After 11 years at a company, today I was fired. Sales and Selling

After 11 years at a company, today I was fired.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:47 PM PST

I've been an Account Executive who was responsible for sales and running the strategic accounts. Based on our customer satisfaction surveys, my clients loved how I worked. I've been making 43-50% of monthly revenue. My team was shocked I was fired. I don't have much to say either. We have a new management team who told me today I was causing a detrimental effect on our team, and they decided to dismiss me immediately today. I asked them to be more specific and show some examples, but they couldn't. We had 1-2-1 meetings with my team lead, and he was always impressed by my work and the success stories I shared with him. However, the management team today told me that my team lead was unsatisfied with my results. I couldn't believe this was all happening at that moment. I genuinely loved my job, enjoyed working with every client, and collaborating with my teammates. I shared the farewell message in our chat. Some of my colleagues PM'd me immediately and asked what happened, and I didn't know what to answer.

Going to decline a job offer with a high salary because the company wants you in the office 5 days a week with no hybrid option because 'collaboration in the office is better'....

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 03:43 PM PST

Not responded to the offer yet but will be declining, is there a good way to put this? Honestly it is so backwards that some companies are still following this outdated approach wanting you behind a desk 5 days a week!

My 70k commission check: Answering your questions here.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 07:26 PM PST

Hi friends! I (29/f) got a LOT of questions in my last post that I couldn't respond to individually so I've done my best to answer them here. Transparency around job conditions/path/salary in the corporate world is so important, it's the reason I have been motivated to change jobs and ask for raises. Hopefully this helps!

    Original post here

    1. I work in SaaS sales, I sell government relations software to private companies that help them track legislation, among other things. I've been at this company for 1 year. Prior to that, I had no experience in government relations, but worked at another SaaS company in sales for 2 years. Before that, 3 years in recruitment sales for a Mexico City company.
    2. The reason that the commission check was so big is because during your first year at my company they give you 19% commission if you hit your quarterly goals. After the first year, it drops down to 10%, so it's unlikely that I will get such a big check. The rest of the check was a bonus for exceeding my annual goal.
    3. The average life-cycle for the product we sell is 60 days. I closed 13 deals in Q4.
    4. I've lived 7 years in Mexico City as a US citizen, 3 of which have been working remote for a US company. I pay Mexican taxes and minimal US taxes (see the foreign-earned income exemption). Money goes a long way here.
    5. I plan to invest almost all of this in index funds with Vanguard.
    6. At my first sales job in Mexico City, I earned around 25k USD OTE. My second job (US based), 100k OTE. This job, 220k OTE.
    7. My company IS hiring both AEs and SDRs, if you're interested send me a PM!
    8. It was not hard at all for me to get this job. I just turned on my "open to recruiters" option on LinkedIn and started getting multiple messages PER DAY from recruiters for sales roles. I filtered out recruiters with two simple questions, 1) will it be a forever remote job, 2) What is the salary range? I did not tell recruiters that I live in Mexico until after the first interview. If you tell them from the beginning, they're likely to shoot you down. Once they see how good you are in an interview, they're likely to be more flexible about geography.
    9. The 70k is pre-tax. Not sure how much I'll actually get deposited into my bank account.

What are some questions that YOU have for the interviewer?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:04 AM PST

Going into my first sales interview in B2B SaaS, I've prepped for some potential questions they might ask me.

But what questions should I ask? Maybe about the product, culture, salary, etc?

Also- How do you answer the "What's your desired salary?" question?

    Remote SDR opportunities

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:39 PM PST

    Hi guys,

Just a quick one to get some input, I'm a SDR with experience in the tech sector and currently living in Asia. I've been applying for UK based roles that have been listed as remote as I am a British national with British banking for salary etc. however recruiters are balking at the fact that I'm not currently based in the UK. does anyone have any idea why other than CRM login issues?

    Cheers!

I set up my first sales meeting!

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:53 AM PST

I started my growth internship a few days ago and just started reaching out to people for meetings yesterday AND NOW I HAVE SCHEDULED MY FIRST MEET.

Yeah, the hours are shitty, the pay is shitty (with no commission) but atleast I'm building skills and networking a ton of LinkedIn!

Side note: Do interns usually get commissions on B2B growth internships?

Why do we accept far less RSUs / equity than our engineering counterparts?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:12 PM PST

Title says it. I was listening to cnbc and they mentioned how Microsofts stock went back up because Satya forecasts higher than expected sales earnings. It begs the question, why do we not command a higher portion of RSUs than engineers, even though we directly impact stock prices? No one on CNBC says 'God, that infra team? They're the reason I'm dumping another 200k in AWS' or anything close to that. It's revenue and operations. Why have we accepted such low equity in startups/publicly traded companies, when kids are becoming millionaires due to RSU appreciation and IPO/merger equity?

    Hours

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 06:40 AM PST

Is there any industry where upper management doesn't push 50-60+ hours?

I want my career to progress, but 40-45 hours a week is my stop. There's more to life than work and a paycheck.

SDRs/BDRs in b2b software sales, what’s your calls per conversation?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 02:45 PM PST

I hear a lot about how the amount of calls needed to actually have a conversation vs no answer is increasing a lot.

Back in the day it was 3 calls, then 4, then 8, etc. But now industry numbers are showing as much as 20+ calls just to have one legit conversation which (as many of us know) might be 3 seconds long.

I get drastically different answers when I ask SDRs individually and I'm sure industry, ICP, data tools, etc influence this metric. Would love to hear from some of you.

Recently reorg, without a role - how do I talk about this in an interview?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:19 PM PST

This is new to me and coming from a well-known tech company. If I'm asking about this in interviews, I would love some advice on how to tackle this.

Recruiter said the only reservation of moving me forward is me lacking tech background...what can I do to eliminate this concern?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:14 PM PST

Hi everyone!! I posted a couple days ago about breaking into tech sales and I have been able to secured two interviews at two companies :)!! YAY! I had my first round of interview with the recruiter at company A and it was delightful! The recruiter really liked me and when I asked the closing question whether they have any reservations of moving me forward in the hiring process and they said to be honest the only reservation would be the SDR manage might decide not to move forward because I lack of tech background (the company provides ipaas platform). Then they reassure me that the company can provide training and I can learn the product along the way plus because I am such an excellent sales person from another industry they won't need to tech me how to sell so that is a good thing. I followed up in the email to reassure the recruiter along with the rest of the team that I am a quick learner, coachable and always strive for the best and beyond with the evidence that I became one of the best salesperson in my current industry from knowing nothing to begin with in the span of two years.

I do wonder if there are any extra things I could do to eliminate their doubt. I greatly appreciate any advices and tips. Thank you all so so much!!

Can I find an AE position at a different company? I’m a BDR with 0 AE experience (UK).

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 05:07 PM PST

Background - Currently working at one of the largest Saas companies as a BDR! Been there 1 year.

Since being there I've been a top performer amongst my cohort and have led my team on many occasions (6 weeks + at a time).

Interviews for promotion came up early (6 months ago) and I wasn't given an interview, still haven't been given any concrete feedback. On top of this, many people of the people who were promoted always hit under 50% of quota and had bad reputations in the BDR Org.

I'm basically fed up of the toxicity, awful politics and bad management. I've slogged my ass off to get an interview and they're constantly moved from one month to the next…

Is there any way I could gain an AE position at another Saas company without having AE experience? Or am I best off slogging it out until I get an interview?

Really at the end of my tether.

    Thank you in advance!

Trying to sell my own SaaS software.. have no clue what numbers I should set as a goal (and what expected outcome would be)

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:35 AM PST

Hey folks.. this is an open ended question, but your guess is better than mine so I would appreciate some feedback.

We have a social video conferencing app that three founders have built and are now shifting to sales mode (halp). We're working on SEO, some advertising, etc... But my question is... is there a recommendation on how many contacts we should try to reach out to per week? I often try to email 5 companies a week, but I have no idea if that's abysmally low or appropriate. Are there industry numbers for pre-sales folks you could share? Our main goal is just booking demo's... we demo super well and folks like our software, we just need a good strategy for getting there, and ideally some general numbers we can use to set goals.

    Thank you!

2 Sick SaaS AE Roles - Pick 1

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:14 PM PST

I'm really torn over deciding between 2 opportunities. This ill be my 2nd Job, after a successful and solid 2.5yrs slinging SaaS, I'm excited for my next endeavor where I intend to stay until I become a founder (half joking).

Open to opinions, and questions I should ask myself.

Both incredible companies with awesome employees and amazing products that dominate their markets

Company A - Renowned, well-known, near no competition (Remote)

    *LinkedIn Top Startups

    170k ote + Equity

    Smaller Target of 650k annual

    4.7 Stars Glassdoor

1100 employees (~40 more AEs than Company B)

    $7B Valuation

    Company B (Hybrid)

*Ranked Glassdoor Best Places to work

    5 Stars Glassdoor

    150k ote + Equity

    Annual Target of 880k

    700 Employees

    $4.7B Valuation

Both amazing, both well known industry leaders. I liked the people in both. I appreciate each's products. I'm indifferent on remote vs getting to meet new employees.. there's benefits and drawbacks to both, I'd make the most of either or.

Pls help me decide. This is tough, but ultimately I'll end up happy and it's a "good problem"

    Cheers

    Educate me on medical sales.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:12 PM PST

Hi everyone! I'm a 26 y/o dude. I have a background of sales (three years in an Apple Store, led the sales team three quarters in a row). I now work in the medical field, but not really—I'm the front desk bitch who checks you in for your appointment (neurosurgery appointment, albeit).

All that to say: I'm looking into medical sales as a viable career path. I'd like to focus on spine/brain sales. And I have some questions.

    • What are the best medical sales companies to work for? Top ten?

    • What does your day-to-day look like? From what I've gathered talking to reps I meet at work, it varies greatly.

    • Tips for being in the operating room? I'm not afraid of 'blood n guts,' per se, but I wouldn't say I'm comfortable with it either.

    • What do you wish you knew before you got into medical sales?

    • How is your pay? Base salary? How long did it take for you to make significantly more in commission?

    Anything else helps :)

No raise in sight and basically the same comp plan

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:11 PM PST

Base is $100K and OTE is $176. Last year OTE was $168. That's all well and good but the quota for this year is 14% higher before going from 8.5% to 10.2% of contracts. I've been there over 3 years, have industry experience and also over 7 years total as an AE. Top seller 3 years in a row and have sold some of the larger accounts as well as new solutions. I like the company but I'm feeling frustrated that there's no cost of living increase and that the quota is higher but the bonus structure (total amount) has remained the same. Should I be pissed about this or is this just basically common practice at this point (want to make more; then sell more)?

Does grooming helps in doing your sales job?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 04:22 PM PST

Hello, I (25m) am scheduled for my first sales interview in the tech sales field soon. I was wondering how important is facial grooming in the world of selling. I've heard from a few sources that clean shaven is the way to go and you shouldn't experiment too much.

I personally have two looks, first is plain moustache with a light stubble and the other is light stubble/beard.

Just wondering if anyone had helpful or weird experiences in terms of grooming. Thanks!

    Career Change Help

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 07:53 PM PST

    Good evening, Sales Pros!

I am writing because I need your help and guidance. I taught elementary a f junior high school for 13 years before becoming an assistant principal. Long story short, I burnt myself out…

For the past year, I have made approximately $135-$145K doing door to door sales. I have loved every minute of it, and I have seen a lot of success this first year; however, I'm 33 and I need to be realistic with both my earnings and potential, especially living in Chicago, IL.

What advice would you all offer for picking up the pieces of my life to start something new that is more sustainable for older guys like me?

Thank you in advance for your tips and advice!

Can anyone help me understand the difference between an Enterprise AE, and a Strategic AE?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 07:52 PM PST

Off the bat, I know these titles can vary extensively between every organization, but I was hoping to find a general explanation for some of the key differences between the two. I applied to an AE position with a SaaS company, the recruiter mentioned that there were three separate tiers; Mid-Market, Enterprise, and Strategic. Between answering her questions, lining up some of my own, and taking down notes, I can't remember the exact definition given for the last two.

AFAIK, it goes mid-market, strategic, and enterprise? I could have misheard though, but is it typically Enterprise above Strategic in terms of company and deal size?

    Any insight greatly appreciated.

Anyone want to roleplay cold calls?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:04 AM PST

Have a upcoming interview for an SDR position and will need to do mock cold calls for 15-25 mins to see how I navigate through objections, convey their value prop, and get next steps on the calendar. I have absolutely 0 background in sales, I am a recent grad.

It worked really well yesterday as a couple of individuals were nice enough to help me, and so I just want to try and repeat that if I can.

I can't get meetings and so I can't get proposals in

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 01:01 PM PST

I'm new to sales, 3 months in. I work in security services (guarding not alarms). The sales take longer and it's not as easy to sell because it can be expensive (I have the low end contracts under me and those can still be 250k). I make my calls, connect rate is not high (some weeks it's like 5% other weeks it's probably 50%). I have no problem talking to people and asking questions, but I can't score meetings. 1.5 months of actually hitting the phones and I've scored 1 meeting. December was a bust since the time of year, but since I still can't. I have had a couple leads commit and then backout of the meeting. But still, idk how to get a meeting.

I'm qualifying leads easy. I'm supposed to qualify 5 new ones a month and I'm getting that a week. But still, 0 meetings.

    Any tips?

Is it just me being overly sensitive these days, or are people ruder than ever?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2022 06:23 PM PST

I've been in B2B Software sales for 4 years and I love cold calling. Obviously theres always been ups and downs but our company is fairly well known in the industry, so usually the reception I get from cold calling is decent. Not everyone will be interested, but I typically only get a rude decision maker here and there.

I don't know if its Omicron, the winter, stock market sucking ass rn, or what, but people have just been so.. rude lately? It usually doesn't bother me and I try not to take it personally but I can't help but wonder what's in the water lately. I thought it could be the return of covid 3.0 but even then, the upper management I'm calling on still have high paying jobs and I don't get what they're so angry about.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I just going crazy?
