My Venmo/Gmail was hacked. What do I do now? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:56 AM PST At 5AM this morning, my phone started blowing up with notifications for codes confirming my password resets for Venmo, followed by password resets for my google account, and then a notification from Verizon saying my Verizon messages account was being accessed from a location from the other side of the country. This all happened in a span of about 5 minutes. Fortunately I was already awake at this point, and I quickly got on the computer and was able to log into all my accounts and change the passwords and confirm I was not the one making the changes. I got email notifications that 2 bank accounts from a bank I don't even use had just been attached to my Venmo. I immediately removed them from my account. Besides the 2 bank accounts that had gotten attached to my Venmo, it doesn't seem like anything else was compromised. I'm still a bit shaken though and am worried there may be more to come. I haven't been able to get in contact with any support because of the time. What steps should I take now to keep myself safe? Update: I was able to contact Verizon's fraud department and they said because it didn't look like the hacker compromised my Verizon account, there was nothing they could do for me. They suggested I contact Google. I told them the hackers were somehow able to look through my device and my text messages because whenever you have to reset a password for Gmail, they send you a confirmation code to your phone, and the hacker was able to see and use that confirmation code because he had access to my text messages. Verizon repeated what they had told me and to contact google. However, I can't seem to figure out how to actually speak to an agent at Google. Update #2: To answer a few questions. The timeline was over a span of 5 minutes: Get a text from Verizon saying someone has access to my messages/devices in this city at 4:51AM. Receive text confirming password change for my gmail. Receive text confirming password change for my Venmo. I change my gmail and Venmo passwords. Notice 2 new bank accounts attached to my venmo, and I remove them. All activities cease. I'm a super broke student, so it's not like I have any real value in my venmo, so I wouldn't be missing much. I just feel vulnerable which sucks. [link] [comments] |

Google Finance and Portfolios Officially Dead Posted: 29 Nov 2017 06:33 AM PST If you go to google.com/finance you're now brought to a dashboard that's integrated with the look and feel of Google search. I don't like it so far after playing with it a bit. Anyone who used Portfolios and want to stay with Google I'd recommend using Google Sheets and building your own. I have a template I can share with you that you can use to start from, but it's pretty easy to get something thrown together using the Google Sheets GOOGLEFINANCE() function as it has all of the parameters necessary for building your own dashboard. I can't post the link as links to Google "Dox" are forbidden. Edit 1 ~ Looks like https://finance.google.com still works with bringing up old interface and portfolios, but https://google.com/finance goes to the new interface. Edit 2 ~ Links to Google Docs are allowed after all. Here's the link to the Google Sheets I created using an anonymous account that you can copy to your own account and make changes: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YOofnAStA0Bij6-jmG_U3kMnE6ZwlBzHtm7V2D-xmDI [link] [comments] |
Wife had secret large student loan on forbearance, what do I do? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:35 PM PST Getting stressed out here and hoping for some advice on how to proceed. I just found out my wife has a large consolidated student loan I didn't know about that she has been repeatedly putting on forbearance for years. The total amount is close to $100k and what I have been able to figure out so far monthly payments would be over $500 when they kick in for well over 20 years. Problem is that I make decent money ($85k) but with a new mortgage, a kid in school and credit card debt we are more or less breaking even each month already. With my income i can't imagine I qualify for economic hardship or similar. Wife makes some money but she mostly does home schooling with our daughter and some intermittent contract work. We aren't indulgent by any means, but we would still like to be able to do some things like eat out once a month, go on vacation once a year, etc. We just don't know what our options are to get in front of this since at some point soon they are going to deny any more forbearances. Oh, and doubtful that it matters but the real kicker is that my wife didn't even finish school, the loans are from multiple places she attended, none of which she graduated from. Thanks for any help!! [link] [comments] |
Parents keep taking money out of my bank account Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:08 PM PST To help you guys understand the situation a little bit better, I am a senior in high school in the midst of the process of applying to colleges. Throughout my high school years I haven't worked too much so I was proud of the $3,000 I had saved up. This was going to be used for car maintenance and the college applications. I spent about $1,000 on a computer and other things that my parents wouldn't buy me that I need for college. The problem is my dad has taken most of the remaining money out of my account to use for bills, mortgage, or whatever else he had to pay for. This leaves me with $305 left over. The problem I have with this is 1) he won't end up paying me back which I honestly don't care about right now and 2) he never told me he was taking the money. He already owes my brother, who is just 3 years older than me, around $7,000. I am currently 17 so my bank account has to be joint but I turn 18 in February. So here's where my questions come in. 1) When I turn 18 how do I go about opening my own account with no one else's name associated with it? 2) Will not having a joint name on the account hurt my chances of getting loans for college? 3) Will having an account that is only associated to me at this young of an age have any negative impact on my future such as different interest rates? 4) Is there anything I should know or any advice that you could give on having my own account? [link] [comments] |
Just got married. Trying to combine finances. How does this plan sound? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:32 PM PST We have our joint checking, a joint checking that reoccurring bills get taken out of and then we have a joint savings. We bring home about $5800 a month. $1200 a month goes to joint checking for bills. This will cover mortgage, utilities, loans, insurance, taxes... $2000 goes to savings. $1000 ($500 each) goes to personal accounts. We can use this to buy whatever without asking the other person. $1000 will go to our joint credit card. This card will be use to pay for fuel, groceries, dinners, household supplies, joint expenses. This will leave about $600 a month in the checking account. This is for vacations, new tires, unplanned expenses or whatever we want to spend it on..... Maybe even put it in savings at the end of the year. Any suggestions or advice? [link] [comments] |
Shoutout to automatic transfers! Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:42 PM PST First post here I just wanted to share something exciting that may help someone in my position. So I'm working full time and paying for my RN degree out of pocket. My husband pays the mortgage and utilities and car insurances and I pay everything else--phones, my car pmt, food, anything for the house, gas, etc, including paying for school. I'm nearly halfway through and I've been paying for school in lump sums at the beginning of each semester. I have a budget of everything I typically spend in two weeks' time (biweekly pay periods) and EVERYTHING else gets automatically transferred into another account until time to pay for school again. I make less than 2K a month, working shit tons of OT on school breaks. I just came here to say that it wouldn't have gone NEARLY as well if I hadn't done the transfers automatically. The money comes out immediately when I get paid and I'm forced to stick to my budget. And now I'm going to graduate with no debt! Yay! [link] [comments] |
23 years old at the end of my rope. Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:23 PM PST (First time posting, not sure if this is the right place.) As the title says I am 23 years old. The last 2 years of my life has seemed like one failure after another and I don't know where to go from here. I guess I'll try to recap what got me here.. not really sure what to expect though. After highschool my family wanted me to attend a year of "Bible college" to give back a year of my life to God and to see if God had any ministry plans for me. (Dad's a pastor and Mom is a very devout Christian lady.) After a year I feel like I wasted my time and money at the college and returned home ready to discover the next challenge in my life. My dad never made much as a pastor so I had to pay for most of the Bible college myself (parents paid upfront and I was on a pay plan to pay them back.) I wanted to attend a secular (normal) University but couldn't afford it while I was paying my parents back so I postponed it, hoping to attend when I paid them back. Fast forward a year after returning from Bible college and I had almost paid back my parents. I was able to land a really good job at a bank working as a teller which I absolutely loved. I was a hard worker and got recognized and promoted 6 months later to the roll of personal banker. I was finally able to pay off the loan I had with my parents but decided to wait on Uni for awhile because I was making good money. I moved out of the house and things were going great (even took a few night courses at my local community college.) After a year and a half of being a banker things started taking a turn for the worse. I was living in a dense city area so I sold my car and purchased a motorcycle (huge mistake I now realize.) It was great, gas was cheap along with almost every other aspect of ownership! Until I took a road trip on my bike to visit a friend a state away. While I was there I was involved in a small wreck which left me pretty banged up which was fine, but I took an ambulance to the hospital and it left me with quite a bit of medical bills. I had insurance through my employer but being a healthy 21 year old of course I chose the plan with a $5k deductible so I was left to pay almost all of the bills myself. Additionaly I missed a few days of work which led my boss (who for some reason always seemed to hate me even though I get along with almost everybody else) to call me into her office when I returned. That morning I had been late by 5 mins (common thing for bankers to show up a few minutes late since all we did before opening was sit in our offices and chat.) Long story short she told me I was no longer employed. Luckily my best friend and his family (the one I visited when I wrecked my bike) were generous enough to let me move in with them while I tried to land myself back on my feet. I worked a few restaurant jobs for the summer and things were looking up (even found the first girl crazy enough to be my girlfriend.) One night I was returning from a new job I just started when someone pulled out in front of me causing me to t-bone them going roughly 45mph on my motorcycle. It didn't turn out to well. Bike was totaled and I went to the hospital with a bizarre injury causing me to miss more work and add thousands to the medical bills. (new job, insurance didn't kick in until 90 days with the company so it was all on me.) My parents purchased a vehicle for me a few days later, which I am now paying then back for. Well that job that I took was selling TV service over the phone. Day after day I took dozens of calls trying my hardest to sell as many as possible. My company was never satisfied. Always pushing harder and harder to sell and trying to dehumanize the callers so we wouldn't be reluctant to sell if someone legitimately couldn't afford/didn't need our product. After a few months my best friend told me he could see it was affecting my attitude and I realized I was miserable. Working insane hours, sleeping 3-5 hours a night if I was lucky, and never feeling like I was succeeding in work or even life in general. After 9 months working there I quit. I remember when I was driving away for the last time the feeling of happiness/excitement that I was finally out of the mud and I where I was going would be so much better! But.. it's not.. in April I started working as a car salesman. I know most people wouldn't think this to be the job that would make you happy, but for my personality it felt right. The first 3 months of training were ok. I saw that it wasn't quite what I had been dreaming about; but, hey! at least I wasn't asking over the phone anymore! Jump to today. I'm sitting at my desk typing this. I feel like I'm broken. Nothing I do seems to turn out. My last hope is attending a coding bootcamp which costs ~$9k. (Software development is what I've wanted to do for a long time so I have a solid idea of what I'm getting into.) I'm making enough money to live, pay bills, have fun, etc. But each month I seem to end with as much money as the last. I need help but I don't know where to start. I often wish my accident would have been worse and just finished me but I immediately regret having that thought. I am struggling with justifying my existence. I just feel like I'm letting everyone down.. especially my parents.. Sorry for the book. If this isn't the right sub I apologise. Thank you to everyone who read this, if anyone feels I am being overly dramatic it is okay, I feel the same way.. but I'm not getting any better so I am willing to try just about anything. Best regards, [link] [comments] |
23 y/o college grad, who could use some advice and direction. Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:39 PM PST First time poster here, so I appreciate any advice that you may have for me. I'm currently 23 years old with a degree in Management Information Systems from a pretty well known Midwest University. I currently work for a bank as a "Systems Administrator". I make around 48k a year, but have around 80k in college debt. My issue with my job is that I don't really do shit. I'm technically department management, but I only do the bull shit admin stuff that my bosses don't want to do (create user guides, clean out the shared department drive, etc.). I live within my means, I drive the car my deceased grandmother left me, and rent a house with some friends. I'm clearly not in a terrible spot, but I cannot stand my job. I am not using any of the skills I learned in school, and I have been unable to get a call back from any sort of places that I have applied to, due to the fact that my work experiences don't really reflect any of my skills. My current employer would pay for me to go back to school, but I would need to cover the cost of the schooling upfront. That would require me to A.) Put up the collateral to get another loan, which I don't think I nor my parents could afford, and B.) I would have to remain in my current position which is painful at times. On top of that, I am not sure what I would want to go back to school for. I could go for my MBA, but I'm starting to believe that maybe getting a Finance degree would be my best option, considering the trouble I'm having finding a job relevant to my education and job experience. I have been doing some investing, both through Acorns and my employer offered 401k, and have a pretty good amount of money saved up. I just don't know what to do at this point, and I can't seem to get any good advice from people these days. Does anyone have any similar experience with this? If so, what did you do? Or what would you do in my spot? I just wanna talk through this with someone, if they're willing. Thanks for your time. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:22 AM PST I have three cards with AMEX that I've developed some good history with, putting large charges on them and PIF before the next billing cycle. Recently though I've been going through some life changes and have been running up close to the limit on my Blue Cash Everyday (the others are not carrying a balance). I've been carrying a balance on it for about three months. I made a large payment on it a few days ago and just last night AMEX cut my credit line on this card to just above the current balance. This is my first time ever having a credit line cut and I have 10 credit cards. They reduced it from $2k to $1,400 so it's not a huge drop but still What's going on here? Someone told me they might continue chasing my credit line down as I keep paying it off, until I barely have a line at all [link] [comments] |
Should I stay with my job until my retirement is fully vested? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 03:10 AM PST I've been with my job for a little over 3 years (in Wisconsin, which apparently has one of the best state retirement systems in the country!) I would say what I have already contributed so far, but we only get a statement once a year. We contribute 6.8% per pay check, I believe that same amount is matched. I've contributed about 3k this year (according to amount on my paystub) The real issues is that I have been thinking about a move back to the Pacific NW in the summer of 2018. I will also hit my 4 year mark then. We are fully vested at 5 years. I'm not very well versed in retirement stuff, and I don't know if it will be worth it to stick around until my 5 year mark or not? EDIT: thank you all so much!! This is all really great advice!! I know I probably need to talk to my ETF rep or HR about this for the small details, but I do feel much better about sticking it out! Y'all rock PF!! ❤️ [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 10:47 AM PST Hi all, please be gentle. I posted here almost a year ago about investing $100k in a risk-averse fashion. I got the typical scolding that I should be in index funds. I immediately followed some of the advice then. I maxed out to $18k in my 4013B. Feel good about that. I moved the $100k to a savings account that earned a little interest. Not good enough. So I'm ready to finally do it. So... How.. all at once into an index fund? Over time into an index fund? There's probably a q&a I should read so if nobody answers I'll search around. Down Payment Wire Transfer Scam Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:14 PM PST Always check the full email from people you are having regular communication with. Almost got convinced to wiring our downpayment for a house to a scammer because it was the same email but at the end was @gmail.com. Didn't notice it right away because it was sent as a response email to one I'd sent to the real address earlier. Everything about the fake was good, same signage knew too much information. Still Too many red flag were up for me to really go through the transfer but i was ready at the bank to "lose it all". Lucky we didnt lose it because we discovered the hack (thanks to asking annoying questions) but I can easily see other people falling for it. I'm pretty steaming right now because of how close it got. If anyone has comments about identifying these emails. Things to for before closing on a house with regards to financing. Or something to get me to calm the F down would be great. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 04:31 PM PST First of all I just want to thank you guys. . If it wasn't for the great advice I would of took my chances with going to the airport. So I wanted to update you guys on what happened, just in case you go through this yourself. So after I read countless comments that it wasn't a federal violation to reinstate my ticket and that the first manager just straight up lied to me. Not only in saying it was a federal violation but also that if I go to the airport they will have a more in depth log to look through (they don't). I decided to call again. I thought maybe dropping names like DHS and DOT would bring faster results. Well I got the manager on the phone a lot quicker than the last time. But that's as far as the progress got. From there on I literally sat on the phone for an hour going back and forth with the manager telling me my girlfriend didn't board the plane. She would use condescending remarks like "A lot of people don't know if you cancel your outgoing flight, then the return is cancelled as well." After I just mention to her that my girlfriend sat right next to me. And when I would say she absolutely did board the plane. She'd remark "well then I can't help you from here if you won't give me the full story." This kind of conversation as I stated before lasted about a hour. It felt at times she was bribing me to lie. If I just tell her the real story then I can reinstate the ticket for $200. I thought about paying the $200 since I was shipping out the next day and I needed piece of mind , but she wouldn't let me until I told her the full story. Stating that the manifest has never been wrong and it says in her system in 3 different spots that she didn't board, and that's never happened Original post if you want to get the full story https://www.reddit.com/r/personalfinance/comments/7fcge5/my_girlfriends_return_flight_was_cancelled/?st=JALPMTQ4&sh=b2bb792c [link] [comments] |
Bank of America telling me I have to prove my identity after 11 years. Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:22 PM PST Bank of America sent me a letter stating that I need to physically go into a BOA financial center to prove who I am or they are going to freeze my account and then cancel my credit card. I live in central Alaska and the nearest center is thousands of miles away. Does anyone know why they would be doing this now? I've never missed a payment, but my credit score went down a little recently. Could this be the reason behind the sudden interest in compliance? Do I have a recourse? [link] [comments] |
[US/CAN] Most efficient money transfer? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:43 PM PST So I'm currently finishing a paid internship in the US and would like to transfer the money I earned (which was deposited on a US bank account) back with me to Canada. I'll be closing the US account shortly, but I wanted to know what would be the best option to perform this transfer. Last time I had to do something similar, I ended up getting a cashier's check (which cost $10), physically carrying it with me across the border and cashing it in at my bank back home, using whatever conversion rate they had at the time. I later figured out that the rate they gave me was a fair bit lower than the ongoing rate at the time, so I figured there'd be some other way of getting a better rate. Since I'm looking at a five figure amount, even very small differences can mean a lot. I'm not looking for something particularly complicated because I'm leaving in a little over a week (last paycheck is coming this Friday, leaving the Friday after that). I want something safe and reliable, even if it's not quite as efficient as a riskier trick. What are my options? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:42 PM PST Good evening PF, I've been an independent contractor since July 2015. I still have all of my receipts from 2015 and 2016. When I first started in 2015 up until almost mid 2016, I lived in the state of Georgia, and then relocated to California. Which state would I claim since I moved almost midway into last year? Does anyone know a good tax advisor who knows how to handle taxes for independent contractors? It's really hanging over my head that I haven't filed in almost 3 years, and I've never neglected my taxes like this. I'm really hoping to get connected with someone who I can work with every year. Thank you for your advice and input in advance. [link] [comments] |
I am annoyed with Wells Fargo reordering or hiding transactions. Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:30 PM PST I know the reason, even though I can't be overdrafted. It's just annoying when I want to see what I have left and they move around transactions and hide some that were posted from a week ago. The moment I can switch to another bank I will. [Auto] First Time Buyer - Financing Questions Posted: 29 Nov 2017 03:56 PM PST At the suggestion of this subreddit, I went around to a couple of credit unions and got loan estimates, and I had a couple of questions: How accurate is the credit score from Chase Credit Journey? One of the credit unions said that, if the dealer offers an incentive for using their financing, I can sign up for theirs and immediately refinance at the credit union. Is that legit? Thanks! Posted: 29 Nov 2017 07:00 AM PST I'm typing this on my phone so I apologize for any errors or formatting issues. Background: Schwab Traditional IRA allocated between various ETFs: $20K - SPDR S&P International Dividend ETF (DWX) - SPDR SSgA Global Allocation ETF (GAL) - Guggenheim S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF (RSP) - Vanguard Total Market Index Fund ETF (VTI) Fidelity 401K in a Vanguard Target 2055 Fund: $21K - $4.8K allocated to Pre-Tax - $16.7 allocated to Roth Ally Savings Account Emergency Fund: $11K I am 25 years old and living by myself. My monthly expenses (rent, internet, electricity, cell phone, gym, etc) are roughly $1,500. I started a new job on 11/1/2017 that has a better 401K % match but my new company utilizes Wells Fargo instead of Fidelity. Below is a list of all available investments for my 401K through Wells Fargo:
My initial question is do I keep my old 401K with Fidelity and just let it grow or do I move it to one of the investments through WF? (Tracking two separate 401Ks is not an issue for me) Next question, which of the investments listed above is best to allocate money towards and just wait till retirement? I.e. not come in every month or so and reallocate portions of investments etc. Does the answer to this question depend on what I do with my old 401K through fidelity? Every year in the past on 1/1/XXXX I would dump $5,500 into my traditional IRA. This was before I was well informed about the pros and cons of a Roth IRA. Therefore on 1/1/2018 I plan on dumping $5,500 into a Roth IRA but I am not exactly sure where and also not sure if it depends on what I do with my 401K situation (from above). Once again I am looking for an investment where I could dump money into and not touch it till retirement. I have thought about Schwab's SWPPX and Vanguards VOO. Both are relatively the same. Since I already have a Schwab account and SWPPX has a lower expense ratio, I am leaning more towards that investment. However, I am open to all comments/suggestions. I know this post is long so I really appreciate any feedback/advice. I just want to make sure my investments are allocated enough towards retirement while taking on risk (being that i'm only 25). Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Help with selecting my first credit card Posted: 29 Nov 2017 08:19 PM PST Hey all y'all PFers, I'm hoping you guys can help me sort through the overabundance of information on selecting credit cards. I'm looking to get my first one for a very specific purpose. A little background on me: I'm 23 and have had a steady source of income for the past few years, with a good chunk put away in savings and also a Roth IRA. I've had time to really hone my financial habits and feel that now is the time to get a credit card. And I apologize if this post in violating some PF rules - I will gladly repost in the right place or edit if necessary. I'm looking for a card to use for travel, since I now have enough funds that I can afford to take trips throughout the year while I'm still young. I know there are a number of cards that offer rewards on purchases like flights, hotels, restaurants, etc. (such as the Chase Sapphire cards) and those sound like they would be right for me, although I wanted to get some other opinions. My general plan would be to make travel purchases on the card and then pay them off in full immediately with my debit card so I don't carry over any balance. Does this seem like a realistic idea? And if so, which cards can I investigate more that would fit my needs? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Nov 2017 05:48 AM PST Hello, I've been paying off now many small debts, which make one big mess, because the montly payments add up to big payment. It's just loans i took, many years ago, didn't have single clue how to handle money, my mother just taught me i could take loan whenever i needed. Which back then i did. Now it's hitting my back hard. I work overtime in my job and i have second job now. Monthly payments are around 1900usd. Divided, if i put them all together but they sre many like this loan is 230usd, the next is 400usd. Then maybe 150usd. You get my point. But they are more than 3 btw. How is the best way to pay off? Should i pay the highest payment off faster or the one that has the lowest amount of months to pay off? [link] [comments] |

I really need some advice. Re-Financing? or stay with the stress? Posted: 29 Nov 2017 06:43 AM PST Ok I need some help. I just turned 26 and have a dog shit credit (508) or something close to that, a wife and 3 kids. I fell off a roof 3 years ago and hurt myself pretty bad. I am on Workers Compensation barley making it by. I am making less then 1100 a month and can barley stay up to date on bills. I should be getting a settlement within the next 2 or so years and was just wondering what I can do to get by until that time is up. My wife lost her job and is having a really hard time getting one. I own my home valued around 130k and thought about re-financing it to get on top of my bills and get them paid for the next 2 years, also because the funds are so low right now my home is slowly falling apart. I just don't know what to do anymore and I feel like re-financing is my only option to get away from the money stress and the feeling of failing my kids every holiday.... Thank you for your time [link] [comments] |
