Now that busy season is here, here is the annual eating time post.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:08 PM PST

I know this thread has been made countless times, but I feel like it's a good topic to talk about around this time of the year.

My scenario: Blatantly told by my senior to eat hours last week in anticipation of busy season. Given the "just charge what is scheduled" line and even blatantly told me to just charge X even if I work Y...

Tips? Advice? What are your stories over eating time?

Food delivery services that give reward points? Big 4 first year

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:59 AM PST

    Hello,

As a first year in charge of ordering food during busy season, I'm wondering if there's a delivery website that will give me reward points for orders that I make. I make big $200+ orders for the team and was wondering if I could benefit from this arrangement...

Accounting for people with no social skills?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 06:49 PM PST

I'm currently a work in development socially. But I'm wondering if accounting is good for introverts. I know media portrays accountants as more introverted and shy.

I've been meaning to break out of my shell, but wanted to ask if this would be a suitable career.

    EDIT: Bad phrasing

Finished 1st year as an Accountant. Does it get better?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 10:44 AM PST

So, as the title says, I just recently completed my first year at my first job as an accountant. I hate it. However, I don't know if I just got stuck in a bad job or if it's just how accounting jobs go. Everyone I work with is 40+ and just lifeless and boring (I'm 23 and they won't let me forget it). My office is almost completely silent except for the once daily mention of sports and everyone's kids. All of that on top of the repetitive and monotonous work and long commute make me dream of my past life in customer service which sounds crazy but at least the people were lively and we had some fun. I just want to know if it gets better. I can't imagine spending the next 40-something years in what feels like a retirement home but less fun.

Edit: Could anyone tell me if they like their current jobs/careers in accounting for reasons other than good pay or stability? (Not trying to downplay the importance of those things at all)

How do you guys focus for the CPA after a bad relationship?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 06:08 PM PST

Well we weren't exactly official but he was dating someone else along with me and chose her. I feel heartbroken and can't seem to focus while studying for FAR :/.

Anyone else go through a similar situation? How did you focus on studying?

How does ranking work in your specific office?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:47 PM PST

Staff 1>Staff 2>Senior 1 to 4>Manager>Senior Manager>Director>Partner (Big 4 audit). Ideally you get promoted everyday 1.5 years from what I've seen.

In my previous Big 4 office it was even more ridiculous. Staff B>Staff A>Senior B to A>Supervisor>Manager>Senior Manager>Director>Partner. Supervisors were the same thing as Managers. You got promoted every 2 years BEST case scenario. Being promoted after 3 years was more common.

I heard someone very good go from Staff B to Supervisor (not even Manager) after 10 fucking years. When I was in this office they didn't promote people if it wasn't needed, growth was idiotically slow. Upper management was smug about this, saying it was because of "prestige".

For those in business modelling, what are you exit opps/outlook for that area?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 05:30 PM PST

Currently in big 4 valuations (made the switch from audit in the past 6 months). However, an opportunity opened up to move more specifically in our business modelling group. The last guy moved to a pension fund where he evaluates investments.

I'm wondering what those in business modelling see as exit opps. I also am wondering where you see your work going. I've always been interested in coding, but I've also been interested in business (specifically finance), so I view this as a chance to combine both my interests but I'm concerned about exit opps/career outlook. It seems like it mesh well with the push towards big data, but automation seems like a risk as well.

    How hard is forensic accounting?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:33 PM PST

I'm switching out of an elective online into forensic accounting. I'm currently working on my MAcc. Once I switch into forensic, I'll be taking 12 hours of accounting and wanted to see how doable everyone thinks that is. I've previously done two successive semesters with 9 hours of accounting each without much of a problem.

Hello Accountants, how long did it take you to become a CPA and at what age?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 11:53 AM PST

I'm considering continuing my journey to becoming a CPA. I won't get to detailed so long story short, I am 28y/o working full time making $60k in Toronto, I have a family (spouse & 1 y/o) and a house and I probably wouldn't be able to complete the CPA until I am 40y/o :(

I have a college diploma in accounting (Associates Degree for you Americans) so this definitely stretches out my timeline.

    Depressed and fed up

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 09:54 PM PST

I came from a highly target school for the big 4s. Had a very pretty good scholarship so I basically just cruised around in college (doesn't require high GPA to maintain my scholarship). I took on a couple internships in college, and one of them was a big 4. To be honest, I've heard stories about how big 4s hire back 90%+ of their interns, so I didn't put as much effort in my internship as I should. As predicted, I sucked, didn't put in a lot of effort and was given no offer. The senior on my engagement was super nice, but I kept making small mistakes (some of them I made beforehand).

I graduated. Most of my friends went to big 4s. I am stuck in an industry job that is not challenging at all. I actually learned a lot during my big 4 internship. I usually interview quite well, so I was able to grab a job right after I graduate. Pay is significantly lower than big 4.

This industry job is depressing me. I am afraid of not starting at a big 4. I kept in contact with a couple of my old intern friends who got full time offers and they work with a bunch of new hires their age. They made a lot of new friends.

Is there anyway I can jump back to a big 4? They usually seem to hire current students only. I heard jumping is hard, unless you are a high GPA student (Mines is low 3). Not to mention, my job is basically bookkeeping (not useful for big 4). There's some problems going on in my family and I am likely going to be the sole breadwinner for my parents. The salary progress in big 4s and the experience will help me significantly. It depresses me that I might not be able to give a good future for my parents because I f'ed up my one chance in a big 4. Anyone who have been in a similar situation and can give me some advice/encouragement?

    CPA without a Masters?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 02:26 PM PST

I am currently a 3rd year accounting student at CU Boulder and I am in a position to graduate with 150 credit hours. I know this means that I will be able to take the CPA exam once I graduate. However, I will not be able to get a masters in accounting unless I stay in school for another 2 semesters. I have 2 questions for people that are in the industry: 1. Is it worth it to get a CPA without a masters or will I have trouble getting a job without the MS? 2. Is it worth it to stay the extra 2 semesters to get the MS?

    Thanks for your help.

[edit:] Honestly, these are amazing responses and I now know exactly what I need to do going forward. Thank you guys so much! You are all awesome.

    Office Culture vs. Firm Prestige

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 04:29 PM PST

At my second public firm and I made the move for more prestige on my resume. But I have quickly learned that the office culture is far from what I am used to. Does anyone work for a national or Big 4 firm and also enjoy their time in the office?

    Government to IFRS-Related Work [CAN]

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:36 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I'd like to work in a different country (not USA) within the next 5 years. A lot of the job postings I've seen in countries I'm interested in ask for public firm and IFRS experience, so I was wondering how I could best make the jump into gaining this experience.

My current plan is to see if I can get referrals to public firms' audit or tax dept as an intermediate/associate, as well as talking to recruiters of mid-sized firms that audit public companies in industries that I am interested in working for someday. What do you all think of this?

    Thanks in advance!

    About me:

    • Passed CFE
    • 2+ years as small corporation tax auditor (1 year as a student)
    • Chairing volunteer committee
    • Won awards for work and academic performance

    Managed Accounting Services?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:15 PM PST

Hey guys, I wonder if anyone had any insight into what managed accounting services at a local public firm would be like.

I had an initial interview today with HR and couldn't get a good feel of what the job would be like. I've spent all 7 years of my accounting career in industry and it's a bit intimidating to think of going to public despite exceeding the required qualifications.

    Advice? Insights? Thanks in advance!

    Resumé Templates

    Posted: 09 Jan 2018 07:08 PM PST

    https://www.etsy.com/search?q=resume%20template&ref=auto1&as_prefix=res

Just found how there are really good resume templates on Etsy. Can I get everyone's opinion on these? Obviously I know to stay away from the colorful ones and the ones with your photograph, but the text ones with the icons for number and email seem really good to me.
