Here is a Market Recap for today Monday, Nov 1, 2021 Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:43 PM PDT PsychoMarket Recap - Monday, November 1, 2021 The S&P 500 (SPY) and tech-heavy Nasdaq (QQQ) continued their remarkable rally to once again reach new intraday record highs, with equities carrying on momentum from a record-setting October. Market participants continue to be encouraged by the stronger-than-expected start of the Q3 corporate earnings season, with companies posting robust results despite ongoing supply-side disruptions and labor market imbalances. Looking ahead, market participants are waiting for the Fed's monthly meeting minutes, set to be released later this week, where I expect the Fed to officially start the tapering process, and the October jobs report, which is expected to show a pick-up in hiring after two disappointing months in a row. According to a report by LPL Financial, November has been the best month for equities since 1950. Though some of the heavily weighted index components from last week had disappointed against consensus estimates — with both Amazon and Apple shares dropping after posting weaker-than-expected results and guidance — other stronger results helped offset these misses, with names including Alphabet and Microsoft rallying to record levels on the heels of their respective reports. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Federal Reserve will meet for its monthly policy-setting meeting, which is followed by a statement and press conference by Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. This meeting is expected to either announce or concretely set the stage to being tapering the pace of quantitative easing which has been running at a clip of $120 billion per month. Last month, the Fed announced that amid improving economic data, the process would begin before the end of the year and would come to an end around mid-2022. Given the market has been anticipating the start to tapering for months now, speculation around when the Fed will make a move on interest rates has become a point of particular interest to investors. This week's FOMC statement and press conference are likely to provide some more color to market participants around how committee members are thinking about the timing for interest-rate hikes, especially given the persistent jump in inflation seen in data including last week's core personal consumption expenditures report. Transatlantic Flights Are Set to Boost Oil Demand by a Quarter Million Barrels a Day Posted: 01 Nov 2021 04:01 PM PDT The Biden administration's new vaccine-based travel rules are forecast to boost jet fuel consumption as they bring the U.S. more in line with the European Union, helping revive flights across the Atlantic. The increased transatlantic travel will probably add at least 250,000 barrels a day of crude demand, according to a senior trader at a top oil-trading firm. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Fernando Valle also expects more than a quarter million barrels of daily crude consumption coming back, thanks to less restrictions on global vaccinated travelers in the U.S. and Europe. "We've picked up a lot on domestic travel and should pick up more than 250,000 barrels a day with easing restrictions on vaccinated travelers," Valle said. Air travel remains a weak spot in the oil market's recovery from an unprecedented crash triggered by the pandemic last year, after flights were grounded worldwide and commuters everywhere started working from home. Air routes between the U.S. and Europe have historically been the world's most profitable for business travel. Under the new rules taking effect Nov. 8, travelers from countries with low supplies of vaccines who aren't traveling on tourist visas, and those under 18, will be exempt from the vaccine requirement. George Dix, an oil analyst at Energy Aspects, sees the boost from the new rules at 200,000 barrels a day of increased oil consumption this quarter. "We expect the main boost to be from U.S.-Europe flights as U.S.-Latin America was already operating close to pre-virus levels, and several other countries in other regions are still some way off from opening up for international flights," Dix said. For airlines, the recovery is coming with a higher cost for jet fuel, denting their earnings. [link] [comments]

Thoughts on what’s been happening with PYPL? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 04:10 PM PDT In an experience that taught me the limitations of stop limit orders, I am currently holding PayPal stock at a significant loss (bought near the ATH). And some call options that are negative, in a move that will optimistically be "buying the dip" or less optimistically "throwing good money after bad." Any insights on what's going on here? Original drop was because of earnings. Then it went down from there. Next was the Pinterest rumor drop. Then a temporary increase when they backed away from that idea (when I stupidly missed an opportunity to profit on an option), only to then drop further. I'm worried about what will happen to the stock when earnings are announced next week. [link] [comments]

The metaverse and what the heck is it? Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:03 PM PDT Discussions of the metaversion and web2.0 are brewing on much smaller niche subs. As FB comes to market with "Meta" and its products.... we will see the commercialization of the "metaverse" very soon. I'd really like to see more discussion of what the metaverse is on bigger subs like this. It all seems very exciting and new, as well as potentially having a huge impact on the public markets with the products it will bring. A write up on the ELI5 version here.... but really would like to hear what you think it will be and how it will affect your take on the markets. [link] [comments] |
