Resume Critique for move out of Public

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:44 PM PST

I am an experienced staff and want to make the jump from a small firm to B4. What's the best way to get their attention?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:10 PM PST

I feel like applying online is just going to mean my resume gets thrown into a void.

How long is your commute to work? How do you make the time more enjoyable?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 02:13 PM PST

I was able to land a job but it's a lot farther than my other job. In the mornings it takes usually between 50-70 minutes to get there. The actual job isn't too bad but the commute is starting to get to me and I have only been here a week. On the commute back I'm usually starving so eat junk food on the way back or will pick up fast food. Then when I get home I just want to watch tv, instead of working out or doing other productive things.

Sorry about the long rant but I'm pretty pissed that the job is less than 20 miles away. But it takes so long to get there.

Recruiter repeatedly asks for my current salary, has the nerve to list "Salary Negotiation" as a skill on his/her LinkedIn

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 05:34 AM PST

What a joke. Can we all just agree to refuse these invasion of privacy requests? It's the few people who cave that set a precedent, which leads these scumbags to think this economic bullying is acceptable.

What's your worst busy season dinner order story?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 09:09 PM PST

I'm a noob and had my first bad one today, just wanna hear everyone else's

Added: Ordered dinner at like 6:15, says it'll be ready by 7. Seamless update to 7:15. Call at 7:20 and they say 15-20 more minutes. Call at 7:40 and delivery person not there yet. Call at 8:10 and delivery person "will be there in 5." Food reached at 8:35. Manager pissed, recognized it was out of my control, but whole team still hangry af and I felt terrible

    Declining a promotion...?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:09 PM PST

My manager is pushing that I go for a promotion. Same job just higher workload and from hourly to salaried. I feel kind of stupid but my inclination is to decline it and stick with where I am for now.

The pay raise would be very solid but I really just don't like the work and feel I would be happier just mastering my current workload so I could be comfortable there instead of constantly stressing myself out to keep up on unfulfilling work (trying to figure out a way to move into s. It's difficult enough as it is to take vacation days without getting swamped on return.

That said, apparently I already have the workload of the position I would be promoted to (just transitioned so I don't feel the effect fully yet) so I would likely need to request to have it lowered if I decline..

I'm currently thinking I won't take it but am wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and can provide opinions/thoughts on if it is a stupid career choice or not.. Thanks for reading!

How did you get an internship or business related job with no connections?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 10:09 PM PST

I'm currently a senior, graduating in May with a 3.3 GPA. I have 0 personal connections to any firm, I've been applying everywhere on indeed and snagajob with no luck. I can't find anything, not even a simple data-entry job. I've been on a few interviews with firms that have come to my school, but none of them get back to me.

I'm involved on campus, I have interesting hobbies (music and philosophy) but no one seems to want me. I've been to the career center to make my resume very strong, but it still doesn't work.

I'm in the middle of a crisis because nearly everyone in my grade level has had an internship or upper-level position at this point, and I'm still stuck trying to find a job. I'm still working a shitty catering position for the past 2 years.

How did you get started in business and at what point did you get it?

    VITA or Unpaid Internship?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 05:48 PM PST

    Hello,

Third-year transfer student here. During the fall quarter, I was too scared to apply to any of the larger firms without a GPA from my university as I just started here and my overall Community College GPA was below a 3.0. I've been doing better at my university, but I didn't hear anything back from any of the smaller firms I've applied to so now I think it's time to move on and try other options. I can see the unpaid internships positions from a month back are still available so it seems like it would be relatively easier to get but I also realize I can opt to do VITA. While I'm sure I can do both, which would you prioritize for a half decent resume? I suppose it would be easier to answer with a goal in mind so let's say the goal is to be a Controller.

tl;dr VITA or Unpaid accounting-related internship for the resume?

*edit I appreciate the responses guys, I feel content with what I got out of it. Have a nice day =)

    What do I wear?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 05:17 PM PST

I have to take my contract and other documents into my first ever accounting job today. I imagine it'll just be drop it off and not much more...

Is trousers and a shirt overdressed? Should I be wearing jeans and a nice t shirt?

I know I'm overthinking this but still!

Seeking advice for upcoming busy season

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 08:42 PM PST

Started at a new firm about 4 months ago and I have more than 2 years of audit experience. Rarely did tax at previous firms besides doing basic tasks in Lacerte. Current firm wants me to do returns and get into heavy tax this season. Need advice or pointers that will get me through. Any input appreciated and I wish all my fellow PA slaves the best this year.

Santa Clara University CAAP worth it for a recent grad trying to recruit into the Big 4 Bay Area?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 08:38 PM PST

Hey y'all! I graduated from a non-target school (3.4 gpa) in SoCal with all the units to sit for the CPA exam (Just took for FAR). I was unable to build a network due to the lack of on campus recruitment. I've heard and read great things about the recruitment opportunities in the CAAP program.

I was wondering if it would be worth it for me to enroll in the Santa Clara CAAP program or a masters program for the chance to go through on campus recruitment with larger public firms. Any information or advice would be great thanks!

Anyone who has taken FAR in Q1 2018,

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 08:37 AM PST

Can you give me a heads up as to some of the sims/mc you remember seeing? I know its random but I'm retaking it and want to make sure I kill this test on Friday. I got killed on the govt/nfp the first time and felt very unprepared for the sims. But now, I'm ready to kill contingencies, subsequent events, ARO, or any bank rec that comes my way.

Is it harder to get a gov job, big4, regional after college?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:33 PM PST

My GPA is a "low" score of 3.0 right now (I know I need atleast a 3.3 to be competitive right?) I'm a sophomore for another semester and I'm curious about what steps I should take in the next 2 years to get the jobs I want.

I kinda just want to get a gov job, I have no real excitement to work 60+ hours even if I did make $100k+ a year. I don't care about money that much.

I'm still planning on joining BAP because apparently that's a good idea.

What else can I do/join? Should I get a summer internship as a sophomore? Even if I'll only finish my 1st intro into accounting class this semester. That'd be my only accounting experience

Nanny Taxes - How Should I Pay

    Posted: 08 Jan 2018 07:33 PM PST

My wife worked as Nanny between jobs last year and no taxes were taken out of her pay.

Do I have to 1) work with her employer to get registered with a TIN and remit their portion of taxes, or 2) can I save the hassle by reporting the income as being from self-employment and pay both the employee and employer portions of the tax.

I ask because I believe household employees are specifically exempted from claiming income on the 1099 Form.

Will I be penalized if I choose to pay the full amount?
