AeroPress inventor first sold flying ring toys, then pivoted his business to coffee after an invention he made at age 65.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 05:36 AM PST

When we look at entrepreneur stories, it's always so inspiring to see how people invented game-changing products.

AeroPress is one of these products. It's got a fascinating story (watch the whole story here), and what's really interesting is its inventor launched the idea at age 65. It's never too late to pivot your business!

AeroPress is such a simple product, basically just a plastic tube, but it's generated millions in revenue. So, how did it come about?

It was invented by Alan Adler, a retired Stanford University engineering instructor. His inventing career actually started with toys. In the 1970s, he started working on designing a flying disc that was easy for the average person to throw.

The result was the Skyro, which he licensed to toy manufacturer Parker Brothers. Even though it sold a million units, it wasn't enough to maintain their interest, and they returned the license to him. Next, Adler decided to launch the product, known as the Aerobie Pro, himself.

Alan Adler got tons of publicity for the Aerobie Pro because a toy being invented by a wacky college professor made good headlines. This led to early success for the disc.

Despite this flying ring success, it was a conversation with his sales manager's wife that would prompt him to invent his most popular product.

She asked: "what do you do when you want one cup of coffee?"

As a result, Adler started trying to discover how to make the perfect single cup of coffee, not thinking he was working on his next product.

Eventually, he came up with the design of the AeroPress. After making the first prototype in his garage and tasting the resulting coffee, Adler was blown away by the results. He invited Aerobie General Manager Alex Tennet to his house, who, after tasting a cup, said, "Alan, I can sell a ton of these."

The Aeropress was the ultimate solution to make coffee brewing easy and convenient for a single cup. Needless to say, the simple product was a total hit. And to start this all at age 65 shows you that any good entrepreneur should always be thinking of new ideas and opportunities.

It's never too late to come up with the next big thing!

Got any cool invention stories you'd like to share?

My first ever product is now on product hunt

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 02:29 AM PST

    Product Hunt Link: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/blox-5

I personally believe that the easiest thing to sell right now is ease. I am a developer by profession and there are way too many tools/products that solely work to ease things up. The development sector does need a little easing up since it is already very hard. Going with the trend I also decided to make a tool that would make development easier and more fun. During my time coding, I have always used VS Code and not to mention, I am a fan therefore I do have this soft corner for it. Naturally, I decided to make a tool for VS Code users. After doing some research and many failed tries with my team, blox was born. blox is a VS Code extension that has pre-made UI components in it. Currently, blox has more than 1500 UI components and 250 of them are free. We took the idea of UI Kits and tried to integrate a UI Kit within the VS Code. with the help of blox developers won't have to leave their VS Code again and again to fetch code. blox was launched 3 months ago and so far the progress has been rather steady. We have now decided to launch our extension on the product hunt to get more exposure. We are amped up for this new step and hoping to learn a lot at the same time. Looking forward to all the feedback that we are going to receive. Fingers Crossed!

Feedback needed: Would people want to speak anonymously with a therapist if it were free and asynchronous? We built an MVP site and would love this community to try it and give honest feedback.

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:46 AM PST

Would it also be helpful to leave an anonymous voice message to a licensed therapist for feedback if there were no cost or commitment?

A lot of people can't get into therapy for various reasons, including cost, time, and not wanting the commitment. We thought there might be interest in casually speaking, asynchronously, with a therapist, so we built a quick website https://www.voicemem.org/ to test it out.

You talk for up to ten minutes and answer a survey about your anxiety and depression levels, and we will get back to you in a few hours with our feedback, thoughts, and questions through a voice memo. You can continue the conversation as long as you want.

Since we are licensed therapists, we might add a different perspective or ask questions that your friends or fellow Redditors might not consider. We might also help you see how your symptoms are impacting the situation and vice versa.

It's free for the next month while we test it.

    Try it out!

If you have any questions or thoughts, drop me a reply here, and I'll be more than happy to answer all of them.

    I started a business!!!!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 11:12 AM PST

    I started a business!!!!!

Hey guys how's it going. I just wanted to let some people know about my experience starting a business . I see tons of people posting about successful businesses but in my opinion (here is site for reference airlinestatus.com in no way advertising buts it a good reference to the info)

My first tip would be know who your surrounding yourself with. Bringing family along with you ends up poorly most of the time in my experience with other ventures.

Hire food freelancers- I used upwork for all of our help from eBay consignment to building out a $20,000 site. However my advice isn't spend a bunch of money but more so know where you are spending the money and looking at people's reviews.

Spend time time and more time- in my past business's I would rush them up and it would end up poorly. Please do extensive research if your product will even be profitable. Figure out your margins and google ads. There's so much free information on YouTube just keep learning!

You have to love it- you don't have to love everything about the business but you need to enjoy it.

Anyway that's my advice, I'm still learning so a ton could be wrong but overall I'm just super excited about our launch and wanted to share it with y'all. Good luck everyone

-BTW if anyone wants to chime in with tech or business advice I would love to hear it. Link airlinestatus.com Cheers

Entering the Marijuana Industry for Cheap

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 11:09 AM PST

It seems like the weed industry is an extremely high barrier to entry. I would love to open a bar/ lounge for stoners or start a line of weed to become the Marlboro/ Budweiser of weed. But I want to find a cheap way to enter the industry without paying for all these permits (NYC it's $200,000 every 2 years for a dispensary license).

When you get a license can you use that to open multiple dispensaries? Like if I met someone who has a dispensary license can I pay them a fee and use it?

Any other ideas for a cheap entry point would be appreciated.

Help Me With a Name For My App!!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:57 AM PST

Hello! I am developing a new app and am looking for some ideas for the name of my app and thought I would come here to get some brainstorming from you guys!

About the app: the app's purpose will be to connect users given their location and will connect those users based on similar interests (note: users don't need to upload pictures of their faces, as this becoming a dating app is not what I want). The user experience is as follows: User 1 will create a post (e.g "looking for basketball players for Tuesday") and then upload a related picture. User 2 can then directly message the user of that post.

What would you name of an app that aims to connect these two users?

    Before Buying a Logo

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 10:41 AM PST

The process of working with a designer to produce a logo can be a bit intimidating for first timers. Here I have a list of a few things to expect and some tips!

    1. Know Your Budget If you know your budget ahead of time when the designer you're working with sends you a price estimate you know if it will work for you or not. If not you can try to negotiate if the designer is open to dialouge. If you're in a time crunch be sure you can compensate for that.

    2. Review the Process A designer (should) provide you with what the process of working together will look like. Be sure to review this thoroughly so you know what you're getting into. Usually a time frame is also provided with this information.

    3. Know What You Want Yes, it's the designers job to create a design brief that encompasses what you want in a logo, BUT if you know what you want before hand it helps a lot! Things like colors you're leaning towards, logos you like/dislike, and the personality of your business (serious, playful, modern).

So that's a bit of what can help transitioning into the logo making phase a bit easier. Hope this helps!

A Company that Collects Road Data from Cars and Sells it to Local Governments

Isn't it always curious how people who frequently drive in an area know about the potholes, but the local government tasked with fixing them seems totally unaware? This idea would involve a business partnering with certain car manufacturers to add a sensor which would be able to detect poor road conditions. It would then aggregate this data and sell it to the relevant local municipality.

How do you file for a new business? Online or with a lawyer directly?

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 07:08 AM PST

Hi all, had a quick question. I'm looking to create an LLC and wondering if it's better to have business lawyer or cpa simply file the creation docs with the state or if I should just do it. Always been somewhat flaky on remembering filing dates and such and almost would prefer someone to be on top of it for me. In addition, I could most likely use one of them as a registered agent. Thoughts?

Looking for Partners for a new FinTech Startup

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:54 AM PST

    Hey all,

We want to announce that we started the development of an online app for the freelancer and small company finance analytics. We call it Blacbook.

The idea behind the solution was molded for a long time in our minds, we tested it couple of times using the tools at hand and it shows great results.

When we were starting up, we realised that there are no good solutions to analyze your financial state as a small company. All solutions that we saw were either too complex and bloated for the small businesses or individuals or too limited to gain any good insight from it. And none of these solutions really help users to understand how to analyze and therefore improve their business in a financial way. So we came up with an idea of Blackbook. But we were in the rush with our design agency (the main business we have currently), so just made a simple MVP based on Google Sheets and used it till this day.

Now we figured out that this Google Sheets became overcrowded and it takes a lot of time to manage it and it lacks functionality. But we crave financial insight to know how to be more effective and how to move forward. So we made an MVP based on our own solution.

The concept consists of 2 things:

    - It should be easy to fill in the income / expenses

    - The analytics should adapt to the goal of your research

For the first point we want to use modern tools to help with data addition. Among the user-friendly interface we want to create Browser Extension that will allow to fill the data quickly and get it automatically from some browser contents.

For the second point we use custom properties feature and rich visualisation tools. Later on we want to implement the AI solution that will analyze the data and give possible insights to the user.

We learned on our own experience that the solution is working and helps to see the financial state of the company much better and clearly see the ways to increase your income and lower the expenses. We made several decisions based on the analytics for ourselves and they increased our imcome drastically.

We see that it's a rise of independent workers and freelaners in the world at the moment and most of them have no idea how to properly track and analyze the income and expenses and how to make some use out of it. We saw that some just use Notepad to input the income and that's it. So we think that if we make a service from the solution, we'll be able to gain audience pretty quickly. Software as service model is easy to scale and manage, since you have clear KPI and analytics to make the decisions.

We're a web-development company with the more than 6 years track record working with various companies from different fields of business worldwide. Nick is an CTO with more than 10 years background in design and development and Vlad is CEO with the same amount of experience in project management and sales. We have a team of talented people: designers, web engineers, managers who already work with us and can bring this project to life.

But we have a lack of financing for the project, since it's our own solution we'll need financing for the team. Besides that, we'll need to have marketing budget to push the solution to the target audience. The rest will be on our end.

So we're looking for partners to help us make change in the freelance and small business financing and have some fun along the way. Let us know if you're interested to participate in the project as our partner or investor and we can schedule a call and give you some more insight.

    Help with Financial Projections

    Posted: 23 Feb 2022 06:45 AM PST

    Greetings all,

I'm having a difficult time coming up with what I believe is reasonable financial projections for my business plan. I'm doing the plan to get some financing to fund the purchase of some equipment.

The problem is, there is little information on Rapid Prototyping in Canada. The good thing is there is also little competition in the area I'm looking to target, but that also means little information as well.

I've not found any significant information that can give me any type of guideline in this area. I'm totally shooting in the dark it seems. Expenses are easy to figure out, but I'm not sure what I can guess at income.
