    First outside sales position

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 05:36 AM PST

I finally did it! After a year of inside sales for a pharmaceutical company that didn't give 2 shits about me, I just signed my offer letter for a territory manager position for one of the leaders in aesthetic med device. Base salary is 2x what it was before and earning potential is 3-4x higher. Let's go!

25 yr old - 200k in commission coming my way. How do I not blow it?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2022 09:46 PM PST

This will probably be my first and last time with this type of payout. How do I use it to set myself up for longer success? Real estate? Money market?

I don't want to blow it.

    Blew a huge interview

    Posted: 01 Feb 2022 06:39 PM PST

Well, had the chance to get a job making a $200k base, nearly 3 times what my last base was…had some family issues the last 7-10 days, sickness, dog had to go to vets, daycare wouldn't allow our baby, and ultimately blew the final steps of my interview.

Was a disco/demo call, and the stress of the huge opportunity, as well as the anxiety of all the family stuff got to me. I blew the portions I knew well, and just fumbled the entire call. Got another offer today, for a measly $60k, and while I'm grateful, it sure does hurt. It's been a really wild 18 months for me, and I was really hoping for a break.

Any tips on how to overcome something like this?

Would you take this sort of sales job?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 10:22 AM PST

Like the tittle says would any of you guys take a sales job from a starter up company that has their commission structured with base salary plus commission that rounds up from 70k to 100k a year. However if you hit your commission quota for the month you don't get paid the salary since the salary base is just in case you don't hit your quota also no 401k. I'm asking this because I have an opportunity to get out from the wireless industry and hit my first big sales job.

When someone asks you what you do, what do you say?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2022 09:59 AM PST

Do you say "I'm an enterprise account executive" / "I'm a business development manager"

Or do you go with the more modest sounding "I'm a sales guy" / "I'm in sales"

Also what continent are you on? Because I think there might be a pattern

Question: I can't seem to find the right "fit" for a Sales Rep / Account Executive for my SaaS offering. Is it me? What am I doing wrong?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 12:06 PM PST

I am the CEO of an established healthcare IT company with service and SaaS offerings. I've hired multiple people to simply dedicate their time to learning our space, learning our offerings, trying to generate leads and sales, but so far and none of them can seem to gain any traction in the sales space. They can't generate leads, they can't close without me on a call, and they don't follow up with clients. I need to be running the business, not the sales dept. I don't mind paying someone that is bringing in business, but so far it's been nothing but freeloaders that want a paycheck and great benefits for literally NO work. What am I doing wrong? How do you find someone that will "go get 'em"?

What are some good books to read?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 11:58 AM PST

Interested in reading more books regarding sales, specifically about negociating. I've read the basics such as; rich dad, poor dad. How to win friends and influence people A mind for sales

If anyone can suggest a really good book about negociating I would appriciate it.

    As a BDR, why should/shouldn’t bother working a 2-weeks?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:08 AM PST

I get paid on opportunities accepted based on meetings I book. It pays out every following month.

I'm putting in my two weeks in on Monday, but honestly don't want to work it or feel like it makes sense considering there's nothing in it for me.

I could book 50 meetings these next two weeks, but will receive zero commission from them.

    Thoughts on this? Advice?

How do you greet prospects on cold calls?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2022 05:57 PM PST

For me personally, I always start out with a "hey Bob, this is John with XYZ, how's it going man?" as casually as I can regardless if it's a current client, warm lead, cold lead, small account, or a whale.

If they ask who/what XYZ is, I just use that to transition into my pitch.

Some of my coworkers say "sir" a lot which seems too formal and would put me "below" the prospect. Others start it with something like "hey John, how are you?" Which seems off putting/salesy.

For reference, I'm in commercial insurance for Construction/Real Estate, the formal is where I specialize and seems more laid back.

Is This Micromanagement or Good Management?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 11:18 AM PST

    Hey guys,

I work from home as a SDR for a smaller company nearing the end of their start up phase. We have 6 SDRs and I'm one of them, and we have one SDR manager.

My manager is super friendly but idk if you guys would consider these things micromanaging:

-He has one hour long call session with us a week where we share our screen and he listens to all our calls live. -He regularly will message us asking to send reminder emails for meetings, asking if we followed up on a task we set from last week, just general stuff that we shouldn't need reminders for -Tells me exactly how to prospect even though i've booked more meetings using my method. I use zoominfo and he wants me to use sales nav, our company pays for both.

    Are these things micromanaging? Thanks!

Glassdoor top 50 job in 2022- BDM Makes the top 15

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 06:46 AM PST

I think this may be one of the first times the "sales" profession is listed in the top 15- link below. Its showing up at 14th on the list. Its a topic that I find interesting because if you read this board on some days the BDM should be in the top 10. Other days nowhere near the top 50.

I think it boils down to this (there is no statistical analysis in this- just my thoughts): if you have a sales job in a thriving market be it Software (SAAS), Engineering or Medical sales you are more likely to be in the top 15 because of the earning potential. If you are in a sales job that sells windows, cars, cell phones or AC filters (just examples) you are less likely to think sales should be in the top 50. Just my observations.

    Thoughts?

Heading into my last interview for my first medical device job next week - tips?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 02:56 AM PST

It's not a direct sales position, rather a clinical role that will lead to sales training and later a sales position. I have already made great connections with the team and they are definitely interested in me, but I want to really nail this interview. I want to make sure I ask the right questions and answer correctly as well — any industry specific tips?

    Requested Email Templates and Outreach

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 10:25 AM PST

Hello Sales Party People! I made a post the other day celebrating some good feedback I got and several people messaged me and asked for some info about my outreach process and what my email templates look like.

Very sorry for the delay on this, it's been a busy few days.

As far as my role works: I'm aligned to about 230 accounts spread across 10 Account Executives. My role is to increase these accounts cloud footprint using leads that are fed to me. Now as we all know, not all leads are gold so I've had to get a bit creative with my outreach.

So, about that. I generally try to reach out 5-7 times within the life cycle of the lead. If this account is one of my "whale" targets or low hanging fruit they're going to get a bit more attention. My outreach goes like this: Call/Email; Respond to email previously sent; Call; Call/email; Blind Invite; Follow up with second invite; final outreach.

    First email:

Hi Customer, Just left a voice mail – looking to schedule a call to connect on the Azure use as a part of your Account team. What works to connect early next week?

    Second email:

Hi Customer, Following up on the below email. Does [DATE/TIME] work for you to connect?

    Blind Invite #1:

Hi, Wanted to set up a call to go over your 2022 Goals, State, and Infrastructure. Included on the call is a free-to-you technical resource, your Cloud Architect. What works early next week for us to connect? Best,

Blind Invite #2 (If they decline or don't show):

Hi , I do want to be respectful of your time and understand this is a busy time for many of my clients. We are shifting to a more proactive client engagement model, and my goal is to introduce myself as an additional resource to you and your team.

Does another time work better for you? I can move my invite to a later time if needed. Thanks

    Agenda

    • Introduction
    • Discuss Your Priorities and Challenge
    • Explore how other [INDUSTRY] are leveraging our technology.
    • Next Steps

Please let me know if there are additional agenda items you'd like to discuss in our time together

If you are lead based and not account based, a FINAL EMAIL goes a LONG WAY with getting attention.

    Final Email:

    Hello,

I've tried contacting you a few times, and I wanted to check in one last time prior to closing your file. Our team is here for questions, resources, tips, and information, so please give us a call or reply to this message at your earliest convenience.

Please let us know if you need any assistance in the future and our team will be happy to assist you.

I hope you find this useful and are able to use it to gain some attention with your accounts. Happy Selling!

How do I do what you all do? What do you all do? Education? Recommendations?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:53 AM PST

To start I'm in medical device sales. I make $35,000 salary and $20,000-40,000 commission. I will say it's usually $25,000. I have been the #1 sales rep for the company for 3 years with no bonuses or anything rewarding me for my performance. I have won all 3 monthly awards for 6 months straight. However, my passion is tech. I see everyone on here making higher with all these rewarding commissions. I've proven I can sale. But I have a business management degree with no major CIS knowledge. Where do I start, how do I pivot? I want to work for the companies I love like: NVDIA, UNITY, MICROSOFT, etc.. any advice would be appreciated. TIA

    Prospecting under difficult conditions

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:52 AM PST

    Hi all,

I am new to sales. My company produces devices that are mostly used in chemistry or physics laboratories. I am located in Scandinavia where the rules for contacting prospects seem to be much more strict than in the US. I cannot just call or email people without their permission. A laboratory is also not the kind of place where you just show up unsolicited and ask for a few minutes of their time. Due to Covid, there are also few onsite events where you could find new prospects and branch out. I've been using LinkedIn for a while but don't have the feeling this is very effective. It is a work/business related social media platform, yet to me it seems as if people perceive contact attempts more like an attempt to contact the private individual and not the business professional (I hope it's clear what I mean). How would the more experienced sales people here deal with this situation?

Do solar company owners just not give a damn?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:34 AM PST

    I'd love some insight here.

I used to work in sales and 6 years ago become a full time copywriter.

I recently took on a client selling to / targeting solar companies.

The short version is that he has an amazing system based on AI / machine learning that makes it so solar companies can target their ads with precision.

He has a pretty cool background. He worked in tech for a big software company specializing in artificial intelligence and then got into solar sales where he got the idea for this (the leads the company provided were 💩).

He can target any ad by income, credit score, home value, Marital status, roof size, how much sun their roof gets, and very soon will be able to target by debt to income ratio as well.

The idea behind the sales letter I wrote can be summed up as "It's the TARGETING of your ads that determines how qualified the leads are…..how qualified the leads that determines the closing rate and number of jobs….and the number of jobs that determines ROI."

We spent two weeks finding the names and addresses of 100 solar company CEOs and owners whose companies were running Facebook ads.

We even sent out the sales letter through certified mail.

    There have been crickets.

I'm just trying to figure out where I went wrong and would love any insight you all may have on how solar company owners and executives tick.

How much do Azure Specialists at Microsoft earn?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:23 AM PST

I saw this Tik Tok where this girl was saying she chose to work in Tech Sales at Microsoft because of expensive hotels, free traveling, and fancy food. Is this really true? Do you get to earn delicious meals daily? On top of that, how much do you get paid? I was planning on becoming a software engineer upon graduation (projected earnings: about 150K based on what my older friends got), but is tech sales pay comparable to this as a new grad? What skills do you need?

Final Interview Stage: Closing the Interviewer

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:21 AM PST

Hey All, love frequenting this sub and picking up on any tips advice I can get about the game of sales/business Dev. I've worked in an SDR/BDR role for a staffing agency for about 8 months now. My job is mainly to acquire signed contracts from large companies that are having staffing crises and can bring us on for recruiting purposes. I'm about to interview for an AE role at a much larger firm, the interview process has been great so far and I really want this gig. Final interview today with the President of the company, hoping an offer comes by the end of the week. The recruiter gave me a tip about the interview, saying "he's going to want you to try and close him at the end." I assume this means telling him how and why I would be an asset to their company, but wanted to come to you all for some advice on how to do this. Anyone had a similar situation or advice on what might be some good ways to do pull this off?

Inside Sales Representative/Consultant Offer. Any tips?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 09:05 AM PST

I got offered a job as an inside sales rep/consultant and the job looks amazing but I want to make sure I'm going to do an excellent job.

I'm already a people person and socialize amazingly but you can always improve!

    1. What kind of work life should I expect?
    2. What are some professional social tips you could offer? I would think: Introduction > Ask what field the customer needs assistance on > Listen > Bring up solutions that tie into the product > If customer likes these solutions then that's great! Bring up said product which does exactly that

In my head to keep it organic and personal I recreate it the same way you would a friend who's having issues. Friend tells you they're having car issues. You inquire what's going on with their car. They tell you their motor is acting up and they just don't know what to do about it. You tell them some various solutions for motors depending on WHAT the motor is actually doing and they perk up and go "that makes sense! But I can't do that on my own to be honest…" you then pipe up with "I actually know a guy/product that could help you actually."

Obviously this is a rushed made up scenario but instead of coming out the gates like most sales reps do who are like "Hello I'm Bob. Ah you are having an issue with your motor? Here is this product to help you"

When that was done to me I kinda…felt rushed and was seen as a number and would find myself glossing over mentally what was being said to me because my brain though "ahh corporate mandated script"

That feels really robotic and from my thirteen years in retail working with customers when I see a coworker go that route the customers shut down and just wants the event over with.

I did it the friend way while being social and friendly vocally and quite literally talked to them as a friend. Professionally, but a friend regardless and I noticed customers were more open to suggestions and sales and trusted my input more than had I been robotic.

Is this a good way of going about this? What was good in retail might not just work as a call sales rep so I'd love some input on how I perceive social sale scenarios versus what actually works.

Any tips at all pertaining to the entire job would be fabulous and I thank all who took the time to read this novel 😅

Wary of company but desperate for a job

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 08:43 AM PST

Hi y'all, I'm a midcareer teacher looking to transition into sales. I want to do sales specifically because I just really like people and I'm always that friend that persuades everyone to buy/listen to/watch/etc the things I love. My preference is to do something with edtech, but of course the market appears to be saturated with teachers who want the same thing. My plan is instead to go for any SaaS company with a WFH policy, decent healthcare, and unlimited PTO (I have a chronic illness), get my experience, and get into a company I care about. I'm mostly going for sales development roles, because while LinkedIn posts are all rah rah teachers, the truth is that societally, there's not a lot of respect for K-12 teachers, and everyone I've reached out to for more senior roles has had a "calm down, tiger" kind of response.

Anyway, I have an interview today for a company whose product seems, frankly, so-so at best, and whose Glassdoor reviews make the company out to be a highly disorganized brotastic mess, with a history of disrespect for women and SDRs in particular. It also appears that the role isn't truly sales development, basically seems like full time cold calling. I'm fine with that, it's nothing on calling up angry parents to tell them their kid punched another kid, but I don't know if it's going to give me the experience I'm looking for. Plus, I'm leaving teaching for my mental health—do I really want to get into a whole new pool of shit?

Still, though, I'm reaching the end of my rope with this job search, and given the high turnover I have a feeling they'll hire me for my maturity alone. It's not the only interview I landed but it's the only one I have reasonable certainty I will get an offer for. Do I take that offer if given? Do I hold out for something better?

Tl;dr a mediocre company is likely to hire me and I want to know whether k should hold out

Contemplating taking the plunge. What’s your experience?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2022 04:49 AM PST

I'm a very accomplished construction materials salesman working for a fortune 200 company. My activities are a combination of on the phone, in person, and email selling. I've won many awards with my current company. The culture is great and I'm playing the political game very well.

Only thing that sucks is my pay. I'm making mid 50s with about a 85-100k OTE with 2.5 years sales experience.

I'm constantly being recruited by other sales jobs some of which are strictly on the phone. I met the sales manager and VP of sales for one of these companies recently and I wouldn't mind working for them. It's a start up. From what I could gather on Glassdoor OTE should be around 160-175k.

What questions should I be asking this startup?

I've never sold strictly on the phones, so that scares me a little. What's your experience with phone sales? Anything I should watch out for?
