    How do airlines record revenue?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 09:38 PM PST

Specifically it occurred to me that some flights traverse time zones and may take off in one day and actually fly backwards to the previous day so what is the cutoff determinate? Is it recorded in the point of origin? And who owns the revenue of international flights, is it the point of origin subsidiary or the destination subsidiary?

What is the salary differential and and ability to find a job for a CPA vs non CPA?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 09:30 PM PST

I passed the CPA exam but have not activated my license yet, because I haven't been working for many years. I am now looking to return to accounting and wondering how valuable the CPA license is in terms of salary differential and ability to get the job.

    Help! I need structure!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 04:04 PM PST

    Hi all,

I am very unhappy in my job due to the lack of structure. My manager and co-workers speak too fast and jump around at different subjects all the time so it's difficult for me to fully understand what all I need to do. If I try to ask clarifying questions, the manager will raise her voice at me and act like I'm annoying her. She will not communicate expectations and will change expectations without communicating, then will yell at me when things are not as she expects them. People from other departments will give me accrual information, which I book, and then they'll tell me that it's wrong. It's like they can't get their accruals in order, but I get blamed for it. This is a Senior Accountant role but is 90% FP&A (budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and some journal entries if reclasses are needed). I am thinking I need to go back to a corporate accounting role where I book similar journal entries each month and perform the same reconciliations each month in order to succeed. I feel that I am very smart, but I recognize that my mind works in a structured way. Anyway, I wanted to see what you guys think.

Brief history of my career so far:

    1. Bachelors and Masters at a top 10 university. Passed CPA on first attempt while in the Masters program.

    2. Public Accounting job at mid-size firm doing audits and tax returns of middle market companies - hated it. Abusive and toxic culture, and management would not communicate expectations (we were expected to read their minds). Was constantly switching between audits and tax returns, and had trouble learning. Would receive conflicting feedback (would get yelled at for not performing procedures on an immaterial balance but then would get yelled at for performing procedures on an immaterial balance). I lasted 1.5 years and got out.

    3. Corporate Accounting Job at a mid-size subsidiary of a large publicly traded company. This was a great environment - the managers treated me very well. I performed month end close (journal entries, balance sheet recs, variance analysis, etc.) and really enjoyed the work. I was able to focus on one thing at a time and complete them before moving on to the next thing. After about 3 months, I had pretty much mastered my role and enjoyed it. It was nice to finally work 40 hour weeks again and to have a sense of accomplishment after leaving work for the day at 5pm. Opportunities for advancement were limited and the new director was a bad communicator who would not communicate expectations clearly and would yell - for example, he would assign very vague research projects, I would write up a really good memo which my managers would approve, but then the director would scrap it and write up a memo from scratch. I realized then that I hated accounting research because it is too subjective. He would also give me other projects (like reviewing contracts and doing IT work) without any clear direction whatsoever. I understand the need for me to be proactive but I CANNOT READ PEOPLES' MINDS!!!!! I started looking for new opportunities elsewhere.....

    4. Corporate Accounting - Large publicly traded company . This company was growing at an extraordinary pace and so my duties completely changed month to month. There were constantly new acquisitions and the entire department was a complete mess. I was in charge of some financial reporting as well and the part for which I was responsible was impossible to get right - there were so many moving pieces that it was impossible to fully wrap my head around. The balance sheet accounts were impossible to reconcile - way too much random activity that didn't make sense. The culture was toxic and people were constantly pointing fingers at each other when the real problem was that the company was growing too fast for its own good. I left after a year.....

    5. Corporate Accounting / FP&A Hybrid role - Large privately held company - This is where I am currently (see top of the post). I think part of the problem is that I don't care for FP&A and I am not good at it. It is just not structured enough for me. I also feel that management has neglected me (I will go weeks without hearing from anyone) and has not given me what I need to succeed. Maybe I belong in a mid-size company (similar to the subsidiary from #2)? I have been here almost a year now and have begun looking.

Is there any hope for me? I feel that GL Accounting is going to be the best place for me career wise. Please tell me that I can have a successful career in GL Accounting - I'm thinking a Controller making 130k plus bonus would make me very very happy. I always hear of people leaving public and having great experiences in private but so far my experience has been negative (besides the subsidiary from #2 until the new director came in).

TLDR; Great accounting student in school but have had a difficult experience the first 5 years in his career.

Is it weird to order a chair for myself at my B4 office?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 09:39 AM PST

We are getting a new building but I am not sure we are getting new chairs too. The ones we had on my internship were alright, but I would prefer to get my own chair since I'll be sitting a lot. Is this weird?

I was just wondering if we could globally adopt a standard to name engagements beginning with the date so that whenever I am alt+tabing I can see right away which window is for current year and which for prior.

Long story short: name the engagement "2017 YE audit client XYZ" ....and not "Client XYZ audit YE 2017"

    Government accounting jobs

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 07:23 PM PST

Just applied to an government accounting job. I was just wondering how competitive the hiring process is. If there are opportunities for advancement if you already passed the CPA or your stuck in whatever role you start off at since I hear a lot of people don't want to leave once they're in. How the work-life balance is and the exit opportunities back to private industry that are available if you want to leave in 5 years.

Anyone have their resume for when they left public to industry? Would like to use as a guide.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 01:10 PM PST

I haven't done a resume since year 4 of 5 in college when I applied for my internship.

As such, I would like a good example resume to use as a guide for creating my resume to flee from public to industry.

I'm in public so I don't like to think for myself, I just update SALY or use a similar client as a reference. Which is why using someone else's [censored] resume would be great!

    CPA Exam Study Advice

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 03:11 PM PST

Okay, I know there are tons of other threads out there, but I am looking for something a little bit more specific.

I have recently gotten the Becker bundle. I am looking to pass all exams before I start with Big 4 in July. Any advice on study techniques specifically with Becker? Should I get the flash cards, too? Also, any recommendations on other resources I should utilize as well will be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Edit: Also, what order should I take them in if I want to do the hardest ones first? I plan on taking FAR first, but not sure about the rest.

    Public sector audit?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 11:16 AM PST

I have recently been given the opportunity to move within a firm to their public sector audit department (DC area). Right now I do a hodgepodge of commercial and not for profit clients. Anyone here have experience in this area of audit? Any pros and cons of the job itself and the exit ops that go along with it?

People in FP&A, how much of your job resembles a staff accountant's and how much of it is it more strategic/actual FP&A?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 01:45 AM PST

Currently doing FDD/TAS, but decided that I don't want to use it to segue into investment banking like I initially wanted to. Considering doing FP&A instead, but I know that sometimes those roles are masked as FP&A but are actually more like a staff accountant. Just wanted some input from people who made the jump.

Still in school, interned w/ a B4 assurance group. Asked to swap into FDD for FT. Have a phone interview in a week with the head FDD recruiter for the US. What should I know/prepare for?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 11:06 AM PST

I literally just coasted into my audit internship and FT offer, so there weren't really any interviews or tests. Are there things I should know prior to the call? I'm assuming for now just know basic interview questions, have a good reason for wanting to swap, and mention what I know about the group. Beyond that, will I potentially need to know any technical stuff?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, all!

    Undergrad accounting courses

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 06:00 PM PST

Who here remembers taking intermediate financial accounting 1, intermediate managerial accounting? How hard were they relative to intro to financial and managerial? I earned an A and a B respectively in my intro courses but had to devote like 75% of my semester study time to intro to managerial. Doable but rough.

Thoughts on intro to tax as well? That is pretty much my next semester and just curious what I am in for.

Travel Tips: 1 day round trip for interview

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 02:02 PM PST

I'm in the final stage of interviewing for a job and they want me to interview at their headquarters. About a 2.5 hour flight in which I will go directly to their offices for interviews and then I am flying back in the evening.

Does anyone have any travel tips for 1 day round trip? Should I wear my suit on the plane? Should I bring a suitcase with change of clothes even though I'm not staying over?

    Any advice is appreciated.

Career advice: Currently an accountant at a large Credit Union but received an offer from a local CPA firm

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:31 PM PST

Background: I just graduated with my BS in Accounting with a 3.25 GPA. Start my MS in Accounting this month and will pursue the CFE and CPA afterwards. If I still feel up for the challenge afterwards I may pursue a Masters in Finance.

I am currently working as an Accounting Manager (in training at this point) at a credit union that is growing at around $100 million in assets per year which is mainly due to mergers. I work under the SVP of Finance and we have one accounting assistant. I enjoy the industry but my boss is sub-par in the fact that I am not given much guidance to learn and creates a somewhat hostile work environment. The small credit union I worked at before had a much better work environment. I like learning on the job. Future growth opportunities would be VP of Accounting in 5ish years if I stay where I am.

My ultimate goal is to move to a large city out of rural Ohio but need to get experience and save money in order to do this. I like the banking industry and the firm that I have an offer at has multiple bank clients that they audit.

In regards to preparing for the CPA exam, my career overall, and moving to a large city (preferrably Washington D.C. or Chicago), would I be better to stay where I am or move into public accounting and get some tax and audit experience.

Offer from the accounting firm includes a $4,000-$5,000 raise, but I am currently hourly and would be salary at the new position.

Tips for the first internship interview?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:10 PM PST

Hello! I'm currently an undergraduate, and I have an interview coming up for a summer internship at a public accounting firm. I am very nervous since this is basically my first "real" professional interview. I do not have any accounting experience besides academically as this will be the first. I've worked at basic retailers and did some work as a research assistant (nothing to do with accounting though). I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me any tips and maybe offer some questions they might ask (based on your experiences)? Thank you everyone! Any help is appreciated.

[CAN] Does PERT do any testing or calls to the company I work for? How does PERT qualify work experience?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2018 05:02 PM PST

I am worried that CPA may call the company I work for, I am doing the EVR for my designation. Should I talk to my supervisor's boss? I am kind of inbetween departments in finance/accounting and assisting other managers, I am worried it may cause some confusion for CPA and my workplace.
