    The city my warehouse is in has had a growing homeless population since I can remember and it's only getting worse.

    At first I didn't mind one or two of them taking a break in front of the office laying in the shade on hot days but now it's becoming a problem. I have been making it clear and putting up obstacles to combat the loitering around my property. However my neighbor is a little more "Christ like" than I am and will often let them lounge around his property when no one is there and offers them a outlet to plug into which brings them lingering around my lot and peeking into the back yard.

    My warehouse perimeter is surrounded by barbed wire but they can use said neighbors dumpster and put a shirt over barbed wire to climb over. From there on CCTV I see them hop on my roof to leave. Final straws were: finding one living in my RV I park in the back no clue how he got in, finding one sleeping in our warehouse, the used needles in the front and back of my complex, stolen metal parts, and an abundance of trash/food thrown on the ground.

    So far I've:

    • Moved RV to main office

    • Moved anything of value inside.

    • Put up solar floodlights covering every sq ft of my yard

    • Brought it to the police whom actually have been very helpful and added it to patrol route.

    • Spoken with my neighbor about their outlet - little result. Next up is to aim my flood lights at the outlet.

    • Added more cameras to cover more sq ft of yard

    • Thinking about an electric fence but I have to see if I can do that here.

    • Might hire arm patrol for a few months and see if it helps

    • Thinking about switching shifts so someones is there 24/7 but again don't want to put employees into potentially dangerous situations.

    My main concern is my employees at this point. I don't want anyone to contract a disease by stumbling on a needle and it shouldn't be there problem to clean it up. I also don't want them getting into any dangerous confrontational situations. It also got me in trouble with the city but it was my fault. Basically can't have cigarette butts in my areas and inspector came after a homeless party which got me flagged.

    Moving my warehouse/plant would cost $100k+ on top of downtime due to the machinery I have there so it's not really an option.

    Honestly it wouldn't be as big as an issue as it is for me now if these people showed a little bit of respect to myself, my property, and my employees but since they treat it like a dumping ground I want to hire a hit squad to eradicate them (mostly joking). I want to nip this problem in the ass before I have a shantytown setup on my front doorstep. Any suggestions?

    Trademarked logo is live, but the LLC that registered it is dead?

    Looked up a trademarked logo, the logo is still listed as live, last renewed sometime around 2007. However, the original LLC that filed that trademark is now listed as dead. What happens in this situation? Who has the rights to the mark?

    Determining employee pay

    Hi, I work for a small business which generates roughly 300k-400k a year, though with overhead - a small office, 2 employees, business expenses and the boss, We keep the company account at a steady 200k.

    Boss also has a retirement business, which generates a respectable amount yearly and will be pulling on within the next 5 or so years.

    My question is...what is or would be an acceptable increase in pay for me?

    Im at 53k, The company is composed of two parts...Sales and Claims. Boss does the Sales (Securing clients) & I generate and see through the claims. A year per client from start to invoice. I have 18 Corporate Clients.

    So, essentially I run 1/2 of the business (our 3rd employee picks up slack as needed), I've been here for 8 years.

    I got a hefty bonus two years ago, and the years before that would get a few hundred to 1k here and there throughout the year.

    Last year, I got next to nothing for a bonus (quite the drop from 10k to 1k), although my revenue increased greatly, my performance was stellar, we were at an all-time high. I was in a bad accident at the time of Bonuses and my boss (a little selfish) was irriated, saying if I was at work like him (he works 7 days a week) as opposed to out on the weekend (I was getting a Christmas tree and my son and I were hit, nearly killed) it wouldnt have happenned. So, this was (sucks, yes) his reason for not giving me a bonus. He was "too stressed." Unfair and a whole 'nother issue.

    I recevied a raise of $2.00 in July. First time in 5 years (Reason: "I give you good bonuses, no need for hourly increase.") So, after no bonus was given I asked for a raise.

    Im hoping that this year I get something and am considering leaving if not.

    What is reasonable? (Pay rate and/or bonus). I generated a good 585k in Invoices this year alone from my clients. Our acct is at 300k. We have one other employee (1.5 years). I live in So. Cal. 53k is NOT much money.

    Business registration timing question

    I'm in the very early stages of starting planning a brokerage business of sorts. There would likely not be any actual monetary investment and no income until next year. Is there any benefit to going ahead and licensing before the end of the year? Couldn't really find anything about whether there'd be any sort of tax or other benefit of going ahead and registering.

    The business would be in Oregon and at this point just be a sole proprietorship.

    Help expanding beauty salon

    Hello everyone, my mom owns two successful beauty salons in Michigan one where she and other employees do hair and sell hair and beauty products the other she sells hair products and has other people play her to use the space to do hair. Her first store is not very spacious but has a lot of loyal customers and it isn't the cleanest it can be and she wants to change that location to somewhere where she will get even more customers. Her second store is very clean and very spacious and gets many different types of customers. Can you guys give me any tips to improve the business.

    Need ideas for utilizing rooms that are empty in the morning

    My daughter has a behavioral health clinic that provides ABA therapy, occupational therapy and social skills to individuals (primarily children) with autism, Asperger, Down Syndrome, etc. The majority of the clients come in the afternoon as they attend school in the morning. So, she has approximately 8 rooms (10x12) that are not producing in the mornings and she's looking for ideas on how to utilize them. Keep in mind that because children come in the afternoon (say around 2 pm) not all types of ideas will be suitable. Thanks in advanced.

    Burning Out But Can't Afford To Step Away

    Hey folks, I'm sure this comes up often, but I have to start talking about my situation lest I go crazy.

    I've got a small business, just finishing up our third year, and things are busier than ever. However, I've noticed my passion for this business has all but disappeared and I feel like I need a change of pace. Every day is starting to feel like Groundhog Day.

    There are two things going on: 1) I think I need a vacation but I don't know where to and if we can afford it (I honestly feel sometimes like I don't know what hobbies I enjoy anymore!) 2) I'm admittedly a bit scared about "the next step" -- e.g. if this is no longer satisfying and I want to hand the business off to someone else, I'm worried I won't find anything that is any more satisfying.

    I can see it when I write it that it sounds like classic burnout / depression & anxiety about the whole situation.

    Do you ever feel "stuck" with your business and feel like the spontaneity and excitement is gone? What have you all done to refresh and recharge? I find if I take days off I end up at home which isn't very rewarding... most of my friends are busy running their businesses or working jobs. And I have a pre-schooler so the wife and I can't just nip away at any second.

    Sorry for the long-winded post - I work hard to provide my clients with a great service, but honestly... I need to figure out how to climb out of this little hole so that I can keep caring in the future! Right now it seems like it's the last thing on earth I want to be doing, but I don't know what else to do. Hahaha. Can you tell I'm a bit confused about it all?

    How Should I Structure Multiple Enterprises?

    Starting in 2018 I'll be starting a small urban farm business in Idaho. I also work as an independent contractor, writing for one client 20-30 hours a week. I plan to use the steady income from my writing work to pay for farm expenses, since the farming venture will require up-front payment for supplies with cash flow following toward the end of the season. Hopefully in later years the farm can bankroll itself, but this is year one so I'll need the capital.

    I'm interested in forming an LLC for the farm. However, I'm wondering if I should begin contracting for my writing services under my farm name or keep that as a sole proprietorship. The writing work comes with no real risk, so I'm not worried about incorporating it so much as wondering what the tax implications of each choice would be. What would be the advantages or disadvantages of having a farm-only LLC or putting both enterprises under the same LLC? Can I even do that?

    When I started my own business, I had a dream of paying employees well, giving them equity, and creating an amazing place to work. It was the "right way" to run a business - fair, honest, and noble. And if you do things right, success is more likely (right?). I believed that this would make employees happier, do a better job, and we could all share in the profits. I wanted my employees to love working WITH, not FOR, me.

    I was naive. As many of you are. But reality is cruel. It doesn't care about what you want to believe.

    After starting a business, I paid employees above-market rates, gave them bonuses, and basically did everything I could for them while taking no pay for myself. It was never enough. It will never BE enough. They will always want more. And they will never treat your business the way you do. Because that's human nature. The more honest you are about humanity, the less pain you will have in the long run.

    Pay your employees fairly. Treat them well. But when you make a profit, put it in YOUR pocket. Your employees didn't put their money at risk. They've been compensated for their work. You have to be compensated for yours.

    (note: there are exceptions, like using equity as an incentive but that's not typical for a small business).

    Guaranteed someone is going to come claim that I'm bitter, and they are glad they don't work for me, and they don't have these problems. But I will not coddle you so that you feel better. If you cannot accept reality, you will not make it as a business owner.

    What software are sole traders using for managing deliveries?

    Hey all!

    So allow me to give a slight bit of background to this little potential brain wave that I had, and am looking into seeing is it worth pursuing further.

    I am a student, working full time in a garden centre to help pay my way (It's a lot cheaper over here in the UK).

    I have pretty good customer relations, so I am usually left plonked at the counter - interacting and being the person that all the elderly customers come in and talk to ( I really don't mind, it helps the day fly by).

    So a thing, coming up to Christmas now, is the delivery of Christmas trees - as bizarre as that sounds I know.

    Their is usually 2 guys out on deliveries the whole time, one driver and the other helps with assisting the driver remove all the goods and transport them into the house.

    Simple stuff really.

    The typical "lifter" was sick for the last couple days, and being the only other guy working there I have been reassigned as the assister in these trips.

    And my god I was HORRIFIED at how unprepared they were. So for starters, EVERYTHING is recorded on paper.

    Which I didn't understand at all. There is a big pad of these printed sheets, with certain boxes on them, so as the cashier who is putting through the sale can fill it out if the customer specifies they want it to be delivered to them.

    There is a hell of a lot of:

    • spelling mistakes

    • numbers written down wrong

    • addresses misspelled/ not taken down correctly

    • No time specified on some dockets

    From a few of those mistakes alone yesterday and today it cost us a solid few hours, and a few shouting matches between the 2 of us (built up stress on the drivers part).

    So before we left today we had to do the typical thing of attempting to call all of the customers before-hand to ensure they were there.

    No point driving 25 minutes to deliver a good and to see that they are not there.

    More than 80% of the customers did not have their phones on and did not answer the calls - which of course lead to more stress on the side of the driver.

    So it got me thinking basically - why the hell is this still an issue and why are the garden center not using a software to arrange all of their deliveries for them / does it even exist?

    After looking into a bit, I have found that there are "Systems" to help with deliveries but it goes the whole way down to having additional hardware that the customer signs off when they recieve goods.

    I would not be looking for anything that complex. Essentially I am looking at starting to develop:

    A system in which, customers delivery information are input through a computer / additional hardware piece (tablet etc) at the cash register - and on the day of the delivery the driver of the van obtains a simple / easy to read map of exactly what they have to bring to where - on their phone, and the night before the delivery - the customer is sent a text / email to remind them about the delivery and on the morning of the delivery also.

    Is there anything like that out there at the moment? Or would I be best off trying to code something like it myself?

    Looking for a good book.

    I am looking for a good book that will help me run a small service based business. Next year I plan on hiring my first employee and want to make sure I am doing everything legally.

    Are there any books that you could reccomend that will help me understand basic business law that involves running the business and hiring employees.

    Commission fee for contractor ?

    I have a small cabinet store. One contractor that I knew have brought in 2 customers and now he asked for percentage of commission fee. How much percentage should I give him? And he claimed other cabinet place give him 10 percent, but I am not sure whether or not it is based on total bill or just cabinetry.

    Company Handbook vs. Company Culture Book

    I am working on improving my company handbook and have been looking for good examples from other companies. What I have been able to find online have been "Culture Books" . Here are a few examples:
