    A 3D printing side hustle I started

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 11:04 AM PST

Just thought i would share one of my business and how I started.

I was sitting around drinking some beers 😂 and I thought I should buy a 3D printer it would be super cool, just for fun.

So I started to look into how much it would cost and yes, you can spend a lot $$$$ on a 3D printer, but I bought the Anet A8 it's just a cheap China printer for about $160.

It was definitely a leaning experience putting it together but that ended up being a huge value later on.

So after hours of learning how to dial in the printer, I finally printed a 3D case for my raspberry PI.

I got the STL file from thingiverse and it was a Nintendo 64 case btw.

After that I started to think about all the products I could make with the 3D printer. For an example a phone case 3D printed would cost about $0.25 (in filament) but you could sell it for $25 so I instantly saw the dollar signs 😂

I wanted to know how this magical STL file was made and I ran into a site called tinkercad and it's completely free and let's you design STL files.

I now have everything I need but what do I print?

I looked at my snowboard and was like why isn't that on the wall? Oh I design a snowboard wall hanger and print it bam 💥

It only took me a few hours to design a simple wall hanger and probably only a few mins for an experienced person.

The point is that's my first product. I put it on eBay and Etsy and poof I started making sales and poof I created a business.

Now I have 10 printers running 24/7 and over 150 different products I sell.

    Hopefully this inspired someone 🤷‍♂️

What we learned from quitting our jobs and building/releasing a ‘track anything’ app from scratch in 11 weeks

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 05:00 PM PST

A few months ago, my friend and I both walked away from lucrative/stable developer jobs to start our own startup. A week ago, we launched the first version of our product Metriport (https://metriport.ai/) and were (thankfully) already able to acquire our first few hundred users. Now we are here, and wanted to share some of our lessons learned along the way:

    • Unexpectedly, the biggest challenge so far has been managing our own psychology. We were already used to working 80+ hour weeks, however we did not expect to deal with such a profound mental shift with regards to work. The uncertainty of every step along the way is a constant anxiety going on in the back of our minds, and we are both starting to feel the effects of burnout. It's hard to really appreciate the saying "starting a company is like eating glass and staring into the abyss", until you try and start a company. Typing this out even seems a bit absurd, considering we're really just making an app at the end of the day and aren't doing something like running billion dollar factories!

    • Guerrilla marketing > paid ads (for now, anyways). In the past couple weeks, we spent a bit of money (<$300 USD) on YouTube, Instagram, and Apple Search ads. So far, none of these are proving to be as effective as manually reaching out to people/communities who may be interested in the product we have built. Concretely, we can attribute only about ~10% of our total downloads to paid ads. It may be too early to tell, and also may be due to our lack of paid marketing experience, however for now our perception is that early community building is a must before even thinking about dropping serious cash on paid ads. This may be obvious to some, but we were naive in thinking that we could just throw money at ads to start gaining traction early on.

    • A tiny team can outperform a large team. As per the title, it took two of us to build Metriport from the ground up in 11 weeks. Yesterday, to our surprise, we found another startup working on a product has a lot of similarities to what we've built. How did we find the startup? A few of their executives signed up for our app! We scoped them out, and found that they have 25+ board/team members (many of whom are MBAs/PHDs and the like), have been developing their app for over 2 years, and haven't even launched past their beta version yet. It will be interesting to keep an eye on them for sure, but by all objective measures our output turned out to be superior to theirs, with a fraction of the resource input.

    • Work/life balance can quickly become unbalanced. We found that it becomes very easy to neglect things in your life that aren't explicitly related to working on your product. Especially if you work from home, the lines between life and work blur over time. Since launching, our workload has essentially doubled, as we now are accountable to many more things outside continued app development. Believe it or not, but having a full day to just sit down and code feels like a vacation in comparison to all the other stuff. We're finding that working a lot is easy, but fitting in things like regular exercise into our schedules takes even more discipline.

Ironically, we'll be using our own app to get our physical and mental health back on track in the coming weeks. We have been actively tracking things like our caffeine intake, sleep, and work hours in Metriport. We originally built the app with self-improvement in mind, so looks like the hard work paid off, as we get to use it for free 😅

If there are any other first time tech entrepreneurs out there, we'd love to hear about your experiences launching a product! Whether it's stories regarding health or technical challenges, advice for marketing, or anything else, we'd love to hear from you!

How do you decide which idea to pursue?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 05:43 PM PST

I have multiple ideas of businesses I want to do, but all of them would require my full attention. I work a 9-5 so I would work on it after work/on weekends. However some of the ideas would require me to leave my job if it took off (which I wouldn't mind). But because I have all these ideas that I end up with paralysis and don't pursue any of them.

Yesterday, we launched our Shopify website, and so far, we're pleased with the results!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 02:53 AM PST

Prior to publicly opening the site, we created a landing page to collect email sign ups and ran it for a month.

In response to approximately 400 sign-ups for our email list, we set up an early access key link for them. As soon as we have created the site, we also created email sequences for non-subscribers, stating that the store will open today, but that subscribers will make the majority of sales and offer exclusivity as a reward of joining up.

We handed out gift items to local businesses and influencers/content makers in the days leading up to the subscribers.

Of course, we installed all the necessary plugins like Smart SEO, OptinMonster and ModeMagic, which automates inventory, discount, and sale updates by automatically refreshing badges for discounts, new arrivals, and stock notifications. So far, it has shown to be quite effective in drawing client attention.

We made content more diverse. Ranging from images, photographic techniques, videos, and blogs etc; you never know what may be your biggest success with your creativity, so we tested it out as much as we can.

For the following week, we aim to run advertisements as well as publish IG Reels and TikTok videos. Hopefully it goes well! Right now we are at around 60 orders at around $5k sales which is incredible! If you guys have any suggestions to add, that would be great!

I’m joining the entrepreneurial ranks this year boys already got 2 rental vehicles and buying another next month!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 11:36 PM PST

There is a market where I live for rental cars and because I live on a tiny island where people come to have a good time it's like the ideal place to rent your car out.

Here's the thing I'm renting vehicles I purchase for 1 to 3k. Junkers that run. Call them island cars.

I'm renting them out for less than the competition and there seems to be a LOT of people that come here and don't give a shit what they r driving they just want a vehicle.

I am skilled at dealing with people I worked customer service for a long time. I've also always been extremely empathetic and had the ability to read people through messages as well as conversations. I'm using this ability to search for solid people that will respect the vehicles. Because I have them reach out by email if they are no good I just skip them.

Last part of my business model is I don't check licensing or insurance. It's super laid back. Give me cash I meet you at the airport and exchange vehicle.

I'm going hard in the paint this year and my goal is to have 3 more vehicles by July to have 5 out total.

I'm not really looking for advice I'm just excited because it's working out really well so far. My first vehicle I've been renting about 6 months and I bought it 2 years ago for 1000.

Anyone needs a website designed for free?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 11:46 AM PST

I offer designing a website for your business or idea absolutely for free (no hidden fees, watermarks, etc.), but if you end up liking the design I could also develop it for a fair price.

I don't want this to get self-promotive so I won't get into too much details, but as a member of a young web development company we really struggle from the lack of portfolio. This is my personal account thus I'm not trying to promote the company in any way.

So if you have a business and you've been thinking of getting a website for it, please consider getting in touch me so we'll discuss important details and I'll do my best!

Just want to share this milestone with you!

I released daftpage.com (a very cute landing page builder) some weeks ago.
Since then, 231 users have joined and they created 262 websites.

Not huge numbers, but I'm so glad to see that people found the project useful enough to pay for it!

    Have a good day!

    Ideas

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 10:37 PM PST

The beginning of this month I started a position that allows me to work from home and net 62k a year. Granted I'm 23 and living in California it is still a good chunk or change in my pocket. With the awesome opportunity to work from home I do catch myself with some free time.

What is a good way that I can supplement my income in the meantime. I want to make around 200-500 extra in addition to my job. Any ideas or recommendations on where I should start?

Need help with finding a contract template to use when building a pr team, exchanging social media posts for store credit

I'm a small business in a niche hobby that tends to have many collectors.

I hate operating social media so im hoping to offload some of that to a small team of pr girls that a discount code for customers to use, and then receive x amount of credit to use towards getting free/cheap product from me.

I'm really struggling with navigating the contract side of things. I have a few clients and contacts that would be interested but I'm not sure how to do this! Has anyone seen any templates for this?

What kind of business to form? (Quick bullet points!)

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 01:04 PM PST

    Hello!

I had posted a question about this previously and now we've come to some conclusions since then. Here's the situation:

    • started a business w fiancé back when we were first dating

    • he took all liability and therefore all ownership.

    • now, I have aspects of the company and income streams that I am fully responsible for. My original question was "do I form a separate company?"

    • since then, we are leaning towards an LLC with my own DBA under that LLC. He is currently a sole proprietor, so we would be switching to the LLC soon.

Big question : Should we do this or an S-Corp?

    Some other helpful info:

    • I will not be aiming for 50% ownership, but want to have something in my name and some sort of claim to what we're doing

    • I am currently a W2 under the current set up

    • the products/services I sell are under the same branding, but I am fully responsible for them (ads, onboarding, etc)

    • we are planning on getting married within a year and a half or so

    Looking for input

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 07:54 PM PST

I'm kind of stuck right now. I really want to start my own business and fully anticipate doing so this year. But I need a truck, I have a long commute to work though so a truck isn't practical, and the prices of trucks are absurd (4k+ going for 1995's with nearly 500k on them and rusted out). Buying new is out of the question as gas, payments and insurance would ruin me, until I could get up and going.

Has anybody been in a situation like this before? And what have you done? Trying to save money quickly, just not panning out for the time of year. Any thoughts on online side hustles or something I probably haven't considered?

I'm not sure if this is the right subreddit but I figured somebody would have something to contribute. Thanks for reading.

How do I hire a CTO?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 07:24 PM PST

I have a business model and plan vetted out of my Executive MBA capstone, 102 interviews, and MVP website that converts customers manually through our trip building process. We are in a unique space that has not fully leveraged travel technology.

I need someone to architect and design a platform (APIs to vendors, database, ML, UX) to automate and scale our service so I can start fundraising.

My thought is to post on Angel.co. Any tips or advice? Do you recommend a different approach?

When do I need to register my business?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 09:57 AM PST

I plan to start a new (my first) business this year, and was wondering if I need to register my business as an LLC right off the bat or if I should just wait until I actually start picking up jobs? I don't foresee making a boatload of money for at least my first year, but is there a certain amount that I would make and need to pay taxes on? Is there any advantage if I register an LLC first, such as can I deduct startup expenses on my taxes? Do I put my personal funds in a business account first and then spend or does it not matter since I will be the sole owner & only "employee" ? I know there are a lot of questions here, but thanks in advance!

Feedback on startup idea (Shopify app)

    Posted: 14 Jan 2022 08:35 AM PST

    Hi all,

The time has come for me to now share my idea! An idea with a working prototype!

I suspect a little history will help, I'm a software engineer, primarily .net and I've worked in multiple startups, in fact, I'm currently in a startup now.

Last year, I left my previous startup because the call of the wild took hold, I needed to build my own company, I'm finding it tremendously difficult and demotivating to make someone else rich - probably a mid-life crisis.

Anyhow, I took 3 months off last year to start the idea, and the premise was really to understand whether: Can it be achieved, Any deep technical challenges, and most importantly could it be profitable.

The answer was yes to all three! At the end of the 3 months, my savings ran out, so I took on a new dev job (current startup).

With a working prototype, I decided to blog for a further 3 months to start the marketing journey! Whilst not seeing incredible results, the needle is shifting.

I guess enough with the blurb. It would super helpful if you could give me genuine feedback, from the landing page to the concept?

Kanteneo, pronounced "Kan"-"ten"-"E"-"O" is an automated and personalized video curation platform based on events.

Meaning Kanteneo will create videos on "new order", "new product", "email subscriber", "vip customer" and so on - delivered directly to the customers' inbox.

As an example: When a new order hits Shopify, Kanteneo detects the order, finds the campaign, replaces any personalized fields with customer data, and then creates the video, which is then sent.

Kanteneo will ship with an online video editor UI to apply effects, upload fonts, upload images, upload videos, and upload audio files. Not to mention, to cater to the smaller retailers, the system will offer free images, audio files, and video templates to make life a little easier.

The platform exposes integrations to connect to popular email providers, and popular services (Recommendations, reviews, and loyalty programs)

I'm hoping I can post links, here's the landing page:

    https://kanteneo.com

The prototype video is below, please note that UI is very rough, and does not include some features discussed above - still WIP.

Also to note it does not include the shopify installation and the video delivered to the customer.

    https://staticimgs.blob.core.windows.net/staging/video/2021-07-16%2017-18-59.mp4

In terms of scale/reach, this can be made available to wooCommerce, bigCommerce, and other eCommerce platforms.

Looking forward to any and all feedback,

Best Startups Cities in Europe / US? Recommendations / Thoughts / Experiences

I've already posted this in r/startups, but I figured I'll ask here too. I'm Mike, 7yr startup exp., ran 3 startups out of Croatia. Thinking about relocating somewhere else in EU / US. Any recommendations or thoughts?

tl;dr Croatia doesn't have a startup eco system, talent is not great, capital is expensive, etc.
