Posted: 21 Nov 2021 03:28 PM PST Hi there. I'm a well-educated 40yr old. I spent the past 16 years building a great career as a TV director. But after starting a family it has become obvious I can't travel 26 days a month. I now have 200k in a savings acct and I'm wondering how to best put that money to work. I'm great with people and I can learn any system quickly. I like the idea of starting a business. A restaurant would be easy, but not very profitable. Wondering if anyone may have insight on some resources where I can be inspired by some opportunities. I'm open to partnering up with someone who has a great idea, I'm open to starting my own thing, I'm open to working, I'm open to passive income. But after 16 years as tv director I'm a bit lost when it comes to the next step. Thanks for the read any thoughts you may have. What would you do with 200k?? [link] [comments] |
How can I monetize what I really enjoy doing and make a very good living out of it? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 04:26 AM PST I really love doing research on different topics, mostly business related. For example: I love reading random articles and books about something, then going down the rabbithole and proceed to do my own research on people, companies, incidents and connections mentioned in that article. And going on and on from there. I'm not creative enough to produce fancy video content out of it like you see on YouTube (and I don't enjoy the creative side of it at all), I'm relatively good at writing though. What could be a way to make a living out of that? How could I monetize it? [link] [comments] |
Is a Vending Machine Business worth it ?. I have questions. Posted: 21 Nov 2021 05:52 PM PST So I've been thinking of starting a vending machine business but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Low risk but also low reward type of business. Location is obviously going to be the main factor in the success. My questions are. How do I know/find a good location ?. If I do find a good location, how do I get permission to sell there ?. Who do I contact for permission ?. Do I need a contract? Do I need a lawyer to review/write the contract ?. Another question is where do you buy products for the cheapest ?. Obviously, you want to buy in bulk so I'm guessing Costco is a safe best ?. I know that I can find a $500-$2000 vending machine off of Facebook or craigslist. The above questions are the most important in the success/failure. [link] [comments] |
21 years old and have a product idea in mind, have no idea how to get started Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:55 PM PST It's really right there in the caption, but I have a product idea for dogs and cats. I have no idea where to get started other than creating a prototype, I'm not very artistic so I am trying my best with that. I thought about possibly paying someone to draw a design up for me, but I'm not sure if that could impact me in the future. Either way I have no idea what to do after my prototype is completed. I've been googling and seem to find a bunch of bs places just trying to scam. [link] [comments] |
Tips from an Entrepreneur to an Entrepreneur Posted: 21 Nov 2021 06:52 AM PST Hey guys! Former business owner here. Used to own a general contracting firm. Started the business and went nuts (my skill set is in sales and marketing). We grew super fast, did around 800K in sales in the first year and completed around 500K of those contracts. However, I totally lost control of the business. I woke up and all of a sudden I was managing like 20 people at a time, struggling to be organized enough to meet payroll, all the systems I implemented weren't implemented correctly or were implemented too quickly without enough employee training. I was way too involved with each of the customers and eventually I just got burnt out and shut down the business. BUT here are some things I wish I knew! - Understand accounting. Not just like "oh I know what a balance sheet is" but you need to understand how to actually put this stuff together and read it - Understand cash flow - have a solid plan to manage cash. I didn't realize that checks over 10K can get held up for two weeks. - Have a growth plan. I am absolutely ashamed to admit this, but I just had the mind set of sell as much as possible, which I did. However, it really didn't end well. I had no idea the amount of labor I actually needed to handle all of the incoming sales/customer service - Understand sales and marketing. This is my speciality, but it's very important. You have to know how to sell before you start a business - Understand management and recruiting - Understand your lane and don't deviate out of it. This was the biggest mistake on my part - trying to do things I was not even remotely passible at. - Have a solid customer service plan in place - More complicated does not mean better Hope this helps some of you out there who are just starting a business or who are running one! Posted: 21 Nov 2021 04:47 PM PST A number of resources I've encountered instruct the use of customer discovery to understand the pain points of potential future customers, ultimately building a profile of the archetypal customer before directing those learnings to the creation of an MVP. This seems like a case of putting the cart before the horse to me, especially if the product or service is somewhat abstract (as was the case with Dropbox, for example). If an MVP of the offering can be created in the most lean, inexpensive manner possible, is there any reason why an entrepreneur shouldn't begin with that? It seems like the simplest and most efficient way to kickstart the Build-Measure-Learn loop, after which customer discovery can take place and the entrepreneur can choose to pivot or persevere accordingly. Are InterNations events a waste of time? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 06:41 PM PST I am a CRE broker and my job keeps me insanely busy. My time is insanely precious to me and I'd hate to waste it. My gf brought up this event and she said it would be great to network. A few things: I hate meeting people who goes to this kind of events when they haven't made anything of themselves. Making friends to me is something I do through natural occurrences, not what I consider as artificial, which is going to these kind of events. That being said, I was wondering if anyone has been to any of them and if it was worth their time. I'd love to see any feedbacks. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

App-based book-keeping programs? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 03:51 PM PST Hi, I run a very small business. Wondering if there is an app-based book-keeping software that I can use to record expenses/revenue while on the go, or that would import/calculate this from my online store? [link] [comments] |
Restaurant Owners / Managers: How has hiring changed since COVID for you? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 01:54 PM PST Hi all! Just wanted to discuss these questions with those who either own or manage restaurants. Do you find you're spending more / less time conducting hiring related activities prior to COVID? What are those activities? [link] [comments] |
I need help with my startup- How do I proceed? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 09:19 PM PST It helps suicidal people by providing them therapy services in their times of need (when they are suicidal) and when they cannot afford it. So at the start of month, they are asked to pay some amount and they can avail as many therapies as they need till the end of month. At the end of month, they are to give back the therapists dues according to how many therapies they took. Now I am not a newbie, but I still feel stuck. This is going to be my third startup and second attempt at the same idea. The last time, it went well, and people were even willing to pay. But before I could officially start anything, I had health problems and couldn't continue. Now I am stuck on how to continue. Please help. Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Lost after getting started - Need advice on how to hire artists and models Posted: 21 Nov 2021 09:34 AM PST Hi all, We're trying to start a new business and we are running into issues. The business is for adult costume/lingerie. We got our first design done, had a few demos made, and even had a few friends model for us for some product photos. Having done all that showed us where the problem areas are. The main issue is hiring artists. I've tried everywhere from Fiverr, Upwork, even Deviant art, and I feel like I'm throwing away money. They either don't get what we're going for or waist their time producing something and then ask for more money. We've tried hourly and flat rate but still end up with the same problems. I've gone through at least six artists/graphic designers with different skill levels and none of them are quite right. Even tried one of those artists firms and that was a disaster. I think one of the problems is a lack of understanding what needs to be done and how much it should cost. I feel like I need to hire an artist interrupter just so they can hire an artist. The other issue is promotion. Hiring models is way more of a challenge than I thought it would be. I've looked at Model Mayhem, Sexyjobs, Craigslist, and I even looked into adult modeling agencies but that seem like overkill. Someone suggested Twitter but I feel like there's a Catch-22 here. I need people to know about us to be willing to work with us but I need people to work for us to know about us (and we're not just some sleaze with a camera.) I feel like we need a project manager but we're way to new/small for something like that but we're running into wall and none of us have a background in business. Does anyone have any advice on how we should proceed? [link] [comments] |
Psychological struggle - what can I do about it? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 10:23 AM PST Since I don't have anyone to talk to about the struggles I am here to ask you guys for advice. It's not that I don't have persons who care about me around me it's just that nobody understands me. A bit of background: I am 26 years old and finished my master's degree in Business Administration. Since I've been 18 years old I've been doing summer jobs and during the academic year, I dedicated myself to studying. After finishing my masterer's degree I did an internship at a well-known energy drink company. After finishing my internship I wanted to start my own business offering marketing services to different clients. Even though I managed to get a few of them it wasn't enough to pay all my bills. All my friends are getting jobs at companies. At this point also I started to look for a job but can't get one. It really started to affect my psychological health and don't know what to do… what is the right thing to do… how to tackle this… I feel hopeless and it really starting to affect my mental health a lot. If you know how an entrepreneur mindseted person should tackle all this struggle or if you have any advice on how to get through this let me know <3 Hope not a lot of people is struggling like this but if you are please know you are not the only one :) P.s. I am still pushing hard and if you are in need of any marketing service slide in DM and we will see if we are the right fit:) [link] [comments] |
I drafted a “software factory”: what software application domain should I focus on? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 04:21 PM PST Over the past 2 years I have drafted a "software factory". The "factory" allows a user to develop a software application without requiring knowledge of programming languages. The language I am developing is a "pseudo" natural language along with templates. As a first step, I have to focus on an application domain so I can make it usable, e.g. Contact Relation Management. How should I approach this problem? What application Domain should I focus on first? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Nov 2021 08:01 PM PST Hello, a year ago a friend and I released an indie video game into a fairly nieche market. We've been doing well with a bunch of sales, more than we expected, but still not earth shattering. We are contemplating advertising on a super popular YouTubers channel which fits exactly in our target audience. We did an ad with them last year and it made its money back for us. It helped us get some early traction. However when we are looking at how much they are charging, (their fee has gone up since last year) we would need to get about 10% of our current total sales in order just to cover the cost of the ad, that doesn't count for the sales tax we'll have to pay after these sales. I guess my question is, how much is considered too much for advertising? Do you consider advertising as a gamble? As you need to pay for the ad and then hope that enough people like your product. It feels like at the rate they are charging that they are another partner in our team. Which just feels odd. We are making reasonable sales at the moment, getting a but over 2 copies each day at the moment which we consider pretty good. Just trying to wonder if we should advertise or should we just keep going with word of mouth as that seems ok so far? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Nov 2021 07:55 PM PST I am looking for a passive way of making income while gaining some business experience. Is a laundromat a good first step into owning a business since there is not much active managing? It seems to survive recessions and cash flow around $40k where I am at. What are some pros and cons a beginner like me may not see right off the bat? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Nov 2021 03:47 PM PST We're just starting our farm business up, and have no clue about advertising or marketing. Been posting on Facebook regularly and we're building a following, but I'm definitely not doing enough. Any tips ? [link] [comments] |
I want to buy a business but don’t know how to save more money rather than my paychecks Posted: 21 Nov 2021 07:07 PM PST So I am currently 23 and work at FedEx as a driver and my contractor is looking to sell within the next 5 years. He is willing to sell to me as long as I can prove I can run the business and if I have the money for a down payment on a business loan. All in I would probably need $200-300k for that down payment and operating costs to start liquid. Other than saving out of my paychecks is there anything I can start on the side? This is very overwhelming as I didn't come from that kind of money and don't really make a lot to save so besides getting a second job I can't really think of much as I don't have all the time in the world since I work 6 day weeks already. Does anyone have any insight that could help? With that being said I think the math works out to alittle less than $1,200 per week for what I need to be saving but the problem is that $1,200 is like 1/3 of what I make a month. I already am going to move back home to speed up the process but other than that I am lost. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Nov 2021 06:48 PM PST Let me know what you think of this idea, a pivot of my last one. Over 100 billion pounds of food are wasted annually in the U.S. A lot of this involves food not actually expired. This is food which could be donated to hunger organizations or nonprofits. The idea is a bio sensor built into refrigerators which would detect levels of expiration of food inside. It is similar to the existing fridges which have cameras inside to display the contents. For example, it could give a reading into milk or yogurt and estimate expiration levels: good, not ideal, or expired. "Good" is food you would enjoy consuming. "Not ideal" is food you could still eat, but many would throw away to be safe. "Expired" food would be thrown away. This food would be displayed through the digital screen on the fridge or an app on the phone. Ideally, we would like to have them as percentages or color (i.e. green, yellow, red). "Not ideal" food would provide the option to donate to food organizations before reaching the "expired" level. "Expired" food would be thrown away and thus avoiding unnecessary waste. The basis of this idea comes from the feedback I received on here (thank you). It is predicated on not having to take any extra steps to detect expired food, but rather the device would do the work for you. Through partnership with Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, etc. this would provide additional demand for these types of fridges, or the device could be sold separately. This business model follows either B2B or B2C. Additionally, we would create partnerships with nonprofits and potentially government agencies. Problems solved: (1) Provide food health without extra work/steps. (2) Help alleviate world hunger and starvation. Note: I am aware similar devices and technology exist, but are predicated more on a visual approach. This is a biosensor which gives more precise metrics. Ideally, this could be used for fruit, dairy, and meats as well. The goal is to reduce food waste and promote safe and healthy eating. Edit: Any suggestions for better application would be appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 Nov 2021 02:42 PM PST I want to state that I do not consider myself an entrepreneur yet but I am attempting to save my money to start a business. I feel I have a really good idea for a business that I would enjoy. Should I hold onto it and focus on it (until I start my business) or should I focus on other things like learning what my market and community truly needs and or learning more skills to make myself more successful. Tool: 150+ websites to launch your Startup or Side Project Posted: 21 Nov 2021 12:12 AM PST Link: https://www.producthunt.com/posts/launch-list I JUST launched a product on Product Hunt 🚀 Over the past few years, I've built several products. But I always had a hard time with marketing and launches. In the last few weeks, I found several contents on where to launch a startup. But many of them were made several years ago, and many websites either no longer exist or are now requiring payment to launch your project. So I took the opportunity to invest this week (some 60+ hours with my cofounder) in creating this list with 150+ websites to launch your Startup. Disclaimer: I'm using this list myself. I hope this provides you some value and if you have any ideas on how to improve it don't hesitate to comment. [link] [comments] |
Ways to make money from home if you know how to do nails? Posted: 21 Nov 2021 05:33 PM PST Wife needs to start making money from home doing nails, but we can't have customers over which is our only stipulation. So I'm trying to see what others would recommend. I suggested doing nails on a mannequin and selling the photo/video of the art to other nail salons so those nail salons can use for social media, etc. I suggested designing and selling. I suggested her to do social media management in general for other nail salons but then she said she wants to make art, which I totally understand but just mentioning this tidbit to try and keep ideas along the side of letting her still be creative with nails still versus clerical or business things.
