Posted: 21 Nov 2021 04:25 AM PST Hi folks. I'm taking over ownership of a new home mid way through construction in Ontario Canada. I'll be acting as my own general contractor on the build and doing the bulk of work myself. I have several other residential properties and auto through a 'traditional' broker. My broker has shopped this construction project around and none of the companies they deal with will insure the project. Any Canadian insurance people on here who can shed any light on what's going on here? I know an owner builder is less common but it happens all the time. There must be companies willing to insure these sorts of things. I just don't know where to look. Presumably another broker and I'm going to call around but interested if there's suggestions here. Do car insurance policies cover property stolen from a vehicle that was broken into? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:14 AM PST Here's the situation: a few of my friends went out to a bar this evening to celebrate my buddy's birthday. While they were inside, someone came along and broke into three of their cars. Busted windows, etc. One friend had a broken window but nothing of value stolen, another had about $300 of clothes and makeup taken, and the third lost about $1300 worth of trading cards, etc. They all came to the conclusion of "this sucks, can't have shit in Detroit". But what I'm wondering is: could they make a claim on their auto insurance under vandalism protection to cover the items stolen? [link] [comments] |

Had someone fall on my property Posted: 20 Nov 2021 08:23 PM PST Earlier this year I had hired my neighbor's son to help turn my shed into a spare room. He wasn't a licensed anything, but he did have experience in construction and I had seen him build do alot of cool stuff for his parents house. It was a simple pay him cash and he works on the shed deal. Well, after a few months his brother moved into their parents house too. One day, I come by and his brother is helping him lay laminate flooring, I met the guy and that was pretty much it for our interactions. We (my wife and I) wanted a small loft put into the shed, which my neighbor's son started to do. Well, one day my sister calls me while babysitting my kids and says my neighbor's son just stumbled out of our backyard all bloody and fucked up. I called him and eventually he explained that it wasn't him, his brother decided to go over and do some work on our shed while we were away and he fell off a ladder that Son had put up. I asked him if his brother was ok and he said everything was fine, he had a concussion but that's it. I'd ask every now and than how he was and I would be told that he's fine. A few months later an attorney comes to our house and says he is representing Brother and my wife, scared and surprised, let him go back and start taking photos. I called Son and asked what the hell is going on and he said he couldn't fucking believe it and had no idea what was going on. As I was pulling in my driveway Brother is painting their new driveway and I asked him what was going on, long story short (too late) he said he had been trying to reach me and got sick of trying so he called an attorney. I showed him my phone and said I had no calls from him and I had no problem going through my insurance for his injuries. I called my company immediately and explained what was going on, but I did send some video and photos of the guy doing yard work after he explained how he needed all these pins and surgeries on his knees and arms. After not hearing from my insurance company for months they send a guy out to take photos and get my side of the story, so I take him to the shed, explain that everything was built by Son and that some of the claims the attorney was saying we're nuts.
I then get a copy of the demand letter sent to me by my adjuster along with a letter that says: "Based on the information available to us at this time, we believe that the total value of the above-referenced claim could exceed your policy limits. In addition, if a lawsuit is filed in this case, and this matter was to be tried before a jury, a verdict in excess of your policy limits would be your responsibility. Therefore, this is to advise that you may wish to consult an attorney at your own expense to protect you from any uncovered or excess exposure. By providing this information, we are not advising that you need to retain an attorney, but you have the right to do so if you wish." Now what's confusing me is in the demand letter it says his damages equal about 25k, but they are asking for the absolute max our policy offers which is a fair amount more than that. I understand the attorney is trying to get a payday but, if the demand letter specifically says what they need is significantly less than how can the claim exceed my policy limits, even if they are going for the max amount? Is this letter just a business as usual thing because on one hand it says "you may need an attorney" and then it says "don't worry about an attorney" Im coming here for questions because, for the life of me, I cannot get ahold of my fucking adjuster and my wife and I are truly losing sleep over this. We are both afraid our lives are going to be financially ruined because some guy decided to come work on our shed without our permission and hurt himself because of his brothers planning. Edit: I completely forgot to add that I live in Florida [link] [comments] |

Homeowner's insurance: what counts as a slope? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 01:56 PM PST Hi all, New homeowner here in the process of buying home insurance. One of the questions asked is if the house is on a slope. The land around my house is not completely flat; there is a very gentle slope of around 15 degrees such that my house does have a walk-out basement. My realtor says that the answer to this question is 'no', and I suspect he's correct, but technically what qualifies as a slope from an insurance's standpoint? I don't want to be in a situation where an insurance claim is denied based on 'falsified' data, and of course, don't want to pay higher premiums if I don't have to! Thank you in advance! Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:12 PM PST State of SC. My employer offers several supplemental insurance policies such as disability, critical illness, life, etc. I signed up for all of the above mentioned ones and I just noticed that in between my 2 Oct paychecks, they stopped withholding the amount for the critical illness. I looked on to the insurance broker website we use and it says I waived coverage for it. Plan year May 1 to April 30. I've received no notification. Can they just cancel it for no reason? If so, were they required to notify me? [link] [comments] |

Today I got a notice saying I never sent them the title. I do not have any paperwork for that car. What should be the next step? Location Missouri, Jackson County [link] [comments] |
How can I submit an accident report within 72 hours if I don’t know the damages yet? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:34 PM PST About 24hrs ago, I was rear-ended and pushed into the car ahead of me on the freeway. Police made their report, and insurance information was exchanged. My car was towed from the scene. It was a Friday (no clear language on dmv website if weekends are omitted in count). My insurance (State Farm) hasn't given me an estimate yet, and one of the lines on the report form is the dollar amount of damages to my vehicle. I live in Oregon and this is what the form looks like. Bottom left of page 4. Any insight is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Insurance issues between tennant (me) and landlord pertaining to liability and umbrella Posted: 20 Nov 2021 06:12 PM PST I rent 1 unit in a 2 family house. The owner/ landlord lives in the other unit. He is telling me that his insurance agent is requiring me to increase my auto insurance liability limits to meet his umbrella insurance requirements (much higher than I need). I also own a dirtbike (off-road, non-street legal motorcycle) that is kept at the property but operated elsewhere. CT doesn't require liability on dirtbikes and the value is not high enough for me to insure it for theft so I don't carry any type of insurance on it. The landlord is also telling me that his agent is requiring me to insure the dirtbike for liability with limits that meet his umbrella's requirements. And if I don't do such, they wont renew his policy.. Lastly, I am also being told that his premium will be increasing due to me now having a dog. I asked how this all came about and he said that he had a meeting with his umbrella agent about renewing for this coming year and they asked about any changes or additions to anything or anyone in the "household", such as motorized vehicles, boats, pets, etc. He told them about me and the dog and dirtbike and considers me to be part of his "household". I told him that he is misunderstanding the agent's question and that a 2 family house consists of 2 separate households. We do not share any living space. The home is zoned as a 2 family and it is an official lease arrangement. The agent has him convinced that if I cause bodily injury to someone with my car, dirtbike, or dog, REGARDLESS of whether it occurs his property or somewhere else, that he could be held liable. I find this extremely hard to believe. Does anyone have any insight into this subject? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Nov 2021 05:01 PM PST Hello everyone. I'm in a strange situation. My father had two life insurance policies in the country of Lebanon. The proceeds are supposed to go to both my mother and I. We both live in the United States. However, Lebanon is in the middle of an unprecedented economic crisis (even by the standards of Lebanon) and the life insurance company after months of slow decision making has told us they will not send the money to the United States by wire transfer. US dollar is an accepted currency there but right now there are restrictions on withdrawing dollars from banks and on sending US dollars abroad. The local currency has lost massive value compared to the dollar recently after being pegged at the same rate for decades. We have a lawyer working on our behalf in Lebanon on issues of inheritance and this life insurance issue among other things. She has told us that they MIGHT be willing to send part of the payout by wire at some point in the future. It's unclear if this is actually happening, what amount it will be and when it will happen. She is negotiating with them to get this, but they gave said they would not send the full amount no matter what by wire. We have been waiting for a long time, sent different paperwork several times, went to Lebanon in person in 2019 to submit initial paperwork of his death to the insurance company and government. Now we are considering going in person to collect the payments in check form since the wait for a final decision in wire transfer is taking a very long time. However, our lawyer is telling us that foreign checks from Lebanon will not be usable here to deposit in our bank accounts specifically because they are from Lebanon through a Lebanese bank. I asked both Chase (my bank) and US Bank (my mother's bank) about this. Chase told me about a list of origin countries where they restrict checks from and Lebanon was not on the list. On the other hand, US Bank has Lebanon listed as a high risk state for check origin so it will effect how they view the check and whether they accept it. So it seems to me that Chase Bank will probably accept the checks but the lawyer has me worried. Traveling to Lebanon right now is risky (in general) and costly. My mother is over 70 so it will be hard on her and there is also COVID (we're both vaccinated but still concerned especially for her and about passing it to my pregnant wife who is also vaccinated). If we go in person and receive the checks but banks here do not accept them then they are worthless to us and we spent money on the trip and we through all that trouble. But, I'm also sick of waiting on the possibility that maybe one part will be sent to us at some unknown future point. Lawyer is advising us to wait on an answer from the insurance company about the partial wire transfer. We would both have to go because the policy pays to both of us separately and they have so far refused our legal power of attorney in Lebanon that my mother has given me which from what I understand is absolute in all matters and even specifically mentioned this life insurance in it so I'm confused about that. Any advice on what to do would be appreciated. I'm thinking of contacting the Treasury department here and asking them about this issue also. Thanks for reading the lengthy post. [link] [comments] |

Requesting some advice for a deer auto claim Posted: 20 Nov 2021 04:02 PM PST Sorry for the long post TLDR at bottom. Hey all, so around a month or so ago I was hit a deer on my way home in the morning from a friends house. The deer impacted just to the right of the left headlight and then I lost track of it as I pulled over to the side. Turns out when I got out of my car to see if it was still drivable it was wedged under my front fender just in front of the tire. Important to note I have never been in an accident of any kind other than when someone hit my mirror in my car in a parking lot so I really had no idea what steps to take from here. My first thought was to get the deer out of the road if and if the car was drivable to get it home. In my state (MI) they usually dont give police reports for deer collisions because of how common they is what a person that stopped to make sure I was alright said so I just limped home. So two errors I am already going to call myself out on. Not taking pictures of the accident site and not calling anyways. So I go home make the initial claim and when it is asking to click the description of damage I click the left side and the middle of my hood because they were the most visibly damaged thinking if when I brought it in for an inspection I could update it if there was any damage under the car etc. I bring my car to get inspected and they find that on the right fender there is a hole where the deer was wedged and they take picture of it and advise me to add it to my claim which I think makes sense. All goes silent for about a week with them hearing nothing from my insurance and when they call me for an update to say the right side isnt going to be covered so I can pay it out of pocket if I want it fixed which I say alright that dosent make much sense but alright. The total amount for the claim was just over 4k and the right fender was just over $200 to fix. I ended up calling my insurance to explain that I messed up on the diagram part and that I understand why they denied that part of the claim and move on to picking my car up. Turns out my insurance (USAA) basically ghosted the repair shop and had no communication with them because nearly 2 weeks after I picked my car up I get a call from an adjuster and this is where things get interesting. He calls me and says he has some questions for about my claim and that if it was alright if he recorded the conversation. I said sure no problem and basically retold the same thing I told the other insurance agent and the shop. Well turns out when I got my mirror replaced from a claim 5+ years ago that they took a picture of my right fender and it had damage (paint chips) then. He said that he feels I misrepresented the damage. What followed was a long silence (I think him thinking he caught me in a lie?) and I reply by saying I understand I should have taken pictures but my car has been in storage for the past few years because of deployments and military orders and why would I lie about something like that? I said if the damage was there why was it not fixed when the mirror was damaged? Honestly if the mechanic didnt show me it I wouldnt have thought to look because at that point all I cared about was my vehicle being drivable again not about some cosmetic damage. A little background on me is that I have had multiple TBI's from deployments so my memory is legitimately pretty messed up and I have to almost be constantly reminded by my wife about what is going on for even the next day. I told the agent this and said that I paid out of pocket for the fender damage so I did not understand why he is calling me which caused him to seeming become enraged by asking me WHO TOLD YOU THAT WE WERENT COVERING THAT? So finally my main question is what steps should I take from here? I feel like a misunderstanding is being blown out of proportions by my agent and I can see from his point of view why he thinks that I was lying but it honestly makes no sense to make a claim on that for so little when all I cared about was it being drivable in the first place so I could have a working vehicle. Sorry for the rambling but like I said this is my first time dealing with something like this and I wanted to give you guys the full story so you can provide me with your opinions on this. I called him back shortly after this and all he could tell me is that I should hear something back in the next few business days. Thank you all for any advice you can offer. TLDR - I paid an additional repair out of pocket that my insurance refused to pay and now they are trying to say that I misrepresented my initial claim because there was earlier damage to the right fender. Full Coverage with lienholder's rights Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:58 PM PST I have full coverage car insurance and the financial company still owns my car. I do have GAP insurance. My boyfriend has made my payments for the last year since I have been at home with our newborn son, and 3 weeks ago my friend and I had a head-on collision in her car. It's made me think about my insurance! If something were to happen to my car and I wasn't working, would the car be repossessed by the financial company? Even with the GAP insurance? Or would I still get a check? Does anyone know?? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:26 PM PST I have UnitedHealthcare high deductible health insurance through my employer (nowhere close to meeting the deductible) and Medi-Cal (California medicaid). Weird situation but I disclosed to Medi-Cal that I have UHC and they are okay with it. Got my blood drawn this morning. I checked with the technician that both insurances were on file. While she is working she says, "oh yeah with United your cost out of pocket was going to be $33. I swapped them so Medi-Cal is first. So your cost is $0". I'm dumb and had a needle in me so i didn't process until later that I think she put medi-cal as the primary insurance. I think(?) they always told me it must be billed as secondary, aka employer health plan billed first. Is this allowed? Wouldn't her computer which was popping up with various prices have caught a mistake? I'm really afraid to get in trouble, or a huge bill, and obviously don't mean to do any harm. Thank you. Posted: 20 Nov 2021 02:01 PM PST I had an accident on 10/10. No witnesses, just me, the other driver and a passenger in their car. At the scene, our stories matched - he crossed the line in the roundabout and hit me. The police report says that and indicates him as "at fault" and me as "victim". No statement on the report from the passenger. (more detail in my post in r/legaladvice.) His insurance (Geico) initially said that the statements they received from each of us were in conflict, so they would not pay. I tracked down the police report for them and provided it, but they determined that because the officer did not actually see the accident, it didn't matter and they still won't pay. My insurance company (Allstate) made an attempt to talk to them, but didn't get a call back and gave up. I don't have collision on the car, so they aren't willing to help, even with advice. Q1 - I'd prefer not to take this to court, is there anything else I can do to move them? Q2 - If I do have to take it to court and I get a judgement, what will I then have to do to get them to pay? I'd like to think it'd be automatic, but I'd also like to think that the judgement of a police officer would carry some weight. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 20 Nov 2021 01:17 PM PST I just have to rant for a second. I'm training to become a telephone rep for a large insurance company. The group I'm in met our trainer over zoom, and we had a quick "here are the expectations" chat. Someone asked what the expectations for the dress is since our first trainer really didn't care as long as it was clean and in good repair. New trainer said- "You're in a grown up job now. You know how to dress like a grown up." ????? Like how is that helpful. All they wanted to know is if you expect business casual or not. Instead we get a condescending answer - like speaking to a group of 16 year olds. All jobs are "grown up" jobs. They dont hand out jobs to babies or children. Every job I had was a grown up job. In my last job, I wore scrubs everyday. Doesn't make that job any less grown up than this one. I know I'm being sensitive, but- If this is an indicator of how uppers speak to employees, I won't be at this company much longer. TL;DR- condescending behavior from superiors is not acceptable and I will quit if this continues. [link] [comments] |
Does Auto Liability Coverage Follow Me or the Car? Posted: 20 Nov 2021 12:13 PM PST I currently have an old car with liability insurance only. I plan on buying a new car and getting full coverage which of course includes liability. My question is if the auto liability part follows me and if it does, can I just get the full coverage with liability for the new car and still be covered for the old car without having to buy another policy for it? The reason I ask is that when you rent a car, your liability coverage can be applied to the rental car so I don't see why it couldn't be applied to my old car without me getting a separate policy for it too. Does this make sense? 👀 [link] [comments] |
