    "There's Always Embezzlement in Auditing"

    "There's Always Embezzlement in Auditing"

Okay, I've been dying to talk about these statements with you all day, OK? Contra asset, this name keeps coming up over and over again. Everyday! I'm getting stacks of invoices from Revenue for bills from sushi dinners and sweetish massages from San Francisco. Contra accounts. Expensed to Total Assets?! So I look into the bills. This whole box is sushi and cash spoilage. Cash Spoilage! So I say to myself. I gotta follow these sign offs! I gotta go up to his office and see the sushi in the guys God damn hands! Otherwise, This guy will keep sending me bills and keep making the debt-ratio go up. So. I go to find where the payments are coming from and you know what I find out? What do I find out! There is no income stream! The account does not exist, okay? So I decide, "Oh shit buddy I gotta dig a little deeper." There's no income? You gotta be kidding me! I got boxes full of credited asset accounts! All right. So I start marching my way down to Carol or Cheryl in Audit and I knock on her door and I say, "Carol? Cheryl! I gotta talk to you about these "audits!" I open the door. And what do I find? There's not a single Cash Auditor in the whole office! There...is...no...Cash....Audit.

What is the most innocent thing you've heard an intern/first year say?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 07:14 PM PST

Story is a couple months old, but just remembered it. I was talking to an intern about eating time (and why not to do it). When I asked her what she thought eating time was, her reply was, "is it the charge code you use when you eat lunch?"

does anyone else go to firm christmas parties alone?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 07:20 PM PST

This is my first party since joining the firm back in March.

Will people look at me funny for not having a +1? None of my friends fit into an accountant crowd. I have no SO because all I do is work.

A seating plan would save my ass but I highly doubt there is one. I already confirmed my solo attendance so even if I have a last minute panic attack and bring my bro it'd be rude.

Serious post by the way. pls no bully

[PSA] New Grads BEWARE! Small CPA firm tried to pull a fast one on me...

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:00 PM PST

I've interviewed at a number of smaller local CPA firms in my area and found out that they were mostly offering a dollar above minimum wage. It's rough being a new grad here on Canada's west coast. So one day I finally received an offer from one of the firms that promised a slightly above average salary and reasonable probation period during the interview. When they prepared the formal employment contract for me to sign the terms did not reflect what was promised before. I found it very disturbing that they would hope that you don't read the contract before signing and screw you over.

TL;DR = Read your employment contracts very carefully before signing!!!

Does anyone else make pro's and con list with excel sheets?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 11:24 AM PST

Currently trying to decide on which job offer I should take for the spring semester and my first instinct was to go to excel to make a pro/con list. I was with a friend who is an art major and she laughed at me for doing this. I proceeded to laugh at her for not having any offers to begin with.

Edit: Wow thanks for all the responses. I thought I was the only one who does this because I'm a bit of an excel nerd. But turns out I'm still a noob who has to step up his excel game. Thank you to all the people who talked about using a weighted function. That's exactly what my spreadsheet was missing.

How long did it take before you could do returns without help?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 11:37 AM PST

Tax intern here. Been kind of going through a internlife crisis where I'm not sure I'm learning fast enough.

How long did it take for the individual returns you prepare to stop having mistakes?

I have ~2 mo experience and my returns still have all these little errors that are tiny mistakes but still matter a lot. Transposition errors for example. And where I don't know the tax law AND I also don't know where to enter it into the software anyways or why something is entered somewhere. Everyone helps me and explains stuff to me but I still feel dumb.

I have problems understanding estimates and calculating them and projections too. Are these common hurdles for interns?

I started learning taxes 3 months ago, I literally knew nothing hadn't even filed my own return ever before I just want to make sure I'm learning fast enough, what do you guys think? Should I be making mistakes still? I mean it's been 2-3 months...seems like a long time.

Supporting info: I've prepared roughly 15-20 returns so far All 1040s 10 have been easy and progressively harder, then the other 5-10 were the hardest returns in the office. Good learning experience, however. It is a regional firm so hardest returns are probably not the same here as B4 but still.

I it considered B.S. Accounting > CPA with non-accounting degree?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 06:41 PM PST

Hi all, I have a question. I work at a small local CPA firm, and twice now they have told me that a guy that works there (about the same amount of time as me) is getting the better accounts because "he's a degreed accountant". I have a bachelor degree in a non-accounting field, but I'm almost ready to apply for CPA candidacy. He hasn't done any education past his bachelor degree. Granted, I'm not actually a CPA (so the title above isn't totally accurate), but I have taken all the courses to be one, but still need to do the testing and complete the work hours needed for the California CPA. They keep telling me they're happy with my work. I'd understand if they just thought he deserved it more, but they use the excuse that it's his degree. The office manager (owner's wife) even said today, "It's because you don't have a degree." She knows I have a B.A. so I thought that was kind of rude.

Anyway, what are your thoughts? Does his being a "degreed accountant" far outweigh my education?

Edit: Title is supposed to say "is it"... writing from cell phone

How important is GPA relative to getting a job in a Big 4 firm ?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 10:26 PM PST

Results not looking good right now, probably can't go to a University and get a degree. Is it feasible for me to graduate with a poor GPA ( cumulative is around 2.8 right now ) and get a job in a Big 4 firm ?

What are the thoughts on starting off in government? And long-term effects?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 11:49 AM PST

Planning to graduate with my MAcc in 2018 and finishing the CPA exam (already passed 3/4 of it). Didn't get any public accounting offers this past hiring season, so I'm probably going to end up at industry or government.

I read through some other threads and government seems really appealing, but after looking at the usajobs.gov postings, it seems like you either have to start at the bottom level or you can't join. Obviously, I'm not expecting big 4 competitive salaries, but call me entitled, I don't think I'd be willing to accept a GS 6/7 position with starting salaries at 35k.

I'm also curious how exactly government jobs are viewed on resumes, if I wish to switch to industry later? I know it's far less weighted than the big 4, but will it still carry some weight or be viewed as not relevant experience?

Graduating shortly, when to start seeking employment?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 09:53 PM PST

Finishing my Bcomm in Acc & Finance on May 1st next year. Wondering when I should start putting my resume out and if I should attach graduating in May or something in my objective so as to not look available immediately ?

Toronto, Canada Intern experience at BDO, no offers to the 6 others I interned with during the 2017 Q1 busy season.

    Thanks for your help!

Effect of shortage of tax professionals

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 05:51 PM PST

Has anyone noticed the effects of the shortage of tax professionals in your workplace or in general?

I hear the shortage with the firms is pretty bad. Things are pretty plush at my firm because the shortage is so severe. I anticipate with tax overhaul and a growing economy for the issue to exacerbate.

Do employers pay for further education?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 03:06 PM PST

For example, right now I'm an undergrad getting my accounting degree with a certificate in data analytics. I'm going to get my master's degree in accounting afterwards. I was thinking I would want to eventually get my master's in data analytics as well. Would this be something that accounting firms would be open to help paying? I know that all the education isn't necessary and I'm getting ahead of myself, but I want to try to plan for future, even if that plan changes. I was also curious about doing online certificates. Thanks

Which parts of CPA exam can be done in a month with just Wiley Books and MCQs?

    Posted: 05 Dec 2017 08:22 PM PST

Is it possible to study for them with only the books and mcqs and pass in a month or less? Has anyone done it? I figure i will read the books once and then go into mc for each section, so that would be 1 week for reading and then 3 for mc.
