I love sharing what I’ve learned

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:27 AM PST

Recently spoke on the phone with a gentleman who is starting up a business in professional services. Met him because of my comments here on Reddit.

I just loved sharing my experience, the hard lessons and truths, etc.

I find myself truly wishing him future success.

Nothing really to do with this post except to encourage y'all to keep up the work, keep helping the next person with what you've learned. All the pain and frustration you have experienced as a business owner can be avoided by someone humble enough to listen and oh boy do I wish I'd had someone who did that for me.

Online clothing stores that print shirts on demand for free?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:28 AM PST

I'd like to produce some clothing, I have a logo and design. I would like to be able to start a shop with basic options and basically just prints me design when someone makes a purchase, obviously, I imagine the shop will take a % of the total cost and this is fine as long as I don't need to pay monthly fees. Any ideas?

78% of business owners expect to survive COVID: looking back on 2021 American Small Business Trends

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:23 AM PST

My company surveys thousands of small businesses every year. Since we're in the middle of the 2022 survey, I figured I'd share some of the most interesting 2021 stats:

    COVID

    · 23% of business owners reported a loss of revenue. 6% reported increased revenue.

    · 61% of those surveyed reported taking EIDL or PPP loan.

    · 41% needed to implement innovative or disruptive changes to their business (e.g., hands-free POS, new product lines, etc).

    · Only 63% of business reported themselves as profitable compared to 78% the previous year.

    · 78% of business owners expect to survive the pandemic, and 4% expect to fail.

    · Nonetheless, 49% felt somewhat or very confident that small business "post-COVID".

    Top Non-COVID Challenges

    · 23% — lack of capital/cash flow

    · 19% — Recruiting/retention of employees

    · 15% — Marketing/Advertising

    · 14% — Time management

    · 13% — Administrative work

After not looking at this data for a year I was mildly surprised to see recruiting/retention so high. A quick review shows that the percentage has been consistently increasing year after year, so perhaps our recruiting/retention crisis shouldn't be such a big surprise.

Top 5 Motivations for Opening a Business

    · 29% — Ready to be my own boss

    · 17% — Dissatisfied w/ Corporate USA

    · 16% — Wanted to pursue my passion

    · 12% — Opportunity presented itself

    · 9% — Inspiration for new business

I'm super curious how this question will pan out this year given the Great Resignation. I expect "Laid off/Job outsourced" — which only got 7% percent this year — will be much higher. I'd also predict that some pattern around childcare costs will pop up. It will be interesting whether or not the trends the media have been reporting will be verified.

    Top 5 Industries Surveyed

    · 14% — Food and Restaurant

    · 12% — Retail & eCommerce

    · 12% — Business Services

    · 10% — Health, Beauty, and Fitness

    · 6% — Finance, Insurance, and Law

Honestly I expected more construction and maintenance businesses given how much those industries come up in this sub, but I know those areas were hit hard by the pandemic. It will be interested to compare this year.

    Political Affiliation & Generation

    37% — Republican

    31% — No party affiliation

    23% — Democratic

Less than 10% of each Libertarian, Green, or "Other."

    46% — GenX

    41% — Boomers

    13% — Millennials

    1% — GenZ

I imagine there will be a shift in numbers here as the pandemic pushes younger generations into self-employment/small business. But we'll see!

If you're interested in seeing 2022 Small Business Trends and have a bit of time, take the 2022 survey here. We're even giving away $250 and $500 Amazon gift cards to a few survey takers. Open to former, future, and current business owners.

Once the 2022 survey is completed I'll make another post here with the new stats and comparisons.

How could one improve internal communication in a small business?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:11 AM PST

I work in an office with under 20 staff, yet important information about new products, new hires, or strategic initiatives sometimes only finds its way to everyone by chance discussion, unless they're directly involved in the process. This is challenging as we all have a different role, and so it's even less likely that information will travel organically outside of a "division" of the company. To be clear this isn't obfuscation by management, per se, but more of a lack of a web of communication to keep everyone informed, which is crucial for a lean operation like us. Beyond meetings, how does your company handle the task of keeping everyone informed the "right" amount? I'm tempted to suggest a Slack but am looking for a solution that will keep noise to a minimum so that people will actually want to use it. Thank you in advance!

Brand name on shirt and hat tags?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:06 AM PST

What are the key words I would be searching to find a company that manufactures apparel that would have my brands name on the tags.

I keep finding companies that offer "customization" but the tag will be of another brand.

I won't one brand only on the piece.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 07:36 AM PST

hello, i just started a small online business as a side hustle. was just wondering how long did it take for you to get your first sale and the average time period before your sales start growing/becomes a little bit more consistent?

i've read online that for fresh businesses it may take up to 10-14 days to get your first sale. of course, it depends on your industry, marketing etc.

    would appreciate any comments/sharing!

Services That Offer Phone Calls with Target Audeince? - Consumer Research

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 06:59 AM PST

Is there a service which can organize phone calls with certain audiences for me?

For example, If I wanted to sell a product, is there a company that will be able to arrange 5-10 phone calls with people who I could talk to to get a better understand of what kind of things my audience would be interested in in terms of product features, pricing, aesthetic etc?

I could probably organise this kind of thing myself but wondering if theres a company I can pay to arrange everything?

Template or guide a business plan and budget

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 06:49 AM PST

Hey folks! Doing a quick Google search, there are tons of templates out there for creating a business plan. Does anyone here have a specific suggestion for a particularly good one?

I'm in the US. My business is very small (just me, no partners or employees), and my main source of starting capital is a government grant that will be coming next month.

Kind way to keep family/friends from visiting shop?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:42 AM PST

We recently acquired a workshop that's more central to where friends, family and acquaintances are. It's just a workshop/manufacturing facility, no customers. Since moving in, people keep "stopping by" to check it out, or see what we're up to. I don't know why. Some people ask if they can stop by, others just show up. I don't want to be rude, but it's cutting into productivity, and I don't feel comfortable people walking around looking, for insurance reasons and also seeing all our production/intellectual property. I want to put a sign on the door to stop people from coming in but what do I say? I want to be polite and respectful but it has to stop. Thanks in advance for any input!

    LLC question about EIN address

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:42 AM PST

So a friend and I have registered an LLC with my state as 50/50 owners as a partnership. Through the IRS when trying to receive an EIN I listed my name as a member but used his address as his address is listed as the physical address of the business.

Is this a bad idea? Can I change the name to his rather than mine? Or do I need to send the IRS a letter requesting cancellation of the EIN.

Thank you. I have been very stressed about this poor thought out decision I made.
