Looking for recommendations on Laptop Insurance that includes theft/vandalism coverage.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:03 PM PDT

I am having a hard time finding an insurance provider for laptops that includes coverage in the case of theft/vandalism and was hoping to get some recommendations from this group. I was very close to pulling the trigger on a plan through Worth Ave Group but the reviews on how they handled claims concerned me. I can't seem to find any other company that offers individual policies (vs. businesses/schools) with the optional for theft coverage.

    Other companies I checked:

    • Securranty
    • Asurion
    • Squaretrade
    • Allstate

Any and all guidance would be very much appreciated!

Rear ended by driver with “the general” insurance...

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:58 PM PDT

Got rear ended by a genius texting on his phone and he has the general as an insurance company. Just wondering if anyone has had any interactions with this company and what body shops they work with for my car repair as I filed the claim through his insurance as he's at fault (police report also filed and he's at fault)... Also any suggestions as this is my first time being involved in an accident (filing with their insurance vs mine)... Thanks...

    GEICO quote question

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 08:07 PM PDT

I'm applying for a quote for a new car that I have not driven yet. When it asks for previous incidents should I include those that were in a car besides the one I'm applying for at the moment? Auto-assumptions says those costs exceed $500 or more each incident but I've never had an accident in THAT car. I am in Florida, USA.

    Teen Claim/Wreck Question

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 07:54 PM PDT

Our son was in a wreck last week, totaled the car off, was his fault. We have him listed as an additional driver on the vehicle in question. In total we have 3 vehicles on our policy… will the premiums go up on all the vehicles? Or just the one he was listed as the additional driver on? We were in the process of looking for another vehicle for myself before the wreck, and not sure if the vehicle for me would see increased premiums, or just ones he is listed as an additional driver.

State Farm if it makes a difference.

    Collection of cars?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:51 PM PDT

I'm wondering how insurance works if you want to start a collection... say 10+ cars? Do you need coverage on each car or are there speciality companies when dealing with someone who has a large collection? This would be for modern vehicles and not collector type cars.

    Whole Lie Policy

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:00 AM PDT

About 38 years ago, when I was 22, my father started a whole life policy on me. The policy has a face amount of $25,000. At some point, I took over the premiums, and I've paid them religiously ever since. The policy also had a Waiver of Premiums for 38 years, ans as a result of that passing, my premium is reduced slighty, starting next month. I have no idea what a "Waiver of Premium" is. My parents are the Beneficiaries of the policy. My mother is deceased, and my father doesn't need the $25K. I think I was supposed to update the beneficiaries at some point in time, and maybe I did, but I have no record of this. It doesn't help that the policy has been transfered to various insurance companies over the years. From adding up the premiums, I have to say Insurance certainly is a racket.

Since then, I've gotten married, and have a familiy. Through my current employer, I have additional coverage of 5x my annual salary. I've had this kind of coverage as an option at most, if not all, of my jobs, but I'm not intending upon changing jobs for the rest of my career, which probably has ~10 years left. There is plenty of equity, pensions, IRAs, Social Security, etc to pay the bills should I die. To be honest, I'm more worried about becoming incapacitated in some way.

I'm thinking that I should cancel this $25K policy, as if I die, it's not really going to provide much of anything. If I cancel, and I don't know the proper terminology, aren't I entitled to some cash value? I have the policy on front of me, and these things are not written for normal people to fully comprehend. The last page of the policy has a "Table of Cash, Loan, and Non-forfeiture Values", and this table has two columns. One column states Cash Value, and the other is entitled Paid Up Life Insurance. For each colum, there is a line for my current age (60). Cash Value is $9,625, and Paid-up Life Insurance is $20,800. Obviously, I've paid in a lot more than both of these numbers.

This second column confuses me, as there is another table that the guranteed death benefit is always $25,000. What is this column for, and which amount am I entitled if I cancel?

Additionally, this table seems to list up to age 65, and it's not clear to me what becomes of the policy once I turn 65? Incidentally, the values for the two columns at age 65 are $11,700, and $21,875. I'm in US, Massachusetts. Policy originated in Florida.

Will Long Term Insurance actually pay off?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:31 PM PDT

I'm wanting to sign up for Long Term Disability Insurance offered through my employer. The only option for me is $24 per month premium. The benefit has a 6 month waiting period and pays $4100 per month up to 1 yr. They said if I am no longer employed at the company, my policy ends. But wait a minute! If I become sick or disabled, I'm reasonably sure that my employer will fire me. Yes, the American With Disabilities Act says that can't happen unless it constitutes a 'hardship' which I'm sure they will argue. So, is there any way I can force my company to keep my long term disability policy from being cancelled under these circumstances? [btw, I live and work in Indiana]

    Homeowners Insurance Help

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 09:59 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of becoming a new homeowner and need some help on the policy. I'm being quoted about 1400 for 12 months for these coverages. I'm in the Southeast US.

    Dwelling Protection- $330,000.
Family Liability Protection -$300,000 each occurrence. Guest Medical Protection- $1,000 each person.

Building Structure Reimbursement Extended Limits- Included

    Personal Property- $231,000

    Other Structures Protection -$49,500

Additional Living Expense including Fair Rental Income - $66,000

    Wind and Hail - Selected

    Scheduled Personal Property - Jewelry - $9,450

    Water Backup- $10,000

Building Codes Coverage - Not selected/Not applicable

Loss Assessments - Not selected/Not applicable

Extended Coverage on Jewelry, Watches and Furs -Not selected/Not applicable

Identity Theft Expenses - Not selected/Not applicable

All Peril Deductible - $1,000.00 Tropical Cyclone Deductible- $6,600.00 Wind and Hail Deductible- $1,000.00 Water Backup Deductible- $1,000.00

A couple of things to note:

    1) I need to up the dwelling coverage to match the appraisal of the house.

    2) Why is personal property coverage so high? I don't have that much personal property? But I've read it should be about half or more of your dwelling coverage?

    3) The Other Structures Protection - we don't have any other structures on the property. It's a house with attached garage, backyard, and a fence around. There is a basketball hoop drilled into the ground in the driveway though.

    4) There is no basement.

    5) I do have umbrella insurance on another policy.

Can someone please tell me if this policy is good? Should I be looking to add/up anything? Can someone explain the different line items in ELI5 terms?

Minor bumper accident - changing lanes - did not stay on scene / Help Advice

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:57 PM PDT

    In Ontario, Toronto, Canada.

I had a bumper crash/gash, both car changing lanes at the same time, his car forward turning right, mine behind in his blind spot, turning left, my front left hit, his rear right.

I have not had an accident in all my life driving for 17 years, I freaked out and drove away, as it was not a busy intersection late night. And I don't know what happened I just went into a shock.

I went in shock my ears started ringing and I just drove off thinking about my perfect insurance record. Anyway, he noted my license plate and i got call from my insurance saying a third party claim was initiated. It was likely a 50/50 fault but my going away obviously makes me guilty. It was honestly just a shock and awe type situation where I didn't think and completely freaked out thinking about my perfect record.

Now its been a couple of days and while still struggling with the bit of trauma, and having seen other accidents on the road, I am starting to come to terms with it.

what are my options in terms of responding to the insurance claim? Do I get lawyer? Do I get in touch with the uber driver somehow to resolve? or go through insurance which would suck because it would be on record for 10 years which seems so unfair, after about 17 years of perfect record (and I drive a lot). :(

    Health Insurance novice

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 04:42 PM PDT

My father decided to kick me off his health plan last month with no warning, so I am currently un-insured. I don't have a home base as I am a seasonal fisheries technician, and I work throughout the US. I checked the Health Insurance Marketplace, and the only plans I qualify for only have in-network doctors in Louisiana.

I don't have any health issues, but I am super paranoid that I'll get in some sort of accident and end up in debt for the rest of my life. I'd love some advice on some resources for health plans that have a wider network.

Car insurance: does the report from the settlement have an effect on later insurance rates?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:18 AM PDT

Here's the TLDR version of my question. Thanks in advance for any advice you could give me:

My car got destroyed in Hurricane Ida, so it was a total loss. (I'm in the US, in the state of New York.) The insurance company assessed the car and said that some of the damage was from before the hurricane. They claimed that, because of that prior damage, they owed me $5,000 less than the full value of the car.

The claim that I had prior damage is BS; there's physically no way I could have gotten the damage the insurance company says I did. (See below for details.)

After a month of going back and forth with the insurance company, they're now offering me the full value of the car. However, the report that comes with the settlement still lists this so-called "prior damage".

Should I accept the settlement? Or should I push to have the listing of "prior damage" removed from the report? Would the company's saying that there was prior damage raise my rates, even though the company is now willing to give me the full value of the car?

    *********

Here's more info on the so-called "prior damage."

My car had been parked in my apartment building's underground garage. The back of the car was about 2.5 feet from the solid, floor-to-ceiling, concrete wall of the garage. The last time I'd driven the car was in December, about 9 months before the hurricane. When I parked the car, it was in good, driveable condition.

When I called the insurance company to report the loss, they sent a tow truck to get the car. Stupidly, I didn't take my own pictures before the tow company picked up the car. The tow company didn't take photos before they towed the car either, even though they're supposed to.

The insurance company sent me photos of the car after it had been towed to a lot for assessment. Those photos showed the back bashed in, as if I'd been hit from behind on the highway. (The damage to the car looked as if it had been hit by another car, not like it had hit a solid wall. It's not like the damage looked as if I'd hit the wall of the garage and then just left the car in its space.)

There's simply no way someone could have hit it from behind between when I parked it 9 months ago and when the hurricane happened. Something very heavy going very fast would have had to teleport through the garage wall to hit me from behind.

It's very possible, though, that the car could have been damaged in transit. I strongly suspect that the car wasn't properly attached to the tow truck and hit something, or the tow truck had trouble getting out of the garage and whacked my car against a corner or wide concrete support pillar in the garage on the way out.

I gave the insurance company permission to check the EDR. (That's the car's black box. It records the history of the car, including dates and distance driven and a history of any impacts to the car.) I'm not sure whether they'd checked it or not. I know they hadn't when they gave me their first, very lowball offer.

Car totaled on 8/24… still waiting on insurance to do… anything!!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 03:56 PM PDT

The other drivers insurance immediately accepted fault (I was t-boned after their unlicensed driver blew through a stop sign…) and I filed my claim through them so I could get a rental car (I had no rental coverage on my own policy), but my insurance had already moved my car from the tow yard to their storage lot, and I have been completely unable to get my insurance (who absolutely does know I am filing through the other insurance!) to work with the other drivers insurance to actually release my car to them so they can make any progress on my claim…

I've made so many phone calls that have gone nowhere, and now I'm nearing 6 weeks after the accident with no resolution in sight.

What should my next step be? I've already spoken with supervisors at both insurance companies (multiple times), which has accomplished basically nothing - both insurance companies blame the other for the holdups. Neither claims adjuster (my insurance or the other drivers insurance) is responsive, they do not answer or return phone calls, and it often takes a week or more to get any information out of them (and that also requires escalating the issue just to get a call back), so trying to get them both on the phone at the same time is literally impossible.

Not sure if I want to lawyer up yet (knowing I'll lose a fair chunk of any settlement money - I'd rather wait to hire a lawyer to get a better settlement for my broken arm after my car has been paid out) but from my perspective neither one of them is doing their job…. and I don't think it shouldn't be up to me to do all of the leg work to get them to communicate.

Hit and Run- we found the driver but we’re worried

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 11:41 AM PDT

Two nights ago I was hit by a driver running a red light. They sped away immediately. Luckily no one was hurt. My car has some damage but is still drivable. The other car however left behind their entire bumper WITH THE LICENSE PLATE. We called the cops and they went to the guy's house before coming to me and my boyfriend at the scene. The officer told us the man who hit me "just really wanted to get his wife home." While we were waiting for the cops to come a man drove by and told us he was looking for the other driver. He didn't see the accident, but he heard a collision, looked over and saw the other car speeding away, and came to talk to us . I didn't get his information that night but I went back two days later to the houses near by and found his car, went to the house it was parked near and found him. He gave me his info. So a police report was filed, and I filed an insurance claim and spoke to his insurance company. This was all filed before I found the witness. So I figured that it was obvious he was at fault because he fled the scene, and also that is a crime!! Anyways today I received a call from his insurance. They told me he has a different version of the events that night and they don't find him to be at fault as of right now. I told them I found the witness that was there and he said that might not be credible. I'm really frustrated I don't want him to get away with this. Even if the insurance doesn't say he is at fault I want him to at least have repercussions for the hit and run! What do I do? I just want justice! I plan to go to the station on Monday to get the police report to give to my insurance agent. I'm in California by the way, and there are no cameras on this intersection.

    HDHP HSA vs PPO

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I'm comparing a new employers insurance plans and am unsure of which plan to choose. The employer covers all of the premiums so it's just a difference in delectables and payment structure.

HDHP deductible is $1500 out of pocket max is $4000. Coinsurance is 20%. Employer contributes $1125 to the HSA. PPO is $250 deductible out of pocket max is $4000. $20 copays.

I'm about to start IVF so I do expect a lot of office visits for the next year.

    Which one should I choose?

    Edit: in Texas

Full coverage insurance and lot charges

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 12:51 PM PDT

I'm trying to get some idea of what to expect here. My car has full coverage and I had an accident. My insurance company is USAA. Now, USAA does have Roadside Assistance. The problem is that I could not reach a rep after 30 minutes of waiting, and the responding officer recommended that I let him call a tow truck, which towed it to an impound lot, saying insurance is likely to cover the lot charges.

Now, I recognize he could have been full of it and just trying to finish up the situation, not caring about any bill I might receive afterward. I reported the accident to my insurance company. Will the insurance company cover the lot charges?

    EDIT: I'm in California.
