Loan transfer time frame from Nelnet for PSLF

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 05:59 PM PST

Hi. I have (yet another) PSLF question.

I received an email from Nelnet (my original servicer) on November 10th stating I was being transferred to MyFedLoan since I am enrolling in the PSLF program. On the 20th, my loans were actually transferred, so now I am showing a $0 balance on Nelnet.

My issue is that I haven't received anything from MyFedLoan -- no account info or anything about how to log in or make payments. Is this typical? Of course I'll give them a call but I thought I'd check in here and see if this is normal. If so, any idea when I can expect to hear from MyFedLoan? Am I going to owe back payments (my due date for my Nelnet account is coming up)?

EdFinancial - Fishy email scamming me? Someone please help

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 10:57 PM PST

So a few days ago I applied for a loan via my college's website. The next day I get an email from EdFinancial stalking about a message in regards to my status of my loan. 2 days ago, I get an email saying my grace period ends in 2 months? I never even heard of EdFinancial, let alone take a loan from them.

I clicked the email and it said I have to register for an account, which is weird because shouldn't I have make an account before making a loan? It asked for my SSN, and I got super sketched.

I talked to Financial Aid today at my college and asked them about it. They said they don't have any idea what that is and it isn't link to my school. So I was just wondering if that thing is a scam, considering I never made an account or got a loan from them in the first place.

    Question on PSLF

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 02:17 PM PST

I have been searching the internet but must be overlooking the answer. If you have multiple direct loans...is the forgiveness timeline (120 payments) calculated separately for each loan or does it start from the oldest loan and any after are forgiven as well? For example I have one loan from my undergrad that went into repayment in 2013...then after a couple years went to graduate school while I worked and so those loans went into repayment at a later date. I'm planning to send in the forms to see if I qualify but was wondering this.

What will proposed changes do to those eligible for REPAYE and PAYE?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:30 PM PST

I am currently paying off loans under REPAYE due to the interest rate subsidy. I was on PAYE very briefly (and am still eligible for it), but I moved over to REPAYE as it was cheaper. I had planned on moving back into PAYE in year 19 to benefit from the quicker loan forgiveness (20 vs 25 years). Will the GOP plan block this strategy for me? Thanks!

Loan for two semesters or entire program.

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 02:52 PM PST

I'm going back to school for a two year program that is four consecutive semesters. I already have a federal loan, but I will also need to take out a private loan.

I was accepted for a loan with Sallie Mae, but have not accepted yet. Through Sallie Mae, I was only able to apply for this coming spring and summer semesters for now.

I'm working on applying with Sun Trust as well. With Sun Trust, or other loans, should I only apply for two semesters for now, and more after the first two, or should I apply for the full four semesters now? Will I even be able to apply for my last two semesters, if I already have a loan for the first two.

Thanks for the help! This is all very foreign to me, and I appreciate the help.

For those of you interested in negotiated rulemaking - the current gainful employment session is being live streamed

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 07:42 AM PST

At least for now - the group is still deciding whether to allow it. Today is the first day so right now they are mostly doing housekeeping - they SHOULD get to the actual issues soon. https://www.facebook.com/higherednotdebt/videos/2131912277071330/

At the very least you can see what the process is like. Warning - this will not be the most exciting thing you've ever seen

What do you think of this loan offer?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2017 08:22 AM PST

    • Loan | $23,000
    • Variable Rate | Interest Only Payments
    • Interest Rate: 4.330%
    • Repayment Terms: 60 Months

    • In-School Monthly Payment: $84.95

    • Post-School Monthly Payment: $437.10

    • Total Cost: $28,774.50

After this semester with 99.50% certainty might not even need the full 23k.

      • 1. Would I be penalized for returning about 18k?
      • 2. The payments are realistic and affordable since I have a job already lined up after I graduate. item 3. I have a part-time job to pay for that pesky $84.95 a month while going to school full-time.
      • 4. What are your thoughts and concerns?
      • 5. This is a Variable Interest Rate w/ Interest Only Payments.
      • 6. This semester cost without books is $3,270.95. <-Tuition
      • 7. Books would most like be under $200. (I'm blessed to have a hookup or else they would be more than this)
      • 8. I think that is all the information I have so far. What do you think?

    Deferment of Parent PLUS Loan

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 02:32 PM PST

I have seen the general info on the financial aid gov website regarding deferment eligibility. I am looking for information, for my parents, regarding their eligibility for deferment if I am no longer classified as their dependent.

My understanding is that basically all student loan and aid stuff with my parents ends when I am no longer filed as dependent on taxes.

I know that deferment is not a good idea but they insist on it, they are not exactly 'financially responsible' humans.
