Crazy rate increase for no apparent reason (Los Angeles, CA - Progressive Automotive)

    Posted: 10 Jan 2018 03:48 AM PST

I recently received a renewal for the next 6 months. The amount due is almost exactly 20% higher than last 6 months. I chatted with Progressive support and they said they had to pass along some costs of increased insurance in California to customers. Is that true?

I looked up some history on that "normal" rate increase yearly, and it seems to only be a couple of percent each year, and just around 20% total since 2011. We are billed in 6 month policies.

Is this an error? Here are the only differences in the upcoming 6 month policy. - got married - one of us turned 25 (presumed that would mean less cost) - one add'l year of "years as experienced driver" for us - our cars are 6 months less new (obviously)

There are no claims on this account at all, and specifically no incidents during the last policy period. They sent a summary document online which shows "last policy period" vs "renewal policy" and there are no changes in the data besides us getting married and one more year of driver experience for both of us.

I do not believe Progressive when they say this is just a normal increase in CA. All rates discussed here are the pay-in-full amount (which we always pay) not the installments with fees. Has anyone else experienced this in 2018, or with Progressive? I'm not sure what to do besides cancel the policy and quote with someone else in short notice...

[WA,USA] Insurance gap due to selling car, effect on insurance premiums

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 08:44 PM PST

I'm planning on selling my car very soon (before end of this month), but my new car won't be delivered until March. The rush is because I want to minimize the probability of something happening to the car before I can sell it.

The question I have is the my insurance is set to renew on January 22nd (Auto pay already kicked and got charged because I forgot). If I were to sell the car, should I cancel my insurance and the subsequent renewal? Will this gap of around a month be counted against me when I reapply for an insurance in March? Should I just hold off selling the car for a while?

Car accident. Anyone familiar with a 50/50 settlement?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:36 PM PST

A paramedic SUV was supposedly backing up at the same time. I'm saying it's his fault. The other driver is probably saying it's mine too. I called my ins and they said it looks like it will be a 50/50 where the two party is both liable.

I can either A) Proceed and pay $1k deductible and try to get it back. Probably 50% per 50/50

    B) Go with their insurance but they will like only pay half of the cost of the damages.

If I call insurance B, does that automatically mean I'm going with them?

Are Highly Deductible Health Insurance Mostly Useless For Young Adults?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:04 PM PST

I'm relatively young 28 year old. My medical bills never come close to the $5,500 deductible before the benefit of insurance kicks in.

In fact I pay about 0$ each year while paying about 2500$ for insurance I never use. In fact, I've never had to pay a lot of money to see a doctor in my life. Certainly, never above $5,500. Generally I continue to hold on to the insurance because of anecdotal stories of how people can go into medical bankruptcy if they get into a pretty bad accident. Our private health care system is pretty broken.

Does anyone else find this to be the case? If so is there any other better alternatives?

    Afraid to appraise it...

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 01:50 PM PST

I have a shitty car with 225k miles. KBB says its worth $900. Got some side damage that ripped off a bumper, but there's very little 'metal' damage. Thing is I'm fairly certain with all the rust and expense of procuring a new bumper and painting they're gonna total the thing.

Now my car may be shitty, and it may have a Check Engine light with various EVAP/emissions issues, but it's been ridiculously reliable and is actually very mechanically well-maintained. I'm worried that if I get it appraised (and totaled) they're gonna either take my car and leave me with money that's not gonna be enough to buy a reliable car, or if I keep it, leave me with a salvage title car that the money (appraised value - salvage value) won't be enough to fix up these emission problems to get it to pass inspection.

The adjuster said that in my state anything over 75% of value is considered total loss. What should I do?

Update: Car is perfectly driveable as damage is all cosmetic. Am I better off just cancelling the claim?

    Permissive Use/Non Contact (Arizona)

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 08:17 PM PST

    Sister borrowed brothers car.

    Sister caused accident.

    Brother won't cooperate with insurance.

Insurance claims they will deny coverage due to non-contact (with brother).

    Sister has own insurance.

I am the victim and had to rent a car while I waited for brother to cooperate with insurance.

Will the sisters policy kick in and pay for vehicle damages and rental car that I needed while brothers insurance was trying to hear from him?

Is this a dirty tactic to use when someone borrows your car and gets into a wreck? Just don't comply and they simply drop the claim?!?!

What do I do with this check?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 12:29 PM PST

I was involved in an auto accident (not at fault) and, when they evaluated the damage to my car, GEICO wrote me a check that says it's in payment of "property damage coverage." I did not deposit the check. When I took my car to my preferred shop, they found that the damage was more extensive (ie not just cosmetic) and the expenses were much more than that covered by the check. The shop and GEICO worked out the expenses, and I did not pay anything to the shop when I got my car back from them.

What do I do with the check now?

Can you take back the story you said to your insurance?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 11:34 PM PST

Asking for my brother. My brother was involved in a hit and run. He rear ended a car at a red light and drove away. He was scared or nervous (no idea why he left because he was insured). A couple months later his insurance company contacted him and asked him about the crash, he said he wasn't the driver and his insurance denied the claim. Now a year and a half later, my entire family is getting calls from someone about a subrogation claim. Now my brother finally called them and they're saying pay the 8K or we're suing you/ getting your license suspended.

Now my question is.... can he call his insurance and admit he lied? That he was the driver? LOL. Pay the 8K and raise my rate? I don't know.... what are his options? Thank you!!!

[ME] Involved in a fender bender (not at fault) and have been presented with two options by my insurance of how to proceed. Need advice.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:03 PM PST

As stated in the title, the accident occurred in Maine this afternoon. I was rear-ended and determined to be not at fault. There appears to be considerable damage to the back end of my vehicle, though I have not yet had the damage appraised (by a shop or insurance representative).

My insurance provider, Geico, has provided me with two options for having the damage repaired. They are:

    1. Pay my $500 deductible. Geico will send funds to cover damage repair immediately. Geico will aggressively pursue at-fault-driver's insurance (Progressive) for repayment of damage repair funds including deductible.

    2. Contact Progressive on my own for damage repair funds.

My situation: I absolutely not even a little bit can afford or have access to $500. With a considerable amount of groveling, begging, etc., there is a very small chance I could borrow from family members of they were guaranteed to be repaid. I am leaning towards option two, but I'm scared Progressive will dick around and I won't be compensated fairly or even at all for the damage to my vehicle.

I would very much appreciate any advice or insight anyone could offer.

do i still pay my deductible even though driver was not at fault?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:05 PM PST

a few days ago my bf and i were on the left most lane on the freeway when the car to our right was signaling over. there was not any room in front of us so my bf honked seeing as though the driver was trying to squeeze in. the driver still managed to maneuver into the lane and hit the left side of my car so hard we both bounced back. the driver was probably in as much shock as i was so she kept driving for a bit.. weird. fast forward through me rolling down my passenger side window and cursing at the driver to pull over.

1 1/2 hours, a cop, and state patrol later.. a police report was finally filed.

2 hrs later i call my insurance company to file a claim. (mind you i have never done this bc im not sure how to fully adult yet but my father thinks its a great learning opportunity) ((im a 20 yr old)).

today my insurance agent called and informed me that i must pay the $1000 deductible and they will pay whatever goes beyond that for the repairs.

my question is do i have to pay since we were not at fault for the accident? what is the process of what i should do next? what are the chances that my insurance will increase? i am not familiar with insurance policies at all so any information would be helpful. thanks in advance.

[Utah] My car was backed into and damaged

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:11 AM PST

Hi r/insurance. Thank you for your time.

My car was damaged in a parking lot (no injuries-- the damage is purely cosmetic) and the owner accepted fault and her insurance company accepted liability.

They've directed me to some local body shops to get the fixes done, however I wanted ask if there's anything I should know before I pursue this further.

I have only 4 payments left on the loan, and the vehicle itself is a 2010 and has only 43,000 miles on it. I believe this damage (even if fixed) will reduce the value of the car significantly were I to trade it in. Is that correct? Is that taken into consideration?

Is there an option to just get a check for damages? or is the body work my only option?

    Thank you again.

WA, got into a car accident driving my gf's car

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:16 PM PST

Hey redditors got a car insurance question for yuh.

I typically carpool to work but needed to drive one day and since the gf's car gets a lot better gas mileage she let me drive hers.

Ended up rear ending someone on the way which I reported shortly after.

This happened in November and she has since had her car repaired through the insurance(paid the deductable) and returned to her last month.

Last week and this week she's been receiving phone calls from her insurance(State farm), after we thought this was done with, saying they want all of my insurance(usaa) information. She obviously doesn't have that on hand so hasn't provided it.

Today they(state farm) called again and told her if she doesn't give them my insurance (usaa) information they will add me to her insurance and raise her rates.

This doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to us seeing as how everything has been repaired and paid for already.

Are we under any obligation to provide them with my insurance information?

Can they force her to add me to her insurance?

    Gf: state farm, fully insured.
Me: usaa, fully insured on my own vehicle.
We do live together if that matters.

Tldr: rear ended someone while driving the gf's car in Nov. Car repaired and returned in Dec. Her insurance now calling her trying to get my insurance information last week and this week and saying they will add me to her insurance if they don't receive my info.

Happy to provide any further information if needed.

    Are bundled discounts BS?

I have been on Progressive for about 10 years now and I bundled bad with my home and auto. I'm going to start shopping around as I got a new car for better prices on my insurance. I believe that the bundle discounts are just marketing BS and that's how they try to get you to stay thoughts?

    Crosspost from r/legaladvice

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:57 PM PST

I'm pretty sure I'm screwed, but I thought I'd check with experts just to make sure.

I bought my first home in December of 2016. It's the upper left unit of a fourplex. Home inspection went great, the place was built in 1976 but the previous owners did a lot of renovations and it's a very contemporary home.

A little backstory even though it may not be completely relevant... I'm a lady who has had no real home maintenance experience thus far as I've always rented previously and had landlords to handle things that went wrong, or lived with a significant other who fixed things. Also, I live in Anchorage, Alaska and the ground moves a lot between earthquakes and freezing/thawing each year.

Anyhow, this summer I started noticing bulges in the ceiling where nails (screws?) were starting to poke through. It's gotten noticeably worse as summer progressed into fall and winter. There are cracks all along where the ceiling meets the wall in almost every room, plus cracks along the ceiling from one wall to another in the hallway. My kitchen cabinets don't even meet the ceiling anymore, there's at least a half inch gap between them.

Now that this has started happening, you can see where it was covered up previously. There are pieces of plaster falling down from the the cracks where the ceiling meets the wall. You can tell where someone threw a bunch of spackle and then painted over it in all of the seams because it doesn't match the wall mudding. It's pretty obvious that someone fixed it up just enough not to be noticeable while trying to sell the place.

Since I am not very knowledgeable in regards to home ownership, I'm just wondering if I have any options here. Other than contacting a contractor and paying to have my ceiling fixed myself. Since the HOA pays for the roof, etc (basically everything outside my inside walls), I only have a "quality plus condominium" policy.

    Any help would be appreciated.

[Michigan][Motorcycle] Having a difficult time finding out how much this may be.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:48 AM PST

As the title says, finding information about how much insuring a motorcycle in the state of Michigan may be is not going well. I even called my own insurance provider to see if I can get a ballpark and they asked me for the VIN of the one I own. I don't own one yet, i'm trying to see what the costs of everything will be before I go ahead. I told her I could a VIN we could use as an example but she said no, I have to own the bike. Bah! I thought i'd ask here, I don't want an exact price just something in the ballpark. Some places i've read say I don't even need to have insurance to ride, which I don't feel is correct... any help is appreciated. Some facts about me:

    State of Michigan

    33 Years old/man

No tickets or accidents in 10 years, only 1 accident and ticket before that.

    Great credit

Low performance "cruiser" bike is what I want, ideally 200-400cc.

    Life Insurance Strategy

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 08:35 AM PST

I recently had my 10 year term life insurance expire and I have been procrastinating getting a new policy, but I need to do so because the last thing I want is for my wife and kids to be in a bad situation if something were to happen to me.

I'm looking in the realm of $500k-1mil in coverage, but I have a few questions I'm hoping you guys can help with.

I am currently 38 years old, overweight (6'4", 265lbs), and diabetic. I am beginning to work out again and watch what I eat. My goal is to be around 230lbs by this summer. I know that losing weight can considerably change the premiums I am quoted, but that weight has to be off for a period of time for it to be considered and I definitely don't want to wait to get coverage.

I'm considering getting a truly long-term policy (20-30 years) so that as I age the premium stays low, but if I'm going to do so I don't want to have my weight hold me back from getting the best rate possible.

Would you guys suggest I get a shorter-term policy - maybe 5 years - then focusing on my health goals, keeping the weight off, and buying a longer term policy in a year or two? Will my age or status as a diabetic keep this from even being a significant savings?

    Thanks for the advice!

[Florida] [Auto] Just sold my car, want to keep car insurance

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:21 AM PST

Hey everyone! I'll be quick. I just sold my car, and called Progressive to change over to a non owner policy. I called them three weeks ago in preparation, as I know a lapse in insurance looks terrible and will hurt my rates in the future. I won't need a car for about 1.5 years, as I travel for work. Progressive is now saying the state of Florida doesn't allow non owner policies, and my only other option would be to keep the vehicle which I no longer own on my policy, and pay $35 per month, as Progressive would consider it garaged. They couldn't confirm that I wouldn't be on the hook if the new owner gets in a wreck though, and insuring a car I don't own in general seems fishy. What do I do?

Tl;dr: Sold my car, want to get a non driver policy but Progressive says Florida state law doesn't allow that. I don't want my rates to be insane in the future for a 1.5 year lapse in insurance.

    Progressive Auto: Diamond Level Discount?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:44 AM PST

I've been with Progressive for my auto-insurance for nearly 5 uninterrupted years, and will be jumping from Platinum 2 to Diamond level rewards on my next policy.

Without getting into too many details, I live in a city where insurance rates are extremely high (potholes, drunks, criminals), but I have a clean record and the 3-year safe driving discount. I'm pleased with my coverage and rates, in comparison with the other options.

Anyway, I was curious if anyone else remembers a decrease in the policy rates when they moved up into Diamond level rewards for Progressive Auto. The website says discounts are ahead, but customer representatives have been dodgy about giving an answer, and cursory Google searches have turned nothing up.

    Thank you for your time.

    Insurance Jump. Help me.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 11:02 AM PST

Policies are 6 month polices. Changes would happen in March if we stay.

So auto insurance is going up from $570 (for my car) and $1983 (for the rest of the family) to $3100 for me and $2446 for them. If I get my own policy theirs would still go up to $3400.

    • Mine= $570—————->$3100
    • Theirs= $1983————>$2446 OR $3400 if I leave

Currently insured with Allstate in Northern Virginia.

What can I do? How do I minimize our cost?

    Home Owners Question

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:09 AM PST

Just looking for any opinion/advice on my situation. I live in a townhouse middle unit that was flooded by my neighbor twice in 18 months (owned it for 20 months total at that point, welcome to home ownership, right?) So Allstate, after paying out 2 claims in 18 months said good riddance. I had a difficult time at that point finding any company willing to work with me and obviously my rates are through the roof.

How long should i wait to start shopping again? Its been about 6 months since i was dropped.

    Homeowners insurance help!

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:22 AM PST

Came home to a flooded house last week and have filed a claim with the insurance company and done all necessary things to dry it out, but I'm just looking to find out if the incident will be covered or not.

When a plumber came to look at what happened he said that the main hose under the kitchen sink got disconnected because it was missing some sort of pin to hold it in. He deemed that it was a faulty sink. We just bought the house and I looked through the inspection and there is no way to tell if the pin was there when the inspection was done. My wife had dripped the sink because we were expecting freezing temperatures and we were gone all day for work when it happened. Hose got disconnected with the faucet valve on while being gone all day was definitely a combination for disaster. I have looked through my insurance agreement and cannot figure out if this is covered, please help
