Trying to determine reasonable salary yet my hours/income vary month to month

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 12:24 AM PST

I'm an audio engineer who just elected to be an S Corp, and when looking online I saw the average engineer locally makes about $25/hr which annually is about $48,000 based on a 40 hour work week.

I currently charge $50/hr. But only work about 80-90 hours a month tops depending on how many clients I have that month.

I'm wondering if I can base my pay strictly on hourly (paying myself $30/hr and leaving the other $20/hr as business income and using the distributions as I need them) while running payroll every day or once a week instead of trying to figure out a salary since it's hard to know how much I'll be making

I want to start an online store, no clue where to start

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 12:13 AM PST

Hi, im a student who likes to draw and desperately wants to open a t-shirt shop showcasing my art (t-shirts, canvas bags, posters, hoodies for now). Basically I really need side money and others have suggested I monetize myself.

The issue is that I don't know where to start. I have about five good designs I wish to start with (because I don't have a ton of capital to start, casue college student). I was thinking of putting down a good 400-500$ to get things off the ground, but im confused about inventory, shipping, the website and payments.

I already have a brand name and email. I really need to get the ball rolling on this one.

In short, any advice for opening an online apparel store at a low cost?

    How to get more clients?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 03:48 AM PST

I am failed. I started my web design & SEO Services business years ago. Initially got some clients locally via word of mouth. Websites' prices are low here. Even though I provided the hosting (shared, VPS for bigger website), update, maintenance, SEO optimization for free, the first-year price is just $100- $300. I don't know if it was a mistake not to charge them monthly. I haven't had a client for months & I'm completely broke financially. Did some outreach and received a $100 order from a UK-based agency. After that, I am not getting much response. Currently, looking for a part-time job to cover my living expenses. I have to earn at least 400 per month. I am getting depressed after not getting lucky through outreach. I have to learn to get high-paying clients. But for now, I am looking for ways to get clients as soon as possible.

Furthermore, I have some drawbacks like English is my second language, and I don't work with certain niches like Porn, drugs, Fake News, gambling ETC.

Looking for advice from fellow web businesses.

Elected to be an single member S Corp at the end of February, do I need to run payroll on what I’ve made so far in January and February?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 11:55 PM PST

Maybe this will make more sense when I sign up for a payroll service but I'm curious as to how I should handle the money that the business has made so far this year.

Side note: 1. Could I run payroll everyday I work since I'm basing my pay off of hourly rather than salary?

    1. Can I take distributions as I need them throughout the month?

How to find(Angel)Investors and VCs for Seed Round?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2022 02:20 AM PST

There have been a large number of aspiring entrepreneurs who are seeking for investors for their seed round(or early stage). Most fail to attract investors since they have no or little traction. But some make it.

1, What is the difference between startups that n get funds for their seed round and others that are ignored?

2, Where do people look for angel investors for their seed round?

3, Any startup stories about getting funded for their seed round and became successful?

4, Angelist is a popular site to look for investors but it is not free. Do you know any site that is widely used to pitch business to angel investors for seed round?

5, Any additional information you think people who are looking to get investors to fund business for seed round should know?

    Thanks for reading!

    Ending relationship?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 03:44 PM PST

I've been trying to recruit this guy who said he's interested in working with me on launching a business. We met once in January, and then he has cancelled the two meetings we've scheduled since then. And he has been very difficult to contact, since I have only his email (to which he has proven slow to respond).

"I hope this message finds you well. This may seem surprising, but let's go ahead and hit "quits" on this project. As you know, startups are often difficult. They require urgency, scrappiness, momentum, and speed. To this point, we (as a team) have struggled (approaching two months) with even getting a second call started, and that seems like a worrisome problem to have at this point.

It seems like teams should at least vaguely feel on the same page with regard to urgency and speed, and perhaps we will have more alignment in the future. Right now, you're doing amazing things at your job, and I want to respect your priorities.

It has been great getting to know you, and you seem like a great engineer. Hopefully we will have a chance to connect in the future.

Feel free to keep in touch. Rooting for your success at your job and any future professional endeavors.

    All best."

    What would you edit/add?

Tax question for a small business

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 09:41 PM PST

    Hello smart folks from reddit,

I will be paying a consultant for providing services for my small brand. Are there any tax implications that I should be aware of when paying them an hourly rate? Or do I just pay them the gross amount?

    Thanks for the help

Advice, Tips, Anything? Looking to start a small buissness but it seems impossible...

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 08:30 PM PST

    25 F (She/Her). Scroll for TL:DR.

So as the title reads, I'm looking to start a small buissness of my own. I don't have any history in buissness, I've always worked entry level jobs and just recently became a manager of a small local hotel. I've worked in a lot of fields trying to figure out exactly what I want to do for the rest of my working life, as most young adults do. My area is smaller and remote, but we have the advantage of lots of tourists visiting the area nearly year-round.

So knowing all of that, I'm looking to get my "piece of the pie," one could say. I have this idea to build tiny home style vacation rentals but with a unique twist. I don't really want give my twist away because I've done research into it and the ones that exist are very few and far between.

Anyways, where I'm going with all this is that I want to start this buissness but I don't know where to start. I don't have the land. I could build one on my property, but that would be all I could build. And maybe that's where I should start, but I know on a larger scale with plenty of marketing it could be hugely successful and this area will support it. I don't have a lot of capital. If I decide to buy a piece of land with the intention of building these rentals, that's a lot of cash. A LOT. And that's what is really making this feel impossible. But I've sketched, modeled, researched, even attempted to educate myself with free buissness text books online, because this has become my dream. I've written up draft buissness plans. I've really been invested into this idea and how I can realistically make it happen.

So I'm looking for advice, resources, anything. I want to make smart choices for my future. I want to create something I'm proud of. But I'm young, unexperienced, and a bit scared shitless. If you was in my place, what would be the first step you take?

Tl:DR I like the hospitality field. I want to build vacation rentals. Area has lots of tourism. But I'm young, unexperienced, and unsure of where to start. I could build one on my property, but I would have to buy land to have multiple. Lots of cash. Scary. If you was me, where would you start?

Is it wise to get a loan to handle payroll?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 06:41 PM PST

Hello, My business has been growing and I've been reading books on scaling properly. I wanted to ask you guys what's your opinion on this

Is it a good idea to take out a business loan to cover payroll? That way I don't interrupt cashflow and I can invest into assets? I have the cashflow to cover the loans and pay that interest. That way I'm able to build that relationship with banks just incase I need a bigger loan in the future and I can use my money to fund things that make me more money? However, I don't need the loan right now. Im more than able of handling payroll without a loan
