What is a business that I can start for under $10,000?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:44 PM PDT

I was hoping to get some business ideas that aren't extremely expensive to start. I have a few friends who do lawn care and who paint. Both were under $10,000. Is there anything else out there that someone can do besides those jobs?

I am tired of applying for jobs and just want to do something on my own. I have done research in buying social media accounts and growing/ selling them but would like something more stable.

I am close to Cincinnati OH if that helps!

    Thank you in advance!

How do I find complementary businesses, that have similar clients as me, for a business partnership?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:14 PM PDT

Just wondering how to find businesses like that that also don't have the same service as me? I've made a few connections with people that help businesses and don't currently offer but want to offer web design and development to their clients.

So how should I go about finding more businesses like that? Thanks for any input!

    Where do I start!?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:14 PM PDT

I currently run an Etsy shop and am pretty versed in e-commerce, but I'm looking into starting a shopfront, a small retail business selling more items than my own that I currently sell. I've started jotting down a plan; what I want to sell, how I'll get these products, how much it may cost to start up, etc. But I have no idea where to go from there. What can I do to get the ball rolling on this idea and to get some more information?

Any resources or help is appreciated. Thank you!!

How to set up a new LLC in a state where I am not yet a resident?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 11:52 PM PDT

I have an opportunity for a 6-month consulting contract in my field of expertise. I am currently unemployed but have always been a W-2 employee in the past, so this would be my first time working as a 1099 contractor. The work is 100% remote.

I am currently a legal resident of NC, but for the past year have been living in OH. However, I am planning on moving to TN sometime next year and staying there for the foreseeable future. Therefore, I'd like to set my LLC up in TN, to avoid the hassle of trying to migrate it later on, and to take advantage of the current tax benefits (NC and OH have state income taxes, TN doesn't).

Unfortunately I have no current foothold in TN whatsoever, and no way to establish residency there before the contract will start. So what do I do? Here is my plan so far:

    1) Use a service like LegalZoom to form the LLC and provide registered agent services. This will allow me to set the LLC up as a TN business.

    2) Purchase a TN PO Box so that I will have a TN address to use for the business, and to list for filing taxes with the IRS.

In terms of time, it would be best if I could get this done within the next couple of weeks.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

What small business can operate mainly in night time?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:32 AM PDT

I'm looking for ideas of small businesses (not just self employment!) which can operate mostly or exculsively in nigh time. Googling gave nothing really, only stuff like website making or babysitting as a side job.

    Farming/plant-growing business?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:48 PM PDT

Hey guys. Just wanted to ask what are the possibilities of creating indoor plant/flowers/fruits/vegetables etc business starting from a low scale really (renting a space or using some of the space in house). I'm just looking for a calm work that i can start by myself and easily expand it in the future

Few possibilities that comes to mind

    1. Vertical farming/water farming - any kind of salad stuff or vegetables that grow fast like tomatoes that will grow quick using water flowing and a lot of LEDs
    2. Microgreens (so that's point one, focused on just microgreens for a local market like restaurants and small shops)
    3. Growing CBD/CBG cannabis in the growboxes (THC is banned in my country or the countries I'm thinking about of moving to)
    4. Growing seedlings of seasonal stuff (trees, bushes, decorative flowers, vegetables etc etc)
    5. Bonsais, but that's a niche that takes a lot of time and Patience
    6. Starting an Chicken based business (egg focused)
    7. Growing mushrooms

Please, if there is something else that I could start growing relatively easy by myself with possibility of scaling it up in the future I'm just tired of having a boss. I want to create myself some nice relaxing business that could be scaled so in the future i could automatize as many parts of it as possible, or just hire people to do it for me while I have nice and steady cash flow

    Purchase a small business

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:05 AM PDT

I am looking into purchasing a smaller business with a 10% down sba loan.

I've already started a business and want to put my eggs into more than one basket.

There are two ways I'm looking at funding this, 1. Put my own $$ up for the down payment. 2. Raise the down payment from a couple investors and pay them back over 1-3 years.

Has anyone ever done something like this and what did it look like? What advice do you have?

Can I count my families allowances as income on a loan application,?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 01:24 AM PDT

Can I count my families allowances as income on a loan application,? My grandma gives me 1000$ a month to pay for living expenses. On my application I am self employed. (I really am self-employed however my business is not something I can put on paper). I'm wondering if I can claim the 1000$ cash a month as income on my loan application. Especially considering it's given to me by hand in an envelope. There's no paper trail of my income at all if you could consider my grandma's allowance... Please help if you can thank you

Online Publishing Business - LLC Recommended?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:01 PM PDT

I have a passion for writing and I am interested in creating a publishing company. I am deciding if I should trademark the business and create an LLC, or just do one or the other. I plan for the business to be mostly or exclusively done online. I am also planning on moving to a different state soon, and I know that LLCs are state-specific.

I plan to have my own website for the company. Is an LLC worth it in this case or would trademarking suffice? I've seen varied opinions across Reddit on this. Some swear LLCs help with liability and taxes even for one-person businesses, and others swear they are useless if the business has only one person.

If I do decide to trademark and form an LLC, which should I do first? Would it be better to form the LLC in the state I am in now or in the state I think I will move to? Both states have low costs for LLCs.

I appreciate any advice here. Thanks in advance.

edit: I forgot to ask, is it better to file the trademark under my name or under the name of the LLC (if I have one)?

Growing my agency - better to go niche?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:37 PM PDT

I posted a short time ago about how the growth of my digital agency seems to be stagnating and whether I should just go ahead and do something else. Looking to start attracting bigger clients and avoid being stuck and only attracting work for the lower end of the market.

We currently offer the following services: Ecommerce, Web Development, Marketing, Design, Branding, Software Development, Cloud Management, IT Support and Hosting

We have clients and are profitable in all of the above areas but is our service range too broad? Do we need to go niche and just specialise in one of the above to seem more specialist rather than a "jack of all trades", therefore allowing us to raise prices?

My head says ecommerce as that's mainly where our skill and expertise lies and what I enjoy the most. But then am I turning away business as we phase out clients who are looking for the other services we offer? For example, we take a client who wants an ecommerce site and branding. Or a client who just wants a standard non Ecommerce site.

    Suggestions appreciated

First Business LLC Setup - CA

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:03 PM PDT

I have been a consultant for years, but I am getting my first client through my LLC next year.

I will have 1 client and bill between $340k-$380k next year. So far I have created my LLC in CA, and I am looking for what I should do next.

    Some things I've found:

    • Get an EIN number
    • Open a bank account
    • Get a payroll provider
    • Get a CPA
    • Get a Financial Advisor
    • Get a lawyer to review my new contract
    • Consider treating my LLC as an S Corp to lower taxes

Is there anything I'm missing? Does anyone have any services they recommend to work with? So far I created my LLC with Incfile, but haven't done anything else. My contract will be ready to review in a few weeks.

    15% APR on a $47k loan?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:53 PM PDT

We were offered $47k with a $54k payback over 12 months. Keep in mind we have only been in business 2 years and our past few months have an average of about $45k/month.

It seems like we can't do much better, especially in today's financing market. Credibly tried to give us a 30% APR, which is absolutely ridiculous. Their reasoning was they no longer give loans to companies who haven't been in business less than 5 years. They really do care, don't they lol.

Help with hiring a foreign remote employee (or contractor?).

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:23 PM PDT

    Hey ya'll.

Im part of a service based business in California and we have 3 employees total. We're looking to bring in an administrative assistant along to help with our operations manager workload. We're very much considering hiring somebody from Latin American as it is more so in our budget. We've only ever employed and contracted US citizens and are very much unsure how to go about bringing in a foreign individual. There is a ton of scattered info online and it's very overwhelming; any help is appreciated.

    Thanks Devin

Did anyone get their EIDL increased? How long did it take?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:09 PM PDT

I got an email back in April inviting me to apply for an increase to my EIDL, since the rule changed from 6 months revenue to 24 months revenue. I replied to the email to apply, but they wrote back asking for my 2019 tax returns, which I didn't have done at the time. I finally got the 2019 return done (it was more complex than I expected) and submitted it to the SBA last week. I didn't get any reply at all, which is kind of a good sign in that they had previously replied to tell me they needed more, so maybe not replying means everything is okay.

Well, today I poked back into the portal and didn't notice a lot of changes, except that there was a new document for me to sign, the tax transcript request form. I signed that. Then I saw that there was an action button at the part of the screen where it said the loan amount, and that allowed me to change the loan amount to a much higher number. I dragged the slider to the maximum amount and clicked "submit" and it had a delay of a good while before going back to the screen, and then it showed something like "pending." I can't get back into the site at all now because it says it is down for maintenance or something.

Anyway, I am now months late to the party, and I'm wondering how this process went for others. How long did it take? Will I be able to get this approved without the IRS processing my return? The return has been submitted to the IRS but I've received no acknowledgment of it. Last I checked the IRS is years behind in processing late-filed returns; they still haven't acknowledged my 2017 return I filed last fall. Well, they sort of acknowledged it; they sent a letter asking me to call a number for identity verification, and I tried calling the number a number of times, but I gave up and just re-submitted the return on paper and I haven't heard anything since. So I'm pretty concerned that, if the SBA is depending on IRS records, I'll be SOL since god knows how long it will take the IRS to process my return into their system.

If you were able to get the EIDL increase approved, how long did it take? Was there any communication along the way, or just a black box? And if you applied and didn't get it, what happened instead?

Thanks for any info you can share with me on this.
