Boss sold his small business, didn't even tell us Posted: 04 Dec 2017 07:10 PM PST I've been working for a local family owned small business for going on 8 years in January. I worked my way up to the "top of the totem pole" I guess you could say and literally run the place. No, seriously, boss man asks me for help multiple times per day. I have always felt valued, because I really am valuable to the business. In return, he has always paid me well, paid vacation time, flexible with scheduling, etc. I have always gone wayyyyy above and beyond for this man and his business. In fact I take a lot of pride in what it has become. Lately, lots of hushed phone calls with doors shut, inventory management, weird people stopping by for meetings. So I straight up asked him if he was selling the business. He told me no. Point blank. I have spent 40 hours a week for the last 8 years with this dude and he lied to my face. I've still figured things were going on behind the scenes but kept my mouth shut. Turns out I even helped the two buyers (they came in acting like customers) one day... I wrote one guys name down and asked my boss who he was and just got a shrug. Well, today those two gentleman showed up and standing next to my boss, told me and the other employees that, starting today, we worked for them now. They had bought the business and today was the closing. I'm floored. I saw it coming, but I am floored. I know the business is doing very well (I see the numbers) so it's not out of hardship or necessity. These two new owners proceed to tell us all the new rules, changes in store hours, schedule changes, payroll changes, so on and so forth...I mean they are just laying it on thick and with nooo mercy. My husband has a weird rotating schedule and I've been able to also have a rotating schedule to match his (oh hey, thanks to working for a small business!) Guess who can't do that anymore? They own 14 other business in the exact same field and act very much wealthy corporate assholes. My boss just stood there looking guilty. I'm absolutely floored. I feel like I am cow being sold right along with the barn, completely expendable and with absolutely NO warning (except my own perceptions but he told me he wasn't selling & I trusted him!). Yes yes I know it's business and not personal but jeesh, I feel a part of this place, I've put my heart and soul into every one of the 16,000 HOURS I've worked here, so it really feels personal. I helped make this place successful! Husband and I are at a point financially where I can quit this job and start anew (I have at least 3 other options doing exactly what I do now - I'm licensed and certified and I know what I'm doing). Should I quit? Just based on merit alone? How can I get them to fire me? (haha partially kidding) Small business owners: just how valuable ARE your most valuable employees? Am I just being overly sensitive and need to just get over it? /endrant. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 03:56 PM PST Title pretty much says it all. All of the accounts are very loyal to our company and we have been providing service for them for at least 10 years. (Some close to 20). The accounts I'm looking at selling to another company gross me about $350-400k per year. The volume is around 700~ containers per year. What would be the best way to go about this? My lawyer and CPA suggested I ask for $20-30 per container for 4-5 years and help out with the transition for the duration. The problem I see coming up though is how much to actually ask. $20-30 is just a placeholder they put in for me and they said I could really ask as much as I want but I don't want to make it seem like I'm ripping this other company off. The other company is agreeing to keep 2 of my employees and keep them at the customers I give them. This would make the customers and my current employees happy because nothing changes besides the company name. On top of this I will be renting out a yard where I park the trucks and containers to the other trucking company giving them storage that they need since they are located much further away for the ports than I am saving them $30 every day they store a container at my yard instead of a local container storage facility. The yard is owned by me so there are no costs for owning it besides property taxes and insurance for the trucks parking there. How can I come up with a fair price? Is asking $30 per container for 4 years with yard rent included in the $30 pushing it? Should I charge less per container and then a flat fee for renting the yard? For example $20 per container and $750 per month to rent the yard? Or is it better to ask for a lump sum and take payments monthly for X months? I'm planning to go back to school and finish a degree in computer science so any money I get from this deal allows me to live somewhat comfortably for the next couple years while I do that. Learning how to run a small business. Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:34 PM PST I may become a partner in a small restaurant and would like to learn as much as I can about running a business as quickly as possible. Does anyone have a good resource or suggestions. I have only a microeconomics 101 level of knowledge on the subject. I like the format of courses at places like coursera and edx, but am having trouble finding anything appropriate. Any suggestions would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 04:55 PM PST I've been selling homemade fashion goods online for a while and I've been approached by a customer wanting to buy my goods wholesale to feature in her brick and mortar shop. Anyone know what licensing do I need to sell to her as a wholesale distributor? I know I have to record her reseller permit info but that's all I know. I live in Michigan. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:12 AM PST I own a t-shirts company that makes personalized clothing for kids. We currently use Shopify as our website host and they have a lot of nice features. One thing we struggle with is keeping up with orders. Because we offer so many different products, we don't always fulfill orders in date order because we will sometimes be waiting on inventory to arrive. My current method of keeping up with details on orders is writing down the date and then all the orders for that date with details beside them in pencil that I can erase. Here's an example: (I make the list vertically in a notepad, I'm just having trouble formatting this post lol) OCT28 /7332 - waiting on correct address /7342 - Ready to fulfill /7344 - waiting on gowns to arrive This is currently working pretty well, but we are opening a storefront soon and I'm worried this won't be an efficient method. If anyone has any tips, tricks, or program suggestions, I'd be happy to hear it! Thanks so much! [link] [comments] |
Looking for 3-4 members for a mastermind/accountability group Posted: 04 Dec 2017 10:34 AM PST We are looking for 3-4 people for our accountability/mastermind group for ambitious entrepreneurs. The mission of the group is bring together, dreamers and doers, to push each other to achieve our wildest dreams. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month using Discord and Google Hangouts from ~ 7:45pm – 9 pm EST (mandatory). We also meet 1-on-1 on alternate weekends informally, to get to know and check in with each other. To give an idea of the group:
I think the best accountability/mastermind relationship happens when you know and trust the other person, as a result regular voice/video chat is necessary. We have 3 hot-seat meetings (where members get time to talk in detail about their long term plans and get feedback) and jointly discuss 1 book on business/self-development on the 4th meeting, every 2 months. We have a 75% attendance requirement (i.e. a minimum of 3 out of 4 meeting on a rolling basis). Members rotate among ourselves, to take on small tasks to manage the group. Please fill out this form, if you are interested: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=fLNjQzxf10-lYZQxMdt4vIC3uQN3FzpDrq1951989lNUQzRaTTlSMEVEMVJJMlZJUVNJVUdTT0U2Sy4u Thanks for checking this out.. and hope you guys have a great week! P.S: This is not a paid group (in terms of $), nor will ever be. [link] [comments] |
Cybersource Won't Stop Billing Posted: 04 Dec 2017 11:15 AM PST I need advice. Used to use Cybersource to bill credit cards. Cancelled the service in August. Cybersource continues to bill our credit card monthly for service fee. Cybersource has stated in e-mails as early as Oct. 4th the account is fully closed and won't bill. Ended up billing in Oct, Nov and BAM again today. They stated on e-mails on the Nov 15th they would refund several months, they still have not. I have been e-mailing them back and forth for 3-4 months now without resolution. There are now 10 different people at VISA/Cybersource on the e-mail chain, not just a single person dropping the ball. Bank of America my credit card company said I'm a little SOL. That unless they stop, I have to dispute each month or shut down my account as if I cancel the card and get a new card, Cybersource will bill that card. I don't want to shut down the account. I called the Cybersource 1-800 and they stated they would e-mail VISA and ask. Which is crazy, that their own support line cannot do anything, they stated I might as well e-mail because it's all the same. I e-mailed that and still nothing. She said there is no phone number for billing related questions even internally. [link] [comments] |

Software/Receipt Printer for Local Family Business? Dad & Uncle are stuck in old ways Posted: 04 Dec 2017 08:53 PM PST Hello everyone, this is my first time posting. A little background real quick, a lot has happened recently & so I will try to make it short. My family owns a small local business, we sell landscaping stone for homeowners, contractors, builders, landscapers, etc. A long with a few small business we have started recently including True Value equipment rental franchise, digital billboard advertising company etc. My dad & uncle (his brother/partner in the business) are stuck in handwriting receipts/their old fashioned ways & can't let go of the stone business to allow it to automate & move on to focus on the other ventures. I am working on getting things going & automating since we have been out of business for approx 2 years because of having to move twice for the city highway expansion & for the state highway expansion. I am looking for a receipt template/software that I can fill in customers info (name, address, phone number), type or select the product the customer is purchasing, type in price, & have it total everything so all I need to do is print & hand it to the customer. I would like to have the tax percentage fixed in it so I do not have to punch it in every time. I have been doing some research here & there & find a lot of website, softwares but nothing exactly what I am looking for. I am wanting something I can play around with before committing to a service or purchasing. Preferably something I can have on 2 or 3 computers that will be stationary but if I can access it anywhere that would be great too. I have looked at using a simple Excel template where I can print 2 receipt copies, have the customer sign the company copy & they take their copy. I can then just put the printed company copy in a basket I can give to the accountant at the end of the month. I do not need anything super fancy, just simple & straight forward. This would just be for the stone business. Any input/suggestions would be great. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 06:29 PM PST Hello! Let's have a contest! Winner gets $75bucks. No BS. I have clothing and skateboards, but i need help with a catchy or "cool" brand name. I feel having a solid name and logo is one of the most important things for a brand, as it is the first line of contact with your customers! I'm not a very good person when it comes with names so that's where you come in! Post as many as you want and if I like it you win. Thank you If I pick your name I'll give you $75 either check or PayPal [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 06:18 PM PST I'll be heading into my 3rd full year of business and would like to understand if it makes sense to make any changes to the way I'm currently incorporated to take the most advantage of the new GOP tax bill that the Senate just voted on. I'm the only full-time employee and pay part-time subcontractors that want to earn extra cash. I do plan on having one other full-time employee within 1-2 years. Should I convert to an S-Corp or stick to being an LLC incorporated in MA and continue to dump extra cash into a SEP-IRA? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 05:10 PM PST I am trying to control the level of noise at my business. It's a restaurant where the majority of my customers are here for lunch however it can get quite loud as my place isn't as spacious with low ceilings but I have around 12 tables. Would sound proof foaming help on the walls? [link] [comments] |
How to structure a price increase for service? Posted: 04 Dec 2017 03:11 PM PST Long story short here. My father owns his own small business (landscaping and lighting design for homes). For the past 20 or so years, he hasn't raised his overall price for maintenance and small job projects (things like yard work and other month to month jobs he does). He'd like me to get a letter written for all of his current customers about a price increase. I'm trying my very best to structure and word this correctly, without offending any of his customers. Most of his customers I am sure will understand and cooperate but I'd like the letter to be as professional as possible! Any help you guys can give will be amazing! [link] [comments] |
Feeling stuck. How do I start moving again? Posted: 04 Dec 2017 11:20 AM PST I work at a small IT-service company. My bosses say I have a talent when it comes to talking with customers, finding the right products for them, and making them understand why they need it. Together with recently being promoted from a technician to sales, I also got the responsibility to make an easy to use program to increase the overall sales of the company, as well as finding better solutions for some of our current services, and redesigning the company website for both SEO and user experience. To summarize my current state: I'm working my butt off, and have been for the last three years. Since I started the company results have increased by 20% and customer feedback is better than ever. Being a 7-people-company, every person can make a huge difference, however, recently it has felt like I'm the only horse running, while everyone else is sitting back in the carriage and enjoying the ride. I have still not gotten any increase in pay, except the normal, small, yearly increase, since I started. Even though I got promoted I only gained a title and more responsibility, no increase in pay. If I stay in the company I could probably keep the good trend going and increase everyone's overall pay, however, being the last to join the ranks it seems I'm the last to get a piece of the cake too. Currently my pay is about 66% of nation average. My co-workers have 50-100% larger pay than I do. I'm considering starting my own company, and I know my dedication and knowledge will get me somewhere, but fear is my biggest problem right now. As I write this I get more and more sure what I want to do but I'm here to ask for guidance. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
Does anyone have a good delivery scheduling software/program that they'd recommend? Posted: 04 Dec 2017 11:11 AM PST I'm looking for something a little more advanced than Google Calendar for our delivery system. Google worked great, but now as deliveries increase it's time for a new system. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 02:26 PM PST I'm hoping you nice people could help me by reviewing my website and give me advice please I have done everything I can think of to drive traffic to my site but nothing is working and getting no sales. [link] [comments] |
I have an employee trying to milk me for workers comp in SoCal. Posted: 04 Dec 2017 10:35 AM PST He slipped on water and has been off work for a month because his back still hurts. He's been going to the ER or clinics for pain medication. It wasn't a hard fall. It's on video tape. I offered to pay him 40 hours a week instead of going through workers comp, but he refused. Anyone know what I should do and how to prepare for what might happen? [link] [comments] |
How do I dissolve a my small business? Posted: 04 Dec 2017 07:56 AM PST Apologies in advance. The title is a bit misleading and I expect this entire post comes across as self-pitying and defeatist. My dad is a small business owner in a small rural town. My dad is not very good at being a business owner. He is good at providing the business' service. However, he lacks passion/expertise for managing/growing the business. Both the town and the business have been dwindling for years. My dad has lost money on this business and I think he should leave before he loses more. But I don't know what "leaving" actually entails. I doubt my dad does either. Where can my dad get advice on how to dissolve the business? How can I broach this topic with my dad without being an impertinent asshole? [link] [comments] |
Looking for help with marketing Posted: 04 Dec 2017 01:33 PM PST I run a weird business and I want to market to two different main groups, neither of which I've been successful in communicating with. Lot's of "Well, not quite that, in fact I do this..." or "Oh I do offer this service you say you're sad I don't offer..." It's really difficult for me to keep it all straight and clearly communicate such a weird business. Any free advice/help offered? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 01:03 PM PST Goodmorning everyone. [18/m] I just started a little side business of selling new phones/electronics etc.. and I was thinking of a way to quickly sell more products, so I decided to look for people to hire. Since it's a side business and I'll mainly be doing cash exchanges, I wanted to draw in as much workers. Here's the pitch: "For everyone item you sell you get 15% of the total value. e.g. iPhone X-$800__15%-$120 I have many suppliers internationally so there will be no shortage of supply, no limit to how much you can sell, or amount of money you can make." Would you guys take this job/side job as someone who is (16-late 20's)?? Thank you very much and have a good day everybody. [link] [comments] |
How do you handle insane Yelp reviews? Posted: 04 Dec 2017 11:42 AM PST Dealt with a customer and somehow spiraled into a crazy Yelp review. There's a bit more than a shred of truth to the review but mostly it's fabrication and insanity. I'm fairly confident if the average person read it, they'd assume the review is made by an insane person but I am concerned that the people skimming looking for service will see the 1 star review and keep looking.
