    Is accounting worth it?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:10 PM PST

So, I work in the hedge fund industry and I absolutely hate it. I work overtime and don't get to take lunch. This area is so specific I can't even move to a different accounting area. I really wanna quit. But I don't know how to move to a different firm cause my experience is so specific. What should I do?

    Not interning until after graduation?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 06:46 PM PST

I'm double majoring in finance and accounting, scheduled to graduate spring 2019. Because of the double major I am taking at least 5 classes each spring and fall, and about 3 or 4 this summer to graduate on time. This makes interning pretty much impossible. I asked my advisor if it's okay to not intern until after graduation, she said yes but it worries me that I will graduate without an internship lined up or I get one and it doesn't turn full time I'm screwed.

Anyone else here wait until after school to intern? Should I consider dropping the double major (I added it to get closer to the 150) so I can have a lighter load and try to squeeze one in somewhere?

My first check had 16% deducted for taxes, second check had 24% deducted, is this correct? (Full info inside)

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:24 PM PST

I live in NYC and make minimum wage,, My first week of work I worked 15 hours and my check was for $132, after doing the math 16% was deducted for taxes I assume

Second check I worked 40 hours at minimum wage, my check was only for $318, which is like 24% deducted which again I assume is for taxes

After doing the math based on my first check i make about 8.80 an hour after taxes, so my second check should be for $352 not $318, so my questions are

    1. Is this check correct ? Do I pay more taxes or something because I worked 40 hours ?

    2. Is it possible this is malicious and my employer is attempting to scam me ?

What's the best way to do a rate analysis of our rates versus competitors?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:03 PM PST

Hey, apologies for the rookie question, but I'm not an accountant, and I want to give my company information that will help them decide if our rates for professional services are too high for the marketplace.

What I have is a pile of proposals from other companies, including their rates for professional services. I want to present that information to my company in a way that shows how our rates compare overall to other companies.

My challenge is that while I have the rates that we charge for various services (project manager, senior consultant, analyst, et cetera), and the rates of other companies as well, it seems to me that I'm comparing apples to oranges, because the job titles don't match and if one company assigns, for example, a "Senior Analyst" at one rate to a task for 100 hours, and my company assigns a "Senior Consultant," at a different rate, for a different number of hours, I don't know how that should be analyzed. Is there a commonly-accepted way to portray that?

TLDR: I want to provide my company a rate analysis that shows how our professional rates compare with other firms, but I'm worried that I'm getting in WAY over my head.

How can I get over my fear of not being able to handle a job?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 11:11 AM PST

I'm an Assistant Controller right now. I did 3 years in public and I've been in this position now for 5 years. It's time (and has been time for the past 1-2 years), to find something new. But I feel like I still lack experience in a lot of areas since my audit days were mostly not for profits, and my stint in private has been at a corporate office (so no operations, moreso consolidation and 10-Q and 10-K stuff, but also closing the books for the corp office).

I saw a job posting that I'm really interested in for an Accounting Manager. There were a few things on the job description that I felt like I would need training/help on. This happens all the time - I see something I like but talk myself out of it because I feel like I won't be able to handle it. Throw into this the fact that I have a little bit of social anxiety and also worry that I won't fit into the culture.

I feel like the higher up I try to go, the more I feel like I won't have any help if I need it. and the more I feel like my social anxiety will be a hindrance. and I know I've asked this question before, but I'm just worried i'll be in a position where I get stuck on something or a project, and who would I go to? I feel like I will be in a position where I have to handle it myself.

how do I get over this fear?

Should I list a failed app developing experience on resume?

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:08 PM PST

During the summer of my freshman year, I made an app for a niche local community. It got 12000 initial downloads but quickly died down. I hired local promoters, did Facebook marketing, etc.

Should I list this on my resume for big 4 recruiting next year?

[HW Help] Calculating market interest rate and FV on bond

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:32 PM PST

"A company issues 20-year bonds paying a 5% stated rate and receives $626,028 upon issuance. The bond pays annual interest and are issued when the market interest rate is 2%. What is the FV of the bond?

I'm using a financial calculator but I'm not sure how to do this since we don't know what the PMT is on the bond.

"On Jan 1, 2018, Blank Inc issues $1,000,000 FV, 30-yr bonds with an annual stated rate of 8%. Interest is paid semi-annually on 6/30 and 12/31 and the companies received $1,276,756 upon issuance. What is the (annual) market interest rate at the time of issue?

Once again, if I plug in my givens (PMT, FV, PV, periods) into my calculator, I get an error when solving for interest.

    Any help would be appreciated!

When and what type of job to seek

    Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:26 PM PST

I've been working in an AP/AR position for the last year and a half. I got my BA in 2007 in History, but I've started classes in accounting at city college online. My previous GPA was not spectacular, primarily bc I was not career oriented and didn't have motivation. I am trying to keep a solid 4.0 in all relevant courses, that way if there are questions about my past experience, I'll have some evidence that I'm not in the same position and that I'm taking things seriously this time around. I'm ultimately looking to get a CPA, and I'll have the hours very soon, but I need about 40 hours of accounting in total. My question is: when is it appropriate to seek out a job with more responsibility that's higher up the chain? I don't think I'd leave my current position until I've done at least tax and both intermediate courses.

That being said, I had 0 business experience prior to this position, and I had no difficulty adjusting to and learning the work (office politics are another thing). Could this be seen as an advantage by a prospective employer?

    I appreciate any feedback.
