Started my business and now I'm paranoid all the time!

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:16 PM PDT

Hello Reddit, thanks for taking time.

I'll be straight forward as I'm struggling to write down my feelings.

Mid 20s male in my first week in mobile auto repair. I'm studied and certified with 5 years of hands on experience in a reputable shop. I've mopped the floors, cleaned engine bays to repair cars, to front office, parts and sales.

There's really nothing going wrong... Messages have been pouring. I been fixing with ease like routine. My customers are very happy with me. Yet I am very worried. Never felt this way before and I can't stop thinking about all the possibilities of failure.

*What if my truck breaks down? *What if my tools get stolen? *What if I get hurt or sick? *Car accident!?

I have two trucks and I'm giving more maintenance to them than I ever had. I went to the doctor to get a general check up. I'm triple checking my work on customers cars. But there is always something that triggers a "what if...?" I go for a workout to ease it but it always comes back. I don't even drink or party anymore.

Has anyone experienced similar? Coping tips?

    Scheduling software for service-based business

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:07 PM PDT

I have two types of appointments for clients to schedule: consultations at their home, and lessons at a location that depends on the client's needs and where they live.

I travel to nearby cities for both consultations and lessons, and I have yet to find a scheduling/booking app that ALLOWS ME TO BLOCK TIME BEFORE AN APPOINTMENT to account for travel time!

Some clients live up to an hour drive away. I don't want to have to cushion appointments an hour apart, because most lessons are at the same location, and I'd like to be able to stack those appointment types since I don't need time to prepare between lessons.

For example, if the clients wants to book an appointment at 6pm, I want for them to see an option for "6-7pm" but to have the time on my end blocked from 5pm-8pm if in another city.

    Should I get a lawyer?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 06:43 AM PDT

I have a business which is basically digital Marketing/social media.

I had a client back in august that was referred to me. We worked together for the whole month and then randomly sent me an email telling how my services were sloppy, how I was sloppy and she wasn't happy with what I provided. She went down and listed everything she was upset about.

I sent her an email debunking all the things she was claiming never happened or she was never provided. The email was long, but I broke everything down.

I was very upset she was trying to discredit my buisness and lying about what I did and did not provide her.

She put in a claim to dispute her full charge claiming NO services were provided, but there is a clear email trail, a google doc, text messages AND the content I created and edited is still on her social media profile.

I keep providing evidence that she did recieve the services (and that she signed a contract stating she would not be able to receive a refund, but instead all work would be provided until the final day of termination).

Because of this, the money was taken out of my account and is being held as both banks review the information. This has completely fucked my bills? My families bills (I support them too) and idk if I should hire a lawyer or not.

    The money was over $1500

    Facebook reviews confusing

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:31 AM PDT

Hi there everyone, my partner has recently started a small business and as anyone does relys on reviews heavily. On her Facebook page the reviews seem to be broken for some people but not everyone, very frustrating when trying to get reviews from her customers.

Anyone have any idea why this is?

He page is Dog Beginnings if anyone wanted to look it up and see for themselves.

    Cheers all

Squiring a business with no idea what to do.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:17 AM PDT

My friend and I are acquiring a business that makes juice/shakes. Our plan is to be fully organic. The people now pay market for everything, they just go to Walmart or what ever.

I want to source locally and figure out how to sell these, but I have not done any of this.

Can I just go up to a farm and ask them to let me buy from them? Try to negotiate prices? I don't know how to find vendors.

I don't know where or how to advertise either.

This feels like a huge undertaking.

    Pricing Structure for eWaste Removal

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:52 PM PDT

Hey folks - hoping some of you would be willing to take a quick poll to help me decide on how to structure my fees.

I'm running an eWaste Recycling business, with the main service being pickups for residential and commercial customers. My state does not allow for anything electronic to be thrown in the trash, and many of the city-run organizations charge obscene fees for even just a single item to be recycled, so I'm aiming to capitalize on this. In addition to the pickup fee, I would be making money from breaking down obsolete/non-functioning electronics for valuable metals and parts, and reselling anything that works at a discount.

My initial thought was to charge based on weight - $50 for the first 100 pounds of eWaste removed, plus $0.25 per pound beyond that for most items, and $0.75 for the more difficult/hazardous stuff (lithium batteries, TVs containing lead, etc). But after some consideration, I can see two problems with this: One citizen wanting to recycle a rather small item would be paying $50 and not necessarily getting the full value from my pricing structure. Alternatively, if I have businesses loading me with extremely low-value and time-consuming items (such as printers), I'll find myself getting bogged down with lots of menial work without enough compensation. So I began to consider charging per item, but that also presents problems, as $5 per laptop for 100 pounds of laptops is going to be twice as expensive than simply charging the $50 for all of them.

I would love to get your thoughts on this. If you own a business, try to consider what you'd be willing to pay for someone to remove electronics from your worksite. If you don't own a business that would benefit from this, consider what you'd pay for a private recycler to pick up your old TVs and VCRs. If you don't like any of these ideas, please feel free to critique my thinking and offer alternatives.

Doing business without license- will taxes expose my error?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:50 PM PDT

I have a cleaning business that my brother and I started this July. Back when I started it I saw an article that said you don't need a business license to have a cleaning business so I never got one and I never looked at it again… until I did more research recently and found out that I was supposed to get a license by sending an application to my city before starting.

We've only had 4 clients and we're going to be doing an estimate for two new clients this week. 3 were one time cleanings and they were cash payments, but one has been recurring since August and we received payments for it through Venmo. So when we get a 1099 from Venmo and file those taxes, will they see that we've been doing business without a license and then penalize us? My brother is in college and I am in high school, but I am going to assume that if we are penalized, the government will not care about our age.

As a small business how much do you want/ can afford to pay for a regular website? And how much for an e-commerce website? What would you consider a ‘steal’?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:15 AM PDT

I'm a business owner that provides high-quality websites with good designs. I aim to/ only work with high-paying clients that need a really creative site, but I find that a lot of small businesses reach out that I end up declining because they can't afford it/ they dont want to invest so much starting out, plus most just need a simple site. After seeing a few small business owners get bashed on r/forhire for wanting a site below a thousand dollars and looking for high-quality freelancers on upwork at a reasonable rate to outsource some of my web development work, I can see the struggle small business owners have for wanting a good website for a great deal. Which is why most of them resort to building the site themselves.

After some brainstorming, I want to try something different for my business. I can still make profit if I build simpler but good quality websites with a pretty good design for a much cheaper price and it would take me less time than my normal projects. Since you'll be my consumers how much is a great deal for a 3-5 page website with the essential things most businesses need for their website (their services, testimonials, images, form, etc.).

I want to help you out so be open and honest with how much you want to pay/think is fair/you can afford. It's okay if you think it's too low, but also be a little ethical and don't take advantage of this. I'm open to all your answers. I was thinking $500-$625. I want it to be so affordable everyone would want to buy it. Even students/ people who just want to build a portfolio or transform their resume into a visual website.

Eventually I can make a system to automate this and reduce the price even more.

Small computer store to fill in the gap of Best Buy leaving

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:23 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'd like to start a computer store after our Best Buy has recently closed down. Unlike Best Buy I would like to cater to small businesses with that tech savvy person as well. Basically in one of my prior jobs we charged by ysthe hour and there were a few customers that had someone onsite that was more than capable of doing it.

I'd like to save businesses money by supporting thise tech savvy users and letting customers hook PCs up themselves. That means business PC's would need to be white gloved.

On the consumer side, the main focus would be gamer's and every computer would have a graphics card in it. Ranging from a GTX 950 to the 3000 series. No onboard graphics.

I'd also like to sell basic computer parts such as RAM, Motherboard, power supply, etc. for the gamers to upgrade their PC's.

And finally smart home equipment such as Nest thermostats and Philips Hue bulbs.

Everything would be used and new, and I've been considering a trade in value on old PC's.

What do you think? Would it be profitable?

Real estate is limited, so big items like TVs are out of the question.

Any advice on where to start would be helpful.

How to calculate ROI of a debt to fund an existing business?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:05 AM PDT

So a few months ago while watching Shark Tank, I was wondering when it makes sense to take on debt instead of equity. After a while of thinking & researching, I arrived at the conclusion that "only leverage when you're certain that":

    - ROI > Interest

    - Disposable Income [(Total income, less capital gains = Revenue), less necessary expenses & investments] > Monthly repayment (monthly portion of debt + interest)

Along with a few other factors to consider like risk tolerance, benefits of a partner, etc.

    1. I'm not sure this conclusion is sound, so please advise me if you have anything to add/correct.
    2. Now as I think about it, I realize it might be easier said than done. (Assuming my conclusions above are correct) If I were to take on debt to start a complete new investment, like buying a house, it may be easier to see the ROI of the debt because it's basically the ROI of the house (e.g. rental + appreciation). But I wonder how I should apply the rules above to a situation when you take on debt to fund an existing business.

Say X has put 10k into her business. She made some money from it, but after a year, her business is failing. Let's say she is getting zero ROI from it. Now she realized she needed more capital for marketing & fulfilling a big order from somebody who is interested in her product. Let's say this is enough for her company to take off. So she figured she needed 5k, and she believes the ROI of the company will be 100% a year (15k) and stay that way for many years to come. (Forgive me if my example is stupid because I just made up these numbers for the purpose of illustration). Now my question is what is the ROI of the debt?

On one hand, a return of 100% a year of the whole company is credited to every single penny invested, which means the new 5k debt has a return of 100%.

On the other hand, without that 5k, her business would be dead. i.e. The 15k per year in return is made possible because of the 5k debt. Can it be said that the 5k debt generates the 15k in return? If so, the debt has a return of 300%.

I'm quite confused how the ROI of the debt is figured out in this situation.

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

pitching local biz to big box retailer like Whole Foods?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:06 AM PDT

Hi there, we are a tiny local small biz. Couple months old with traction (press, customers). What can we expect during a pitch to the merchants at big box retailers such as Whole Foods or REI? Really new at this and have read all the online blogs, yes.

I'm confident we've got a unique product but other than standing out and knowing your numbers/keystone pricing, giving them 40-60% margin, what else do they look for?

Do they require official product and safety testing on your product? Official stability testing report?

Emphasis on the local small biz..we're about as mom pop as it gets. Thank you in advance

Business opportunities for areas near beach?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:05 PM PDT

My grandma told me she'll give me her lot near an undeveloped white sand beach. It's very pretty and good tourist destination. The problem is it's too far from where I live and work. I also don't have lots of experience in business. What business would be good with minimal supervision? Should I just lease the lot?

Leaving LLC in it's infancy - no payout?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:44 PM PDT

I am part of an LLC that was started under a year ago. The initial business scope has changed drastically and I am looking at leaving. We never had much of any customers - I would not care for any kind of payout/my 'percentage' of whatever assets the company has.
Is it best practice to detail this in the "resignation letter"?

    Asian grocery (korean grocery) Markup

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:41 PM PDT

Hello I'm new to this community as well as business. I'm really confused on how to price my products. My business is a small Korean grocery. We don't have fresh Veggies or fruits. Most of our products are shipped from korea. In this case how much markup percentage should I use? The former owner used to markup 60% but the shop was famous for being expensive. So we reduced it to around 40% is this ok? I don't have any employee, the rent is $9000 a month and our sales is 35k a month.

How Do I Tell A Client No?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 04:44 PM PDT

Over the past months, I've worked with a client who runs a service business out in Colorado. I help him with SEO for his business in order to drive more leads to his company every month and recently he recommended a friend to me who also runs a local business.

Now you may be asking yourself what is the problem and don't get me wrong I'm extremely thankful for more business; however, this new potential client keeps asking me for discounts as the price I charge him was higher than his friends. Now I'm not at the point where I feel comfortable turning away clients as my business is still relatively small in size and I could use the business, but at the same time, I can't give him a discount because his industry is highly competitive and would take a good amount of resources to create results. Is there any way I can say no to him without coming off as rude or potentially losing this client?

Need a Recommendation for Inventory Management System for Rental Business

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 02:22 PM PDT

I'm helping to implement an inventory management system for a small but growing product rental business, and could use a recommendation. Currently, equipment inventory is listed in an off-line spreadsheet that is not connected to the Quickbooks account where invoices are generated, which is super inefficient. I'm looking to set up an inventory management system that is as hands-off as possible, ideally that can be managed using using phones to scan barcodes or RF tags.

The landscape for this stuff is pretty big, so I'd love recommendations from anybody out there who has implemented something like this successfully, particularly for a rental business of some kind. Thank you!
