I got scammed out of $6000 out of a restaurant in Turkey, what should I do? Posted: 24 Feb 2022 03:52 PM PST Hi reddit, I (25m) wanna preface this is by saying yes, I am a huge dumbass and I should have known better, but it was literally my first international trip from America and the first time i felt so blatantly manipulated for the first time in my life, like I am usually the person who falls for this kind of thing, which made me feel like absolute shit for the past few months about this. I met with a guy around the area on my trip to Istanbul, which was around Christmas 2021 and I talked to him quite some time trying to figure out if he is legitimate or not but long story short, he manged to convince me to a bar nearby which had good views and decent hookah (which is the fuck up #1), and it had about 4 bouncers in the beginning (which was fuck up #2) but we talked and hung out at the bar for an hour, but he kept ordering bottles for the table (even though I have mentioned him multiple times during, before and after that I do not drink, but assured me he will pay for it). While I was talking to him, the club owner comes in with all the bouncers and hands us a bill in a scrap piece of paper and told us we have to pay it, with 5 bouncers on us, mind you. It did not occur to me that the guy is in cahoots with the owner, as he basically said he will pay half and it should not be a lot. I did not have my card on me, and I just had my phone, and I did not understand what the owner was saying to the guy, but I know 100% the guy pretended to pay as the terminal looked off, and he told me my turn, forcing me and extorting me to hand over my phone, as it was in my hand. My phone was on low battery, so it was on airplane mode, with NFC off, and I only saw one payment go through. He let me leave after that, but when I got home and turned data on, I saw 3 separate charges, with different amounts posted to my account totaling $6k in my phone. Here's what I have done:
What should I do next? Am I just fucked out of my potential savings? Can I report this as a loss in my taxes? I have not tried filing a fraud affidavit but I am unsure if I am able to in this case Thank you, [link] [comments] |
Newer homeowner here with a “terrible” interest rate. Can I refinance? Should I wait? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 01:48 AM PST Hey all. New homeowner here I bought my house in mid 2021. It's a brand new manufactured/modular home on a few acres. My credit was terrible when I got approved, I was genuinely shocked that I was approved. But the catch was a larger down payment and a 8% interest rate. Also a 23yr conventional mortgage. Also, I am asking if I should wait. Because my credit is better now than it was before. But I just payed a large amount of debt off of my credit cards litterally yesterday. So should I wait until credit karma shows that update? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Feb 2022 03:57 AM PST What type of account can she open where she could be direct deposited to but withdrawing or using the money would not be easy? Ideally there would be no option for an atm card. Perhaps some type of account where your money would be locked in for a predetermined time and withdrawing it before that time would not be easy. A traditional savings account is just not cutting it. A monetary penalty for withdrawing early is not deterrent enough. We're thinking of something where withdrawing would be so cumbersome and time consuming that by the time she would be able to, the impulse phase would have passed. A direct deposit into some type of investment plan where once the money is deposited, it would immediately be converted into some type of commodity or liquid or even illiquid asset would be great. I'd appreciate input from those who have experience in this, and the feasibility of it for our particular situation. We're working on the underlying issue, but in the meantime, we're trying to keep this boat afloat. Appreciate any advice! [link] [comments] |
My Savings Plan for the Next 2.5 Years? Does it make sense? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:21 AM PST Okay so I got into a graduate program (pays 24,000 a year and student fees are about 2,000/yr plus maybe 500-700 fees for the summer), so after taxes and student fees I figure my budget is about 16,000/yr. I currently have just over 16,000 in undergrad debt. My current savings is 13,000. I plan to make 7500 in the next 5 months to pay off 6,000 on my student loans, and then have 4,500 pocketed for student fees. So then I would have 10,000 in debt and 10,000 in savings for emergencies and 4,500 to pay my fees over the next two years. Does this sounds doable? My current job I make 10.50/hr plus tips, which usually works out to 2.30tips/hr. [link] [comments] |
SSN accidentally given to scammers Posted: 24 Feb 2022 11:39 PM PST So I'm really stupid or gullible I know so please don't roast me Im already sick to my stomach. I got an email from Wells Fargo that looked legit and it said there was a fraudulent activity on my card and a $400 purchase was declined. It then said if this wasn't you, click this link, which I clicked and then proceeded to give all my information. everything. banking, ssn, dob. im sick to my stomach. im on 22 in college and I have 1 credit card. it took me about 12 hours to realize the email was fake... I called Wells Fargo and they're sending me a new debit. I changed my online bank username and password. and I just went on the 3 credit bureaus and froze my credit. what else am I supposed to do? I need to tell my parents but its midnight so I have to wait until morning but im so scared. is there a chance that within those 12 hours the scammer already opened 10 credit cards and bought a bunch of stuff? can I prove it wasn't me if they did and will they cancel it? im so horrified I feel like there's more I should do but I can't think. please any advice is appreciated very much. In the process of selling our house, what to do with the proceeds? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:10 AM PST Closing is scheduled in the next few weeks. We already moved into an apartment as we contemplate our next steps. We plan on buying/building something in the near future. In the meantime, what is the best thing to do with the sales proceeds? Best and safer way to convert FIAT into Gold, Silver and other precious? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:07 AM PST I'd want to convert some of my savings into safe haven assets, but I am wondering at the moment which can be the most reliable institutions (also online) through which to carry out this type of operation. Also I would like to know if it's safe to hold gold remotely and what are the dangers in this case. I have seen services like Kinesis or others similar but I would like to understand more and hear from someone with more experience in this sense. I could solve it by buying it live but I would prefer to maintain a higher security profile and anonymity, avoiding involving various individuals. Thanks a lot to everyone. [link] [comments] |
ACH transfer speeds: Discover Bank vs CapOne 360 Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:03 AM PST Curious… of the two banks in the title… which has the fastest ACH transfer speeds? I'm between these two as my main bank right now and they seem comparable minus Discover does 1% cash back debit purchases and CapOne does early paychecks. Neither of these features is enough to sway me one way or another, so I think ACH speeds will be my biggest deciding factor. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Has anyone taken a personal loan to buy a house? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:50 AM PST So, hear me out. We are looking for a house in an area with a very small number of offerings. A house in an iffy condition popped up. But the price is great. They accept a rehab loan and cash as forms of payment. Someone with that cash will make an offer we will lose it. The house is a good investment: neighborhood with all expensive houses, small town that holds value of real estate (college town), ideal location that we have been waiting for for a few months etc. "Only" roof is leaking and everything else is cosmetic (but roof is a huge investment, we understand that). Even of we invest additional 100000 in the next years, we would be able to sell it and get all back if not more. (Its a foreclosure) However, we do not have that cash. (house is 165, we have 45, could figure out 50 as down payment). We know personal loan in this amount is ridiculous, but... We are willing to pay more in interest as this looks like an overall good investment. Any advice? [link] [comments] |
Anyone have 529 accounts at Illinois/BrightStart? Posted: 25 Feb 2022 04:26 AM PST Looks like the website is down. 500 error. On the isitdownrightnow.com website, it says it's been down more than a week. Anyone know what's going on? I'm currently overseas so I'm waiting for 7am US time to call them.. [link] [comments] |
