Has anyone else had to resign over management pushing for a really shady entry?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 04:35 PM PST

I recently left public and about a month into my new job my manager who is the owner starts asking me about ways to cut down on taxes at this year since 100% of the business income ends up on his 1040. Anyway... he tells me he's going to buy 300k worth of inventory and he wants me to expense all of it. I told him it can't be expensed until sold. He pressed me on it and I explained that would be fraud to which he responded "How are they gonna know?" The next morning he called me into his office and said I wasn't a good fit and let me go from the company.

Just thought this was incredibly shady and never experienced anything like it.

Have any of you CPAs gone to work for the FBI? If so can you please explain your experience in the process and how it's gone so far?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:34 AM PST

I know it's unlikely there are any here, but figured I ask. I've been considering applying to the FBI from big4 and would like to here from anyone with any prior experience.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:54 PM PST

For an upcoming project at my school, I need interview someone who is currently practicing. My teacher suggested this forum. Doesn't need to be location specific. Basic questions. This is for a college course. Trying to accomplish the interview this weekend. Communication through email would be easiest.

I am lost in life on what career to choose from. Is accounting a good choice?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:30 PM PST

I am currently a 20 year old working in retail with no career goals. I am thinking of doing 2 years at my CC and transferring to a business school.

I was never really a fan of advanced math like calculus. I don't see myself studying engineering/science. It seems like accounting is the only decent major that doesn't require advanced math and is also directly marketable. I thought of doing finance but I don't think I am high finance material and afraid that I will get stuck in some sales role forever. Also the schools I will attend are not very "prestigious" schools that good finance jobs recruit from. At least with accounting, I can get my CPA and move up the ladder slowly.

Is accounting a good major for someone like me? Or are there better options?

[CAN] Weeks away from being a CPA with no tax experience looking to get a corp tax job

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:07 PM PST

Hey all, I'm pretty confident that I passed the CFE in Assurance, and I'm currently waiting on my PERT to go through in Experience Verification.

The kicker is that I had a mediocre GPA, no public experience, and no tax experience (mostly project accounting and financial reporting), although I took the tax elective.

I realize this is not a normal path, but I believe it is what I really want. A couple questions: - how would I go about breaking into corporate tax in public practice? - would I be starting as an equivalent to a first year, or would the designation help out? - would it have been really important to have taken the tax role?

Once the recession hit, I just scrambled for a job 18 months ago, which was never really my desired position, but it is what it is. I am also in a city in which I know few accountants (Calgary), and zero that work in tax. What should I do?

Big 4 Christmas party (Intern question)

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:38 PM PST

Hey! I start as an intern in January and I got invited by the recruitment team to a 5 to 7 Christmas cocktail. Is this the firms real Christmas party or it will only be with interns? Should I go and what should I expect? I feel it weird that I show up and know no one at all.

    Thanks!

What to expect during the interview for an entry level Audit Staff position?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:19 PM PST

I have an interview tomorrow at 10 AM with a local CPA Firm. I graduated from school back in May and missed the recruiting cycle, but have been working as AP for the past half year.

What type of questions do you guys think will there be? I am not the best interviewer but want to be prepared as much as possible.

    Desperately Need Help

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 03:41 PM PST

I don't know how to explain this, but for the last ten years, Ive weaseled thru my career as an Accountant without really understanding T accounts, what gets debited/credited, etc. Ive excelled at various financial reports and taking orders, instead of really understanding Basic Accounting. I rely on the electronic accounting systems to get by but if Im asked what account Im debiting/crediting, forget it. Are there any solutions to this or am I doomed? I was hoping maybe there are episodes on Youtube to really grasp the concepts. I do have an Accounting degree but apparently I slept thru the Basic Accounting class or something.

To those of you in public: do you get to "disconnect" from work when you take PTO?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 12:34 PM PST

As a student, I've always wondered about this. Firms will talk about the number of PTO days that they offer, but my assumption has been that, even if you're not in the office, you'll still get people bothering you about stuff. And if you don't stay on top of that, you'll have to deal with pissed off coworkers/clients when you get back. You're not really "off" from work in any sense.

Is this the case, or are people in public respectful when it comes to using PTO?

Edit: It should be said that I'm shooting for tax. I'd be interested to hear if tax differs from audit in this respect

Took FAR Today, Not Sure How To Feel...

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 02:20 PM PST

Sorry, accidentally deleted the old post...

Overall, felt the MCQs were pretty easy. Testlet 1 was pretty much freebies except for a few questions. Testlet 2 was a little harder, but the hard questions on testlet 2 were WAY harder than the hard ones on testlet 1. There were a few I did have to guess on simply because I was taking too long to do them, but that was rare.

MCQs were extremely IFRS and NFP heavy. A little Govt, but not much. I actually got the same NFP question (worded differently) on each testlet. It was an obscure thing, but if you read over the Becker NFP chapter on disclosures, it was free points both times.

The sims were atrocious. Fighting the software was difficult enough, let alone some of the sims. The one I had the worst time with was a cash-flow sim because that's my worst subject, hands-down. The test sim (at least, what I am assuming was the test sim) wasn't too horrible and I'm hoping they give at least partial credit for it.

The only part that put me off is in my first sim (an AJE sim) it didn't specify whether to leave a cell blank or put a "0" for nothing needing to be done. It said "enter the amount necessary, if any, for the adjustment necessary." I thought that meant leave blank, but I remembered all the practice sims on Becker I'd leave blank and get no credit for, so I put in all 0s. The subsequent sims, it had the same "enter the amount necessary, if any, for the adjustment necessary." After that though followed something to the affect of "leave cell blank for any accounts not requiring an entry/adjustment." Not sure how to feel about that, but I'd be pissed to get a 74 because I put "0" instead of leaving it blank when it's not extremely specific like the latter ones. Anybody knows if that will hurt me?

Anyway, overall I feel the exam went well and was easier than everyone has led me on to believe. I can't say for sure that I passed, but I feel confident I got at least a 75. Probably means I bombed it haha. Guess I'll find out the 19th.

Anybody have any questions or anything to throw in, feel free!

    Christmas Party at accounting firm

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:46 PM PST

So I just accepted an offer for a summer internship at an accounting firm and they have kindly invited me to their company holiday party. My girlfriend is not able to go because she will be away. Obviously I should go to make a good impression, but how do these usually work? I literally know a couple people from the firm (barely) and I'm afraid of coming off as awkward. Is there usually assigned seats so the interns can meet each other? Any general advice?

Run Reports from Other Systems Without Leaving Excel - Hygrid.io what you think?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:21 PM PST

Hello everyone, I recently created Hygrid.io, that allows Excel users to run reports from any SQL system without leaving Excel. At this stage, I am simply looking for feedback to test the market viability of the platform. We have it installed in various investment funds (some of them well known). Hoping this will help?

I am curious about benefits when working in public practice. Looking for some insight. Thanks in advance!

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 09:18 PM PST

    My questions:

    1. Does your company pay the full amount or a portion and what % portion?
    2. Can you opt out if you do not need it?
    3. Do you have to give up flex days to acquire these benefits?

I am just trying to figure out industry standard and if what I am being offered is fair. This is in Canada. Would love to hear from you guys!

    Thank you!

Any love for Tax? Y'all seems to talk about just Audit.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 03:24 AM PST

Got a few questions as a curious accounting student. Hope this subreddit will help me out.

I'm a final year student offered a job as Tax Analyst at a Big4. Here are some of my questions:

    1) Is there anyone who went into industry from a tax background in public? If so, is it as valuable as audit in terms of jobs/payscale? Because the subreddit makes me feel tax is a road less taken and that audit is the way.

    2) Employer promised to sponsor professional qualifications but will I be pigeonholed to just tax courses like ATT, CTA or will I have choices like CPA, ACCA (All the qualifications as mentioned by the employer)

    3) Also on what is Kool Aid maybe? :D

    I would like some advice

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 05:18 PM PST

I'm currently enrolled to get my associates in accounting and am on my first year of college. After my associates I'm going to go for my Bachelor's. At the moment I haven't taken an accounting class because the textbooks at my school are expensive. I'm currently looking for a job that I can do to gain experience in the accounting field while going to school.

I would just like advice on what sort of entry level no degree jobs I can get so I can gain that experience and get that degree at the same time. I'm currently thinking of reading some accounting and bookkeeping books over break to gain some knowledge. Would that be recommend? I'm looking for any and all advice on jobs I can get and what I should to do get them with no experience. I do have a year of job experience though in the financial industry.

When should you begin applying to industry FT?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2017 08:35 PM PST

I'm asking because I know when going to career fairs and accounting conferences that for FT positions really only public accounting firms hired far in advanced.

After talking to a few recruiters in various industries, they all said to apply one or two quarters before the quarter you're planning to work. Would y'all agree?

I'm currently doing a MAcc program and doing the CPA exam, so not really able to start working FT until I graduate in July 2018.
