Is there any benefit to an insurance plan that pays a dollar for every dollar premium paid? Why not just invest or save the money?

    Protective Life Insurance?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 09:37 PM PST

I found an agent (recommended by someone at work) for a 20 yr term life insurance. He came back with a quote from Protective Life Insurance.

Does anyone know anything about these folks?https://www.protective.com

One concern is that in their financials they have (in $1000s):

    • Total Income 5,200,812
    • Net Premiums Written 2,378,758
    • Earning Before Dividends and Taxes -344,015
    • Net Operating Earning -235,298

Is it a red flag that earnings are negative?

Leased car totaled. Lease overpaid by a month. Refund possible?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 06:40 PM PST

First off, this is in California and my insurance provider is AAA.

I have been leasing this car for about 20 months and, as a rule, I round up on my payments so, if things are tight one month, I can reduce or skip that month's payment. As a result, I'm ahead on my lease by over a month's worth.

The car was totaled, at clear fault of the other driver, over a week ago and now the insurance person is telling us that all we can get back is taxes (not sure what taxes, specifically). But that I can't get any extra that I paid into the car back. Since the insurance company is covering the value of the car as of the accident, it sounds like someone is getting out ahead with my money. Is there any way I can get that back?

Person who hit my car lives down the street - Do I attempt contact?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 03:46 PM PST

I live in Milwaukee, WI and I was in a car accident in mid-August of this year. I was at a stop sign and attempting to make a right hand turn. I was slowly making my turn (a garbage truck was blocking my view) when a man suddenly hit the back left of my car. In WI, I am not responsible for any portion of the damage if someone hits the back of your car (not my fault). We pulled over and he was apologetic and gave me his information and insurance materials. This happened 2 blocks from my house. I went home and began calling my insurance and his. Long story short, his insurance expired (despite them telling me at first he was covered) and I paid a 500 deductible for repairs.

My insurance told me that they would be pursuing him to get the money back, but that I need to be patient as it can take months or longer. It has been 4 months and no word or update from my insurance. I no longer have his number (lost it), but him and his family live right down the street from me. He never returned my calls when I wanted to attain the money personally and I'm wondering if I should attempt to get it now knowing he lives right by me. Is this wrong? What would pros/cons be? Is this illegal?

tl;dr Person who hit my car, causing me to pay a 500 deductible, lives right down the street. He hasn't tried to pay up, so should I attempt to connect in person to retrieve the payment?

Debris hit car. Am I at fault?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 05:02 PM PST

I was driving on the freeway and a car passed me and went into my lane. The wind from him passing and going into my lane lifted a mat that was laying on the road. It was unavoidable and could've been worse if I attempted. It was upright when I hit it and damaged my grille and radiator.

I have full insurance on the vehicle. Will this raise my insurance?

    Sr22 insurance help.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 04:41 PM PST

I am in need of sr22 insurance. I was quoted $120 A month for minimum state liability. I had a motorcycle hit me in 2010, and was on my mom's insurance. Or so I thought. It had lapsed. I paid a $750 no insurance ticket, and I was sued by the guys insurance company. They got $7,800 dollars, and the judge gave me 14 years of SR22. I paid the fine off recently after years. My insurance has been about the same since. Last year I was heading to a friends and got pulled over. I didn't have my wallet on me and got cited with a failure to provide license. Paid a ticket and was good. Still not sure why I was pulled over. The woman who gave my quote said I got 4 points for that ticket. Im not sure what that means, but it sounds bad. Those are my only infractions in 13 years. I was going through a quote today and they quoted me the 120 and I have to wait 2-3 weeks for them to file the sr22, or 135 and the other company will file instantly. The 135 is a 6 month while the 120 is a year policy. I feel like I'm paying a lot here. Is this normal?

Backed into a car in a parking lot. They only took my phone number?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 09:45 PM PST

    I'm a college student. California.

I was backing out of a spot in a super small parking lot. I looked behind left and saw clear, and behind right I saw a car who I thought was idling for my spot. I'm a dummy and thought "this parking lot is so small (less than 12 spots, one-lane traffic) there must be room behind me because that car is waiting for me" And I proceeded to back up and yeah, hit a car that was waiting for the spot next to mine (who wasn't even leaving, they were just smoking). Yes I'm aware I'm a dummy.

Apparently she didn't see me (which is why she didn't honk) and I dented her driver's door. The paint wasn't scratched, just a substantial dent, but it looked like it could be popped out. She was really nice and I asked if she was ok. I asked if it was okay if I just paid for the damages out of pocket (yanno cuz...insurance is expensive) and I gave her my number and my name (and in my panic...forgot to ask for hers. Cuz I'm dumb and panicked.) I asked if she wanted to see my license and registration/insurance but she said it was ok and she'd get it from me later? She was also a college student.

Anyways I feel really bad about hitting her but also I'm worried that I messed up and did something illegal. Help?

    Musical Instrument Coverage

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 05:45 PM PST

    Hello insurance pros.

A question sprung to mind and I was curious if it was something worth looking into.

I have about $4500 in gear and my band is planning on touring in CA this coming March and I often hear stories about bands getting robbed on the road. I'm curious if there are options for insuring instruments and what that looks like. I know $4500 isn't huge but it's also nothing to sneeze at should some jerk decide to take my gear.

I know HO is a possibility but I know the deductibles are so huge it's almost not worth it. I also know that usually they won't cover something like that. I also know surplus lines are a thing but I don't imagine that is something musical instrument gear would qualify under.

So my question, are there companies that offer "instrument coverage"? What parameters do they use to asses risk? A quick google search gave me some places but there's no telling what's legit or not, is there a particular company that would work?

For what it's worth, I'm also in AZ.

Car is a write-off but I feel they're lowballing me

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 07:44 PM PST

    [Ontario, Canada]

This is actually an accident my boyfriend was in. He was T-boned by another car who was trying to beat traffic and make a quick turn. He was deemed not at fault for the accident. The insurance says his car is a write off and are offering him $6200 for his 2012 Kia Forte with about 90,000 km. He feels the car is worth more than that so he's been looking at similar car listings and they're all around 9k-12k. The appraisal values the car at $9000 so we're just trying to understand why he's getting so little for it. This is his first accident and we're pretty new to this.

My insurance company says I was found at fault and that they can't give me anything in writing. Competitor insurance company says I was not at fault.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 08:23 AM PST

9 months ago I was involved in an accident. I did not feel like my insurance agent had my best interests in mind so I told him so, which led to an argument and me being told that "the liability decision will most likely be made once the claim has been referred to arbitration for a final and binding decision." I reached out 5 months after that and was told it would be heard in early November. The agent never reached out to me with the results.

I am shopping around for quotes right now and got a quote from a competitor. Underneath the section titled "Accidents, Violations and Losses", the accident from 9 months ago is listed as "Accident - not at fault".

I reached out to the agent and requested an update. He told me I was found at fault and that it was a binding decision. I told him that was fine, but I would need something in writing informing me that the decision was made. He told me he would call back shortly. The next day, he called and left my a message saying that they were not authorized to release any documentation of the arbitrator's decision.

I am not sure how to proceed. It looks like I am sticking with this insurance company since I am priced out of other potential options. I can't stand this guy as I don't believe he has my best interests in mind, and I highly doubt he made much of an effort in regards to my case. I am not sure if I should call back and inform him I've received a quote saying I was not at fault and that I would need something in writing, or if I should just go straight to the Massachusetts Division of Insurance. Any advice out there?

[CA] For auto insurance, is all points worth the same?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 06:00 PM PST

    Hi guys,

So I got 2 tickets within a span of 10 days.

One was a stop sign ticket for not stopping completely (I hate that this is a traffic violation though it is my fault). I paid the fine, and signed up for traffic school, but haven't done it.

Then I got a ticket for crossing the double yellow lines.

I'm wondering if there's any way to do the traffic school for crossing the double yellow line as it seems more severe, instead of for the stop sign.

Will it even make a difference in my future premiums?

    Thanks for reading!

    Medical Insurance (Miscarriage)

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 01:48 PM PST

    Hi,

First of all thanks for helping me in advance. So situation is this. Long story short, my wife had a miscarriage in 2015. A month ago hospital contacted us stating that the insurance got denied. (Not sure why it took almost 2 years to deny our insurance) We filed an appeal and we received the result today. Appeal got rejected. It says that "The inquiry included a description from the insurance plan stating complications of the pregnancy would be covered; however, the description of the diagnosis billed on the claim is incomplete spontaneous abortion without complications."

My understanding is complications of the pregnancy means all kind of miscarriage. But it seems like the insurance got denied because my wife miscarried without complications? which I don't understand. Isn't miscarriage already a complication of pregnancy?

I'm so frustrated now. My wife is pregnant now and the baby is due in 2 weeks. However this freaking insurance company will only talk to my wife and my wife can't handle this stress now. Hospital is calling us to get the money.

The insurance also told us that we already exhausted all the right to appeal.

Can you please help me what kind steps and procedure I can take at this stage? Should I get a lawyer or something? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Car accident: board of appeal finds me no more than 50% at fault; insurance company finds me 100% at fault. Is that possible?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 10:27 AM PST

So I was involved in an accident where insurance company found me 100% at fault. I paid for the car repair and appealed it. The Board of Appeal found me not at fault and the surcharge is being reimbursed, now the insurance company say for them I'm still at fault and they won't reimburse the car repair. Does it make sense?

Can insurance agent ask for age of water heater?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 06:44 AM PST

I am buying a home in Florida. I've been working with a homeowner's insurance agent to get quotes from different carriers. He works for a very positively reviewed company. When we initially started the quote process he asked some general questions about the home, such as age and type of roof, age of water heater, age of A/C unit, etc. I thought these were normal questions.

The water heater in the home is 28 years old. My agent feels that many of the carriers he works with will want us to replace the water heater, possibly within 30 days of closing. With this information in mind, I asked my real estate agent about requesting a $500-$1000 repair credit to help us with the water heater replacement, as well as some minor dry rot.

My real estate agent came back telling me that our insurance agent should NOT be asking for that information and we should maybe find a new agent.

Is this true? They seemed like pretty normal questions to me...

    Policy/Contract Question - Renters Insurance

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 10:45 AM PST

I want to preface this by saying this is likely a very newbie question.

I'm currently shopping around for renters insurance. I've noticed that most companies will not provide me a full copy of a sample contract so that I understand what their exact terms and conditions are until I accept the quote. So far only one company has given me access to a sample contract to consider before accepting their quote. The other two I have spoken to have said that I need to accept and pay before I can see the full terms and conditions of their insurance policy.

Is this normal for insurance companies? Is it industry standard for insurance companies to only confirm the coverage amounts and the deductible, and nothing else until I accept their quote? If so, is there a reason why that's become standard?

I want to ask because, as someone who works in contracts and legal agreements, I'm surprised I have to pay before I can see a sample contract. Every industry is different I guess. It just seems sneaky to me.

Having a planned surgery in 2018. Using my employer medical insurance to cover the cost but should I wait until 1/1/18 before I pay anything so it goes into that year's deductible?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 02:24 PM PST

My enrollment period for medical insurance was this week and I just choose to continue to use the same medical plan. The new plan is not 'effective until 1/1/18' (the new plan is exactly my old plan). Are all my deductible payments in 2017 erased when 2018 starts?

I need to do and pay an initial consultation fees to see doctors. Should I wait until 2018 before doing these consultations?

    Thanks reddit!

Cyclist who was hit and deemed not at fault 1 month ago. Haven't filed a claim yet, but have received a claim number from the driver's insurance?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 02:01 PM PST

    Hi all.

To begin, I'm in Massachusetts and the driver's insurance is Liberty Mutual. I was struck by a car last month while dismounted from my bicycle on the shoulder of the road. The police report says I am completely not at fault. Medically, I am fine but my bike is damaged. I have had the damage estimated by a bike shop and it is about 250$.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the next step is. I figured I'd call the driver's insurance and file a claim, but I just received a letter in the mail saying that I have a claim number and an adjuster is looking into my case and I should give them a call. I didn't file a claim, does this happen automatically? Should I give this adjustor a call? Also, they sent over all of these forms about my health insurance and if I've been on medicaid etc. Do I need to fill these out and mail them back if I'm not looking for medical compensation? I just want the cost to repair my bike. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just a goob and miss bicycling.

    Thank you

I bumped into a car in the parking lot. No visible damage. She does not want to go through insurance.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 10:09 AM PST

Ok so I'm new to Reddit. I bumped into someone in the parking lot. This happened 3 weeks ago. The person said she doesn't want to go through insurance. At first being naive I said ok. Well today she calls me....again reemphasizing....3 weeks later and said that she wants to get it fixed today it will be an estimated $50. I honestly don't even think any damage to her vehicle happened. If it did then yes I'm an honest person and want to pay to fix it. I'm thinking though I want to go through insurance because what if she's trying to rip me off since there was no damage visibly that I can see. At the same time, I feel like if I do go through insurance it's going to be super expensive and my rates will go up. Ok thanks for any answers. Sorry if I seem like an idiot...I've been driving since I was 16 and now am 26 and have never had anything like this happen....so this is why I seem clueless. Also sorry if this is poorly written, my phone is not that great and I'm trying to write this in a rush.

Car broken into - need help!

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 01:44 PM PST

    Hello Reddit.

2017 HRV window shattered and laptop stolen. Deductible is $1,500 with insurance.

My question is - does the restaurant it was parked at have an MY liability here? They mentioned they would send a report to their corporate office. Would it be worth it to try and file a claim with the restaurant? (Large chain)

Any advice? (We are desperate and financially limited)

    Thanks!

Car accident advice?: Person who was at fault offering to pay for my repairs, but I had already started a claim

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 01:12 PM PST

This morning I got into an accident with a car turning left at an intersection as I had the right of way. She was driving her husband's car but is not on the policy. He called me an hour later asking if he can pay for the repairs and not go through insurance. I had already started filing a claim online before he called. Never finished the process but they assigned a claim number.

Would it be advisable to not go thru my insurance and have him pay for repairs? Are there any legalities I need to be aware of? (I am in California)

If yes to that and my insurance has a claim # started, is it bad to call and cancel the claim?

It's been years since I was in an accident and not really sure of the best way to go. Any advice would be appreciated

    Florida renters insurance question

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 09:04 AM PST

Hi, I'm shopping for apartment insurance in Florida, and it's just one horror story after the next. Is anyone happy with renters insurance here who's actually had a claim paid for something like theft, which is the main thing I'm worried about? The top JD Powers ranked places don't take Florida zip codes for quotes, even AARP gives an error if you put a Florida zip code, but will work for any other location. I checked with our auto insurance and they job it out to a nightmare place with hundreds of detailed complaints. I don't want to get it from a place that won't honor a claim, has anyone had a positive experience with any place that serves Florida renters?

Other driver at fault but they won't cooperate with their insurance company. What do I do?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2017 08:52 AM PST

I was in a car accident. The other driver ran a red light. My car was totaled. I also had to spend a few days in the hospital. I now am in PT for my hip and knee.

It's been about a month and the other driver's insurance has been unable to get in contact with him.

Apparently, based on searches in here and on google, this is a common thing and the only real recourse is suing the other driver.

Can anyone with experience in this please comment? I want to resolve this as soon as possible and I also want to be compensated for my vehicle and PT.
