? Netflix?

Does it even matter? Do these companies tend to outperform peers/the market?

    Portfolio Performance Tracking

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:35 PM PST

    Here's the situation:

I've got over $10k in Vanguard mutual funds. My first purchase of the funds was $10k, and I've been putting in another $1k each month.

I also have an employer match program through principal.com

Basically what a want is a portfolio tracker that shows how much I've made total and how much I've made on the life of each purchase. Right now I can see I've made 'x' amount of money on all of my purchases, but I'd like to see how well the 10k I invested has done individually, or the 1k I invested after that.

I've done a bit of searching but I can't seem to find software that lets me see the performance of each purchase I've made. Any suggestions?

Local or foreign markets for weed stocks?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:56 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm a 20 yo guy from Germany. I'm new to reddit and new to investment. Considering the weed stock boom that is going on in Canada rn I wanted to ask if someone can help me with a question? Would you advise on buying those stocks at a local market (TSX) or to buy it at a stock exchange in Germany (FSE)? Are there any significant differences? Thanks in advance!

Roth IRA - Mutual or ETF Style?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:09 PM PST

    Good day,

I have a few accounts with Fidelity, but I am mainly concerned with my Roth IRA. Currently, my vehicle consists of only VTI (60%), VXUS (30%), and a small amount of VB (10%) equities. Is there a best practice in regards to investing into a Roth IRA (i.e., should one choose mutual funds over ETFs in a Roth IRA? If so, should I be looking at VTSAX and VTIAX?) I ask this because although the VTI returns are tremendous (more small cap exposure in comparison to how other investments are structured), I am aware that there can be a hundred bucks in change or so my Roth IRA not being utilized, and that is time out of the market. So ultimately, I am in a bit of a conundrum. If there are other ways I can be smarter, even if it is marginal, I would appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me.

    Thank you for your time.

How will the EU's tax grab affect the financial statements of AAPL in the coming quarter?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 12:42 AM PST

I am super bullish on AAPL this quarter. I think there's a lot of noise and fake news around iPhone X demand, the projections Apple made are very conservative, and I think even the analysts are giving lowball estimates. This creates a very attractive buying opportunity imo. The only concern I have that no one seems to be talking about is the effect of the 13B euro transfer to an escrow account affect Apple's financial statements this quarter? Although they said they were confident they could fight it, I remember in Alphabet's Q2, the EU fine totally eclipsed their otherwise great quarter. Can someone explain how it may affect the income statement, balance sheet, and cash flows according to GAAP?

    Investment advice

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 12:40 AM PST

Hello Reddit. I'm looking for some beginning investment advice.

Age 27, finance and accounting professional making 80k/yr. Currently in beginning stages of my career (4 years). No major debts like student loans, only $9k very low interest car loan I pulled to build credit line over time with zero credit card debt (paid in full monthly). Maxing 401k (Fidelity) with employer matching contributions. I have $25k in savings sitting in a low interest savings account.

Currently net around $1800/month after all monthly expenses in disposable income i want to start investing to hopefully save for a house around my mid 30s. I deposit around $1300 a month into savings and anything left over. I know the basics of investing but with the market being so high right now I just don't know of there is a right or wrong time to start investing. I just listen to Warren Buffet and John C Bogle and willing to sit on my goose egg for many many years.

To start i was thinking of just starting basic and putting $10k into TSM and SPY then contributing every month to those and maybe branch and diversify into more risky individual stocks since I'm still young. I'll leave $15k for emergency fund.

Any advice to start would be much appreciated. Thanks!

    Investing while studying?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2018 12:34 AM PST

I am in my mid 20's and halfway through an accounting degree, but as my goal is to work investing in some form I'm often worried that I need to spend every moment I'm not studying my degree researching and learning to invest. Any time I'm not researching/reading I feel guilty, but since I'm learning things take a long time to get my head around and I simply just need more knowledge to build up before I can take things deeper.

I usually spend a couple of hours each day learning (on holidays), but since it's required to spend enormous hours to choose an investment (at a professional stage) I'm concerned I'm not doing enough in these early days.

I would really appreciate advice about these feelings and how much time, realistically, should I spend researching/reading while I study - for example, should I just keep doing bits and pieces until I finish my degree, or is it necessary I put in considerably more time?

    How does this portfolio sound?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 03:17 PM PST

I have about 20-25k to spend on stock and I want to know how my diversification looks, as well as if I need to buy more of a specific sector. -IVV (tracks s&p 500) $4000 worth -MTUM (momentum etf) $3300 worth -IEMG (emerging markets etf) $1200 worth -Amazon $3800 worth -QQQ(tracks top 100 nasdaq companies etf) $2500 worth

Questions: A) My main fear right now is I don't have enough health care or energy, if you agree with this would you recommend sector etfs for both?

    B) How do you think health care and energy will play out in 2018-2019 and would getting sector etfs for those benefit this portfolio? If so, which ones?

    C) Do you think tech will outperform like it did last year so do you think I should be overweight in it like I am now?

    D) What do you think of Visa and UnitedHealth as potential additions to this portfolio

    Please and thank you.
