Landlord vs Renter dispute on Pipe Burst Insurance

Landlord vs Renter dispute on Pipe Burst

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:43 AM PST

Hi, my landlord claims that the pipe burst because I didn't cover the faucet during some cold nights. I told him there was an adapter that wasn't removed that still retains water that caused it. So did the plumbers that came and fixed it.

Main issue I think is he mentioned he doesn't want to pay 2k deductible because he didn't do anything that caused the burst.

I've got renters, and he informed me that he will contact the renter's insurance to try to get the renter's insurance to pay for this. I spoke to my adjuster and he said they don't cover structural damage, but this is another department's call, namely liability department.

What can I do in this case? Many thanks in advance.

Is moving from the USA to Canada for their public health care (plus private insurance) worth it?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 06:47 AM PST

I'm thinking of relocating to Canada, mostly for the fact that their health care would cover any hospital costs and I'd just need employer/private insurance to cover any gaps (and dental).

I've had a few "the biopsy might come back cancerous" scares, and I'm terrified of providers denying claims, or treatment being too expensive here in the US if I ended up with cancer or something too costly to treat.

Should I just purchase the best insurance plan my current provider here in the US offers, plus gap insurance for any holes in coverage here in the states, or is Canada the best option?

Accept 50/50 Liability or Take it to Small Claims

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:14 AM PST

My car was involved in an accident with another car out of state. I didn't have collision on my vehicle at the time. The impact was their front bumper hitting the passenger side wheel well and crumpling part of the paneling, then scraping the passenger door and denting it, and a minor scuff on the passenger side rear door.

The car drives fine, although sometimes the plastic cowling on the inner wheel well rubs against the tire when making long hard turns. The passenger door won't open all the way, and only shuts about 98% if the way. The available evidence is the damage to both cars, my driver's statement, the other party's statement, and a police report. There is potentially camera evidence, but the business was being uncooperative claiming 'we didn't find anything' when I gave the time and camera number. Also, it has been more than 30 days since the accident, so that footage has unfortunately been written over.

The police report states that my driver had the right of way. I got a call from the other driver's insurance, having reviewed the claim, and they are claiming 50/50 because they 'can't conclusively determine fault' in these types of 'side-swipe accidents'. I won't get into the weeds on how the accident happened in this post, but if anyone asks, I can provide it in the comments. The other driver's car seems to only have had minor scratches and dents on the front bumper.

So my question is, what next? Is this worth pursuing a small claims case for? I'm going to take it to the shop this week for an estimate. Because of the body damage to the wheel well panel, I can't see this being under $1000.

I still feel like this was 100% the other drivers fault, but I was honestly expecting them to deny the claim, so I'm a bit surprised. I feel like they are only doing this because they know their case of my driver's liability is weak but they are also trying to defend their insured and just hoping I'll take the offer and be on my way.

    Here are my questions:

    • If I choose to take this to small claims court, do I have to file in the other driver's county, or can I do it locally?
    • If I went in front of a judge, would the fact that the other driver took a very long time to get all her information in be seen as giving weight to my side being not at fault? Also, she never filed a claim with her insurance or mine after the incident. I know human factor circumstantial evidence like this isn't considered by adjusters, but would it sway a judge? Her behavior would suggest that she was trying to bury this. Someone who was being honest would have spoken up right away. I know it's not a slam dunk, but it's definitely not a good look to try to hand-wave an accident, then deny all liability when someone else finally files a report. I'm just wondering if this fact would be considered by the court.
    • Since their insurance declared 50/50 liability, and I have liability insurance on my end, would my insurance be able to kick in to defend or subrogate my claim, even though I don't have collision? Or would my insurance only kick in if the other driver filed a third party claim against me?

I'm probably not going to be able to do anything until I get the damage estimate, but I'd appreciate any input or thoughts.

(California) How can I go about searching for insurance plans with Eliquis on their 2022 formulary

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:25 AM PST

CVS Caremark, one of the big three PBMs, has removed Eliquis (apixaban) off of its 2022 formulary. I would prefer to remain on Eliquis given it's higher efficacy and safety record compared to its competitor Xarelto that they are forcing us to switch to. How do I search for insurance plans that are not subject to CVS Caremark as their PBM?

TLDR; Can you teach me how to find a health insurance plan that still has Eliquis on it's 2022 formulary? Any health insurance plan that does not have CVS Caremark as their PBM.

    Affordable Healthcare payment query!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:19 AM PST

    Hi all!

So from what I recall, to qualify for Affordable Healthcare I had to make about 21,500 last year. My income is not the same every paycheck and I ended up falling short, made 19,761. What will happen with the remaining 1739? Will I be responsible for paying that back through my refund?

I signed up to use the whole credit.

    Ugh.

Thanks for any and all help!

    Underwriting Trainee Interview Advice

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:44 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I have an upcoming interview with a large commercial carrier (AIG, Chubb, CNA, etc) for their underwriting trainee position. It'll be a panel interview and I'm honestly surprised I was even offered an interview because I have zero work experience or coursework in insurance. I'm actually a senior studying education with a focus in math and I've realized that teaching isn't for me and have been actively exploring the insurance industry. I've been prepping by researching the company, understanding what specialty insurance is (cyber, D&O, professional liability, E&S), and some reasons I'd want to work for the company/why insurance.

I'd love to hear any advice and experiences you all may have. It's been more nerve wrecking as I get closer to the interview because this is honestly a great opportunity, but I definitely do feel under qualified.

    Thank you for the help!

Should I do anything about this accident?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:41 AM PST

About a month ago I was in a minor fender bender. Nothing except a few scratches on both cars. I filed a claim with my insurance company immediately, but had the claim closed as the other person wasn't contacting me with any information about how they wanted to move forward and my insurance company also deemed me as not at fault for the incident. Should I do anything else about this situation?

    Qualifying life event (California)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:54 AM PST

I'm currently covered under my spouses employer's group plan. It runs from June to July. If this coming July she (we) decides to remove me from the plan is that considered a Qualifying Life Event of losing coverage? Or does it not count simply because I purposefully chose to remove myself from her coverage and I had a choice of continuing?

Reason why I'm asking is because I'd like to switch to another plan that has a better drug formulary for my heart condition.

Cracks in wall and tiles denied said wear and tear

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:18 AM PST

I've live in my house for over 35 years having grown up in it and know every inch of it. Over the past two years there has been road construction in front of my house with constant vibration and digging up the street. A new bathroom renovation did in 2019 and all the tile grout are cracked and my walls are cracked, my bedroom closets and ceiling are cracked. As well as my kitchen. After showing the agent the before and after with date and time stamps he denied any repairs saying it's wear and tear. I'm frustrated cause this will run me $60k out of pocket

Should I contest the claim denial?
