Really stupid question, but someone please humor me.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 05:14 PM PST

Every paycheck, you pay federal and state income taxes. What does it mean when people talk about standard deduction and itemized deductions to lower your taxable income when you file your taxes. You already paid taxes on your regular checks. Are deductions and adjusting taxable income just for your tax return? Thanks and sorry for the absurdly stupid question.

Intern in training feeling sad and incompetent... does this go away?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 01:39 PM PST

Just finished my third day of training, mostly learning to use audit software. We audited cash and accounts payable and I am not lying when I say I literally had no clue what was going on the entire time. I am above average in excel proficiency, but I truly had no idea what was going on in terms of following procedures and filling out results tabs. I feel like our training has been totally useless to me and I am seriously wondering why the hell I signed up for any of this. Everyone says interns start off knowing nothing and blah blah blah but I am severely discouraged unlike anything I've ever experienced. I already feel like a burden and a liability to my engagement team and I've yet to actually meet them. Am I in the wrong career or can anybody else recall feeling dead inside and regretting every life choice after training?

Any tips on breaking into tax?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 04:09 PM PST

Currently in industry, staff accountant role. No tax experience. Need to get out of industry because career path feels stagnant. No CPA at the moment.

In deciding audit v tax- I'd prefer to jump into tax.

Should I set sights on B4, regional, or small firm? Are the exit opportunities for tax different than regional v B4 or is it a matter of specialization that defines the exit ops.

    Advice would be appreciated.

Now that 2017 has come to an end, I thought it was a good time to create a thread to see how much you worked compared to your peers.

Include your hours work, realization, utilization, company size and position or anything else you think its important for comparison.

My time as a government auditor [US] [Southeast]

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 10:14 PM PST

Good morning/afternoon/evening /r/accounting users particularly the students

I created a similar post sharing my experience as a cost accountant.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Accounting/comments/60be6j/my_time_as_a_cost_accountant_us_southeast/

So now I'm going to share my time as a Legislative Auditor.

    • Official Title: Legislative Auditor- The reason it's called "legislative" is because it is a part of the Legislative branch.

    • Salary: 44,800 a year

    • Benefits I picked – For 2017-HSA w/ $500 employer contribution. For 2018, that has changed to $250 and I picked up vision. I earn 1 day of annual leave (vacation time) and sick leave (the backup vacation time). The premium is 66/mo for HSA and 6/mo for the vision for 2018.

    • Hours - We have a flexible schedule. My usual schedule is 6am-5pm MTW, 6am-2:30pm on Thursday. During our fall busy season it was 6am-6pm MTWR, 6am-9:30am – F. One hour lunch of course. I earned 120 hrs of comp and took time off from December 22 to January 16th. And I'll still have a little bit left to as a buffer between my annual leave.

    • We audit agencies, all the community colleges and universities, special corporations under the government, and single audit (federal audit that is my upcoming assignment).

    • Our section is the financial section and has about 50-55 people. There is a local government section.

    • We have a supervisor (this is similar to a Senior leading a public accounting audit) for the audit and a manager over the audit (a manager is a manager).

    • Time in position- 1 year

    Daily activities:

I think most auditors have described what actual auditing is like enough on /r/accounting. And it really depends on what audit assignment you're on. I'll elaborate on this if asked.

Differences between cost accounting and government accounting:

Super relaxed, cheap health insurance and it's REALLY slow.

For example, the Fiscal year ends on 6/30 but the department of finance doesn't finish closing the books until mid-December. They are literally spending 6ish months to close the books and I remember month-end in private being hellish so I can't imagine year-end lasting for 5-6 months lol.

When I compare this job to my old job, I feel like there is more room for fucking up and I really can take my time to see why I do what I do. Also, I realized that the government auditors are all bark and no bite and how an audit finding is handled depends on the management. Certain agencies have a low tolerance for findings b/c the legislature will get on their ass. Other agencies have built-in immunity toward negative effects of audit findings. I still don't know why or how. The main thing is if the legislature isn't worried about it, top management isn't worried about it, then the lower levels don't care. The opposite is true as well.

If I ever were to make the switch to management even I would talk shit to the auditors and even taunt them a little. Hell, I may even give sarcastic responses like "I'll get you the document within 2-3 months".

I also really enjoy my co-workers. This is something you can't put a salary on (well…maybe 80k-100k). I feel like we can cut up and goof around. The managers to a limited extend cut up. We talk about my dating life, funny audit stories, and even gossip from the grapevine. We still get our work done of course.

Here are two stories to really paint the picture of who I work with:

*1) I ripped my pants in front of my female audit supervisor. Everyone heard my pants rip. I immediately tell her to shield her eyes. Everyone is laughing. I check to make sure the damage isn't significant and nothing was showing. My male audit supervisor ends it with you'll feel a breeze walking to your car tonight.

*2) I hit a red bird on my way to work. I told my supervisor that I would be late b/c I pulled over and checked my car for damage. Months later, the governor sends a holiday email with a picture of a similar looking bird. That supervisor forwards the email to me telling me I would never escape from what I've done.

    The fuck ups

So far the biggest fuck up I've done is signoff on a work paper too quickly without finishing all of the work. Also, I hate reading memos. It's the most annoying part of my job in my opinion. I'd rather crunch numbers and test details than read most of the memos. Also, it took me a while to get use to using tick marks. Overall, I feel like I could do this job for years and not get tired of it. At the same time, I will admit that I would like to make more money and I do feel a slight pull back to private. I think I would go back to private if I had similar co-workers. Or if I was going into a management position high enough to influence the tone a little.

Let me know if you have questions!

    Thank you

    Edit-Format changes, cleaning up

One accounting credit/hour short from NY CPA. Tips for quick, cheap online credit

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:33 PM PST

I recently submitted an application to transfer my MA CPA license to NY, as I've moved to the city this last year. NY requires 33 of the 150 credits to be accounting credits... and I have 32. Does anyone know of a cheap/quick/easy way to gain that final one credit? I've looked at online courses and they are all for 3 credits, which is typically $600-$800. I've been out of college for four years now, have already passed all my CPA exams and just want to find the quickest solution to getting my NY license!

    Transcript question.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 09:07 PM PST

Hi all! About to start a MS Accounting program and I have a question about recruitment. After I finished my undergraduate degree, I took some accounting classes at a separate college as a non degree student for practice. Unfortunately as I was working full time and dealing with a very extreme circumstance, I received a D in one of them (long story). Will I be expected to provide transcripts for this misadventure when recruiting starts? If so any thoughts on how to deal with it?

I had the unbelievable luck of having not one, but TWO sims on pensions that, go figure, weren't even touched upon in Becker. MCQs also went into such great detail about exact time frames for certain transactions/contracts...this was my first CPA exam, and I feel dispirited!

How do I convince management this practice is not ethical, hypothetically?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:09 PM PST

If you are a student looking to boost your resume, or maybe you're genuinely interested in management accounting (taking the CMA?)...

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 07:29 PM PST

then you should apply for the IMA Accounting Honor Society (IAHS).

There are a few simple criteria:

1.) be a declared major in accounting, finance, or MIS 2.) GPA of 3.0 or higher 3.) pay one-time, lifetime $50 membership fee 4.) email the IAHS your transcript 5.) junior year of undergrad or later (includes MSc or PhD) 6.) enrolled in accredited university/college in U.S. of A

You get a fancy certificate, a LinkedIn badge, and snazzy cords for graduation. Plus bragging rights!

I applied in early December (I will take the CMA soon) and just got my stuff in the mail recently, right in time for grad school application letters! And don't forget, you can become a student member of the IMA as well!

    So if you're interested, apply!

Chances of being hired. Big 4 Miami

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 01:24 PM PST

This might be a dumb question but i'm curious what my chances are.

I am about to apply to the big 4 in the coming days and just want to know if my chances are good and what position is reasonable for me to apply for.

I am 22 years old. have about 4 years experience in accounting (public and private) at a small CPA firm.

Recently passed all 4 parts of the CPA exam but still 21 semester hours short for licensure. Want to work in Miami area but whatever i can get i guess.

So you guys think my chances are good? would applying to a senior associate position be reasonable? Are they even hiring right now?

    Thanks accounting peeps.

How much notice should I give before leaving my job?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2018 06:18 AM PST

I'm in a management role at a smallish company. I've only been here 7 months, but I now have an opportunity to move to a F500 company. I know that two weeks is the norm, but we don't really cross train or document procedures here so I'm worried that two weeks won't be enough time to train my replacement.

I don't want to wrong anyone here because they're all nice people, but I also don't want the F500 company to choose another candidate if I tell them I won't be able to start for 3-4 weeks. I plan to start making procedure guides immediately to help with the transition.
