Hired first employee.. It was a flop.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 03:15 PM PST

We put out a interesting job ad, got a lot of responses. Hired someone who had experience (although not specific to what we needed) and they quit.

Hired a second person who had specific experience but didn't interview as well.. it's only been a week but there are multiple skill and personality problems.

I know there's a lot of trial and error to hiring... can anyone give me some tips or stories?

There are reasons why people don't like buying used items for less $$$. What are they?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 08:40 AM PST

I am looking for reasons people may be hesitant or just don't want to buy used or recycled items from people online and in person as opposed to business'. So far I have personal safety(maybe the person is dangerous or wants to harm them), item reliability & availability(what if I buy it and it breaks right after?), time & travel, don't know where or how, might be ashamed or embarrassed. Can you think of any others?

    Too modern for my country!?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 12:57 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

About a year ago I started an online business for renting homes mid to long term. We built a pretty good website, offer the best prices in my country for such service and offer a ton of free services.(Actually we are the only company that is online only and does not have brokers. Brokers don't have the best reputation here also. High taxes, poor service and a lot of lying.)However we have been struggling to get people to accept the new way of renting and trusting us. Any tips on how to convince people to trust us and try the better way? Anything would be helpful!

Post your struggles with start ups to figure out a way forward together!

Need genuine feedbacks and testers for my app.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 11:29 PM PST

Hi guys. I got an advanced beta version of my app available in app stores and web.

    Notexper

But I need more feedbacks as some users still get some bugs (I don't have bugs much bugs on my side though). Would you be kind enough to have a look at it? I will delete all your data upon request if needed.

    I need feedbacks on:

    1. UX / UI
    2. Communication. Do you understand what this app is after 10 seconds? Could you describe the app in 10 words as answer in the thread?
    3. Post an experience with pictures or videos (some users have bugs)

My full story is available on Medium

    Thanks so much.

Since 2010, i mandated a 'blame & fix processes only' (ie dont blame people for mistakes) and this has helped improve productivity and revenue. I think its because it made people feel safe(r) to learn from mistakes and spend more time on actual business activities. Here's what i learnt.

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 01:52 AM PST

TLDR: blaming and fixing processes only (instead of blaming individuals) improved revenue and productivity significantly

It's very easy to point fingers to blame someone when something goes wrong, but it's always bothered me that blame isn't really useful or helpful.

it just creates an environment where it becomes over-personal.

People will be blaming one another, defending from blame or hiding mistakes - overall a waste of time and energy which can be better off doing productive, revenue-generating work instead.

So when i started my business, i mandated a policy of if there's an error or there is need to blame, let's blame and fix processes instead

    The results?

    1. people feeling safer to own up / learn from mistakes (instead of wasting time trying to play games to lie / cover up their tracks)
    2. and the time saved is better spent on actual productive and revenue-generating activities (which is waaaaaay better in my opinion)

aka more revenue and waaaaay less politics which i hate

If you liked this, take a look at the video I did with one direct example and a bonus application of this approach

About me: Average entrepreneur, dad and husband who is fascinated with marketing, leadership, entrepreneurship and creating a life and stuff that matters. These videos and posts are a fun project for myself where I share about what I'm thinking about or cool stuff I discover.

Is it a bad move to start selling similar products to neighbor?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 01:57 PM PST

I have a storefront and business is currently very very slow. My next door neighbor has boatloads of people walk in to buy.

If I were to start selling the same products as my neighbor (which I'm capable of doing), would this be illegal or immoral? I'm struggling to make rent and see an opportunity right in front of my eyes. There is no exclusivity clause in the lease.

My Business Is Being Attacked! What Can I Do?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 10:11 PM PST

So over the past few months, my SEO business has been growing at a steady rate as I've been using the results from past clients to market my services; however, as more clients begin to come in it has drawn some unwanted attention from another local marketing company. This company is bigger than mine right now, but for some reason, they've started to target my business posting negative reviews all over my Google and Facebook pages. I feel almost helpless as they have more resources than I do to fight this battle and honestly it would take a tremendous amount of time as well. Is there anything I can do to get around this or maybe even just prevent them from continuing this?

How to protect my products in china from my own factory

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 09:26 PM PST

Hello, new user here, I have recently begun manufacturing steel car body parts in china. It took me about a year to find a factory and then months of back and forth for negotiations, the factory has many years of experience and is vetted on alibaba for what its worth. Things were going smoothly, the samples we received were excellent quality and the price was reasonable, we specifically selected this factory for their experience in this field. An issue arose one day when I was on a facebook car group (related to the car model I am making parts for) and came across a post showing our parts in a factory setting, and the poster advertising them as if they made them, trying to gauge interest. I was furious, I sent pictures to my contact at the factory and he seemed to understand and the post was taken down within an hour, and all pictures of our parts were also deleted from his facebook. I was worried but I also assumed that this could have been a rogue employee, since the post seemed very poorly made and not something that a company put out, not to mention that there was still more money that had to be paid on these parts ($150-200k) so I would imagine they were at least pragmatic and would not choose to ruin our relationship over some small sales to end users. A couple of months go by and a friend of mine in Australia who also likes these cars, and knows I am making parts for them, sent me screenshots of a conversation between him and this person that had made the facebook post. He basically acted like the parts were available and ready to be sold and wanted to make a deal, but my friend obviously didn't and reported to me instead. I also sent this to my contact and he assured me it would be dealt with, I also used this as leverage to get a more fair agreement to pay the remaining mold fees since the risk is much higher now. After this things have been progressing smoothly and we have been testing samples and adjusting them etc. until just yesterday when i received a screenshot from my friend that showed someone in a different car group posting a picture of a part saying they received it. It was undoubtedly mine, and my friend was a moderator and thankfully got the post taken down and found out who this person bought the part from and it was the same person as before. It seems that for the time being, this person is only selling or contacting people in australia, at least that i know of. Although frustrating, in the grand scheme of things I dont think small sales like this will have that much of an effect once we get the parts and begin selling and marketing but what I worry about is if it gets worse and spreads, and they become more bold. I am looking for advice from people in this field, since I am relatively new. Is this standard business procedure over there? is it an acceptable loss that I have to factor in? Moving forward, what can I do to prevent things like this from happening, if anything? Any advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    New shop failing

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 04:37 PM PST

I just started my first business, its a corner store in a suburb disconnected from the rest of the city I am the only person that sells food unless you drive for 15 minutes. The suburb population is around 300, I have been open for 3 days and over those days l have had a net revenue of 520 AUD. Is this something that will pick up over time? Or have i made a mistake in targeting such a small group of people?

Any ideas that I can do to improve my revenue?

Started new welding/fabrication business (mostly modifying cars). How to find customers?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 07:15 PM PST

Quit my job, rented a place, have pretty much all necessary equipment and a very dedicated employee whom I'm teaching now. Right now I am promoting my business through Instagram. I'm looking for local car meets groups and dm'ing their followers manually. I have a template message and sending the same message to people who's cars I find interesting to work on. I'm also thinking about providing a normal mechanical maintenance and I have a guys who work for other shops but are willing to work overtime in my shop.

Need some help to create a constant flow of customers.

P.S. I can also provide any service that includes welding.

I know common advice is to not be too protective over "ideas", but let's pretend you believe it's something worth protecting, how would you go about building it up to a point of launching and getting traction before others with more powerful teams and networks decides to do it faster and better?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 07:09 PM PST

Again, I'm not looking for a reasons why I shouldn't be careful about others taking the idea (I understand and agree with that in most cases, and it's not the greatest, coolest idea in the world, but I still prefer to be careful about this one.)

So far I plan to build an MVP using a low-code platform. I have experience building a couple mobile apps (using low-code apps), websites and social media content creation/marketing. At that point, I want to launch while giving off the impression that it is an well-established company (without lying), by relying on good branding and marketing. Aside from digital marketing, I plan to reach out to people door-to-door and telemarketing to get my first 200-1000 users, and establish a good base. Simplified process but that's the general idea to start.

Is it better to go out and look for investors to scale faster? In this day and age, can a small team of 2-3 people become the next Snapchat or Airbnb? If it is as good as I hope, is it more likely I'll be crushed by a team bigger and better?

What benefits do you leave behind when quitting corporate?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 11:28 AM PST

I am a young adult who is planning on quitting their full-time job to grow their side hustle.

What benefits will I no longer reap from working a corporate job?

Off the top of my head I can think of: 1. Consistent Salary 2. Health Insurance 3. 401k Match 4. Corporate Network (socializing in the office, meeting new people, etc.) 5. Corporate Schedule (I will have to structure my freetime and build my own personal commitments)

Are there any other benefits I'm missing?

Instead of entrepreneurs/techies coming up with their own ideas, why not have other people fund the ideas they want, then find the people to build it later?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 05:50 PM PST

I'm not sure how this would actually be executable, as I have not thoroughly thought out the small details. However, the idea is basically a platform where people can post problems and/or potential solutions, along with some amount of money that would be used for all the funding. After that, other people can contribute to the funding and add to the idea if they think it is interesting. From there, the platform would act as a sort of job board for potential entrepreneurs. They would be tasked with bringing the idea to life using the funding provided by the people—that way you allow for developers to focus solely on developing.

I was thinking of implementing some type of voting system where everyone can collectively decide what changes will be made, deciding who to hire, etc. I guess the hard part would be figuring out how to distribute equity amongst all contributors & builders.

I don't know if there's a platform like this that exists already. I thought of Kickstarter, but to my knowledge that's for projects that are already in development. I guess I'm thinking a hybrid between Go Fund Me + Kickstarter? I have no idea where to start, whether the idea is a good one, or who'd be interested in such a platform. However, I felt like sharing anyways.

Is an angel investor what I need?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 04:40 PM PST

This might be a bit outside the normal type of posts. I have a house with a decent lot in a city with almost no available rental units. I'd like to knock it down to build 6 rental units. I have plans, permits and a contractor but the banks have said I don't have enough equity for them to be interested. I'm planning on selling right after the construction is completed so the interest rate isn't even a factor. Would this be a time to seek an angel investor?

Looking to make the leap to self employed

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 04:35 PM PST

I work in marketing as a full time employee covering the full mix, and I've recently gotten a side-gig as a semi-pro musician at weekends. Furlough has already shown I can pretty much keep up with their needs and still champion new projects on 2-3 days a week. I want to negotiate moving to a contracted position with my employer as my main client, and start working freelance.

I'm anxious about overreaching, and opening up my position to replacement; and also to being talked down into less favourable terms during negotiation. I feel I could really use some help from people who have been through or understand similar situations to give me an idea of what to expect, what is reasonable to ask for, and what I should bring to the table.

I'm currently earning £27.5kpa in the north of England, 5 days in office @ 37hrs/wk
