I need advice on a tough employee situation

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:26 PM PDT

About a year ago we hired a receptionist who has turned out to be a great asset and team player. She has been in an abusive relationship this whole time which turned into several days called out sick because of black eyes, cut lips, and even broken bones.

We all have tried to befriend her and give advice and help. She keeps going back to the guy. I know this is normal for abusive relationships.

This past week he literally pushed her out of a car. She had a severe concussion that resulted in an ER visit.

My team has become resentful of her. When she needs to call out "sick" it really puts us in a pickle that makes everything turn into a giant shit show for the day.

I feel horrible for her because she does a great job when she is here. She is 100% a team player. Remove the abuse and she is an ideal employee.

I don't want to fire her, but my team wants her gone. Any advice or expertise would be very appreciated.

Entrepreneurship & Small Business Is Good For You

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:38 AM PDT

Hi there, first time posting, admin, please delete if not suitable.

I am an entrepreneur (since 2008) and hustled from nothing and built up a therapy business in Singapore which got acquired eventually. Took a sabbatical from Dec 2017 to June 2019 and now helping with wife's therapy business (bought into equity when I joined).

Looking to grow an online business too but have struggled with it since 2018. I recently started a YouTube channel (been very resistant to videos) to share about entrepreneurship, money, personal growth (still exploring) so thought to share here.

Let me know what you think, what I can add into the videos, what I can share more about, what can I help with, thank you.

Name for an emotional support service

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:00 AM PDT

Looking for names for a service we want to start in the mental health space. The name should be friendly and approachable and we don't want to use the word 'mind' or 'brain'.

The service itself is for people to talk to someone more casually than they would a therapist, like you would call a friend.

Something that's fun, not too serious and depressing yet welcoming and simple.

    Empty retail space ideas

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:29 AM PDT

I have an empty retail unit that I can use for business in a residential area.

    Pros:

    • 1,400 SF total
    • I own the building, so no monthly rent

    Cons:

    • Parking is very limited - 1 space for the unit, so customers or clients must park on the street or anywhere they can find parking in the neighborhood.
    • Immediate area income demographics are around ($39,000 - $43,000 annually)

    Some ideas I have:

    • Open and operate a smoke shop (There are 2 very close by within 2 miles)
    • Lease the space out to someone else to open a retail store.

    Question:

    • What is a good use for a unit like this? All ideas welcome.

Received an email from a "legal officer" of a large company. Seems fake, but don't want to risk it.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 12:18 PM PDT

My business received a message through our websites contact form claiming that we were violating some laws by using photos belonging to another company, and I have a strong suspicion that it's fake, but don't want to ignore it in case it's not.

A few things: -While the email address provided is legit, it was entered thru the contact form (so anyone can enter any email address). We can't be sure that it came directly from the owner of that email. -All images on our website are our own with the exception of 2. These are publicly licensed for commercial use, so I think it's unlikely that these would cause us any trouble. -The email does not point out which images are in question but provides a link to a download which only contains a JavaScript file (by far the sketchiest part of the whole thing). - the language of the message is boilerplate legal jargon but very spammy in a few instances (eg, "download it right now and check this out for yourself")

    Is this a scam?

Edit: thanks to everyone who commented and confirmed that I likely have nothing to worry about here!

    New business name ideas

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:58 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am in the process of working to get our new business off the ground and I'm hoping to find some good ideas as for what to name it. Sadly I am admittedly just not very creative, and I am hoping for something that can be funny, include puns, something serious sounding but also unique would also be great. So, the type of work we do specifically is home theater installation. We can mount TVs and soundbars, set up home theater systems, do wire concealment, remove and dispose of previous television/audio equipment, and so on. So I'm hoping I can find something catchy and memorable. Thanks ahead of time to anyone who is willing to give me any suggestions!

How to get clients for coaching-type business?

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 12:43 AM PDT

Getting this out of the way now: I'm terrible at marketing. Also, this is a sole-proprietorship business.

I'm thinking of starting (really re-starting, as I did this twice before) a business of mine focused around helping folks live healthier lifestyles. I'm aware of the legal circumstances in my region, and I know the things I have to do to jump through those loops. I know my stuff very well (having spent nearly a decade gathering information, researching, getting education, etc.), so that isn't a problem.

I just have absolutely no idea how to actually get clients!

I've tried business cards at health-food stores, coffee shops/juice & smoothie bars; I've done the online thing with a website; I've even done little gimmicks here and there with trivia questions to try to pique interest, all without success.

I've thought of partnering up with local physicians, but nothing certain there yet.

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Single member llc- do I need to write a check to myself or can I just pay my personal Cc?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:25 PM PDT

I charge all my personal expenses to a (personal) CC and pay it off each month. Is it ok to make these personal CC payments directly from my LLC account as an owners draw vs writing myself a personal check and paying from my personal account?

I keep meticulous records of my business expenses and don't have a ton, and of course pay my taxes. I'm not doing anything shady— the extra step of writing myself a check just seems kind of redundant and I'm new to this.

Need marketing suggestions for my wig store

    Posted: 30 Sep 2021 12:19 AM PDT

I recently started selling handcrafted wigs. However, my business isn't getting enough sales. I know it's too early and I must have patience. The thing is that my business is dying slowly and I can't watch it crumble to the ground.

Anyways, I was thinking of investing in marketing. But I am not sure what option I should choose between traditional and online marketing. Thought it would be good to ask for help from Reddit overloads. Can you guys give me suggestions?

How Can I Retain Clients After Producing Results

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 04:41 PM PDT

This may sound like a confusing question to many people as you would think that after producing great results for a client they would obviously stay, but let's take my business for instance. I work with small businesses producing quality SEO strategies in order for them to rank on the first page of Google so that they can be seen by more potential customers. Now I have a client of mine who ranks on the first page of google in their respective industry, but what stops them from just saying "Thank you for the ranking Justin, but now that I'm number 1 I can't justify paying you X amount of dollars". My current approach has been to explain to all my clients how important maintenance is to the long term success of any SEO strategy, but sometimes I feel as though this method doesn't stick or people just aren't listening as they are focus on the dollar sign aspect.

What is the least disruptive way to change payroll companies?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:53 PM PDT

My husband and I currently utilize a payroll company for our business however this company has repeatedly made errors, file tax forms to the IRS without even consulting us first, and has other additional issues. We finally started receiving letters from the IRS that our assets would receive liens but it was all due to errors that the payroll company had made when they submitted forms erroneously that we never authorized. Luckily we are pristine record keepers and have been able to get things straightened out but now I'm convincing him that we need to switch payroll companies now. He is convinced that this is incredibly difficult and will cause a systemic disruption and just keeps putting it off because he says it's going to take so long to do. Is it really that hard to change between one payroll company to another?

This will help if anyone can answer this.

    Food business geared towards students

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:54 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I cook and I'm just starting to sell food. I don't have a restaurant. I have a kitchen to prepare the food but it is available for delivery only. Think of it as a ghost kitchen situation. Through a bit of research, I'm finding that college students are pretty broke. No offense, I too have been a broke college student. So they don't seem to be quite the target for meal prep as I initially thought. Now I'm thinking it would be a good idea to contact corporate offices in my area so I can get in there for catered lunches. I've called around a bit and it seems like a lot of places are either closed still, due to the current state of the world, not operating at full capacity (if they are open) or the number listed online is the customer service line which doesn't put me in contact with an actual person at the location I'm looking to serve.

I'm getting a bit frustrated but I know owning a business won't be easy. My question to you guys: Where should I go from here? Should I continue contacting cooperate offices in my area and hope one answers? Should I go visit them in person so they see a physical face? Should I go back to the college students and forget the meal prep but cater college events? Should I find families in my area and within a few miles of my area that don't cook and market myself to them? Dispensaries are becoming more popular where I live, should I contact any of them about allowing me a small space in their store to sell something small and cheap so people can get a chance to see me, try a little something , and leave them wanting for more? I'm really for anything right now exposure is really important at this stage

Folks who currently have or have owned a yoga studio - any advice for someone looking to open one?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:51 PM PDT

I'm a yoga teacher and have been spending some time building a website / online membership / boosting my online presence, on top of teaching in studios. My dad has offered to help me get a brick and mortar studio - he would only be helping with money / rent, so everything else would be handled by this delicate petunia. I'm giving myself some time to mentally prepare for this, along with building a clientele. I'm trying to over prepare and see what I need to start doing now, or at least considering.

    Renting Vehicles vs Buying

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:39 PM PDT

Lol 4 company vehicles have broken down. Tranny on one, crankshaft on another, who knows on the van tech is taking their sweet time on that one, another's engine went.

I usually purchase used vehicles for my employees. Ironically the oldest vehicles and cheapest are the ones that run best! A bunch of subarus I bought overpriced all went bust now. So I'm scrambling to buy Ford transits but the pricing everywhere is ridiculous.

I got manhandled when I bought a few subarus and even in desperation I refused to cave in on a new transit today as well as an older one. I'm not getting bent over the rail again.

I have never considered renting fleets. Anyone experience with this? I've been talking to actual dealerships now for certified vehicles but my only issue is no employee will ever take care of a new vehicle. They just don't care. So buying anything over 20k is just asking for trouble. Whether it's scraping it against god knows what or just not maintaining it, a new vehicle is not feasible and the used ones are unpredictable.

I have only now started looking into renting.

I want to take over my family’s business.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:34 PM PDT

I have worked for my family's tree care business for 2.5 years full time and have worked for about 8 years part time. I know the details of how the job gets done on a day to day basis, I can climb trees and have given quotes to clients and have made some sales. My next step is to become a certified arborist which requires 3 years of full-time experience in my state. My parents are in their late 50's, I'm 24. We have 10 employees and they all earn a salary. We have really good employees and solid equipment.

My question boils down to, how do I grow this business? Which subjects, aside from trees, do I need to have a firm grasp on to become the next ceo of this company? I don't know where to begin to make the correct financial decisions. Do I need to go to school and get a degree to gain the knowledge I need? I received my associate's degree from a local community college but went to work full-time after completing that.
