Adjustor claiming car is total loss (8k repair bill estimate) on a 45k vehicle

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:07 PM PDT

Bit of context, I'm located in NY and we were hit with a flood. I drove through around 4 inches of rain when my car stalled. I was given a 8k repair bill by a certified BMW technician and my insurance (geico) adjustor just gave me a call and told me they are going to consider the car a total loss. How is this possible? The adjustor claimed there was water in the carpet and the internal electronics were damaged which is impossible (For reference the water levels were up to the middle of the wheels) Should I be fighting against the total loss? I truly do not want to be in the market looking for a car especially after looking at how inflated car prices are currently due to supply chain issues.

How is it legal for premiums to increase after a claim?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:44 AM PDT

    TL/DR - see u/ahoooooooo comment.

Specifically not at fault claims. Have a friend who was recently T-boned (car totaled). The other driver was at fault but now my friend's rates have increased because filing a claim indicates to insurance companies that he is more likely to file a claim in the future. How is this legal? Should it be?

Same for renters insurance. I recently contemplated filing a claim for water damage but backed off because of the deductible and the fact that my rates are likely to increase for the same reasons as above.

I want to work as an underwriter but I don’t know where to start.

    Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:36 AM PDT

I have some experience in insurance sales with Gainsco quoting car insurance and I have both my P&C license and my life and health license. If it were possible I would get my license to underwrite but I understand that's something like a 2 year process in an institution of sorts. I am seeking employment in Texas, USA.

Do companies pay current employees to go through the underwriting school? What's the fastest and easiest route to get into underwriting from where im at?

In CA, if I choose MedPay, is UMBI still necessary?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 05:22 PM PDT

Hi, I'm in California and shopping for insurance for my new car.

MedPay is only $4.31/month to cover $50k per person. It's $7.82/month to get UMBI covers $50k per person, $100k per accident. (I can still get Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage without UMBI)

I also have Kaiser HMO from my employer (low copay). Since I will finance my car, I will be required to have Collision and Comprehensive coverage as well.

If I get $50k MedPay (do I need this even?), is UMBI still offer anything to me?

My understanding is that the only thing I'd missed from UMBI is if I'd be out of work due to injury (?)

    Thank you.

Should I add ‘med payment coverage’ to my car insurance?

I live in Missouri. I do not have health insurance. So should I add 'Med payment coverage' to my car insurance? What is a good amount to get from $1,000-$10,000?

Geico. My mom is not on my car loan, can she still be the primary policy holder if I am the primary driver? I won’t tell Geico this obviously. I am trying to save money.

Geico. If my mom is the primary policy holder on my car, and I’m the secondary. Will lenders take the full coverage if her name is not on the title and registration. She is not on the car loan.

Unknown person slammed door into the side of my car, should I go through my insurance?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:22 PM PDT

I just got a brand new car. I went out to my car the other day and noticed a big dent on the side of my door and scratched paint. It definitely looks like someone was parked next to me and rammed their door into my car and drove off without leaving any contact info or anything.

My deductible is $500 and I feel like there's a chance it will cost more than that to fix the damage, especially if the whole door needs to be painted or something. I have comprehensive coverage, not sure if that matters.

Anyways, I'm wondering if there are any negative consequences of going through my insurance to pay for this, if that is even possible? Will my premium go up? I've never had any accidents and so I don't know how this works. Thanks!

How long after a car accident you can file a claim with the other party insurance company?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:58 PM PDT

I was involved in hit and run, I made a police report but the issue is my car went into service the next day and the dealership is backed up and won't be getting my car back for 2-3 weeks. I want to know how long do I have to file a claim with the other party insurance company since I don't have the car with me at the moment.

    friends dilemma

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:16 PM PDT

My friend rear-ended this girl's car. So he was driving and he looked to his left for half a second and then she apparently stopped at an unmarked crosswalk at the end of a block, he rear-ended her, and then they exchanged information. he does not have insurance on the car, there is insurance on the car but it's his parents and his name is not under it, she potentially does not have her license I will update this thread when I know for sure if she has her license. This girl went to our high school and the car she was driving was her brother's car. my friend asked to handle this matter out of pocket rather than making his dad's insurance premiums rise for something that was his fault. he is trying to milk my friend for a thousand dollars off the most minuscule amount of damage, we're talking about a scratch that isn't bigger than half of your pinky not wider than a couple of inches very faded blends in with the color of the car that got love tapped. is there anything my friend can do to not lose a thousand dollars? his sister (the driver of the car that got bumped into) literally admitted that her brother is being an asshole and without a doubt using this opportunity for a free 1000 dollars. Mind you my friend just quit his job and started university so this money doesn't come by easy. There has to be more to this than just the morality of the guy who owns the car. What are some options that my friend can take and the legalities of the car owner's method of resolution? any feedback is appreciated, ask any questions for clarification i will be periodically checking and updating this thread with new information

Switched insurance before taking care of hit and run damage. Are we out of luck?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 02:24 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

My wife has a nice dent in the side of her car that happened earlier this year. We procrastinated on fixing it or even getting an estimate. We kind of thought that it would be cheap enough we would just pay the repair costs. Turns out it's about 3.5k since they have to replace a entire side panel. Anyways, she has joined my insurance since that incident happened. We understand that this would be considered pre existing damage with our current insurance and I'm guessing we can't file with insurance that she no longer has. Did w screw ourselves with our procrastination and just need to pony up the cost out of pocket?

High risk driver on a company auto insurance?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:06 AM PDT

    Greetings.

I am a high risk driver due to a cancellation for non payment in the last 3 years. I have no accidents and no speeding tickets and and consider myself a good driver. I've got insurance again with higher premiums certainly. I've now got my full license and looking into driving jobs.

My question, if I get listed under a companys auto insurance policy, will they be notified I am classified as a 'high risk driver'? I don't want to be turned down because i will be more pricey to insure on their policy then the next guy. As I said, Ive had no accidents or speeding tickets, and i really hate the label of 'high risk driver' as it sounds like I do 100mph through school zones.

    Insurance for vacant lot

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:42 AM PDT

I'm in the process of purchasing an undeveloped, vacant lot. It's about 6 acres in the woods with a marsh at the back in the property. I plan to build a house there in a few years, until then it will remain vacant and undeveloped. In the mean time, what kind of insurance will I need? I want some kind of liability coverage in case someone gets hurt. No one has permission to use the land but there are hiking trails near by and I would expect people may cross through.

    Edit: Maine

Short Term and Long Term Disability Insurance and its affect on Medical Insurance

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 03:36 PM PDT

I'm hoping someone can tell me how to navigate this insurance maze, or at least tell my friend what to expect. I'm hoping someone out there has lived through a similar situation and can help. I'm trying to help out a coworker.

I work with a guy who was diagnosed with a very bad type of cancer. He will need Chemo and Radiation ASAP. Statistically, he might not have much time left, but there is no way to know that for sure.

He has very good medical insurance with 100% coverage after a low deductible is met. He also has short-term and long-term disability, critical care insurance, and life insurance through the company. You would think he is in a good position in regards to insurance, but I'm not so sure.

My understanding is that in order to apply for the short and long-term disability he needs to be put on a long-term medical absence. This will cause the Professional Employment Organization that the company is a part of to cancel coverage and make him pay for it with COBRA. The company might help out with the cobra payments, but still, they only last 18 months. Also, I am thinking he would lose his hospitalization and supplemental life insurance as well, as those other benefits often are lost.

Is this really what happens in the United States? You get cancer, and if you go on disability for chemo or from the disease then you better die or get better in 18 months or you lose your house? If you get sick do you lose your life insurance if you get it through your company?

American National Won’t Issue Policy on Tesla Before Delivery

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 11:31 AM PDT

I'm picking up a Tesla in a week and a half and need to provide proof of insurance before taking delivery.

I got a quote from American National, which was recommended to me by colleagues who are business analysts for personal and commercial auto insurance products (I'm a developer). They gave me a fantastic rate compared to what my current carrier Geico gave me.

I asked the agent on the phone (policy can't be issued online) to set the policy effective date for the 25th since that's when I'll be picking it up. He said they can't set future effective dates. Okay fine, thought I'll just call back in a few days and issue it and pay for a few days of coverage I'm not really "using".

He said they can't issue policies for vehicles that aren't in my possession yet, and told me to call to issue the quote when "I'm at the dealership or have the dealership call them and they'll issue it."

That's not how this works. I'm supposed to upload the proof of insurance to the website prior to picking up the vehicle. Setting a future effective date shouldn't be a problem, and I run test scenarios on personal auto products I've developed where we can set a future effective date for a policy during issuance. Issue Date and Effective date are two different things, or so I thought. I have a feeling the agent on the phone has no idea what he's talking about.

Should I just call back in a few days and ask them to bind/issue the quote as if I have the vehicle already? I'm thinking I confused the agent telling him I wanted to set the effective date for a future date.

Homeowners insurance and personal property claims - does insurance keep the damaged items?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 02:44 PM PDT

I had a water loss recently and am in the middle of repairs, etc. Insurance already gave me some money (cost less depreciation) for personal property that was damaged (furniture, misc items). All of the stuff has been stored in our garage while repairs are being made. I also know my insurance company will pay me the depreciation part once I replace those items.

Today, our adjuster told us that those damaged items should have been taken away by insurance as it's technically theirs now as they paid us for it. I've never had a loss like this before so this whole process is all new, but is this typically how it works where once insurance pays me for the damage, they take away the personal property items?

Thanks for any insight! Just want to make sure I'm not making any avoidable mistakes.

    Edit: I'm in Texas.

    Dental insurance?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 02:24 PM PDT

I'm in California and I'm looking into getting dental insurance for the first time, and don't know where to start. I have health insurance through my employer, but no dental insurance. My main reason for wanting dental insurance is because I still have my wisdom teeth, and I want insurance in place in case they ever have to come out. I was advised to have an oral surgeon do the surgery if that day comes, since their placement makes the surgery riskier. What is the waiting period before dental insurance would cover a surgery like that? And which insurance company won't cheap out on me if I need it? Is there any possibility my medical insurance would cover it?

Otherwise, I just get cleanings one or twice a year (usually twice), and haven't had any issues with my teeth fortunately.

    Thanks!

    Is this Settlement offer fair?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 07:50 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I was rear ended by a drunk driver a little over a year ago. The accident resulted in me needing physical therapy for about 1 year, and getting Arthroscopic surgery on my shoulder due to tears from the accident. I now have limited reach from this arm. But anyway, I was made an offer by their insurance company for 80K. I was not sure if this seemed fair. To me it seems on the low side due to the time I had to spend in PT and the surgery involved. But of course I am biased since it happened to me. I would appreciate input from anyone with experience. Thanks!

I got my license before insurance and it almost doubled my quoted rate?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2021 12:54 PM PDT

I live in Alberta Canada if it matters.

I wanted to switch to balairdirect from my current insurance provider. Belair quoted me $58.79 a month. Then when she looked up my driving history she noticed I got my license in 2013 and got insurance in 2015. After she noticed that she said my insurance would be $94.58. Is this normal? I was still in school when I got my license, and I very rarely drove. The few times I did drive I borrowed my parents car. I feel like most people don't have insurance the second they get their license.
