Am I getting ripped off on my salary (BDR/SDR)? Sales and Selling

Am I getting ripped off on my salary (BDR/SDR)? Sales and Selling

Am I getting ripped off on my salary (BDR/SDR)?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:47 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I'll make it straight to the point. I'm currently working in a US-Based SaaS Healthcare company (remote, small company less than ten employees). Half of my time is spent upselling inbound leads, and the other half is spent cold calling potential prospects (ultimate goal is to set appointments with the AE).

I've been with the company for about nine months now, had some previous experience in Sales but nothing SaaS, and am currently getting paid $31k base, with no commission.

Am I getting ripped off? I've seen many people on this sub scoff at a $50k OTE, while I'm over here making $31k regardless of how many appointments I set.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    r/sales user verification

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:11 AM PDT

I think this sub would benefit from some sort of user verification mechanism. Then people could be flaired with industry, role and years of experience.

There are lots of young reps coming in here for help, insight, etc. It would greatly enrich the experience (my opinion, of course) if there was a way to immediately see how credible the person you're speaking with is. I see lots of comments that leave me scratching my head, some outright bad advice at times, and the concern I have is that it could potentially do damage.

Not that a 25 year old BDR can't have good advice, but I'd certainly like to know if that's the experience level I'm getting my advice from. "Advice" threads could even limit top level comments to verified, flaired users.

How did you get the sales job you have now?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:40 AM PDT

Just wanted to see how some of you got the jobs you have now.

This can either be the sales job you first got or the current position you have. If you can specify what industry and position name that would be awesome! Looking forward to seeing your responses!!

Cold calling simply isn't working and I'm getting burned out

    Posted: 28 Sep 2021 04:15 PM PDT

You may be thinking "Here we go again. Another newbie who doesn't understand a thing about sales"

To that I'd say you're right. I'm 3 months into my BDR role in cybersecurity sales. I make phone calls day in and day out, I tweaked my script, I've left voicemails, and everything in between. I've stayed away from cliche wording and coming off salesy.

People simply don't like cold calls and each and everyday when I make 100+ calls to have one person pick up to tell me they aren't interested, it reinforces that opinion of mine.

No, I probably won't last long in this role. No, I probably am not giving myself enough time. No, I probably don't know what I'm talking about.

My VP of sales sit near my desk and gets a few cold calls a day where he rolls his eye and makes comments about not liking to receive them. Then turns around to tell us to make more dials to Directors, VP's, and C-Level ppl.

With so many spam calls and being berated by other sales calls throughout the day, I'm not surprised people no longer pick up the phone to unknown numbers.

Sorry this was more of a vent.

How much revenue should a sales person generate

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:42 AM PDT

Now I know there is no strict answer to this and there will be a huge amount of variables e.g. how long they've been at the org, do they have other responsibilities, are they a sales leader etc.

But my questions is in the title:

Is there a ballpark range on how much revenue a sales person should generate e.g. 2 x their salary per year, 5 x their salary per year?

Let's say for someone 6 months into the role or even 1 year into the role.

Anyone familiar with any general rules of thumb?

    Ps big up r/sales !

Need Advice: Unrealistic Quotas and How to Cope

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:21 AM PDT

    Hey all,

Like the title says I would like to get some input on how you deal with unrealistic expectations.

For context, I started a role as an SDR around 6 months ago. Our current quota is set at 20 demos a month. Since I have started, I have not seen a single person hit that number.

Our team consists 20+ SDR's. As for myself I am going to finish the quarter ranked 2nd for demos held.

The issue is that I'm not even at 50% of quota.

I'm having a hard time dealing with the fact that my production is so far below quota. It has been mentally draining for me, and makes me feel like a failure.

In comparison to my peers I am performing well, but when I joined I was told that 70% of reps were hitting and I'm not pleased with the income I am earning from this.

Has anyone else been in the same situation? It looks like in another 6 months, I'll be able to move to an AE position if I keep up my current performance.

However, our AE's are not close to hitting quota either. My main worry is that my performance will be respectable compared to my colleagues, but the income won't be what I'm looking for.

Any advice on whether I should stay on this path or look elsewhere would be appreciated. Prior to this I was in a closing role that was not SaaS. I'm unsure how realistic it would be to jump from an SDR role to an AE role in another SaaS market if I were to jump ship 6 months from now once I find out what our AE's are actually getting paid.

Any thoughts from others in a similar situation would be great.

I just blew a cognitive assessment out of the water and still didn’t get the SDR role.

Experienced rep, thinking of jump to SaaS. Can't start at the bottom. Possible? Likely?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:00 AM PDT

I'm mid-career, been successful in digital media sales for 10+yrs, at a good and world-recognized brand. Since I joined we've kind of lost our way in a flurry of acquisitions and half-baked product launches. I'm finding that we're unable to deliver stuff I sell, which we used to be able to deliver quite successfully. Don't like the outlook, so looking at options. Which sucks, b/c OTE where I am is around 300.

Had a convo with SalesForce because of a mutual friend, and that went pretty well. Hoping to hear more on that this week. Another convo with a really successful and trusted friend (sr partner level at a big-4 consultancy, millions/yr in comp, more importantly great visibility into industries and trends) has me thinking that Saas could be a good move and now could be a good time.

My question: can an established seller of complex campaigns that are NOT Saas make the jump to a similar level in Saas? I see all the grind you guys put in at the early levels with hundreds of dials a day and while I respect it, I've already lived it, and not looking to do it again. I can get conversations with the Saas companies I want to work with - looking to understand (a) if it happens that senior sellers can come over at comparable levels and (b) provided I am intelligent/a worker/a learner if that generally does okay or if you're screwed unless you came from the bottom.

Any suggestions on how to get more calls for our digital marketing company?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:28 AM PDT

My role as an sales manager is to message our prospects on LinkedIn and try to convert them into calls with our CEO - of course the ultimate goal being to close deals. We sell enhanced LinkedIn profiles for CEOs and their executive teams as well as thought leadership blogging and posts on their LinkedIn for tech CEOs. This past year has been really tough getting any calls. It seems like no one replies and if they do agree to a call, they don't answer my follow up messages. We really need more calls or I'm worried I'll lose my job.

Can anyone think of an effective message that can get people into a conversation? I've tried offering them free tips, or sending them statistics on the importance of social media, I offer them free resources such as workshops and helpful blogs. I also made a video of myself explaining the services we offer. Feel like I'm running out of ideas. I'd really appreciate any help or additional perspectives.

What companies offer dialing and database software affordable for early stage startups?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 10:47 AM PDT

Like what you'd have at a large company's sales force. But not ridiculously expensive. A thorough database of leads, and something that dials three at once.

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 01:54 AM PDT

Hi, i know that stealing clients in sales is common thing, but in the company i work it has come to extreme, sales director is stealing managers clients, has stolen 4 of mine and when i had conversation with him and owner, the owner just said deal wtih the situation among yourselfs. I could leave the job and tell them to fuck off, but i have a family to feed,.. shit.. and the most fucked up situation was when i had covid, sales director was reading my emails as i was sick at home and one of my leads replied that want to work with us, large orders. When i recovered the client was assigned to sales director. I did not mentioned it as he has released people from the job easaly. I really would apprieciate the advice... any advice.. sorry for my English, not the native tongue

Getting Into the World of Sales

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:15 AM PDT

Hey there! I have been working in customer service for almost 10 years now. I've been making shit pay and really want to start making a lot more money. I've determined the fastest way to do this is to get into sales. I have four years of college (no degree yet, long story…) and a wide range of customer service experience from health care offices, to running a yoga studio, to working at an art school. I am really good with people, and genuinely love talking and meeting new people. My coworkers have always commented on how good I am at connecting with people as well as handling really difficult situations with customers. I feel like my skills could easily translate to success in sales. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for a newbie in this field, esp with no degree. I am also leaning towards tech sales, bc, well, money. Thanks in advance 🐙

Stay as SDR at current company or make a leap to be an AE at another company?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:28 AM PDT

Got an offer to be an AE at a competitor. Their product is good but they lack a feature that differentiates their product that makes my current company's product a solid all in one solution. They also don't have a strong or solid marketing presence in the US while my current company has frequent webinars, pays for ads on LinkedIn/Google/Facebook, etc. OTE is 150-170k and base is ~12K higher than my current salary as an SDR.

Interviewed for an AE position at my current company and they think I have potential to be a great seller with some coaching/mentoring but want me to stay on as an SDR for another quarter before revisiting the conversation.

Was informed by leadership at my current company that the poaching company 1) has AEs who have no previous AE experience 2) is trying to make strides in a market where there are already established players and the likelihood of them succeeding is not great and 3) shut down the US function last yr bc of Covid, but one of the sellers there let me know the company's in a much better place due to hitting their growth goals and accelerating hiring.

Not sure where to go from here. On one hand, I have an offer to be an AE now and can roll the dice on whether or not I'll be successful in the role vs no solid guarantees that I WON'T indefinitely be stuck as an SDR at my current company if I stay. On the other hand, my current company has more popularity, established marketing presence, big name clients, etc.

    Any advice?

    Zoominfo VS Apollo IO

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 06:09 AM PDT

    Hey team,

I'm starting my own company soon and will be using either zoominfo or Apollo io for prospecting and getting phone numbers and emails.

I have experience with zoominfo and found their information to be extremely accurate and reliable. As you probably all know however it's quite expensive. They quoted me around $15,000 per year. On the other hand, I spoke with Apollo io and for some other their custom package with additional features quoted me around $10,000 per year.

Does anyone have experience with Apollo io and how reliable their information is within the database?

    Thanks for the insights!

Working Remote - Looking for experience from sales folks working remote right now!

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:36 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Been a bit since I last posted here - long story short, I had to finish up my military service and getting back into sales. I've been looking up a few places I could get back to, before I start my actual job hunt. But I had a few questions for the folks working sales jobs remotely right now with the current world situation.

I've been seeing on LinkedIn/Indeed that there are a lot of remote sales roles. It's definitely intrigued me because I would actually love to work from home, considering I worked a bit from my house pre-COVID. A few questions I'd love to ask you all are:

    1. How has your experience been? Do you feel motivated vs working in the office?
    2. Do you feel like you get less help from working in an office space?
    3. Any challenges? What are the benefits and the cons?
    4. Finally, non WFH related - I obviously took two years off for the military. Do you think it'd be beneficial to start from a BDR role and move back up? Or pick up where I left off as an AE?

Thank you all! Let me know if there is any feedback outside of the questions. Always appreciate you all and looking forward to cracking a beer with everyone soon after I get back to selling.

    Calendar Invite on Gmail

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 09:04 AM PDT

So I'm writing a cold email and I wanted to see if there is a way I can have a hyperlink that would allow the prospect to open their calendar.

Example: "Of course, being respectful to your calendar, wanted to see what your availability was like for..." (the word calendar would be hyperlinked)

    Any comments/thoughts are welcome! Thanks!

Looking for a CRM for an outbound sales team - please help!

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:27 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I am the co-founder of a fintech and we are starting up an outbound sales team. So far I have been doing this in my emails and linkedin but its very quickly becoming a mess. I looked at a ton of CRMs over the past week but haven't found anything I'd want to use, which CRMs do you actually LIKE using?

    My broad requirements:

    1. Clean, modern, easy to use UI
    2. Auto-population of prospect data from LI (if I enter someone's email, I don't want to also enter their Company, etc like Superhuman does)
    3. Some sort of sales funnel/process where I can classify leads at which stage they are at
    4. Reminders to re-contact people leads
    5. No code required
    6. Startup-friendly pricing (not in the $$$$ range)

I looked at the usual suspects but they already fail point (1) for the most part...

    What are your ideas?

    Thanks!!

    Lead Generation VS. Sales position

    Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:22 AM PDT

Hey so I am kind of in a rough spot trying to make a decision. So I am currently at a Pharma sales job which makes net revenue of 30 million a year. Currently factoring in all benefits I am making about 70K a year. Base is around 38K with the rest on commission and steady commission since I have the same customers.

Another job is offering me 60 to 70K base pay but it is not a full cycle sales job, there is a 20 percent extra annual bonus yearly and it's mainly lead generation with some meeting in between with customers. All remote. So being remote I cut my like 2 hour commute (1 hour there and back) and also the company has a stock, all the bells and whistles for benefits and makes about a billion a year also Pharma….

My issue here is that my current company which currently looks bad compared this new company is still a full sales cycle job and I have all my monthly clientele and I have hopes to reach 90 to 120K in a year or 2….

So having a huge guilt trip currently leaving all my clients for a stable not full cycle sales job although the pay and benefits currently surpass my career at this moment.

Last note to add here my manager is a d*** at my current job which also is an added annoyance

Any tips or suggestions help. I never done lead generation sales before

I'm a roofing and siding contractor. We're working a storm currently and I can't get any of my clients to call me back… more importantly all the doors have been knocked by other companies. It's frustrating, I see 5 different companies on the same street in a neighborhood. It psychs me out from going up to the doors. Can anyone provide any perspective, or any pitch advice?
