Posted: 30 Sep 2021 09:08 AM PDT Hey everyone, This probably goes without saying but I thought I would share just because how quickly it happened. I posted an hour or so ago on this subreddit asking advice for loan planning and ideas. I pretty quickly got a DM from a redditor saying he wanted to help me and felt my struggle with paying off expensive schools. It was clear very quickly this was a scam. Sure enough Icy-Alfalfa4319 with only 90 days of reddit history was asking me to deposit a check for 8k and pay his friend for him with 2k of that money. I was just curious to see what kind of scam this was but the reason these people message is because they are successful sometimes. Just something to be aware of on this subreddit. I know some of y'all ACTUALLY struggle. Maybe you're in a tight or even desperate situation. That's when this kind of person goes from annoying to truly dangerous and evil. Please, if its too good to be true. It is. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:10 PM PDT So I bit the bullet and finally paid off our student loans. We have been spending less since the whole pandemic began and we have been blessed to keep our jobs. Sometime last year we realized if we were disciplined we could save enough money to pay off our loans. In August we had enough money but Biden extended forbearance for my birthday 😁. This week we decided why wait. Wednesday I paid 24k to my student loans, this evening we paid 36.4k towards my wife's. Haven't paid since last year so I don't know if it will feel different, but we are done! [link] [comments] |
Paying them off and celebrating the victory! Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:34 PM PDT I officially have enough saved up to pay off all my loans once interest starts accruing again in February. Started with about 50k for degrees completely unrelated to what I do now. I got lucky with a good job, and I've been throwing thousands of dollars a month at them just to be done with it. Now, I'm taking what I would spend on loans in a month and hosting a dinner for some close friends. Irresponsibly expensive Champagne, a suckling pig, a cake from my favorite bakery. I'll get back to being responsible with my money soon, but this month, I celebrate. I've never been an active poster here, but I am an avid reader. Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice that helped me get here. [link] [comments] |

ITT Student loan but already consolidated Posted: 30 Sep 2021 05:57 PM PDT With the new federal student loan forgiveness I'm confused how this works if you already did debt consolidation. So, to try and pay the debts down my friend originally did a debt consolidation loan. Is that now not forgiven because it's a private loan for the consolidation? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 07:22 PM PDT Why is Navient, and Fedloan getting out of the student loan business? Who will provide student loans in the future to students? Couldn't a lack of federal student loan providers raise interest? [link] [comments] |
Navient transferring my student loans. Worried. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:05 PM PDT I just now hear about the news that Navient is transferring federal student loans to another lender maybe Maximus? I have student loans with Navient. I am now under the National Emergency Forbearance and the Income Based Repayment Plan. I am worried about what would happen to my student loan. I have taking screenshots of my loans and I need to recertify in March 2022. Should I just wait and see what happens or should do something? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:56 PM PDT I don't understand why Biden's relief plan only includes undergraduate degrees from public colleges? I need help/relief, I'm drowning in student loan debt. I went to a private college because they had the best schedule for evening courses, at the time I had young kids at home. My loans are federal, I am on a IBR plan, because of interest I owe more than what I originally borrowed, I'm praying for relief, and now I'm devastated hearing that if there is relief I probably won't qualify. This is a burner account because I am embarrassed I am in this situation. Please help me understand, or let me know if there is a way around this IF relief is even given. [link] [comments] |
Great Lakes- Paid Ahead Status Tip? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:52 PM PDT Spoke with Great Lakes to ask if my paid ahead status pre covid forbearance will be reinstated at the end of the forbearance period. The person I talked to said that if I want my status reinstated that I need to opt out of the covid forbearance. She confirmed that if I call closer to January this can still be done. So assuming this information is correct… I should be able to call just before January 31 and opt out of the forbearance. Then I will have a few months of cushion reflecting on my account that I had worked to build a few years back in case of an emergency. Anyone else hearing the same thing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:02 PM PDT Hello all, Looking for some advice on consolidating (or not) my student loans. I have a lot of loans. My life has been a mess for a very long time. Traumatic abusive childhood, etc. Believe it or not, I went to school as a strategy to stay alive a few more years because I've been depressed and suicidal my entire life. I took out the max loans I could without doing private loans. For my undergrad. So, after working relentlessly on mental health healing for many years, I'm in my middle age trying to build some kind of life out of the wreckage of my past. Here's the breakdown:
I finally answered the collection agency's call yesterday. They want to assist me in consolidating all my loans through Studentaid.gov I took a look at the process today on Studentaid.gov and I'm not sure what my best option is. I am leaning toward consolidating and choosing Nelnet as the consolidator and IBR as the payment type. I am currently unemployed. I will likely be working low paying jobs for a while. My career goal makes it likely I will be pursuing a Master's degree at some point and could be going into public service but also maybe not. About 50/50 chance. Any advice? Please be kind and don't beat up on me for making bad choices in my past. Those bad choices did indeed keep me alive to get to today, where life looks more hopeful than it ever did before. More than I ever thought possible. How much is a life worth? Well in my case almost 100k haha. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Is there can excel calculator for determining paying off loans? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 07:17 AM PDT Hi, I currently have a total of 18 loans under NAVIENT, half are subsidized and half unsubsidized for a total of $48,465.42 With my new income, expenses, etc. Come February 2022 I will be able to pay out roughly $900.00-$1,500.00 a month in payments. I've been trying to read/find information on different strategies such as paying down the monthly interest rate increase + loan amounts or paying down the highest interest rate loans first (snowball strategy?). Ideally I want the quickest and most cost-effective way to pay down the loans. [link] [comments] |
Capitalization of interest after Covid relief concludes? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 10:45 AM PDT I have been aggressively paying a few of my higher interest loans during covid forbearance but have left others untouched. Some of the latter have unpaid interest from March 2020. Does anyone know if the unpaid interest will capitalize after the covid forbearance ends at the end of Jan 2022? I could pay it now/before Feb, but it amounts to a few thousand dollars, and I'd prefer to keep paying down the higher interest loans first. [link] [comments] |
Using PLUS loan after graduation Posted: 30 Sep 2021 01:31 PM PDT Hey there, Is it cool to use my PLUS loan after graduation? I'm set to be done with classes in December and I had intended for my PLUS loan to go through during the Summer, but it didn't. Instead, it was disbursed this month. It was supposed to cover rent from June-December, but I've only now gotten it in September. Can I use it after I graduate for a few months? Does anyone care? Is that a violation of the loan agreement? I'm not gambling with it or investing or buying drugs or anything. It's just for rent, but in an unintentionally retroactive way. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:38 AM PDT So I'm going to college in Winter of 2021/2022. When I apply for fasfa it's asking for taxes from 2019. Why? In 2019 I was still in high school and my parent won't give me any information about their finances to fill out the FASFA form. Shouldn't they be asking for taxes from 2020 since I'll be in school for 2021/2022? [link] [comments] |

Can I get a student loan to pay off collection agency? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 09:21 AM PDT Most of my grad program was paid for by my company's tuition assistance program. Under the program, I would be obligated to reimburse my company any tuition assistance dispersed if I left the company within 3 years, which I did. My (previous) company is using a debt collection agency (Transworld Systems Inc) to collect the debt. So can I apply for a student loan to pay off this debt and which kind? I have never had a student loan before (used 9/11 GI bill and grants for undergrad). General advice on best ways to pay off the loan is welcome also. FYI, I can afford to pay it off outright but it is still a huge chunk of cash [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:24 AM PDT Do my Segal Education Awards not count toward PSLF payments if I used them before my in-school grace period is over? And can 2 education awards count toward 24 qualifying payments or just 12? Teach For Erica alums, did you face any PSLF trouble related to the dates TFA put on your AmeriCorps service verification letters? I did Teach For America for 2 years, during which I got my master's degree and was able to defer all my public and private loans. I applied the 2 Segal Education Awards i got from AmeriCorps to my public loans days before the 6-month grace period ended so the accrued interest wouldn't capitalize. Over the years, I've been told my payments don't count toward my 120 qualifying payments for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. One reason they claim is that because my loans were not technically "in repayment" status because I was still in my in-school grace period. The other reason they give is that the dates of my AmeriCorps service are shorter than 12 months, but I was a teacher! I made a two-year commitment to TFA, fulfilled every single day of it, and even had duties over the summers. But the dates TFA wrote "released" me each year after about 11 months before the new school year started. Because the dates weren't exactly 12 months, FedLoan claims I'm ineligible to use payments toward PSLF, and that no matter what I can only do that with one payment, not both. [link] [comments] |
Best student loan option for working student Posted: 30 Sep 2021 07:46 AM PDT Hello everyone, My job suspended its education reimbursement program so I will have to pay the rest of my degree out myself. Its 4 classes so $23k. I make about 78k a year and have about 200k in assets saved (accounts, real estate etc.). I also recently got married and my spouse does not have a salary. I don't want to liquidate anything to pay the remainder of these classes. I was wondering if anyone knows of places I can look for reasonable rates on student loans for people without hardship. I know I will not get approved for any FASFA loans. I was hoping to find something in the 3-4% range that doesn't accrue interest until I graduate but idk if that exists. [link] [comments] |
