General Electric to cut 4,500 jobs in Europe: source

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:56 AM PST

General Electric Co (GE.N) plans to cut as many as 4,500 jobs in Europe as the U.S. industrial conglomerate shrinks its troubled power generation business, a labor union source said on Tuesday.

GE did not confirm the numbers but said it was "reviewing its operations to ensure the business is best positioned to respond to our market realities and for long-term success." The company had presented a proposal to the European body representing legacy Alstom employees, it added.

Last month, GE Power Chief Executive Russell Stokes said the company could reduce its global footprint by 30 percent.

Say you have a black box that prints a real $100 USD bill every day forever, reliably. How would you value that asset?

Given no other income, if you make 5k in a taxable stock account and then put that 5k in an IRA, does that zero out your income?

Am I right that for every dollar someone makes from bitcoin, someone will eventually lose a dollar.

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:34 PM PST

You here stories about plenty of people making millions of dollars, but what about the people losing that million. It might not have happened yet, because people continue to buy, but bitcoin doesn't create new money. I can't even imagine how many people are gonna get fucked when it inevitable crashes, even if it never goes below 10k again.

How Many Stocks Do You Hold?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 05:59 PM PST

I know this sub is really big on indexing, but for the stock pickers out there - how many holdings do you have in your portfolio?

I'm 28 and right now I'm 100% equities. I have 10 holdings but I'd really like to cut it down to 6-8 and would like to get some feedback.

Daily advice thread. All questions about your personal situation should be asked here

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 04:05 AM PST

If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or anything similar. There is no single answer to this question, but we will also need A LOT MORE information if we are to give some sort of answer

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive girlfriend? (not really an asset)
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Be aware that these answers are just opinions of Redditors and should be used as a starting point for your research. You should strongly consider seeing a registered financial rep before making any financial decisions!

    Rough 2017 For Value Investors?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 04:08 PM PST

Has anyone else with a value-focused portfolio experienced a bad 2017? My portfolio is -3% YTD and I'm wondering if other value investors have had a less-than stellar year. I know VBR is up pretty nicely but I feel like the bulk of the money is flooding into large cap growth stocks. Here are my current holdings..

GME BKE FRAN BRID FONR AGX JCTCF SCKT IDCC NTIP

I'm not too concerned with the poor performance as I plan on holding these positions for 3+ years, but I am curious to know if anyone else has had such a bad year in this "record breaking" market.

Fannie Mae Preferreds Going Off Today

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 07:46 AM PST

For anyone wondering why Fannie Mae preferred shares are taking off today (up>30% for many at time of this post), Bloomberg published an article after the bell yesterday saying Senators Warner and Corker are working on a bill to overhaul the mortgage financing system that would "make the preferred shares whole or close to it."

How long does it take for a fed rate rise to affect the bond market?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:59 AM PST

I am interested in moving some of my short term reserves out of cash and into some bond funds but I wanted to wait until after the fed raises rates next week. I understand that it probably won't affect any of the bond funds that much but i figure since I am this close, I might as well wait. Will the rate rise have an automatic affect on these funds yields/price?

High valuations for stocks and real estate as people are looking to invest their money...

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:08 AM PST

I've heard this reason - there's nowhere else to put money with the valuations of real estate, stocks, and fixed income. Could this be why bitcoin is rocketing at a ridiculous rate?

    More Tax Questions

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:59 PM PST

    1) If you make 1k usd on a MSFT call that's ITM in less than a year, and then reinvest that 1K in MSFT calls that are OTM, is that a wash sale? Would you owe taxes on that 1k?

    2) if short term capital gains are taxed as regular income but you have no other income to speak of, what rate would you need to pay on something like $20k in short term capital gains? Or $10k?

What do we know about the new tax plan and FIFO for stock trading valuations? Also did the 401k “catch up” provisions get removed?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:26 PM PST

I read earlier this week that the new stock valuation scheme was going to require first in first out and that the 401k catch-up provisions got removed. Does any of this hold water? With the repeal of net-neutrality and this, I feel kind of sick.

    Foreign Currency for Diversification?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 09:04 PM PST

Anyone looked into this? For example the Norwegian Krone seems attractive as it's pretty independent of USD. Not sure if anyone used this tactic to any degree, or what would be the best way to go about it. Suppose it's not stupid, what's the best way to store that money? A foreign savings account?

Putting money in Mutual Fund and Stocks?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 06:22 AM PST

Sorry if this is a generic question, but I couldn't find anything on this. All the posts talk about putting 100% in index funds or mutual funds.

I'm wondering if I can put lets say 30% into some Fidelity Mutual Fund and the rest I will invest?

Also how do I go about finding a mutual fund to invest in? Does this take a lot of research or do I just pick the one that's been most consistent.

I've been looking at FDEWX, FBGRX, and FDEGX

    Thanks

How do you guys decide which option strike price to purchase at?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:03 PM PST

As I'm debating which one to purchase at, I'm calculating the return at one price, and then another, and then the same between other prices, and it just comes out to a lot of math. Do you guys have any rules of thumb for quick option decisions/calculations?

Should I open a bank account separate from my main bank account for trading/investing online?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 07:46 PM PST

I have a checking account but I was wondering if I should open a savings account and move the majority of my money there, and then just keep whatever I want to use in the checking account. Or I could open another checking account for it. I'd be linking it to Scottrade (Ameritrade?) and Coinbase for purchasing stocks and crypto currency. What are your general opinions? I don't want to keep all my money in the linked bank account in case anything happens.

    Thanks

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 10:36 PM PST

Right now it is straight USD which is vulnerable to inflation. What is the alternative to that?

An early ‘Christmas gift’ from OPEC could spark a record year for US shale producers, oil expert Tom Kloza says

    Posted: 07 Dec 2017 08:45 AM PST

The analyst who accurately called oil's bottom in in 2015 sees a boom for U.S. shale producers.
