Insurance not covering my mom’s ER visit or week long hospital stay. What can we do? (California, USA)

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 06:50 AM PST

My mom has heart problems (heart disease, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, etc.) and went to the ER because she couldn't breath and thought she was going to die.

She was admitted into the hospital with a blood oxygen rate of 14% and I'm told a normal % is supposed to be in the 90% range. She had a-fib and her heart was all over the place. The medical team was saying she should've come in sooner and that she could've died.

    Thank God she didn't.

Fast forward a week later and her insurance just denied her claim. It reads:

"The request tells us you went to the hospital because your heart cannot pump as much blood as it needs to (heart failure). The plan clinical criteria considers a full hospital admission for heart failure medically necessary when there are severe problems. These problems might include low blood pressure, chest pain, heart rhythm problems, or kidney failure. The information we have does not show you have these or other severe problems. For this reason, the request for full admission is denied as not medically necessary."

I don't see how a 68 year old woman with a history of heart issues. Can't breath. Can't walk. Irregular heart beat. Blood oxygen at 14%. Is said to not to need the hospital.

Her company offers great insurance and she has PPO. So it is possible there was a misunderstanding? Could they deny her because she didn't have low blood pressure or kidney failure?

I'm going to call the doctor and then the insurance company. I hope to straighten it out because this could financially ruin my mom if she has to pay out of pocket.

Are there any other avenues we could go to figure this out? Any resources or people to reach out to?

Thanks so much for any help and guidance.

    Cheers

Hi I'm in Michigan, I am having twins, my boyfriend and I aren't married, can his Medicaid be my secondary?

I have a good job with OK employer offered health insurance. I'm wondering if since he has Medicaid, if I can have my doctor/hospital bill my insurance as primary and his as secondary. Could this be done for my prenatal visits as well or will it only be for delivery and postnatal care?

    Ontario Costs on insurance. SKY-CRAZY-HIGH

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 07:55 AM PST

I recently moved to Ontario (From Mexico) and the first year of car insurance was 3,600 CAD (2,800 USD) for the full year since we where new to Canada/Ontario and where "high risk" due not having record of us driving (Wife and myself) in the United States or Canada. (39 and 38 respectively)

FYI: I've been driving since 16 years old and never had an accident.

Next Year it lower to 2,600 and its renew time next month for 1,900. (Car in question : 2019 Mazda CX-3 AWD)

We just bought a house... and our house insurance for a 800sqf detached house & no garage, is around 1450 USD a year...

I am being paranoid the costs of insurance are crazy high in here?

Fallen tire totaled my sisters car and now what?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 07:47 AM PST

Hi everyone! Was hoping you could help my sister out -

Last week she was driving on a two way road and two cars were coming at her in the opposite direction. The second car passed the car in front of them by entering into my sister's lane and successfully passed by but lost his tire which was left in my sister's lane. Before she knew it the tire hit her square in the engine, triggered all air bags, and totaled her car with extensive front end damage.

His insurance stated that they are not issuing payment to her until an investigation is complete. They said that it could be an auto shops fault if they did not correctly assemble the tire or a third party and they needed confirmation of why the tire fell off the vehicle. And unfortunately her own insurance does not cover rentals.

This leaves my sister without a vehicle until the investigation is complete (which she was told could take months). The insurance encouraged her to rent a car on her own dime and if the investigation resulted in claiming the insurance to be liable, then they would pay her back. I'm afraid that if she takes that advice she could never see that refund and it could another battle with the insurance company on its own.

What options does she have? Any advice is welcomed! Thank you 😊

$98,000 Hermes bag was ruined, insurance agent and manager won't respond

Me and my fiance live together in his apartment in New York. My name was added to the insurance when I moved in. We went with Assurant and he chose the max coverage. We submitted all of the necessary documents but not our agent, their manager, nor customer service will help us get an update and it's been two months. Should I get a lawyer or wait?

(PA) I ncorrect auto claim linked to my account

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 09:43 AM PST

In March an automobile accident was linked to my account. Myself, my cars and the other party on my policy were not involved in any accident. This is a big name insurance company.

After investigation it was determined there was some sort of error and my policy should not have been involved in any way. Still don't know how it linked exactly but either way, the claim is now showing in my claim history.

The adjuster said he would send to underwriting to remove the claim and to make sure I wasn't charged any fees for the accident. He said it might take some time.

Many months later the claim is still visible. Now the adjuster says it can no longer be removed from my history, just in case one of the parties tries to sue me or follow up with the claim. My response is that I was never involved in the first place! Nonetheless the company now insists there is nothing I can do to remove this from my accident history.

Now I am shopping for homeowners insurance and am getting questions about recent claims! The adjuster offered me a letter stating I was not involved nor am at fault for this claim but this just doesn't seem satisfactory. I want their mistake removed from my history. Am I asking too much?

Should I Give a Copy of Geico Estimate to Auto Body Shop?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 09:42 AM PST

Hi, New York resident here and first time making a claim - my car was parked across the street from my residence and someone hit my car on the front driver's side and kept going. GEICO actuary came and gave me an estimate of $2200, which after subtracting my $500 deductible brings me to a $1700 payout.

Should I bring it to one of these GEICO Auto Repair Xpress places? I don't really have a mechanic I like.

Also, should I print out the estimate the GEICO actuary wrote me up and give it to the shop? Or just show up and ask them what their estimate is? Which would be more beneficial for me? The actuary told me if they find more internal damage GEICO would need to give an okay to the work before they do it.

A relative mentioned that sometimes a shop will do the work for less and let you keep part of the deductible, but I don't know about that since I doubt GEICO overestimated the damage. But saving money would be nice, since I'm pretty broke right now.

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated since it's my first time in this situation. Thank you!

Dental insurance options for low-income (time-sensitive)

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 09:33 AM PST

I have lived without dental insurance for a couple of years now. Prior to losing coverage, I obtained X-rays that indicated I had multiple extra teeth that needed to be extracted. I have very little income, but have managed to save ~$1500 and am considering extracting said teeth before they can present any real complications. I would like some advice:

Is there a dental plan available to someone with low income that extends coverage to extracting wisdom teeth that haven't erupted? And, honestly, is insurance even worth it? This would be the only procedure I need, and between the money I have saved and a payment plan, I don't believe the overall cost with or without is substantially different.

I am exploring public options at healthcare.gov (signup deadline is tomorrow :/), as well as student healthcare through my university, but wanted to check in here in the event others are aware of an option I am not. I have been told that seeking treatment at a dental school could help cut costs- if there are any other frugal tips, I would greatly appreciate it

Not At Fault Accident in CA

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 09:26 AM PST

Someone crashed into my car and they were found at fault by the insurance company. Now I'm waiting to get my car repaired but the insurance company is telling me that they don't have to use OEM parts if they are more expensive than aftermarket parts. Is this true ? My car is not that old, 2016, and has never been in an accident before. Is there something I can do to make sure I get OEM parts?

Bf Starbucks health insurance ending at end of month. Started job with new employer today, doesn’t offer their coverage for 90 days. We’re in IL. What are options for the 3 months? Healthy, 24 year old), overactive thyroid is only issue, normal or a tiny bit overweight, non smoking/vaping.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 09:04 AM PST

One parent is 65 and retired (Medicare), other parent is mid 50s and on own plan. He had to take Starbucks as offered thru work. Could he get back on moms plan for 3 months cause not yet 26? (I don't know if it's 90 calendar days or 90 business days for new job's insurance).

First time doing all this so just curious. Job will pay 3 months of COBRA or $1,000 cash as sign on bonus but we need to let them know today. Not sure if worth doing COBRA - he has United healthcare Silver (lowest tier with deductible then copay rather than HSA).

Marketplace says about $200 month with some kind of rebate? So maybe just that?

Also assuming this is a qualifying life event to make him eligible for coverage.

I waited and they didn't move so I turned. The car then took off straight and hit me in the rear passenger side door by where you fill up gas. Who is at fault?

    Kentucky Tornado Question

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 04:13 AM PST

First and most importantly my heart goes out to all those families that lost loved ones during the tragedy that occurred in several US States last Friday night due to the Tornado activity. The pictures of the aftermath are frightening and perhaps an insurance question is a little premature. Your first thought after those that perished is the welfare of the Survivors and, though it will take time, the US has been through similar situations before (earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes) that they should eventually be ok.

Here's my insurance question. You see hundreds and hundreds of buildings that were destroyed from individual small homes to large factories. I assume Homeowner's insurance will take care of rebuilding most of these, but what I focused on last time were the automobiles, many of which appear to be thrown like toothpicks around the landscape. I would believe that if you had comp / collision on your vehicle you would be ok and your policy would pay out but what if you just had liability coverage? Would you be completely out of luck? May folks have older, perhaps dinged up vehicles that dont look that great but get them from point A to point B well enough so they drop the comp / collision. Do they have any recourse after an event like this?

Insurance Questions / Issues after a house fire

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 03:15 AM PST

TL;DR - Insurance company (Farmers) refusing to pay for certain aspects of fire damage mitigation; insinuating that I may be held liable for said certain aspects of mitigation efforts by my contractor; and Insurance company (intentionally?) dragging their feet to come to an agreement on price / necessary work to continue mitigation / rebuild of kitchen, flooring, walls etc. We are going on six weeks and an agreement has still not been made between the contractor and third adjuster. I'm not sure if legal action is necessary, whether or not this is insurer fraud, or what to do. I live in Iowa.

We live in a rural area in Iowa and have Farmers Insurance. On Oct 11 this year we had a grease fire in the kitchen. The fire damage was isolated to the kitchen (entire kitchen is toast), however there was smoke and soot damage throughout the entire house. We went through two adjusters who never came personally to our house to take pictures or start an estimate. The first two adjusters went off of the pictures and estimate provided by the contractor we hired to mitigate damages from the fire. Our claim with Farmers was not escalated to a large loss adjuster until I sent the second adjuster pictures I took on my cell phone of the damage to my house. Once our claim was escalated to large loss the third and current adjuster traveled to our home personally, took pictures, created an estimate and noted that there was "minimal smoke and soot damage throughout the house". This note was made after the contractor had already begun mitigation and cleaning work that was authorized from a previous adjuster. The issue is that this note from the third adjuster is problematic because he claims that hepa vacuuming is not necessary and Farmers will not pay for it after the hepa vacuuming was already completed. The adjuster then insinuates that I may be held responsible for the charges of hepa vacuuming which in not cheap. The other issue is that the contractor is running air scrubbers and "air-movers" (fans?) everywhere in my house to clean the air after the fire. The third adjuster is also saying that this is not necessary and Farmers will not pay for it and again insinuating that I may have to pay for this myself. These two verbal denials from the third adjuster are only the tip of the iceberg here unfortunately.

In an attempt to make a very long story shorter, I will just say that I cannot get the Third adjuster to replicate what he is saying to me verbally on the phone in text. Can I legally record our conversations? It seems as though he is doing some underhanded stuff in order to save Farmers money.

I have recently requested from Farmers all work items from my contractor's estimate that are contested in anyway to be listed in a mass email with everyone involved copied in. Farmers honored my request and listed everything. In a nutshell it basically involved how many fans and air scrubbers are being used and for how long, scaffolding set up and take down, some issues in the attic involving "flex tubing" that cannot be cleaned so has to be replaced, and insulation in the attic. What I am having trouble understanding is that the flooring, painting, sealing, and kitchen rebuild were not among the contested work items which is the bulk of the necessary work that needs to be done.

Another larger issue related to this claim is the HVAC. The heat pump in the basement was a total loss after the fire and needed to be replaced. This work was authorized, however when the HVAC company subcontracted out completed the work they determined that the outside unit also had to be replaced which was not authorized by the insurance company. The outside unit was $6,500.00 and Farmers is telling me that they will not pay for it. The outside unit has already been replaced. Again the Farmers adjuster is insinuating that I will be held liable for this work that was completed on the outside unit. The HVAC company has informed me and Farmers that the outside unit was replaced because it was no longer compatible with the brand new unit in the basement. But this isn't enough for Farmers and they are requesting further documentation explaining the replacement of the outside unit.

Lastly, the final issue the amount of time this is taking. I am not under the unrealistic notion that this will be resolved in a day. However, six weeks to come to an agreement on what needs to be done seems excessive. My family and I are currently living in our camper on our property and in Iowa it is starting to get cold at night. It has been approximately 6 weeks with this third and current adjuster and everything is locked up. No work is being done to my house because the adjuster will not give a scope of rebuild to the contractor in writing. The adjuster claims that his "questions are not being answered by the contractor" and the adjuster will not authorize further work to be done to my house. Essentially, my family and I are just stuck in freezing temperatures in our camper not suited for winter, no running water (we can still use one of our bathrooms in the house), and no way to cook (we have to purchase all of our meals). We can't move into a hotel in town because we have livestock that needs daily attention.

I'm just wondering at what point do we involve lawyers against the insurance company or is it the contractor? At this point I'm not sure. The contractor is informing me that the amount the insurance company is giving is not enough to buy materials for me to do the work myself. The insurance company (Farmers) is claiming the contractor is charging too much for the work to be done and noting "extra stuff" the contractor wants to do that Farmers will not pay for.

I apologize for the long post, but I thought a detailed explanation would help.

The claim is still in dispute today and is well over 100k.

I cannot prove this but I feel that if I had went with Farmers "preferred vendor" for the mitigation work then I would not be experiencing these issues. The textile company was a "preferred vendor" of Farmers and there were literally no issues. No disputes. The disputes only exist with the mitigation contractor which is not a "preferred vendor". However, legally Farmers cannot make me choose a contractor to fix my house.

This is an absolute nightmare for me and my family. I would not wish this on anyone and I'm hoping someone here can either give advice or point me in the right direction.

It should be noted that I already escalated this issue with the Third adjuster's Supervisor and a corporate claims representative from Farmers and still find myself in the same position. I have also reached out to the State of Iowa through the Iowa Insurance Division and American Policyholders Association with no meaningful response.

    Thank you

    Insurance Restoration Company

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 02:50 AM PST

I am currently going through a flood claim that I opened up with my insurance company. This is the first house insurance claim I've ever opened. I came home from being away to discover a small flood in my basement that has affected every floor in my basement. As a minimum every floor and 1' of drywall will need to be replaced.

Not knowing what to do, I called my insurance company when I discovered the issue. They sent out a restoration company who took care of doing some water cleanup and putting in industrial fans/dehumifiers to help dry things out. They submitted their report to the insurance adjustor and we are currently waiting to hear from them to see whether insurance will cover it. Assuming I'm covered:

    1. I looked up the restoration company and they have some fairly atrocious customer reviews from people in similar situations as myself. Am I able to change to a different company than the one the insurance company originally sent out?

    2. If the damage is extensive enough to do significant repairs (tearing floor up, replacing parts of walls), am I able to manipulate the renovations and pay an additional sum? So instead of cutting off 1-2ft of drywall, could I pay an additional sum to get them to just replace the entire wall? Just trying to see if there's any silverlining in remodelling the room instead of making it exactly as it was.

    Thanks in advanced.

New to filing a comprehensive car insurance claim

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 01:25 AM PST

Hello everyone. My car parked on the street and ended up getting flooded during a storm and heavy rains a week ago. I've never had to file a claim for something like this before. Could someone please walk me through step by step what the process is and what to expect?

I live in Hawaii and I have Allstate Insurance. I have auto comprehensive insurance with a $500 deductible and "actual cash value" limit. I'm not sure what this means a well.

So like I said, my car was flooded about a week ago during some heavy rains, but I only discovered it today because I rarely use it and keep it parked on the street away from my condo. I could tell it was flooded because the floor still has small pools of water and I could see a visible water mark showing how high the water got inside. The car does not start and nothing turns on. I can't even unlock the doors or trunk with the key fob.

It's late at night on Monday, so I plan on calling Allstate Tuesday morning to file a claim. I have taken pictures just in case. I have already made an appointment with a Mazda service department to tow the car in Wednesday morning, so that they can take a look at the car and possibly give me an estimate for repairs.

Like I said earlier, I've never had to go through this before, so I'm hoping to get some advice. Also, if someone can tell me what to expect and what my next steps should be I'd greatly appreciate it.

Another question: Should I still tow the car in to the service department on Wednesday for an estimate or should I wait to see what my insurance says tomorrow (Tuesday) first?

Should I pursue any other avenues (private adjuster, etc.)?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 05:48 PM PST

My wife and I about three weeks ago noticed a leak in the kitchen, water coming thru the LVP. Ultimately, one of the crossover pipes from the internal plumbing was cracked, causing water damage throughout the surrounding area, the kitchen floors, and a bit to the subfloor (but was able to be dried.) We followed the insurance agents direction with hiring a plumber to come fix the pipes, and the restoration company to work on the damage.

The restoration company has already dried the floors and we are now awaiting cabinet makers to get out here to consult for new cabinets.

So far I understand the plumber wasn't covered by insurance, but the restoration company is after our $1000 deductible. No major concerns yet but a couple things stick out to me. 1) the insurance company says the floor underneath the LVP is not covered. We have a layer of what looks like particle board between the LVP and the subfloor and they're saying it's not covered. And 2) the restoration company has apparently quoted the insurance company for hiring movers to move our furniture out, and replace ALL THE FLOORS THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE. This doesn't make sense to me. The area in the kitchen that was damaged was maybe 50 sq ft. We have the same floor throughout but we are talking 1800 sq ft of undamaged flooring.

Does anything stand out to anyone or concern you? What are your thoughts?

Dental insurance denies cone beam X-ray, now on the hook for the full amount?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 07:14 PM PST

I think I got snookered. Went to a brand new dentist and had a routine cleaning with X-rays. They did a "cone beam" X-ray - no idea what it was but I thought it was just a fancy office with fancy things. Regardless, no cavities, no need for any treatment other than a 6 month cleaning. Now I'm on the hook for 100% of what appears to be a pretty unnecessary imaging technique for a routine cleaning. Is there anything I can do about this? It's $500.

    Supplemental Critical Illness/Injury Insurance (Rant…sorry)

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 04:49 PM PST

Last year for the first time ever I elected to get supplemental illness/injury insurance, thinking more along the line of an unexpected injury causing accident. Well, last month I was diagnosed with an aggressive advanced cancer. Stress and anxiety to say the least, but hey, I do have that insurance through that company that probably monitors this sub-Reddit Long story short, they have intentionally dragged their feet, played dumb and otherwise doing everything they can to delay ANY payment. Meanwhile I'm dealing with a life changing event, deciding on treatment options and even end of life preparations. All the while not working and not earning because of this illness and they act as if I'm making a car insurance claim! So, there's another stressor thanks to my Insurance company that I figured would've been a knight in shining armor in all this but after missing stated deadlines and unreturned phone calls, emails, etc….they're definitely adding to this anxiety stew that's probably more toxic than the cancer… Sorry about the rant, but I'm sure there's others…..
