Selling Bath Bombs - Getting Annihilated by Shipping Costs

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 05:27 PM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I decided to start making my own bath bombs and listed some on ebay. I hunted down the best deals on raw ingredients and got the price of each 4.8 oz bath bomb down to just 75 cents to produce. That's great, but all of my savings get completely wiped out by shipping costs. For a set of twelve bath bombs, ebay charges me on average $20 to ship and $28 on the high end, which completely wipes out my profit margin. I could raise my prices, but there are people listing 5 oz bath bombs in sets of 12 for only $23! Like how? The shipping cost alone should make this unsustainable for them but yet they're able to do that? Am I missing some shipping hack that these people have figured out?

I ship my products using USPS priority mail and I have my own packaging, which is just the right size to fit my products but not much larger than that (12x9x3 corrugated box to package the bath bombs and a 13x10x4 box to ship everything).

So is there anything else I can do to cut costs to be competitive? here is my listing incase any of you are curious:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/144390349236

If there's anything glaring here that would explain why my products aren't selling I would appreciate feedback. Thanks again everyone for reading my post!

[Help Wanted] My dad opened up his own business (drive through mini market) and nobody is showing up

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:35 PM PST

    Hi all,

After spending the last 2 years dealing with permit issues my dad finally opened up his own drive through mini market here in Puerto Rico. The idea is that you can get groceries and basics without exiting your car. Think of Farm Stores in the USA.

The store is on a very busy street, and we have an occasional person walk by and buy a drink or snack, but no actual cars are pulling up. We have been open for almost 2 weeks and have only had 2 cars and 6-7 walkers.

The concept of a drive through convenience store is new to the area, nobody else has this type of business here, and our street is incredibly busy. Yet, nobody is even attempting to show up. We have some signs near the road, of our name + Mini Market + some items we sell, but still nothing.

To be honest, we ran out of money, so our options are quite limited for marketing. We can probably stay open for around 6 months before giving up.

I don't really know how else to help my dad. I'm there working every day but obviously that doesn't mean much if we don't have any customers.

If you have any experience with these type of stores, I would love to hear some advice or feedback.

    Thanks so much-

    Opinions Please

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 06:57 AM PST

I am 16 years old. I want to become a journalist and so I created an online magazine to get experience and build my portfolio. It's doing very well, and I found out that I would like to turn my magazine into somewhat of a business.

However, my parents are unaware and I don't know how to use my bank account to pay for things online like web hosting. I was wondering if one of my (18+ year old) cousins would like to be a business partner, where I could pay them with cash for things that I need (like a website theme) and then he can pay for those things online.

I was wondering what you all thought. Should I

    A) Wait until I'm 18 B) Ask my cousin to be my business partner C) Tell my parents about my plans

    Thanks!

Edit: Thank you all so much for the useful advice! I really appreciate it

How common is a hobby business mentality, where you invest into a business that doesn't make money back, and how do you make sure you never get into such a position?

Particularly interested about this in the food manufacturing industry, and the entertainment industry, say events.

    New Start Up Advice UK

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 12:27 AM PST

Hi, so I'm in the midst of creating my own food business. It's technically a takeaway but I make healthy Thai food. I decided to cook from home to start with to reduce outgoing costs of a rental. I have a supplier in mind and a calculated cost of ingredients. I've registered as a food business but don't need to register as self employed just yet as I'm not trading currently. I do have a certificate in food hygiene and health and safety but I'm doing the online courses recommended by the FSA just for back up. I have a menu set up, logo is being designed and website is halfway there (can't complete until logo is done.) My website will take orders and going to get a second phone for purely business. I also have a business email set up. My partner will be delivering orders to reduce cost of advertising on Just Eat etc. I'm currently looking at cost of packaging, and have different websites that I'm stuck between. I have complete faith in the quality of food, but I'm wondering what tips and advice I could get for running your own business?

People who opened physical storefronts, what surprised you about renting a commercial space?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 01:16 PM PST

I'm pivoting from a business I can operate at home to one that (in my state) I need to rent a commercial space for. I'm looking at some properties for lease in my area with office/work space and a little retail frontage. This is the first time I've ever considered renting something besides an apartment, but I know that what I can learn about the process from Dr. Google isn't the whole story.

If you've rented commercial space, was there anything that blindsided you? Any tips for choosing a reliable realtor or a good landlord? Horror stories? (My personal fear is that I won't be able to secure a lease because I'm not profitable enough.)

How do I deal with taxes when holding large customer deposits for 6-12 months?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 12:26 AM PST

    Single Person LLC:

Business noob here could use some help. I started a small travel business where we send people on group tours. They will sometimes pay large deposits a year ahead of their trip, however 90% of this money is going to be spent on expenses the following year.

I received a 1099-K from my payment processor including all of these transactions (deposits for a trip the following year).

I know I now have to report this as income but the problem is most of this will be spent on expenses so it doesnt make sense that I would have to pay taxes on money reserved for expenses right?

So being new, I'm unsure how this works being as it overlaps a calendar year and with taxes coming up I need to get ahead of this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

Properly Calculating Cost of Goods (COGS)

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 04:18 PM PST

Hi all, I'm doing inventory to prep for tax season, but I had questions about Cost of Goods (COGS).

    1. Do I factor shipping costs into COGS? I have an invoice for $1.4k and around $300 of it is for shipping. Should I divide the shipping cost equally amongst every line of the invoice? Or write this off separately as "Shipping/Postage"? My gut is telling me to evenly spread the shipping across all the items, since the shipping is literally a direct cost associated with the product.
    2. What about sales tax? If I paid taxes or customs/duties for items, should I also evenly split those costs across all the products on the invoice?
    3. How do I round? If I split shipping and taxes/customs/duties amongst all the items on a given invoice, what if I end up with a weird number like $0.548333333? Do I round up to the nearest cent? Or always round down?

Appreciate any insight on this. Thank you!

How much turnover compared to expenses?

    Posted: 03 Feb 2022 02:43 AM PST

    Hi all

I run a small tutoring company - couple of tutors, including myself, teach subjects to college students.

Turnover is about $100k a year. I am doing this year's accounts. I was interested in what other people's turnover to expense ratio was.

About 25% of our annual turnover goes on expenses. which I think might be quite low?

My Company Name Sounds Dirty, But it's Not

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 07:36 AM PST

I need some advice on my video marketing company's name. I have always been a strong proponent of keeping my name in the company name. Right now the company name is literally my name, Kristian Golick. But that gives no context as too what I do. So I was thinking of KG Media. But then I thought of GolickMedia.

Pros of GolickMedia are that it's a last name attached to the word "media", which is very typical for a marketing company, and the domain is already mine.

I also am well aware of how my last name sounds, and the associations with it.

I'd love your thoughts on GolickMedia, and if you think it's a good name to move forward with. Thank you!

Need some opinions and answers if any one can help. Selling video games online and maybe in the near future open a small local shop

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:12 PM PST

So here's what I'm doing, I buy and resell video games I find from Thrift Stores, swap meets, online marketplace, etc. I have doing this on and off for about 3 years now. I have gotten about $20k in merchandise and want to sell more than usual as it's been a hobby and I want to expand it more than a hobby. It's not a lot I know but I definitely can get more. Anyways I live in California and sell from home, online using ebay or other websites dedicated to video games. So my question is do I need to get a sellers permit in California to sell? Is it a good idea if it's not a requirement if I only sell online at the moment. Would I need a business license if I plan to make a certain amount per year? Also if i do pretty well, i plan to start a local video game store, so would me getting a sellers permit and business license now help me out to open a retail store eventually down the line? I'm all new to this sorry for all the questions. If anyone can help out.

Any advice on how to get more online visibility for my sign rental business?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 11:02 PM PST

    Hi,

About a year and a half ago, I started making signs for special occasions that I wanted to rent out (for example MR & MRS sign for weddings, BABY signs for baby showers etc..). Last year, I timidly promoted my first finished sign, a sign that fits Valentine's Day events. I advertised it on a local FB group, without really hoping for anything (was literally just a picture and a little text).Turns out a local restaurant was interested in renting it and even requested additional handmade accessories. A dozen people commented and reacted on my post.

Then someone else, whose coworker gave her my details contacted me to rent a sign for a marriage proposal. In two weeks, I had secured my first two bookings plus a collab with a friend who has a luxury picnic event business. Occasionally, I get a cut when she uses one of my signs, but it's only once in awhile, so definitely not a steady income.

Needless to say it gave me a much needed boost in confidence and optimism that my business would take off easily once I'd started advertising it properly. Fast forward to this year, I finished more signs, created proper FB and IG pages with great pics. A few weeks ago, I posted on the same local FB group, then on another local FB group, then another one..... and nothing. No reaction whatsoever, no engagement, no enquiries.

I posted again yesterday about my Valentine's Day sign on those same groups. Literally one or two reactions only, more views on my page... but no enquiries, no comments. I do realise that I shouldn't be impatient and that it might take time to grow but I really expected it to work like last year.

I'm a complete newbie in terms of marketing so before I start flooding IG, Marketplace and any other platforms with my posts, and investing in business cards to drop "accidentally" wherever I go, I was wondering if there was any mistake I should avoid or any tips?

A friend suggested that I create a website. Does it really make a difference? I suppose not everyone is on social media but then how to promote that website ?

Would it be a good idea to contact the venue who rented the sign last year and ask them if they're interested this year as well or would it be too forward?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Wholesale Trading

Hello everyone, I just started my business in California and intend to trade goods with other businesses. I was wondering what legal documents do I need to ask from my business customers in order to make the transaction. In addition do I as the seller need to have any other special license besides the seller's permit?

    Marketing/SEO/Ads

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 10:14 PM PST

I recently started creating websites, seo, Facebook and IG ads for some friends that have small businesses. I'd like to create a business and do this all the time. Does anyone have any advice on how to get more small businesses to use my services?

I've always been good at the actual content creation, but feel like I'm awful at trying to reach out to new customers. Anyone have any advice or strategies that work for them?

Best point of sale for liquor store with 4 employees?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 05:44 PM PST

We currently use sticker and a a register u have to type the price in on. So anything is an improvement.

Cheap price is a bonus but no/very low monthly fee is bigger bonus.

Definitely need One that offers assistance switching the store over and learning how to use it.

And the easier it is to keep track of stock and ordering needs in the store the better.

First job as 1099 as physician

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 07:37 AM PST

So, I'm graduating from residency this June. I'm signing a contract as 1099 position. I'll be sent to different Skilled Nursing Facilities to provide my services so I wont have much in terms overhead (I wont own a practice just rendering services). I will bill the insurance company for my services then my contractor will send me the check (after my contractor deducts a percentage).

I'm thinking of using Gusto payroll service. Have them hold my self employment taxes, file quarterly taxes, do autocontributions to solo 401k, HSA etc. Does this seem reasonable route? I can afford the service, it doesnt seem worth my time to do it myself as I'll likely earn more per hour than the time it'd take for me to do it myself and potential mess ups that could cost a lot of time

Good day to all. Im hoping to get some pointers on how to get my business seen by more people. Ita a completely online business with no physical location.

I basically do virtual staging and photo editing targeted at real estate agencies.

Now i have pages on Facebook and LinkedIn bur even though i have people following these pages that are exactly the customers im looking for as well as fantastic feedback the few times ive done something for someone, these were for free to get some eyes on my work. Im just not seemingly able to get paying customers.

So basically, how did you get the name out about your business?

    How much is exposure worth?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:02 PM PST

I'm thinking of building a platform that connects businesses with freelancers, wondering what the right angle would be. What I've noticed there's a lot of:

    1) Businesses who need a service done by a pro, not super concerned with speed or quality but have no budget.

    2) Pros who are trying to get started and would be willing to do some free work for a business in exchange for a testimonial and contractual rights to use that business's name in their portfolio.

Here's some examples: Updating marketing copy on a website, fixing an issue with a website, figuring out how to set up an integration between multiple services, etc. Basically half the questions people ask in this sub.

Freelancers who are trying to get started but can't get clients yet because they have no reviews or clients to use in their portfolios may be willing to do some pro Bono work in exchange for exposure.

    Is this a fair trade?
