Anyone else here hate explaining what they do for a living?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 04:34 AM PST

I have huge anxiety around the question "What do you do for a living?". Sometimes I wish I was just working a basic job so that I could say a simple "I'm an accountant".

But no, whenever someone asks me what I do for a living, I am stuck explaining "Oh, well, I've written a book that I get royalties on, I make YouTube videos where I get affiliate money and ad revenue from, I am a contractor, editing videos for an ad agency, I get royalties on t-shirts I've designed and I'm working on building a video production company" and I'm left trying to explain it all to people that have no idea about anything I'm talking about. It just gets tiring and I end up just feeling like I don't have any direction, even though I know exactly what I'm doing and I've planned it all out.

I don't know what to do. I despise the question "What do you do for a living?". I've started just telling people I'm a video editor and then keeping all the details of my hustle to myself.

Not sure if this is the best way to go about it. Would love some opinions

My experience with The Free Logo on Thanksgiving Guy

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 11:06 AM PST

I reached out to a Redditor named Nick after his "generous" offer to design free logos for those that asked. Ostensibly Nick was offering this to "give back" to the community from "which he takes so much".

Unfortunately, this was actually him taking again, as the real goal was (of course) to get people to check out his business (which I've chosen not to name). This site claims to offer "Unlimited Graphic Design Services", except that they don't offer website design (and probably a bunch of other things). So it's TOTALLY WITHOUT LIMITS, so long as you ask for the work they're willing to do.

After initially asking about logos for three separate projects, he replied and asked which one I would like him to do. I chose the best of the three, and waited. And waited.

The seasons changed, children grew up and had their own children, wars were won and lost, and 7 days later I messaged Nick again with a friendly "Hey just checking in, how's that logo coming?...."

I was not entirely shocked when no reply was forthcoming. I messaged him again, and still nothing. It's been 10 days now.

Hey, but maybe he was away on holiday or something, right? No, he's been posting away on Reddit the whole time, and I even found this gem in one of his helpful posts that just happens to promote his agency:

"Tire-kickers are a very real thing. You're going to have your time wasted over and over again by people that seem VERY serious. You didn't do anything wrong. Some people just like to "play" business rather than actually "do" business."

    Sage advice, Nick!

I considered whether it was really fair to post something negative like this, but ultimately I think people like Nick need to realise if you're going to offer something to this community, don't claim all the kudos and then ignore all the PMs from people you said you'd help. Either deliver on what you say you're going to do, or don't make the offer in the first place.

Did anyone actually get a decent logo from this? How many others asked for one and got ghosted as I did?

I made a shop for people who like to drink and got my first sale!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2017 11:13 PM PST

I've started a couple of businesses in the past couple of years and although I've made a small amount of money from them I had never seen results happen this quickly.

I utilized Shopify & Facebook advertisements to generate my first sale. You can view my shop here

Here's to hundreds more! I'm so excited. I would love to hear other's experiences with Shopify.

Starting an entrepreneur house in LA!

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 12:20 PM PST

    Hi r/entrepreneur,

My roommate and I are longtime Redditors and successful entrepreneurs in our mid 20's, looking for other entrepreneurs to live and learn with. We have done this before and it was an incredible experience, can either be short or long term. Please send me a DM with a little about yourself if interested!

    Thanks, Harrison

I made a game that still gets 500+ impressions daily 3 years after release. What to do?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 01:10 PM PST

I made a game called Stacker for iPhone roughly 3 years ago. I have updated it since then. I haven't really touched it for 2 years now, but it still gets about 500 impressions a day.

At the time I was in the mindset that I could just release a game and if I got lucky it would go viral. After spending the past couple years on different ventures, and talking to any rational entrepreneur, I've realized that is not the case.

I'm wondering what I should do with this game to possibly increase its search rank on the app store, or anything else to give it the best possible way to reach the masses.

Here's the link if you want to check it out! https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stacker/id918973379?mt=8

    Cheers!

    Unsure...

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 12:40 PM PST

I last had a T-Shirt business around a year and a half ago. I was dropshipping with Printful and WooCommerce. I made a couple of sales, but not enough to pay for itself. I had to cut my losses and shut down within a month. I'm planning to reenter with a new business. I have a domain registered and am ready to restart under a different name. Any tips?

What do you listen to, to help you “Zen out” and concentrate more on your idea?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 12:20 PM PST

I'm curious to hear what people are listening to when they're working on their business idea to see if what I listen to is weird or if there is other music out there to help me concentrate!

When I'm doing data collection, working on client stuff, doing something basic like market research or anything that requires a lot of concentration I like to listen to ancient Chinese zen music like the Chinese flute or the Ruan, this is probably because I love history and this era of Chinese history!

    What about you guys?

Secure Cloud Storage for Confidential Documents?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 10:02 AM PST

Can anyone recommend a cloud based storage solution for confidential documents? (Mainly business plans, marketing plans, confidential product information for new items, etc) Currently I just backup everything to a local hard drive, but would love to have something similar to Google Drive where you can store files online and also work on them from any computer that has access. I worry though that these sites don't really offer great security and I run the risk of my documents getting leaked or hacked.

Is cloud storage fairly secure these days? Any recommendations, or should I just stick to working on documents locally? Thanks!

Having a Patent Lawyer review your idea to see if there are any conflicting patents?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 09:47 AM PST

I am building a SaaS solution that incorporates a few different ideas together. I don't know if any elements are patented or if I would suffer from patent trolls in the future. The CIPO (Canadian Intellectual Patent Office) has a database of over 2,000,000 records and I am having difficulty traversing the database to see if there are any conflicts with my SaaS idea.

What is the process of getting a patent lawyer to help you traverse the database and how much would it cost?

EDIT: There is hardware involved. So E.g. using a specific type of RFID chip to track squirrels

Built a startup to help real estate investors, with generating rental statements and revenue/profit analysis. Would love your feedback.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 12:41 PM PST

    Hi r/entrepreneur,

Over the last year I have been building our startup which we just launched about a month ago. It's still has a long way to go, but would love some feedback: https://www.rentexcel.com/

The goal of the product is to automate Rent Statement PDF generation, by using bank export files (OFX and QIF). This is useful for me, as I manage 20 different properties for various owners, and find that updating statements by typing into Excel, a bit of a waste of time.

I have built it mostly due to my background in Property Management and Technology. It does have a painless signup system which does not ask for email verification, and comes with example data to show-case what it can do.

I would appreciate some good feedback, on where to go from here, on how to provide a better product?

I have an Entrepreneur asgmt. in one of my classes. Can I ask anyone a few questions?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 12:30 PM PST

    Hi!

So I'm enrolled in an entry level business class, and we have an assignment to interview an Entrepreneur. Instead of going out, I figured I would have much more luck here.

If any of you are interested, I was wondering if I could get a brief description of your business and how long you have been operating?

As well as nine questions about your business: 1) What inspired you to become an Entrepreneur? Why do you want to be one?

    2) Once you came up with the idea, how soon did it become real? What were some of the key milestones along the way?

    3) How did you finance (raise money for) your venture?

    4) How did you learn about your business before getting started?

    5) What was the hardest part of getting started? Why?

    6) What is the best part of being an entrepreneur?

    7) What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur?

    8) What personal characteristics do you believe are important or essential to being a successful entrepreneur?

    9) Did you prepare a formal business plan before you got started? Do you believe a business plan is important when starting a new venture? Why / why not?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help out. Hope to hear from some of you!

Interviews for a Career Development Course

    Posted: 03 Dec 2017 11:50 AM PST

Hi Y'all! I wanna start with how I frequent this sub often to gain new insight on entrepreneurship and love what some of you guys are doing. I am currently in college and am enrolled in a career development class devoted towards helping students decide what they want to do as their career. I have known that I want to be an entrepreneur since I was 16 while working closely with my boss at my first job. I am only enrolled in this class because it is a requirement for my major. I have successfully started a business in the past that was later sold to an external party.

For my career development class, I am required to interview some people that work in the industry I am most interested in. In my and probably most of your opinions, entrepreneurship is its own industry. It does not need to be defined by the specific industry your business is in at the moment. The interview is short, just about ten questions, and I can conduct it over skype, chat, or email depending on what you prefer. I do not really have anything to offer with this because I am not trying to advertise a business on here, I would just genuinely like to interview some of the successful business owners on this site because there are plenty. This does give you the opportunity to gain experience in being interviewed if you are interested in doing them in the future. Thank any of you who are interested in advance, you are really helping me out!

Edit: If you would rather contact me via inbox, feel free to do so!
